The Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Mr. Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, has appealed to journalists and media practitioners to make formal complaints about attacks on them and be ready to testify to seek redress. He said the NMC was a legitimate body to handle issues of attacks on journalists and appealed to them to cooperate to protect themselves. Mr. Boadu-Ayeboafoh was speaking at a consultative meeting with journalists in Tamale on the Coordinated Mechanism on the Safety of journalists. Three persons in Akatsi in the Volta Region have been arrested by the police for duping people who hoped to be recruited into the Ghana Police Service. The three, Bernard Amenyah, 18; Godsway Adzikah, 23, and Godson Wemegah, 21, are currently in the custody of the Volta Regional Police Command where investigations are ongoing. Scam victims Many people who fell victim to the scam, according to preliminary investigations, paid various amounts to the three suspects with the hope of being considered in the ongoing process. The Bono East Regional Anti-Robbery Taskforce is the toast of the Police Administration following its work in fighting all forms of robberies in the region. Islamic funeral rights for Hajia Mariama Bawumia, mother of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, continued in Walewale on Thursday, with the third-day adu'a (funeral prayers). Hajia Mariama Bawumia passed away in Accra on Monday, and she was laid to rest in Walewale on Tuesday, with a host of dignitaries in attendance. The Branch Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Awutu Nyarkokwaa in the Awutu Senya West Constituency, Emmanuel Kwame Lartey has butchered the party’s Youth Organiser Ebenezer Akrade over arguments on GHc600. According to information gathered, the two were engaged in argument over GHS600 dashed to them by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Gizella Tetteh Agbotui. Apparently, the money was given to them to be shared amongst the party executives in the Constituency. Shockingly, the branch secretary, Emmanuel Kwame Lartey spent the money alone without the consent of the other party executives. Unhappy about the situation, the youth organiser Ebenezer Akrade confronted the secretary to demand his share of the GHS600. That was when Emmanuel Kwame Lartey butchered him to his near death. “..during the 2020 elections, the then NDC Parliamentary Candidate visited the communities in Nyarkokwaa electoral area where she gave the branch executives GHS 600 to share. The money was handed over to the Secretary, Emmanuel Kwame Lartey. “It was later found out that the Secretary spent the money without their knowledge. So on several occasions, the youth organiser for the party, Ebenezer Akrade, asked for his share of the money whenever they met. “So around 1:17 pm today, the organiser met the Secretary who was on his way to the farm. The Secretary was with a cutlass. The youth organiser then confronted him and demanded his share. Before we realised, the secretary pushed the youth organiser who fell on his back, and butchered him,” an eyewitness to the incident, Richard Nimo has revealed to Citi News. Currently, the butchered Youth Organiser has been admitted at the Agona Dunkwa Salvation Army hospital where he is battling for his life. Ghana's Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery has revealed that the Akufo-Addo administration will fully open its borders once the 20 million covid-19 vaccination target is met. According to him, the move forms part of measures of ensuring that majority if the citizenry are vaccinated. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of 13 new members to serve on the Ghana Immigration Service Council, he said "People who speak bad about the decision to close Ghana’s borders should know that government didn’t do it unilaterally. Our neighbouring countries took similar decisions as part of efforts to curb the spread of the disease,” The Interior Minister added that the Akufo-Addo administration is bent on seeing the Ghana Immigration Service be transformed into one of the world's top notch security service which provides more than enough security for the nation and its people. "The erstwhile Council helped to chalk a number of successes including addressing welfare challenges. In all, more than 3,000 officers, who had been due for promotion for years, were promoted to various ranks within the past three years. To build a world class security agency, more personnel were recruited to augment the current staff and further expanded the GIS’ training facilities at Assin Fosu in the Central Region" he told the gathering. The Minister hinted that he is confident the GIS with its sister security agency, the Ghana Police Service will together deal with counter terrorism. "I am calling on the public to cooperate with the immigration personnel to help deal with the presence of extremist activities which may be imported into the country" On his part, Chairman for the council, Dr. Prempeh thanked government for the opportunity to serve as Chairmanof the Council. He assured the Minister that the new Council will come up a plan which will help GIS to deal with terrorist threats. "I am calling for an increase in the Service’s internally generated funds retention from 15 per cent to 30 to enable GIA undertake programmes and projects aimed at ensuring effectiveness" he appealed. Tyrone Iras Marghuy, one of the rasta students whose admission is being contested by Achimota School and the Attorney General’s Office, has been named as part of the school’s squad to compete in the National Science and Maths quiz. This has been disclosed by a human rights activist and senior law lecturer, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, who wrote in a Facebook post “Achimota has named Tyrone Iras Marhguy in its squad for the National Maths and Science Quiz for the next two years and it is in court, with the assistance of the State, seeking to kick him out of the school. Look, our problems are simple. It is our solutions that complicate them. Congrats, Tyrone, ignore the noise!” This new revelation comes at the back of recent developments in the case of two rasta students whose admission into Achimota school was upheld by a High Court after the school had initially decided against their admission. Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea and Tyrone Iras Murghuy were asked to either do away with their dreadlocks or forfeit their admission into Achimota School. The students and their parents sued Achimota School, The Attorney General’s Office, the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education for what they said was a violation of their fundamental human rights, and their right to religious practice. The school and other defendants argued in court that the dreadlocks of the two rasta students was in variance with its rules and regulations. However, a Human Rights Court of the Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Gifty Agyei Addo, on May 13, ruled that the fundamental human rights of the two students cannot be limited by the rules of the school. The court held that Achimota School and other respondents in the case failed to justify the position of the school in denying the students admission. The respondents have, however, gone back to court and are arguing that the High Court erred when it held that the rules and regulations of the school with regard to ensuring uniformity in appearance are unlawful, and interferes with one’s religious rights. The school is thus urging the Appeals Court to set aside the judgement of the High Court and order the plaintiffs to comply with the school’s regulations if they choose to be students of the school. The Attorney General in support of the school’s appeal is arguing that the decision by Achimota School does not interfere with the right to the education of the boys. “The learned Judge erred when she held that the regulation of the 1st Respondent requiring that students keep their hair low amounted to an illegal and unconstitutional attempt to suspend the manifestation of the Applicant’s guaranteed freedom to practice and manifest his religion…. “The learned Judge erred when she held that Respondent’s actions of asking the Applicant to step aside during the registration process are a violation of his right to dignity especially when the 2nd Respondent had disputed the veracity of that fact,” parts of the appeal by the AG’s office stated. It has, however, come to light that Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea has transferred from Achimota School to Ghana International School where he has been offered full scholarship worth $160,000. The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the general public that there will be a temporary closure of certain roads in Accra ahead of the Extraordinary Summit of ECOWAS ahead of State from Wednesday 15th to Thursday 16th September, 2021. According to the Police, some roads will be intermittently closed to traffic and opened immediately after the summit. In a statement by the Deputy Suprintendent of Police, Julian Obeng, it said "The affected roads are Jubilee Lounge to Liberation Road at Opeibea, Liberation Road from Opeibea traffic light through the Independence Avenue at National Theatre traffic light, Kempinski Hotel to National Theatre on the Independence Avenue through Ako Adjei" The statement reminded motorists to take note of these traffic arrangements and comply accordingly. She, however, noted that the command has made adequate provision for Motor Traffic Police Officers to be detailed at vantage points to offer the needed assistance to motorists. The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey says Ghana will be hosting an ECOWAS Extraordinary Session tomorrow to deliberate issues of Coup D'etat in the Guinea among others. According to her, the summit seeks to discuss the military taking over power in Guinea which all the various ECOWAS heads of states have condemned act. The Minister was speaking at the Information Ministry's Meet the Press series to brief the nation on progress of work done on the Guinea Coup D'etat and the ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit. Madam Ayorkor Botchwey added that, the summit which will be hosting about 13 different heads of states and chaired by President Akufo-Addo to help find solution to the Guinea Coup D'etat and road map for the successful handing over of power to democratic rule. She added that, the delegation she led to the Guinea to meet with the Coup leaders and the captured former president of Guinea will present their report to the ECOWAS heads of states and what were discussed during the said meeting. The Minister told Journalists that although the Former President of Guinea is still dealing with emotional trauma, he is physically fit. She added that aside the bank accounts and passports of the various Ministers being seized, none of them has been either arrested or tortured. The Minister also mentioned that despite the coup attack on government, the citizenry are plying their day to day trade peacefully in the country. The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has admitted that, some heads of states under ECOWAS have veered off in following due democracy despite the fact that they have signed the peace charter. According to her, some of these heads fail to follow the due processes of democracy as prescribed by the ECOWAS head which they signed in the Peace Pact which she says usually results in the such Coup D'etat. The Minister speaking at the Information Ministry's Meet the Press series to brief the nation on progress of work done on the Guinea Coup D'etat and the ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit. The Summit will be held in Accra tomorrow which will be hosting about 13 different heads of states and chaired by President Akufo-Addo to help find solution to the Guinea Coup D'etat and road map for the successful heading over of power to democratic rule. Madam Ayorkor Botchwey stressed that, despite the fact that, some of these head veer, the various heads of states behind the scenes are working tirelessly to bring such heads to order but says it is not always let out to the public domain.
