EcoZoil, a subsidiary of Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), has decried the lack of regular cleanups of the country’s beaches over the past years. Speaking to the media, the General Manager of EcoZoil, Mrs. Abitha Odame-Nyanteh, said the development has contributed to loads of filth at the country’s beaches, particularly the public beaches. She said this was not the case during the period when EcoZoil (formerly Zoil) used to clean the country’s beaches regularly. “EcoZoil, formerly Zoil, used to clean the beaches and everyone could attest that you could see Zoil workers on the beaches in our yellow uniforms. But for a while the project was put on hold because the government wanted to do a reassessment. But we have realised over the past years that because the work has been held on the filth that is being generated at the beaches has increased massively which is not the best,” she said. Mrs Odame-Nyanteh made the observation when her company took its nationwide beach cleanup exercise to the Western Region. The exercise forms part of EcoZoil’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) in helping to keep beaches in the country clean. The Western Region exercise kicked off at the Apo beach in the Shama District on Thursday, March 31, 2022. According to the MD of EcoZoil, Ghana was blessed with a long coastline stretch which, if effectively harnessed, can benefit the country enormously. “But you realise that this potential is not being harnessed, and it is so because of how dirty our beaches have become. Throughout our journey, it can be seen that it is mostly the private beaches that are clean,” she noted. She attributed the cleanliness of the private beaches to effective and efficient management by the private owners. However, she lamented that the sight of the country’s open/public beaches was nothing to write home about. “…and people have turned the beaches into dumpsites, refuse dumps and places of defecation which is not the best,” she advised. Again, the EcoZoil General Manager said beaches contribute to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Ghana’s economy. “Aside from the fact that you can get fish from the sea, tourism is one aspect that must also be looked at,” she stressed. Mrs. Odame-Nyanteh, therefore, made a passionate appeal to every Ghanaian to join them to make, especially the public beaches clean and healthy. She commended the chief fisherman and residents along the Apo beach for their high patronage. “It is clear that we have a situation at our beaches so need everyone on board, the community, the assembly, the chief fisherman and the government to help maintain our beaches clean,” she urged. Further, she stressed that when the beaches are clean, it will inure to the benefit Ghanaians. “Our quality of life is improved and even when we get involved it will be a source of employment generation for people along the communities, and in the long run, Ghana will stand to benefit,” the EcoZoil General Manager said. On the issue of open defecation at public beaches, Mrs. Odame-Nyanteh explained that it had more to do with culture rather than the lack of toilet facilities. “This is because there are communities with built public toilet facilities, but residents still prefer to come to the beach to ease themselves,” she explained. And though she agreed for more public toilet facilities to be built in the communities, she also called for public education and the enforcement of the sanitation bye-laws. She disclosed that plans were afoot by her company to build a mini recycling plant at some selected beaches and communities to help in waste segregation. A fisherman who is resident in Shama, Mr. Kwaku Nelson Odoom, stated that “the only way we can maintain a clean beach is that we have to sensitise and engage the communities.” He indicated that the community members need to be sensitised on the health risks of the practice of open defecation. "This has been a tradition: they prefer easing themselves at the beaches instead of going to public toilets," he said. The Chiefs, Elders and Residents of Ntoroboso in the Atwima Mponua Constituency in the Ashanti Region have commended government for the swift and expeditious response to some mining-related issues in the areas. The residents say the government’s decision to find compensation for the victims of the incidents is the ideal move they expected. The residents shared their joy when the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Hon. George Mireku Duker paid a working visit to the community on Thursday, March 31 2022 to assure them of government’s support. Hon Mireku Duker relayed the message of comfort and empathy from the Sector Minister, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor to the victims and promised them of compensation. He appealed to them to view the incident as purely accidental and not a deliberate attempt by the government to destroy their properties. Hon. George Mireku Duker promised a full-scale investigations into the incident after which support will be provided to the victim with other issues addressed. He affirmed belief in the work by the anti-galamsey taskforce and counselled the community members to view it as a mere slip. “Government is ready to support the man who lost properties in the incident,” Hon Duker said. Hon Mireku Duker however lamented illegal mining activities in the area which he says has destroyed River Offin. According to Hon, Duker, illegal mining threatens the survival of the people in the area and made a passionate appeal to the chiefs and elders to rise up against the menace. Describing the galamsey operations as ‘regrettable and despicable’, he charged the community to guard against the operations. He disclosed that government will scale up its anti-galamsey operations in the area and rid the River Offin of all mining equipment. The Deputy Minister motioned an alternative and a more sustainable and responsible mining method as replacement for the destructive galamsey. He announced that the MP for the area, Hon. Isaac Asiamah has secured a Community Concession for the area and that by the end of April, it will be operationalized. He reminded the community and Ghanaians not to view the onslaught on illegal-small scale mining as an attack on their livelihoods but rather a measure to protect the country’s resources and grow the industry. Hon. Duker, in a related development inaugurated the Atwima Mponua District Mining Committee with a call on them to stamp out illegal mining in the area. He told the members of the community to be vigilant and firm in dealing with mining issues in the district and deal decisively with any person or institution who flouts the rules that govern mining in the country. The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Hon. Isaac Asiamah commended the Sector Minister and the Ministry for taking steps to deal with issue. At a ceremony to witness the delivery of medical commodities via the Zipline medical drone system, the General Manager of Zipline, Naa Adorkor Yawson, disclosed that the company has so far operationalized six distribution caters country-wide and serving over two-thousand health facilities. Mrs. Yawson said, the plan of Zipline, with the operationalization of their newest centers in Anum and Kete Krachi, is to fast track the dispensing of health care by providing prompt responses in the form of medicine delivery in emergency and non-emergency situations with the aim of supporting the efforts of government in creating access to basic health needs. “We are delivering live saving interventions in the form of medications and medical supplies to areas that have since time immemorial reported challenges of shortage of medications and lack of requisite medical supplies. The UK- Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC), on Wednesday 23rd March 2022, hosted a webinar on “Current Import Tax Tariff and Port-Handling Charges in Ghana”. The webinar, the 4th in the Chamber’s Quarterly Tax Dialogue Series, was moderated by PwC Ghana’s Abeku Gyan-Quansah and featured a distinguished panel comprising Ena Kwaku Blege, Head of Classification, Ghana Customs Technical Services Bureau, Esther Gyebi Donkor, General Manager of Marketing and Corporate Affairs of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), and Samuel Ntow-Kummi, General Manager of Corporate Planning, also of GPHA. During the webinar, which tackled the issue of perceived high import tariffs and port handling charges, Mr. Blege intimated that his outfit is not responsible for import duty rates in Ghana, neither has the government independently controlled the creation of import duties since 2015. The rates, according to him, have been set by ECOWAS since 2012. "The Heads of States within the sub-region came together and signed a protocol for the creation of a customs union that would have the mandate of administering a common import duty regime, to be otherwise know as the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET)". The CET was to serve as the principal instrument for harmonising ECOWAS member states and strengthening their common markets. “The same import duties, quotas and preferences are applicable to all goods entering the West Africa region…all import duty rates are subsequently imposed from Abuja, the seat of the ECOWAS Commission”. The Ghana government implemented the CET in 2015, and has been able to create, amend and adjust tariff rates by up to 3% as and when it deems it necessary, due to a special dispensation known as the Import Adjustment Tax (IAT). Through the IAT (which is still in force even thought it was scheduled to end in 2017), government has been able to review downwards, about 130 tariff rates. While other rates have been reviewed upwards, Mr. Blege maintained that “the review as implemented by government under the IAT has mostly been on the lower side”. GPHA & Port Efficiency/Charges Mrs. Esther Gyebi- Donkor shared that the GPHA has, over the years, “done a lot to improve clearance processes, in a bid to make the ports more efficient as well as reduce cost of doing business at the ports.” Their efforts include the introduction of terminal operating systems, vehicle appointment systems, E-gate systems, E-payment systems, mobile apps to facilitate payment for traders, and a TV programme, “The Eye on Ports”, to sensitise and educate the public on port activities and policies. Regarding port-handling fees, Mrs. Gyebi-Donkor indicated that the fees charged consist of shipping line, terminal operator, freight forwarding, Ghana Shippers Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, and Food and Drugs Authority charges, among a number of others. These, altogether, contribute to the perceived high charges. “These other charges are not directly controlled by the GPHA”. The GPHA controls only the port tariff, as mandated by GPHA Law 1986 (PNDC Law 160), and is set in consultation with key stakeholders. Mrs. Gyebi-Donkor admitted that there is some congestion at the ports, which lead to delays. However, the congestion is caused by shippers/importers who struggle with permits/exemptions and financial challenges. The prolonged delays further result in the accrual of additional charges that are avoidable. Mr. Ntow-Kummi concurred with Mrs. Gyebi-Donkor and added that “port costs affect a country’s competitiveness for trade and even in attracting foreign direct investment.” To control port costs, he urged importers to ensure they clear their cargo within the 7-day rent-free window so as to avoid paying additional charges. The panel discussed a number of related issues, such as the payment of import duties on goods emerging from free zone enclaves in the country, determination of tax tariffs, customs penalties, and goods classification. Mr. Blege also urged traders to comply with the required documentation/honest description of goods to ease challenges associated with import duties. The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GHiE) led by the President, Ing. Rev. Prof. Charles Anum Adams has donated GH¢50,000 to the Appiatse Support Fund to help with the reconstruction of the community and the restoration of livelihoods. Presenting the cheque to the Committee at a brief meeting during their Engineering Week Celebration, on Thursday, 31st March 2022, Ing. Rev. Prof. Charles Anum Adams expressed his gratitude to the fund for honoring their invitation, adding that their donation came at the behest of the Chairman Rev. Dr Joyce Aryee's request through a letter, for their support. He remarked that the unfortunate incident at Appiatse came to the attention of GHiE, and the proactiveness of the leadership of his institution led to the mobilization of funds to help in the restoration of livelihoods. The President of the association also hinted that his outfit was ready to assist beyond the monetary contribution they have made. “If there are students who want to learn STEM or robotics, we are ready to assist with that to help them learn and become engineers. Nigerians have made a record as the only country to host a FIFA World Cup match where an official died with property of FIFA stolen to boot. FIFA and CAF are set to announce a series of sanctions on the Nigeria FA after a series of development following their loss to Ghana in the crucial encounter. The VAR machine that had severed Ghana and Nigeria in both legs was stolen in Abuja after the match on Tuesday March 29th, 2022. Citi TV Journalist Fentuo Tahiru in an interview with Citi TV back in Accra after his Abuja experience said the VAR Machine deployed in the match was stolen while Ghanaians had to change their Ghanaian jerseys and paraphernalia to avoid being attacked. There was a stampede and rioting after Ghana qualified ahead of Nigeria in the second leg match held at Abuja in Nigeria. Most of the vociferous crowd in Abuja had expected Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup after the first leg of their playoff ended 0-0 in Ghana on Friday. But Ghana pipped Nigeria with a low shot from Arsenal gaffer Thomas Partey to give the Black Stars a sweet lead that was soon canceled out after Ademola Lookman was fouled in the box by Denis Odoi. The government is working assiduously to introduce the first ever battery powered electric buses as well as gas-powered buses for public transport, the Deputy Minister of Transport Hon. Frederick Obeng Adom has announced. According to him, this formed part of a number of interventions that would serve as an important leverage that would set the tone for the gradual decarbonisation of the road transport sector. "We are also working assiduously to introduce the first- ever battery powered electric buses as well as gas-powered buses for public transportation. These interventions would serve as an important leverage that would set the tone for the gradual decarbonisation of the road transport industry," the Minister said. Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Transport, Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah at a regional stakeholders meeting on the national energy transition plan at Techiman in the Bono East, Hon. Adom said government was in the process of developing an E-Mobility Policy to guide the deployment and scaling-up of electric vehicles in the country, stressing that "In respect of the Road Transport Services, our focus is mainly on technological shift away from petrol and diesel fuels to a more benign alternatives." Hon. Adom said the transport sector was vital to the functioning of the economy and key to ensuring social cohesion, however, depending on what technology was being adopted, there could be direct and indirect impact on the natural environment. He noted that at the moment, ghana's development was underpinned largely by the use of fossil fuels from power generation to everyday commute. "Majority of Ghanaians depend on the use of small to medium sized vehicles powered by either petrol or diesel engines. Data available at the DVLA shows that out of the 2.8million registered vehicles as at 2021, 72 percent are powered by petrol engines, 27 percent by diesel engines and less than 1% by LPG and other energy sources. The result of this high dependency on fossil fuels coupled with a number of factors including traffic congestion has made the transport sector, a net emitter of Greenhouse Gases (GHG)," he emphasised. According to the Deputy Minister, reducing carbon emissions alone was not sufficient in the attainment of the United Nations' 1.5 temperature, adding that "We need to go one step further in order to halt the climate emergency. Achieving a Net Zero Future requires coordinated approach touching on many aspects of our national economy." He noted that globally, countries were responding to the call for a Net-Zero Emission Future. "The United Kingdom for example has set target aiming to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Europe is also working towards stopping the production of diesel cars by 2030. Likewise, Norway which relies heavily on oil and gas revenues, has also set a target to stop the sale of fossil fuel-powered cars by 2025," he added. He said these developing trends had implications on the domestic markets as a result there was the need to realign the country's focus to guarantee transparent, efficient and sustainable developments. "As a Ministry in charge of transportation, we remain resolute and committed to the promotion of a sustainable and environmentally responsive transport system. The President of Hungary, H.E. János Áder, has decorated the Founder and Leader of World Miracle Outreach, Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, an International Evangelist, with the highest national award of his country—the Knight of Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary. The conferment was done on behalf of President Áder by the Hungarian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tamás Fehér, at a brief and colourful ceremony on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at the Hungary Embassy in Accra. Dr. Tetteh was honoured by the Hungarian government for his outstanding performance and instrumentality in building the bilateral and business relationship between Ghana and Hungary. Conferring the Honour on Dr Tetteh, the Hungarian Ambassador mentioned that this was the second time a Ghanaian is receiving this award in the history of Hungary. Addressing the gathering, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, H.E. Claudia Turbay Quintero, the award was in recognition of Dr. Tetteh’s uniqueness in every sphere of life. She added that Dr. Tetteh's leadership was exemplary and worthy of emulation. Former President of Ghana, H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor, who graced the occasion, underscored that Dr. Tetteh was deserving of the award. The Chief Corporate Communication Officer of Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Ms. Sophia Kudjordji, has been honoured with a Global Women Achievers Award 2022 in the field of communication. The 2022 Global Women Achievers Awards (TGWAA) which was organised by CMO Global and World Women Leadership and Congress & Awards--all in India, recognises sterling contributions and accomplishments of women across the world. It also celebrates and honours women who have excelled in various spheres of life. The TGWAA was presented to Ms. Kudjordji via zoom together with 85 women from 37 countries who were also acknowledged. A citation accompanying the award praised Ms. Kudjordji for her strong track record of building the function and teams of some of Ghana’s leading organisations. The citation particularly mentioned the 25 years’ experience of Ms. Kudjordji in the media and communication space which has been brought to bear on the JGC. “Under Ms. Kudjordji’s watch at Jospong Group of Companies, one of the subsidiaries focused on waste management is now established as a thought leader in environmental sanitation,” the citation states. The citation also recognised Ms. Kudjordji’s instrumental role in helping subsidiaries of JGC to win awards both within and outside Ghana, adding that across her career, the chief corporate communication officer of JGC has initiated several impactful communication projects. Speaking to the media, she thanked the organisers for the honour done her, and also thanked JGC for the support given to her right from the day she joined the group. Meanwhile Ms Kudjordji over the weekend received the “Outstanding Corporate Communication Personality Award at the 12th Ghana Entrepreneurs and Corporate Executive Awards, and for three years running was named one of Ghana’s Top 10 Women in PR in Ghana. Other awards in her stable include Corporate Communications Professional of the Year 2020, Corporate Communications Personality of the Year 2020. Also, the Chief Operating Officer (COO)-Environmental and Sanitation Cluster, JGC, Mrs. Florence Larbi, was also honoured. The Chief Operating Officer (COO)-Environmental Sanitation Cluster, Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Mrs. Florence Larbi, has received a Global Women Achievers Award, 2022 from India. The Global Women Achievers Award (TGWWA) was presented to Mrs. Larbi via zoom recently in recognition of her contributions in the environmental and sanitation space in Ghana. The Global Women Achievers Awards is organised annually by CMO Global and World Women Leadership and Congress & Awards--all in India, and is aimed at honouring outstanding women who have impacted societies positively. It also celebrates women who have excelled in various spheres of life. In a citation accompanying the award, Mrs. Larbi is recognised for her huge contributions towards the transformation and expansion of the Jospong Group of Companies. “With great passion for growing a local brand coupled with hard work, she was promoted and appointed the General Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited,” the citation read. Furthermore, the citation was full of praise for Mrs. Larbi’s contributions towards the management of municipal solid waste in Ghana. In a brief remark, Mrs. Larbi thanked the organisers for the recognition and urged all women in society to always aim high.
