The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, has embarked on an official visit to Sowutuom and Fadama in the western part of Accra to interact with residents and evaluate progress in the area's water supply.

The visit follows the recent rehabilitation and installation of new abstraction pumps at the intake point of the Weija Water Treatment Plant, a key facility serving Greater Accra.

The Minister was accompanied by the Board of Directors of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), its Managing Director, and three Deputy Managing Directors.

Addressing Journalists during the tour, Lydia Seyram Alhassan highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to improve water supply across the country.

She noted that the installation of the new pumps at Weija marks significant progress, stating:

"This is part of a broader government initiative to ensure sustainable water supply. In Greater Accra alone, the installation of two pumps has already improved water flow, and two additional pumps will be installed in January to further enhance capacity"

"Similar projects are underway nationwide, including in the Volta Region, Takoradi-Techiman, and Wenchi, all of which are nearing completion."

She revealed that the last major installation at the Weija Water Treatment Plant was carried out 24 years ago, emphasizing the importance of this upgrade in ensuring a sustainable water supply.

The Minister also expressed optimism about the broader impact of these projects:

"When completed, this initiative will significantly enhance water delivery not only in Greater Accra but across other regions. For instance, Keta, Wenchi, and Kumasi are all benefiting from ongoing projects aimed at transforming the water supply system"

During the visit, Lydia Seyram Alhassan toured several homes and schools in Sowutuom and Fadama to inspect water flow and listen to residents' feedback.

She assured them of the government’s commitment to addressing water challenges nationwide.

“This is a step forward in ensuring that every Ghanaian enjoys access to clean and reliable water. We are determined to sustain these gains and expand them to all regions,” she added.

The government’s efforts to revamp water infrastructure are part of a long-term strategy to address gaps in water supply, ensuring equitable access to clean water for all Ghanaians.
