UCC-STUDENT MURDER: Police nab 39-year-old suspect in Cape Coast

The Ghana Police Service has nabbed a 39-year-old man, identified as Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).


The suspect was apprehended by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on Sunday, June 15, 2026.


At approximately 7:15 p.m, Michael was apprehended at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast following sustained intelligence-led operations.


According to preliminary investigations, Mensah, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m.

Police investigations indicate that he subsequently transported her to Hutchland Beach, where she was reportedly last seen alive.


The circumstances surrounding the student's death remain under active investigation, and the Ghana Police Service has assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.


The incident has sparked concern among students, residents, and the wider university community, with many calling for justice for the deceased and improved security measures within and around tertiary institutions.

The Police Service has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that justice is served and has urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue.
