The Electoral Commission (EC) has called on the Ghana Police Service to swiftly deploy personnel to constituency collation centres across the country to remove party supporters whose presence is disrupting the collation process.
This appeal was made by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairperson of the EC in charge of Operations, during a press conference held in the early hours of December 8, 2024.
Mr. Tettey explained that the large crowds of supporters from various political parties gathered at the collation centres are hindering the smooth collation of certified results. He stressed the need for immediate intervention by security personnel to restore order.
“The Police must step in,” Mr. Tettey stated firmly. “The presence of supporters is impeding the process. The results being collated at the centres have already been recorded on the pink sheets at the polling stations, so there is no need for them to be there.”
He further urged political parties to exercise restraint and withdraw their supporters from the collation centres, emphasizing that the Electoral Commission would not accept any results produced outside of due process.
“The activities of these supporters are not only unnecessary but also obstructive. We call on the political parties to act responsibly and ask their supporters to leave the centres immediately,” he added.
The Deputy Chairperson assured the public that the Commission is committed to ensuring the integrity and transparency of the electoral process, and urged all stakeholders to cooperate fully to ensure a smooth collation of results.
