- Denmark Suspends Use Of AstraZeneca Covid Vaccine Over Reports Of Blood Clots
LONDON — Denmark announced Thursday it will temporarily suspend the use of the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. The Danish Health Authority said it would temporarily stop using the shot in its vaccination program as a precaution “after reports of severe cases of blood clots in people who have been vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca.” “Against this background, the European Medicines Agency has launched an investigation into the AstraZeneca vaccine. One report relates to a death in Denmark. At present, it cannot be concluded whether there is a link between the vaccine and the blood clots,” the health authority said in a statement. It did not specify how many reports of blood clots there had been, or where they had originated. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/sammy-gyamfi-is-very-keen-on-riding-the-vainglorious-self-publicity-wave-dela-coffie The announcement comes after a similar move in Austria at the start of the week, where authorities are investigating the death of one person and the illness of another after they received doses of the vaccine. Shares of AstraZeneca on the London market slipped 2.4% on Thursday morning. The University of Oxford would not comment on the announcement when contacted by CNBC. A spokesperson for AstraZeneca said the company was aware of the statement made by the Danish Health Authority that it’s currently investigating potential adverse effects related to the vaccine. “Patient safety is the highest priority for AstraZeneca. Regulators have clear and stringent efficacy and safety standards for the approval of any new medicine, and that includes COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca. The safety of the vaccine has been extensively studied in Phase III clinical trials and Peer-reviewed data confirms the vaccine is generally well tolerated,” AstraZeneca said in a statement to CNBC. Søren Brostrøm, director of the National Board of Health in Denmark, insisted that the 14-day suspension was a precaution while investigations took place. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/my-surname-is-john-not-rawlings-ex-prez-rawlings-reveals “It is important to emphasize that we have not opted out of the AstraZeneca vaccine, but that we are putting it on hold. There is good evidence that the vaccine is both safe and effective. But both we and the Danish Medicines Agency have to react to reports of possible serious side effects, both from Denmark and other European countries,” he said. Austria concerns Austrian health authorities suspended the use of batch ABV5300 of the AstraZeneca vaccine after a person was diagnosed with multiple thrombosis (formation of blood clots within blood vessels) and died 10 days after vaccination, and another was hospitalized with pulmonary embolism after being vaccinated. “The latter is now recovering,” the European Medicines Agency said Wednesday. However, the EMA added that “there is currently no indication that vaccination has caused these conditions, which are not listed as side effects with this vaccine.” The EMA noted that the same batch ABV5300 was delivered to 17 EU countries and comprises 1 million doses of the vaccine. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/local-news-rawlings-funeral-postponed-indefinitely “Some EU countries have also subsequently suspended this batch as a precautionary measure, while a full investigation is ongoing. Although a quality defect is considered unlikely at this stage, the batch quality is being investigated,” the EMA said. It added that its safety committee was reviewing the issue and “investigating the cases reported with the batch as well as all other cases of thromboembolic events, and other conditions related to blood clots, reported post-vaccination.” “The information available so far indicates that the number of thromboembolic events in vaccinated people is no higher than that seen in the general population.” As of March 9, “22 cases of thromboembolic events had been reported among the 3 million people vaccinated with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca in the European Economic Area,” the EMA said. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/breaking-news-j-j-rawlings-dies-at-73 U.K. and EU reliance Late-stage clinical trials found the AstraZeneca-Oxford shot to have an average efficacy of 70% in protecting against the virus. A more recent study by Oxford researchers found that the Covid vaccine was 76% effective at preventing symptomatic infection for three months after a single dose, and that the efficacy rate actually rose with a longer interval between the first and second doses. The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine is being relied upon heavily in the U.K. and European Union’s immunization rollouts. The U.K. has so far vaccinated over 22 million people with a first dose of a coronavirus vaccine and is currently only using the AstraZeneca and Pfizer - BioNTech shot. Source: CNBC
- "We Demand Justice For Lilian Dedjoe" – FIDA Cries
www. The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) is demanding justice for the late Lilian Dedjoe, who was allegedly battered to death by her husband, Charles Dedjoe. In a statement signed by FIDA-Ghana President Mrs Afua Addotey, the women lawyers said the news of Mrs Dedjoe’s death, “once again, raises questions regarding the effective protection of women and girls from intimate partner violence and domestic violence”. “FIDA-Ghana noted and commended the swift response of the police in arresting the suspect” – her husband, who is a businessman. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/sammy-gyamfi-is-very-keen-on-riding-the-vainglorious-self-publicity-wave-dela-coffie The women lawyers said continuing reports of intimate partner violence signal that advocacy strategies against domestic violence and intimate partner violence by women’s rights defenders “need to be deepened, to stimulate actions by state actors to bring perpetrators of intimate violence to account”. The lawyers said intimate partner violence has “cut short the lives of many women in Ghana” and “has negatively impacted the health of victims, devastated homes, and the wellbeing of dependents of victims of intimate partner violence”. Domestic violence and intimate partner violence, the group said, “are pervasive human rights concerns that have engaged the attention of women’s rights defenders in Ghana for over two decades”. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/local-news-political-parties-support-proposal-to-make-election-day-a-public-holiday The group noted that a study by the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) with support from DFID on the economic cost of violence against women in Ghana, (2014-2019) found that households in Ghana lost $286 million annually in income due to violence against women in 2018. The female lawyers said this calls for “increased political will to improve protection measures for survivors of intimate partner violence”, adding: “The feeling of being trapped in abusive relationships because of poor community support systems, weak enforcement of laws, lack of shelters, and the continual denial of women’s agency, demands an urgency to remove these serious obstacles to accessing justice”. FIDA-Ghana said strong support mechanisms, such as psycho-social support, and a “robust social protection system that empowers women to rebuild their lives, demonstrates state commitment to transform gender inequalities that fuels intimate partner violence”. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/registered-voters-can-access-their-details-on-the-ec-website-ussd-code-android-mobile-apps-ec Aside from the legal services, FIDA-Ghana noted that “women need financial stability to live independently”. “Their children need to grow in a healthy and peaceful environment where they do not have to be socialized negatively to believe that women must be beaten to demonstrate male dominance and misogyny. “The gaps in our legal and social protection systems allows such impunity to continue, and at the same time leaves a legacy of catastrophic consequences for a younger generation to perpetuate violence”, it said. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/breaking-news-j-j-rawlings-dies-at-73 “In so doing, we create a society that disrespects the sanctity of life and the basic human right to life and dignity which is enshrined in our constitution, as well as the universal declaration of human rights and other human rights treaties that Ghana has ratified”, the group added. FIDA-Ghana said it is joining its voice with other women’s rights organizations in calling for justice for Lillian Dedjoe. “We also call on the criminal investigations department and the divisional police handling the case to exhaust all possible means to carry out thorough investigations to ensure that justice is done. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/local-news-rawlings-funeral-postponed-indefinitely “FIDA appeals to the President to strengthen the country’s social protection system to benefit survivors and victims of intimate partner violence to enable them to attain an appreciable level of financial independence. “It is critical for survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner violence to find a place that can provide them with shelter. This is a pressing need which is long overdue, and we call upon the new Gender minister, Hon Adwoa Saro to explore the possibility of making this a reality”, the group appealed. FIDA-Ghana said it “believes that the criminal investigations department will ensure that justice is not denied to Lillian and trusts that a detailed and prompt investigation will be carried out to establish the truth behind her demise and deepen trust in the justice system”.
