Ghanaian Highlife singer Harry Abban says Nacee is the best to replace German-based music producer and sound engineer Bodo Staiger. Bodo Staiger died from an unknown cause last week. Founder of the Chale Wote annual event, Mantse Ayikwei has described their arrest as strange and unfortunate. Mantse Ayikwei, Nii Aryetey Aryeh, and an artist, Ampem Darko, were picked up by the police outside the Ussher Fort at Jamestown after the event held at Jamestown in Accra on Saturday, August 21, 2021. According to the Police, they ignored an invitation for a meeting prior to the event. The Ghana Education Service has described the laptops distributed to Ghana teachers as world-class. GES in a statement said the laptops are not of low quality as some have suggested but the brand is globally accepted. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Friday, September 3, 2021, launched and handed over 350,000 laptops under the ‘One Teacher One Laptop’ programme in fulfilment of the government’s pledge to equip Ghana’s teachers with the requisite ICT skills to prepare the next generation for the Fourth Industrial revolution. He underscored that effective teaching and learning is critical to developing the human capacity for work, innovation and creativity; necessary ingredients for capacity building. Teachers are indispensable pillars to this necessary capacity building. He said the initiative, in collaboration with the Teacher Unions, is to support the vision of the Ghana Education Service of creating an enabling environment to facilitate effective teaching and learning. Honor has been given to the memory of the late Comrade Kojo Mahama Adam (HON) who was laid to rest exactly 19 years today. Comrade kojo Mahama Adam, was the regional organising assistant of CDRs in the then Brong Ahafo region. He coordinated a lot of activities in the region prio to the emergence of the fourth Republic and the formation of the NDC party. The late Kojo Mahama Adam was the proposer of the Umbrella as the symbol of the NDC. He defended it as a symbol of unity, togetherness, protection that the nation needed for stability and unity. He went on to say, the beauty of an umbrella is lost when a single part of it is broken. An umbrella must have all its components together to stand in it's magnificence and to be able to protect each person beneath it . With this, he called for unity of purpose amongst the ranks of the party. Hon Kojo Mahama Adam contested and won the regional chairmanship elections in 2002 after the party had lost the 2000 elections to president kuffour. The late founder H.E Jerry John Rawlings called for a strategic NEC meeting right after the elections in his residence. A successful meeting was turned sour for the people of the then Brong Ahafo region when the news broke out of an accident that occurred in Suhum which took the life of this stalwart of the party. Former Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) slammed Government for prioritizing the distribution of laptops to teachers when textbooks have not been provided two years after the introduction of a new curriculum. For him, the absence of laptops has never been a concern for teachers who have threatened to strike over the non-provision of textbooks. Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast show Monday, September 6, 2021, Bernard Mornah wondered how teachers in rural areas without electricity were going to use the laptops since they rely on electricity for charging. “If you come from a community called Kparitinga, where they do not have electricity. And you’re a teacher there and you’re given a laptop, you should go and set fire on it to charge it? How are you going to use it?…So the laptop will be roasted so that it will be used? “…The problem that the teachers of today are confronted with, for which reason, they have threatened many times to go on strike, is not the issue of the absence of laptops…They are talking about the availability of even the textbooks so as to complement the so-called curriculum that you[ the Government ] have brought,” he explained. The Government has launched One Teacher, One Laptop Project through which all teachers are expected to receive one laptop each to facilitate their work as teachers. The Vice President recently handed over the laptops to the Ghana Education Service for distribution to the teachers. While many have hailed the project, others are critical of it, saying it is a misplaced priority given the current circumstances where textbooks and other essentials for effective teaching and learning are inadequate or totally lacking. President of Innovative Teachers Group, Stephen Desu says members reject the ‘substandard laptops’ procured by the government through the Ministry of Education to be shared to teachers in the country. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia last week officially launched the 'One Teacher, One Laptop' policy in Accra. The initiative aims to help teachers in public institutions [from KG to SHS] to secure laptops by just paying 30% of the cost while the government absorbs the remaining 70%. Amid the rollout of the initiative, several teachers have raised concern with the Innovative Teachers Group calling for investigations into the procurement of the laptops. Speaking to Joy FM in an interview on Tuesday, the president of the group, Stephen Desu described the laptops procured by the government as substandard. According to him, teachers deserve known brands such as Apple, DELL, HP and other popular brands. “The bone of contention now is not even about the question we are raising about procurement. It is about the quality of the laptops that has been prosecuted for teachers to us in Ghana. “This product called the laptop that the ministry of education has imported, we suspect that it is not standard that has been brought to Ghana. If it should be then do you think they will be using such standard laptops? They will be using Apple. We want known brands so that when they get spoilt they can be fixed,” Mr. Stephen Desu stressed.
