The family of the Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III, has threatened to stop the Ga Traditional Council from going ahead with the funeral service of their bereaved relative. According to the group, the Traditional Council has pushed them aside from the preparations of the funeral despite several calls for engagement. The family head, including six other persons, secured an interim injunction against the funeral, scheduled for Saturday, October 28. However, a member of the funeral committee, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, insisted that the funeral would go on as planned because they had not been served with the injunction. In an interview with Umaru Amadu Sanda on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, a member of the Ga Manye family, Abdul Salam, admitted that the Ga Traditional Council is yet to be served with the injunction. He said the injunction is against both the remains and the funeral. “We decide who to sue, if the suit fails, it should come from the court. The people [Ga Traditional Council] don’t have respect for the family. We will serve them with the injunction. The injunction is not just on the body, but also the funeral.” he said. Abdul Salam explained that they turned to the law court after the Ga Traditional Council failed to partner with the family in the preparations for the funeral. “The choice to go to the court is that our elders at the Ga Traditional Council, the funeral committee, have refused to reason with us,” he said. “And it is, as though, people are using power rather than the law, and we have been told time without number that the remains of our mother and queen belong to the state. And continuously, we have been told of this, but the fact is the remains belong to the wider family, that is the position of the law. We are talking about Naa Dedei Omaedru III, it’s our job as a family to also invite the Traditional Council because it is from the family that we elected and enstooled our mother and gave her for service to the state.” He added, “It is our belief that it should be a partnership between the family and the Ga Traditional Council. However, they are pushing us aside. We have been cautioning them to slow down so that we can talk and find a way forward, but our calls have fallen on deaf ears. The body is with the family, and not with them. It is the family that sent the body to the morgue. Everyone knows that the body is with us, but they have said that with or without the body, they will continue with the funeral.” Background Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III died in December 2022. A book of condolences was signed and opened by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on June 19, 2023. The final funeral rites of the late Ga Manye were slated from October 15 to 31 2023. The Ga Traditional Council recently revised its directive on the closure of shops ahead of preparations for the final funeral rites of the late queen, Naa Dedei Omaedru III. The Council previously directed that all offices and shops in the Central Business District in the Greater Accra Region be closed for three days from the 26th to the 29th of October. The Council in a new statement directed that offices and businesses be closed only on Saturday, October 28 and not the previously announced three-day directive. “This is an amendment to our previous notice of 4th September 2023. The Ga Traditional Council has determined that shops and markets within Accra should be closed on Saturday, the 28th of October 2023 only and not from the 26th of October to the 29th of October 2023 to the 31st of October 2023 as previously announced,” the council said in the new statement. “In addition, it is required that all markets, shops and offices in Accra should be draped in red and black, our mourning colours from the 15th October to the 31st October 2023. As part of activities earmarked to celebrate the Cyber Security Awareness Creation Month in October, each member of the Joint Cyber Security Committee (JCC) selected a day in the month of October to sensitise their employees on emerging trends in Cybercrime and Cyber Security on the theme, “Promoting a Culture of Digital Safety”. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as a member of the JCC took its turn on 20th October, 2023 at the EOCO Head Office in Accra. Present to mark the day were top Management of EOCO, high ranking officials from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Heads of Units and Officers of EOCO. The Director of Administration, PSO Edward Cudjoe in his remarks expressed his excitement for the collaborative effort because it was since consistent with Strategic Priority 3 of EOCO’s new 5-year Strategic plan. He noted that even though cyber-crime and issues of cybersecurity are issues that EOCO deals with on a daily basis, it is important that officers review and update their notes in order to be abreast with emerging crime trends. In the speech of the Director General of the CSA which was read by Mr Alex Oppong, the Acting Director of Capacity Building and Awareness, the Director General highlighted EOCO’s pivotal role in Ghana’s cybersecurity ecosystem. He also commended EOCO’s efforts at ensuring a safe cyber space in Ghana by fighting organised criminal groups operating online. He cited EOCO’s collaboration with the CSA and Bank of Ghana (BOG) which led to the arrest of four hundred and twenty-two (422) persons engaged in the operation of unlicensed Digital Lending Apps. The Deputy Executive Director (Operations) of EOCO, Bashiru Dapilah Esq. noted that by having a simple tool like a smart phone and access to the internet, cyber criminals can gain access to a target. He added that it is therefore important to ensure a safe cyber space by staying informed on new trends and share new information on measures that keep us safe online. In a presentation, the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of EOCO, SO Faustina Lartey, highlighted various safety measures to deploy in order to stay digitally secure and the dangers associated with clicking malicious links while on the internet. She further advised the gathering to stay clear of public Wi-Fi, public charging ports and the use of auto log-ins for apps on their digital devices since this exposes them to cyber-attacks. She further stressed that a false sense of urgency or pressure, accompanying a request for personal information, unsolicited contact by strangers, offers which are for “too good to be true” deals, unusual requests and suspicious links are some of the social engineering cues that people must look out for in order not to fall prey to the tricks of criminals. About 122 persons made up of both officers and guests benefited from the programme which was also streamed via Zoom to the regional offices of EOCO. President Nana Akufo-Addo's government is full of corrupt and arrogant people who think Ghana belongs to them, former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), prof Stephen Adei has observed. In his view, President Akufo-Addo himself has been a disappointment, adding that he will go down as one of the most disappointing presidents if he does not live up to his promises in the remainder of his presidency. “One of the greatest disappointments of Nana Akufo-Addo’s regime is that, honestly, he raised the hope of Ghanaians", Prof Adei pointed out, adding: "Ghanaians expected that they had gotten the leader with vision, charisma, determination, and it seems if he doesn’t redeem himself in the next 14 months, he will go down in history as one of the most disappointing leaders". The Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has said the Israel Hamas War could affect Ghana’s Economic projections but  says it is too early to tell the exact effect. The Minister spoke in the wake of an ongoing armed conflict between Palestinian militant groups led by Hamas and Israel which began on 7 October 2023, with a coordinated surprise offensive on Israel and an Israeli response leading to a full blown war. Due to the effect of the Russia Ukraine war on Ghana’s Economy, many Ghanaians expressed concern that the latest war may cause further problems for the Ghanaian economy. The Minister of State At the Ministry of Finance has answered the question in the affirmative saying Ghana could be affected. He made the observation during an appearance on Good Evening Ghana Tuesday with host Paul Adom Otchere where the Minister spoke about the general economic outlook of the country. Asked by Adom Otchere whether “the Hamas incursions in Israel going to affect anything in Ghana in terms of their projection?”, the Minister replied “I mean of course!”. “Of course.. This (Israel Hamas War) is an event that could engulf the whole world. To the extent  that it affects global supply of goods we import some of our goods including even the foods that we eat from other countries" "Israel export grains one of the largest and that could affect global happenings. ANNMENDS Foundation, a non-profit organization has held its second edition of pad-up a girl campaign at the Apewosika/Kokoado Village, Cape Coast in the Central Region. The PAD-UP a girl campaign was aimed at educating young girls of the benefits and usage of sanitary pads during their menstrual cycle. Speaking at the event, nursing officer, Unit Head of the Mental Health Department of Elmina Polyclinic, Cecilia Ama Sam said "It is very important for every girl to be able to use a sanitary pad during her monthly flow" She added that approved sanitary pads are not only well equipped and but also prevents leakage and as well bad odours. She charged young girls to desist from falling victims to guys or men who use sanitary pads to deceive girls and sleep with them. Nurse Cecilia Sam who doubles as a Girls Brigade of the Methodist Church Ghana and a volunteer appealed to parents to support their wards by buy them sanitary pads whenever it is the time of the month. Madam Cecilia Sam also demonstrated to the young girls how sanitary pads were fixed on pants and worn. There mist be a better and less destructive way of spilling excess water from the Akosombo Dam, Vice President Mahamusu Bawumia has said. One of those ways, he proposed during a tour of flood-ravaged areas in the Volta Region on Wednesday, 18 October 2023, is to divert tye excess water into the sea. So far, the floods, caused by the controlled spillage, has displaced more than 26,000 people, mostly in the Volta Region, destroyed swathes of farmlands as well as submerged homes. The last time such a disaster happened was 60 years ago, which necessitated the resettlement of some communities to their current locations. While touring the South and Central Tongu districts, Dr Bawumia said there was the need for the engineers at the Volta River Authority, managers of the dam, to find a lasting solution to the problem since, he fears this may not be the last spillage we would see. “Ten years ago, our worry was about the low level of water in the dam; today, we are worried about the high level of the water in the dam. So, climate change is bringing in new situations that we have to handle, and, so, I want to challenge the VRA and NADMO: let us start thinking of long-term solutions to this spillage from the dam" "Is there a way we can manage the spillage?" the vice president asked. "Of course, I am not an engineer, so, I want you the engineers to handle it", he challenged, pointing out. "But one thing I have thought of is: why can’t we have pipelines to the sea?"He, however, conceded that he was deficient in the subject. "But this is just someone who is not abreast of your field" "Can we manage this spillage in a way that does not flood the immediate areas, divert the water as far as into the sea?", he wondered. Dr Bawumia also empathised with the victims and said measures are being put in place to bring immediate and long-term relief to the communities affected.“ As you know, an inter-ministerial committee has been set up. VRA and NADMO are fully engaged in providing relief and the Ministry of Agriculture has also been tasked to start looking at how we will restore the livelihoods of the farmers along the banks of the river who have been displaced. The death of Akoto Ampaw, one of Ghana’s top legal brains has been announced in Accra. In a tweet on X by Asaase Radio, it said the lawyer for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the 2020 election petition died today. Known as ‘Che Che’ right from his student days at the University of Ghana, Mr. Ampaw was also part of the New Patriotic Party’s legal team in the Electoral Petition of 2013. Government has granted Barari DV Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Limited, a fifteen (15) year Mining Lease to commence the construction and mining of lithium at Ewoyaa in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region. The Lease incorporates new and enhanced terms intended to ensure that the country benefits, optimally, from this mineral. This includes an increase in royalty rate, State and Ghanaian participation, as well as value addition to the mineral mined. The granting of the Mining Lease follows the completion of prospecting and feasibility studies by the company, as well as series of negotiations between Government and the Company. The Lease covers an area of approximately 42.63 square kilometres, and grants the company the exclusive right to work and produce lithium and associated minerals in the area, in accordance with the mining laws of the country. Lithium is one of the main minerals used in the production of lithium-ion batteries, which is being promoted as a substitute for fossil fuels, as the world continues to battle with climate change. Emissions from the burning of fossil fuels by the internal combustion engines have been identified as one of the major contributors to the climate crisis. To deal with this, global leaders are promoting a green energy transition, to progressively limit, and ultimately, eliminate carbon emissions. Already, some countries have passed laws to phase out vehicles that use fossil fuels. This has created an emerging market for the battery industry, and minerals required for the production of batteries, referred to as green minerals or critical minerals. Currently, African countries that are mining lithium export the mineral in its raw state. Barari Ltd. commenced exploration for lithium in the country in 2017 and discovered high grade lithium in commercial quantities in Ewoyaa. Geological investigations, also, show deposits in various parts of the country, from the south to the north, predominantly around Cape Coast, Kumasi, Sunyani, Bole and Wa. However, the country is yet to commence the mining of this mineral. Speaking at a short ceremony to sign a Mining Lease for Barari DV Ltd., the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, said Government took a decision not to treat this mineral the same way the other minerals have been treated. It was, therefore, necessary to put in place a special policy for the exploitation and management of this mineral before granting any Mining Lease. He said after series of consultations, Cabinet approved a policy for the exploitation and management of green minerals including lithium, and the Mining Lease granted the company, incorporates the policy approved by Parliament. “The Lease we are signing today differs from our standard Mining Lease, in that, it incorporates the agreed terms we have concluded with the company, based on the Policy approved by Cabinet,” the Minister explained. Mr. Jinapor said the agreed terms give Government and the people of Ghana greater value in the mining of this mineral. Giving some highlights on the Lease, he said royalty rate has been increased to ten percent (10%) from the standard five percent (5%), and the State’s free carried interest in the mining operation has been increased from ten percent (10%) to thirteen percent (13%). In addition to the free carried interest, Government, through the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), will acquire additional six percent (6%) in the mining operation, as well as a 3.06% in the Company’s parent entity, which is listed on the Australian and London Stocks Exchange. The Minister said the Company would, also, be required to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange to ensure that Ghanaian entities, like pension funds, and individuals who want to invest in the this business can participate in it. According to Mr. Jinapor, the Company will, also, pay one percent (1%) of its revenue into a Community Development Fund, to be utilised for the development of communities impacted by their operations, and will work to establish a chemical plant for the processing of lithium. In the event that the Company is unable to establish a chemical plant, the Company will provide its lithium to any chemical plant established by third parties in the country. This will create more jobs and bring more development into the mining communities and the country at large. He said Government recognises the impact of mining on mining communities, and is committed to ensure that these communities, as well as Ghanaians who are, by law, the owners of these minerals, benefit from them. He called on the company to adhere strictly to the mining laws of the country and the agreement reached with Government, and to ensure that they engage in responsible, sustainable and environmentally-sound mining practices. The Executive Chairman of Atlantic Lithium Limited, Mr. Niel Herbert, thanked the Minister and Government for their cooperation in reaching this milestone. He said the Ewoyaa project is very important to the company, and the company is willing to work with Government to ensure the effective exploitation of this mineral for the benefit of Ghanaians. The Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF), a non-governmental organisation has cautioned government to be wary of its over- concentration of breast cancer activities only in October. According to MBCF, it is not the best and thus not helping in the fight against breast cancer in Ghana. Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, he said "I want the media to know that just as certain months are designated to highlight certain events, it is very important that we don't over-concentrate on the month. The months mean nothing" "If we advicate breast cancer in only October then we are trouble. Breast Cancer does not only occur in October" "Don't put all your energies in October, because people are getting breast cancer by the minute" "Government should be wary of over-concentration of breast cancer activities only in October" He revealed that Meena Breast Cancer Foundation is currently constructing a health facility at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region. He stressed that the facility when completed will have an OPD, Theatre, Breast Screening Centre, Laboratory, Dispensary, Consulting room, Nurses Station as well as male and female wards. "Globally, breast cancer is the 2nd leading disease causing mortality among women in Africa" Mr. Kwarteng explained that there were 4,482 breast cancer cases in Ghana with over 2,055 death according to a global observatory. He hinted that failure to regularly educate people about breast cancer is what leads to deaths. On her part Programmes Manager, Ministry of Health, Abena Saah said "Breast cancer is a global health issue, but it holds a particular significance for us in Ghana. The burden of breast cancer is substantial, with thousands of women affected by this disease each year" "It's essential for us to raise awareness, dispel myths, and promote early detection and prevention" "Breast cancer does not discriminate. It affects women of all ages, backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses. However, it is essential to recognize that early detection can significantly improve survival rates" She hinted that regular breast self-exams and mammograms are vital tools in identifying this disease at an early, more treatable stage. She notedthat the Ministry of Health is committed to addressing this challenge. "We have been working to increase access to healthcare services and education, particularly in rural areas, where awareness and resources can be limited" "Education and awareness are critical in the fight against breast cancer. We were very amazed" She hinted that in some communities, residents were reluctant to go for the screening of their breast while other had misconceptions. A breast cancer survivor, Joycelyn Yaokumah noted that breast cancer treatment are expensive hence appeal to government to come to their aid. She, however, thanked the leadership of Meena Breast Cancer Foundation for saving her life and supporting with some funds. Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) is to press for the promotion of the well-being of breast cancer patients in its maiden press conference. The press conference, scheduled for October 18, 2023, is to highlight pertinent issues affecting breast cancer care in the country. “The press conference has become necessary because of rising deaths among breast cancer patients, difficulty in accessing breast care because of high treatment costs and dwindling sensitization campaign on the disease,” a portion of the invitation read. MBCF seeks to bring together government representatives and other stakeholders at the conference in unity to promote the welfare of breast cancer victims. The Executive Director of Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF), Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng will lead the address as he speaks to the media on the issues earlier stated. It will be recalled that a year ago, Mr. Kwarteng lost his wife, Amina Oppong Kwarteng to the disease. The woman who vowed to champion advocacy and support for breast cancer patients did not survive treatment. Her dreams however did not die leading to the establishment of the Foundation. Since its establishment, hundreds of women have been supported to undergo treatment. Aside from treatment support, Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) is complementing government’s sensitization efforts. MBCF is also constructing a breast cancer centre in the Central region.
