Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has strongly criticized the recent detention of Phillis Naa Koryoo, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East.
Mr. Mahama asserts that this move, allegedly ordered by the National Security Advisor Albert Kan Dapaah and executed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Dampare, is unjustifiable and risks heightening political tensions in the country.
In a detailed statement posted on Facebook, Mahama highlighted the potential consequences of such actions.
He warned that detaining a political candidate, especially after bail has been granted, could escalate political temperatures and create unnecessary tension as the nation approaches critical elections.
He emphasized that the police and the IGP should not be manipulated to threaten the peace and stability of Ghana.
Mahama's statement called on key figures and institutions, including the IGP, the Peace Council, the government, and the general public, to recognize that justice is essential for maintaining national peace and stability.
He argued that using the police to intimidate opposition candidates undermines democracy and justice, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
"This action, taken on the instructions of the National Security Secretariat, will needlessly raise the political temperature in the country and spark avoidable tension," Mahama stated.
"The Police Service and the IGP must not allow themselves to be used to hang the peace and stability of our nation months before crucial national elections."
He further stressed that the intention behind Naa Koryoo's detention appears to be an attempt to intimidate her as she challenges Hawa Koomson, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, in the upcoming elections.
Mahama urged the IGP to reconsider the detention and release Naa Koryoo immediately, highlighting that the police must serve and protect all citizens regardless of their political affiliations.
The former president concluded his message with a call to action:
"It is high time the police fulfilled their duty to serve and protect all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations."
The hashtags #JusticeForNaaKoryoo and #FreeNaaKoryooNow accompanied his post, underscoring the urgency and importance of his appeal for justice and stability in Ghana.
