The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has launched an investigation into alleged fraudulent activities surrounding the acquisition of the Prestea-Bogoso Mine by Heath Goldfields Ltd. The agency has also directed the freezing of the transaction pending the outcome of the inquiry. The mine, previously owned by Future Global Resources (FGR), was transferred to Heath Goldfields Ltd, a Ghanaian company, in November 2024 after the government approved the acquisition. This move was reportedly aimed at revitalizing the mine, protecting jobs, and preventing environmental degradation following its closure in December 2023. However, EOCO’s investigation stems from claims of irregularities in the acquisition process. Notably, Heath Goldfields Ltd was incorporated on February 6, 2024, with a stated capital of GH¢10,000. FGR, which had acquired the mine from Golden Star Resources in October 2020, disputes the transfer and alleges the mine was taken from them just weeks before their planned listing on the New York Stock Exchange. FGR has formally issued a notice of dispute to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, and other stakeholders. The company is reportedly pursuing legal action to halt the transaction. In a letter dated December 23, 2024, EOCO instructed the Minerals Commission to provide all documents related to the acquisition under Section 19 of the EOCO Act, 2010 (Act 804). Over 100 shops have been destroyed, impacting numerous traders and their livelihoods. The Ghana National Fire Service responded promptly, deploying 13 fire tenders from across the Greater Accra Region to combat the blaze. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to bring the situation under control and prevent further damage. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. Former Ghana Black Stars player, Samuel Inkoom, has been granted a GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties in connection with an allege d visa fraud case. The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Susana Eduful, stipulated that each surety must earn not less than GH¢5,000 and ordered Inkoom to deposit his passport picture with the court registry. The retired footballer, who resides in Sekondi Takoradi, is accused of defrauding two complainants of a total of $6,000 under the pretext of securing United States visas. He denied the charges but has been directed to appear in court on January 22, 2025. According to Police Chief Inspector Tetteh Boafo, the first complainant, Madam Elizabeth Atarime Mboh Awuni, an entrepreneur from Oyarifa, Accra, allegedly gave Inkoom $4,000 after he claimed he could secure her client a U.S. visa within six weeks. A second complainant, Madam Abigail Owusu, a public servant also from Oyarifa, parted with $2,000 after receiving similar assurances from the accused. The incident reportedly began in December 2023, when Inkoom met Madam Awuni at Achimota while scouting young footballers. During their conversation, Inkoom claimed he was involved in a travel and tour business and could obtain U.S. and Canadian visas for interested applicants. However, after receiving the money, Inkoom allegedly failed to deliver the visas within the promised timeframe and went into hiding. The complainants, suspecting foul play, reported the matter to the police, leading to Inkoom's arrest. In his caution statement, Inkoom admitted collecting the money but claimed to have forwarded it to a partner in the U.S. to facilitate the visa process. Police investigations, however, revealed no such partner existed. As part of the investigation, $2,000 was recovered from Inkoom and returned to Madam Awuni. A tragic road accident on Friday morning has claimed four lives and left over twenty others injured when a bus traveling from Takoradi to Accra overturned near the Aggrey Memorial School intersection in Cape Coast. The vehicle, a passenger bus with registration number GW 6231-21, was carrying 53 passengers when it fell on its side at approximately 6:48 a.m., trapping several occupants. Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), police, and ambulance services collaborated to rescue the passengers. The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Abdul Wasiu Hudu, confirmed the incident and said the injured were rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and the University of Cape Coast Hospital for treatment. “Unfortunately, four passengers were confirmed dead at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, while 23 others with varying degrees of injuries are receiving medical care,” Mr. Hudu stated. Following a re-collation exercise on Saturday at the EC's old head office, the results show: Elikplim Akurugu (NDC): 50,732 votes Amb. Mike Ocquaye Jnr (NPP): 50,567 votes With a narrow margin of just 165 votes separating the two candidates, the constituency’s final outcome hinges on a decisive vote at the Abokobi Women Development Polling Station, the only polling station yet to conduct its election. A total of 689 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots at this polling station, a number significant enough to potentially swing the results in favor of either candidate. The tense re-collation process underscores the critical role of every single vote in this highly competitive election. The EC has assured stakeholders of a free, fair, and transparent process at the outstanding polling station to ensure the will of the people is accurately reflected.
