President John Dramani Mahama has officially called for a thorough investigation into the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

The appeal, made through his Secretary, Dr. Callistus Mahama, underscores the need to uncover the circumstances surrounding these incidents and provide justice for the victims and their families.

The request, outlined in a formal letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), was received by Sgt. Joshua Narteh at the IGP Secretariat on January 10, 2025.

The letter highlights the critical importance of addressing these deaths to uphold the sanctity of Ghana’s democratic process.

Key Proposals for Investigation

The letter detailed specific steps to ensure a comprehensive and transparent investigation, including:

1. Dedicated Taskforce: Establishing a special investigative team within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to focus solely on these cases.

2. Collaboration with Witnesses: Engaging eyewitnesses, victims' families, and other relevant individuals to gather crucial information.

3. Electoral Security Review: Examining the actions and roles of security personnel deployed at the affected polling stations.

4. Forensic Analysis: Utilizing advanced forensic techniques to analyze evidence such as bullet casings and weaponry from the crime scenes.

5. Collaboration with Electoral Bodies: Partnering with the Electoral Commission and civic organizations to review election-related reports for additional insights.

Dr. Mahama also emphasized the importance of periodic updates to maintain public trust and ensure transparency.

“This will help keep stakeholders informed and reassure the public of the police’s commitment to uncovering the truth,” the letter noted.

A Call for Justice and Accountability

The appeal reflects a broader concern about electoral violence and its impact on Ghana’s democracy.

Mr. Mahama’s office expressed confidence in the professionalism of the CID, urging swift and diligent action to bring closure to the victims’ families and restore confidence in the democratic process.

This development comes at a time when conversations around electoral reforms and security measures are gaining momentum in Ghana.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to be pivotal in shaping public perception and strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions.

The IGP is yet to issue a formal response to the request.
