An estimated 50 people contract HIV every day in Ghana, according to the latest data from the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC). The alarming figure was disclosed during the release of the 2023 national and sub-national HIV and AIDS estimates and projections. The report revealed that Ghana recorded 17,774 new HIV infections in 2023, comprising 16,076 adults (aged 15 and above) and 1,698 children (below 15 years). Currently, 334,095 people are living with HIV/AIDS in the country, including 17,550 children under 15 years. The data further indicates that the majority of new infections occur among individuals aged 15 to 49 years, a group considered the country's economically active population. Regions and Districts with Highest Prevalence The regions with the highest numbers of people living with HIV are: Greater Accra Ashanti Eastern Region At the district level, the highest prevalence was recorded in: Accra Metropolitan Area Kumasi Metropolitan Area Ledzokuku Municipality Progress and Challenges Despite a decline in new infections and AIDS-related deaths, the rate of decline remains insufficient to meet Ghana’s HIV reduction targets. Nana B detailed a timeline that begins in early January 2025. According to the statement, on January 2, 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta informed then-Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare of his travel to the United States for a medical follow-up, providing his contact details. He reiterated his situation on January 22, 2025, in a letter to the new Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, stressing his willingness to cooperate with any state inquiry despite being abroad for essential medical treatment. On January 24, 2025, the OSP issued a letter to Ofori-Atta’s residence, summoning him to appear on February 10, 2025, to discuss “suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses.” Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team promptly responded on January 31, 2025, clarifying that their client was undergoing critical medical observations and would inform the OSP of his return date once his treatment was completed. After months of scrutiny over allegations of fraudulent activities linked to the takeover, EOCO has officially cleared Heath Goldfields, lifting its freezing orders on the company’s accounts and allowing the transaction to move forward. In a letter dated February 10, 2025, and addressed to the Managing Director of Heath Goldfields, EOCO confirmed the discharge of its freezing orders. The letter, signed by Acting Executive Director Abdulai Bashiru Dapilah, revealed that the anti-graft body had conducted a preliminary investigation into the transaction between Heath Goldfields and the Minerals Commission following allegations of document falsification. However, EOCO concluded that there was no sufficient evidence to warrant further action. Background of the Controversy The Prestea-Bogoso Mine, formerly owned by Future Global Resources (FGR), a subsidiary of Blue Gold International, has been at the center of controversy since its acquisition. The mine had been inactive since December 2023 due to financial constraints, with the Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) confirming that operations had stalled, leading to power disconnections by the Volta River Authority (VRA) and GRIDCo over unpaid debts. In November 2024, the government approved the acquisition of the mine by Heath Goldfields Ltd, a Ghanaian-owned company, in a bid to revive operations, secure jobs, and restore economic activity in the region. However, FGR, which had been preparing to list on the New York Stock Exchange, challenged the transaction, arguing that the mine was wrongfully taken from them and handed over to a local company with limited capital. The company subsequently issued a dispute notice to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission, threatening legal action. EOCO’s Investigation and Freezing Order EOCO initiated its investigation in December 2024 after receiving allegations of fraud in the acquisition process. The Office directed the Minerals Commission to provide documents related to the mine’s registration and imposed a freeze on the transaction, invoking Section 33 of the EOCO Act, 2010 (Act 804), which empowers the agency to halt transactions under investigation. According to the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Ofori-Atta allegedly fled the country to evade corruption investigations. At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng announced that all indications suggest Mr. Ofori-Atta has absconded to avoid facing the OSP’s inquiries into alleged corruption during his tenure as Finance Minister. “OSP declares Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta a wanted fugitive. Mr. Ofori-Atta, you have two choices: you can return to the jurisdiction voluntarily or face the consequences,” Mr. Agyebeng stated. The Special Prosecutor also dismissed media reports suggesting that the OSP raided Ofori-Atta’s residence on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
