The labor ward is a war room. In there, people fight for their lives and those of their babies. If you have been in the labor ward before (not as a worker), your paradigm in life shifts greatly. You appreciate human life better because you witness the pain out of which it was birthed. In the labor ward, a woman is not beaten yet she wails unendingly. Some curse their husbands out of pain. Others hurl insults at anyone around them. The worse the labor pains get, the more some feel like giving up. Every man should have a taste of the labor ward before their life on earth is done. When men have an experience of the labor ward, it totally changes their perception about life and women. They cherish children and value their mothers and women even better. It is rare to find such abuse women. When you find a mother who will go any length to protect their children, you better understand what she went through to bring forth that seed. Men who stood by their wives in the labor ward will spare no chance in disciplining their children because they can’t stand all their efforts in the labor ward going waste. Though the labor ward is a place of pain, it is a place where so many life lessons can be learnt. Here are a few of such; Birth is death! Every woman in labor is filled with anxiety, no matter how many children they have already given birth to. It is an interesting but scary experience to observe childbirth. Giving birth via caesarean section looks like an easy escape route but when a woman gives birth vaginally, they stand at the crossroads of life and death. The lives of both mother and child can be lost. The moment of birth could be their moment of death! A dream is like a baby. If we don’t push it hard enough, it would have no life in it. It is at the point of conception of every dream that we remember all the obstacles we may face. Always be reminded that there will always be a thousand and one reasons a dream may never be possible. However, as long as we are willing to pursue such with all our might, nothing can stand in our way. The beginning of every dream is the most difficult phase. All the challenges we have never imagined flood us just when we are about to start a new dream. It is at this point that we may want to give up. If only we can put in more efforts to overcome the hurdles, our dreams will be born. The waiting period is always painful! If you ask most mothers, they will confess that labor pains were the worst pain they had ever felt in their life. In the dying moments when they waited for the birth of their little one(s), the pain pierced their hearts. At the point of birth, the thought of giving up crosses every mother’s mind because of the excruciating pain. Similarly, it is when we are nearest to the destination of our dreams that we feel like giving up. Of a truth, labor pains are worst when a baby is about to be born. The waiting period may be a few minutes but, to a mother, those minutes look like years. The pains almost tear apart their ability to think. No waiting period ever comes on a silver platter. In the waiting period of our dreams, a lot of frustration sets in. The consolation of our waiting period, however, is that it is close to the manifestation period. Even though a mother may be drowning in unimaginable pain at this point, she is hopeful that she will see her baby soon. If you are expectant in life, be hopeful. Like every mother, the waiting period may be painful but that is an indication that the destination is only a few miles away. It takes pain to gain! A pregnant woman’s nine-month journey is marked by pains of all sort. These pains reach their climax in the labor ward. The baby is pushed out in pain. Though a blessing, pain is what ushers a baby into the world. Every beautiful dream we want to usher into this world will be done in pain. It requires a great deal of discomfort to birth any dream. There will be heartbreaks when pursuing a dream. These setbacks should, however, not deter us. The road that leads to greatness is not tarred, hence, it won’t be a smooth ride. It will demand great sacrifice to achieve great results; sacrifice of our comfort and time. No great victory comes easily. The size of a dream will tell the size of setbacks we will face. Out of our pain, our dreams will be birthed. Like a pregnant woman in the labor ward, push out your baby in pain! A baby’s birth dissipates all the pain! A woman goes through a hell of pain in the labor ward. At the birth of the baby, however, all the pain she was experiencing somewhat vanishes. The melting moment when she sights her baby for the first time is when she heaves a big sigh of relief. All the pain has been breathed out! It is always painful to pursue any dream. There is little or no support. People reject us. Others boo us. We sometimes feel like giving up because the future looks so bleak. Like in the labor ward, the day a big door will be opened unto us, we will forget all the pain life has subjected us to. Our victory will dissipate all the pain. The day your prayers will be answered, you will forget about your losses. Keep pushing. Keep working hard at your dreams. Despite the setbacks, don’t give up. The day those dreams will be a reality, all the pain will be forgotten. A nine-year-old boy has been shot dead during a festival ritual at Awutu Bereku in the Central Region. Citi News’ Central Regional Correspondent, Calvis Tetteh, said the boy was killed during the performance of some rituals in the community ahead of the Awutu Awubia festival. The Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Lucille Hewlett Annan, has advised youths living in Chemunaa, a suburb of Accra to be security-conscious and report suspicious people in the community to the police. According to her, the lifestyle of some youths lately is questionable adding that reporting such persons will help reduce the grooming of other youths into such lifestyles. The Battor-Aveyime Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man suspected to have beheaded his 12-year-old relative at Mafi Dove in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region. The suspect, Dovi Tsidi, 26, allegedly beheaded 12-year-old Kofi Kuzagbe Tsidi on Sunday around 9:00 pm. A self-acclaimed prophetess has also been linked to the gruesome killing. The Ministry of Information has today held a development partner's conference aimed at media support programmes at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. According to the Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the conference, will push the development partners to coalesce around a common objective and come out with insightful ideas which will help boost the Ghanaian media. Speaking at the conference on Monday, the Minister said "An expression used by the British MP Edmund Burke in 1778 to describe the role of the media in the Governance system, remains true centuries on. Indeed, the 4th Estate of the realm is a major is a major influencer not just of our political and governance system but  even more importantly of value systems of the broader Ghanaian society" He revealed that it is important for the entire society to take an interest in what mass media projects and how it in turn affects the country’s governance and socialization. "Ghana has built for itself a robust culture of independent, free and fierce media practice since before independence. Despite the occasional sporadic incidents of media attacks and the complains about media misreportage by various segments of the society, Ghana’s media landscape continues to generally be the toast and envy of many globally" Explaining further, the Minister for Information stressed that the Ghanaian media practice has significant challenges. He added that in Ghana, though it are now nearing the completion of research work to collate empirically the most recent challenges of the media. "Acursory analysis already highlights a number of challenges that must be urgently attended to. Wikipedia’s narrative about media in Ghana among other things says — Despite its relative freedom, the media in Ghana does face some challenges. Journalists in Ghana are often poorly paid, under resourced, and often lack training. As a result, journalists in Ghana find themselves susceptible to many undesirable practices affecting the quality and altruistic nature of the work they are believed to be doing. # He hinted that in Nigeria there is more extensive research available on media challenges. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said "It highlights poor remuneration, acts of corruption among some media practitioners, urban elite-centered bias (increase in the gap between the urban and the rural news reportage), AND limited expertise among journalists. This is included in research done in 2015 on challenges and constraints of media in Nigeria by the researches , Kadiri Mohammed Raji and Sulemana" The Sector Minister added that such challenges manifest in various ways in the work of the media thus misreportage, amplification of opinions that are based on limited data, defamation and a feeling of media tyranny by some segments of the society. "In response, some have resorted to law suits, public call outs of the media and sometimes campaigns to undermine the work of the media. At other times some have resorted to limited supportive interventions such as training programs and supply of logistics and engagement to mitigate some of the excesses" He noted that the effort to support the Ghanaian media began several years ago. "Successive governments have attempted to aid the media with interventions that are targeted at helping resolve some of the challenges without seeking to unduly influence the media. Other development partners have at other times offered training on election reporting and other matters of peculiar interest to these development partners. The private sector actors have also at times offered training support for business or sector related reporting. The outcomes of such interventions have however, not been stunningly impactful. The recent examples of the media development fund of the previous administration and even the Mechanism on safety of Journalists by this administration should be humble reminders that we can do more in supporting the Ghanaian media than we are doing currently. Like the other estates of the realm that advocate for and genuinely deserve investments to improve the quality of output, so too does the media require relevant, timely, sustained investment to improve the quality of its output" He charged the development partners to explore how to coalesce around a set of media support programs that respond to the most pressing needs of the Ghanaian media and put our concentrated best energies behind them. He said "In 2019, the Ministry of Information collaborated with the media professionals themselves, stakeholder groups and academia to assist in fashioning out support programs that are most critical to the work of the media. In the end, the Ministry arrived at two media support programs; The Media Capacity Enhancement Programme  2. The Co-ordinated Mechanism for the safety of journalists" Kojo Oppong Nkrumah mentioned that the MCEP is designed to create a framework within which academia and practitioners develop and execute training programs for practicing producers, journalists and editors to enhance their capacity to deliver on their mandate. He also noted that the CMSJ is designed to continuously promote and ensure the maintenance of free robust environment for journalism. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah stressed that despite best intentions, these interventions have yielded limited results as will be pointed out in our presentations later today. He was confident that there is a potential to constitute some of the most impactful interventions in supporting the fourth estate if well funded and well executed. "For example after we commissioned on 4th May 2021, the CMSJ office under the auspices of the National Media Commission, the programs of the office though at its early stages have  already chalked some success in dealing with one issue involving the National Security Ministry and a CITI FM journalist" Additionally, the framework for curriculum developed by stakeholders for the media capacity enhancement program is also expected to help deal with the gaps in media practice and  enhance the media’s contribution to our growth and development agenda. "Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen; The importance of these initiatives in our nation building efforts cannot be overemphasized. We have, therefore, invited you all here today as development partners to join efforts with the state, in providing complimentary technical and financial support towards this endevour. Your partnership will help in ensuring that the limited impact of these programs and their true potential is widened to reach all the regions of Ghana especially in places where they are needed the most. Your human capital and your financial resources will go a long way in underwriting the success and impact that these programs can yield. We know that resources, post covid, are constrained the world over, but we also know that now is the time to make the necessary investments in our fourth estate so it can play its full role in stimulating quicker recovery and strengthening our democracy" Kojo Oppong Nkrumah challenged the private sector colleagues to play their part in ensuring there is success. "The Ghanaian media occupies a very significant place in our national life. It has the potential to multiply our best efforts. It also has the potential to take us down south. It must not be left on its own to prod through the dark, hoping to find its way to the very top. It must be assisted and supported with the best of our technical and financial muscle to make excellence, excellence of global repute, the norm and not the exception" He noted that it is the collective interest, State, Private sector and development partners to provide assistance in a coordinated, focused institutionalized, and nationwide manner if they intend to make the desired impact. A former Board Chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Professor Stephen Adei, has said the time is ripe for every government worker to publicly declare their assets to curb corruption. According to him, this will help the country to tackle corruption effectively. Delivering his keynote address at the maiden edition of the Governance and Business Leadership Awards, he said “we must tackle corruption frontally, it must start with modeling from the top. We must strengthen the anti-corruption institutions, we must change our laws. In our system, when you say the giver and the receiver are equally culpable, who [do you think] will report [the crime]? And if we say that people will not accept public office when we do that, my answer would be that if thieves don’t want to go into public service, we are better off,” he added. While acknowledging the sufferings of the public amid the pandemic, Prof. Adei urged public sector workers to exercise patience as the pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the economy. The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie has assured the country that the Veterinary Service Department under his ministry is doing its best to handle the disturbing bird flu situation which has hit the country. According to Dr. Akoto, the Veterinary Service Department is working tirelessly to ensure that the virus does not spread to other parts of the country. The Minister also revealed that about 110,00 birds have been affected by the bird flu. Members of the Land Survey Division of the Ghana Institution of Land Surveyors (GHIS) have been taken through the provisions of the newly passed land Act 2020(Act 1036) which seeks to address land issues in the country. Lawyer Kwame Gyan who lecturerd the professional surveyors indicated that, provisions in the law has made it possible for women to own a land without a man representing them at the time of acquiring. He made this known in an annual seminar of the Ghana institution of Surveyors with a theme "the Land Act and the land Surveyors" Touching on discrimination against women, Lawyer Kwame Gyan revealed that Article 17 of the Constitution frowns against such act. He said " Article 17 of the Constitution prohibits discrimination. Article 17 prohibits discrimination on the part of gender, greed, religion and political affiliation. What Section 11 has done is to say, if you are discriminating against anybody, and our main target was gender discrimination" Lawyer Gyan revealed that following some checks, women were not allowed to own land in their own right adding that they were expected to have men as counterparts while dealing in such issues. Lawyer Gyan mentioned that another innovation which had found itself in the statute was the customary land secretariat stressing that it has been institutionalized. "The Customary Secretariat which all the land owning entities, the groups would have to have now has legal legislative backing. So if you look at Section 13 all the way to Section 18 deals with Customary Land Secretariat" He charged all Traditional Owners to have their customary land secretariat. Meanwhile, the Chairperson for the Land Surveying Division, Christian Acquah has indicated that, the GHIS is working closely with the Attorney Generals to close pages on the survey council bill to be sent to parliament for consideration and passage. According to Chairman Acquah, the survey council bill which has been delay for some reasons when passed will harness the illegal activities of surveyors, deal with the code of conduct of the profession and also spell out the sanctions regeme. He said "The surveying council bill has been on the drawing board for a very long time but we have not left it, we are still pursuing it" He stressed that for the bill to be relevant, the division needs land owners and government to join forces to ensure that it is passed into law. Chairman Acquah said "Previously, it was Ministry of Works and Housing which was dealing with it later they said our Ministry is Lands and Forestry but later both Ministries were asked to put their heads together to ensure that the bill is passed" He hinted that as it stands the two Ministries are working tirelessly to ensure that Land Surveyors in the country have peace of mind to carry out their day to day activities.
