A leading member of the New Patriotic Party based in the United States, Arthur Kobina Kennedy, has revealed that some members of Parliament are being denied visas and being warned to stay away from the anti-gay bill currently before Parliament. Let us continue to educate the public.” Below is the full article: TOLERANCE AND THE DEBATE ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY IN GHANA The pending legislation about homosexuality in Ghana has led to unfortunate manifestations of intolerance. Parliament is considering a bill that would criminalize certain aspects of homosexual conduct in Ghana. In response, significant segments of the community, including Christian, Muslim, and traditional authorities have offered support. On the other hand, there is an impressive array of intellectuals and government officials who are opposing the proposed bill. Indeed, a significant part of the diplomatic community has weighed in, to oppose the bill. My goal today is not to opine on the merits of the bill. Indeed, I wish, in the words of the sages, we had “allowed sleeping dogs to lie”. The homosexual community, in my view, was doing fine, in their private spaces, subject to the protections of the law accorded to all citizens. Unfortunately, the opposition to the bill, motivated by the noble desire to promote tolerance for our homosexual community, has been characterized by intolerance. Some lawmakers, including the bill’s sponsor, Sam George have been threatened publicly and privately. Calls have been made to the Speaker, threatening MPs. Some have been denied visas and warned to stay away from this issue. It is said that this intimidation is coming mainly from the Western diplomatic community. In addition to democracy and the rule of law, the West exemplifies, to the eternal admiration of people like me, the attitude of tolerance. It is at the heart of multi-party democracy and the support of minority rights etc that make the West such a powerful example to the rest of the world. As JFK put it, “Tolerance implies no lack of commitment to one’s own beliefs. Rather, it condemns the oppression or persecution of others.” The West argued that dealing with China and Russia was better than isolating them. The West insisted on constructive engagement with Apartheid South Africa while we beat War drums. They were right. Let us not fight intolerance with intolerance. The next time there is an election dispute or tribal fighting and the West comes preaching tolerance, it would help if opportunists cannot remind us of Western intolerance! The problem with this bill is not the Parliament. It is reflecting public opinion. Let us continue to educate the public. There was drama at Akyem Tafo in the Eastern region when a car thief snatched a car from a military officer in a broad daylight on Sunday. Sargent Eric Okyere Agyapong, a physical training instructor of the Northern Military Command Headquarters, Tamale, is currently on attachment at the army recruit training school Shai Hills at about 1:40 pm Sunday, October 10, 2021, visited his wife and children at Akyem Tafo. Born on June 26, 1950, Maxwell Kofi Jumah is a Ghanaian politician and a former Mayor of Kumasi, former Member of Parliament for the Asokwa Constituency in the Ashanti Region. Early Life and Education Jumah hails from Amakom Antoa in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He was born on 26 June 1950 in his hometown. Kofi Jumah holds a Master in Business Administration Degree in Finance and International Marketing from Rutgers University Graduate School of Management, United States of America in 1983. He is an old student at Prempeh College. Career Jumah worked as the Managing Director of Ghana Distilleries Company Limited (GDCL) Political Career In May 2001, Jumah was appointed by then-President of the Republic of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor as the Kumasi Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. He then proceeded to represent Asokwa Constituency after winning his poll in the 2004 Ghanaian General Elections. He continued to represent his Constituency in the 5th parliament of the 4th republic of Ghana after being re-elected in the 2008 Ghanaian General Elections. In August 2007, he was sworn in as deputy local government rural and development Minister by the President of the Republic of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor. He served in that role till 6 January 2009 when power was handed over to the John Evan Atta Mills government. Elections Jumah was elected as a member of parliament for the Asokwa constituency of the Ashanti Region of Ghana for the first time in the 2004 Ghanaian general elections. He won on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party. His constituency was a part of the 36 parliamentary seats out of 39 seats won by the New Patriotic Party in that election for the Ashanti Region. The New Patriotic Party won a majority total of 128 parliamentary seats out of 230 seats. He was elected with 42,942 votes out of 55,771 total valid votes cast. This is equivalent to 77% of the total valid votes cast. He was elected over Mahama Nyaba of the People's National Convention, Ishmael Butler of the National Democratic Congress, Peter Amankwa of the Convention People's Party, and Kobina Amo-Aidoo an independent candidate. These obtained 660, 9,155, 512, and 2,502 votes respectively of total valid votes cast. These were equivalent to 1.2%, 16.4%, 0.9% and 4.5% respectively of total valid votes cast. In 2008, he won the general elections on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party for the same constituency. His constituency as part of the 34 parliamentary seats out of 39 seats won by the New Patriotic Party in that election for the Ashanti Region. The New Patriotic Party won a minority total of 109 parliamentary seats out of 230 seats. He was elected with 34,801 votes out of 55,819 total valid votes cast. This was equivalent to 62.35% of the total valid votes cast. He was elected over Kwaku Baah Bonsu of the National Democratic Congress and Gyimah Akwanuasah an independent candidate. These obtained 7,653 and 13,365 votes respectively of total valid votes cast. These were equivalent to 13.71% and 23.94% respectively of the total votes cast. The Ghana cedi has experienced further depreciation against the US dollar in the first week of October, despite the inflows of foreign currency which have given the economy enough forex to cover imports for five months. The cedi as of Friday October 8, 2021 – according to the Bank of Ghana daily interbank FX rates data – had depreciated by 1.83 percent, a slight deterioration from the 1.76 percent recorded at the end of September. Currently, the cedi is selling at GH¢5.86 against US$1 compared with the GH¢5.76 it traded at at beginning of the year. This makes the depreciation of 1.86 percent the highest since the beginning of the year. As of August 2021, the reserve position of the economy was US$11.4billion, representing 5.2 months of import cover. “We are all being very vigilant and this is why we hold reserves: so that even if we have to have an exchange rate adjustment, it can be managed so you won’t have a disorderly adjustment. I believe we have a relatively comfortable position with 5.2 months of import cover. “Obviously, you might say that as the economy is beginning to recover there will be more demand for foreign exchange, but I don’t think that it should present any negative effect to the cedi’s outlook,” he said in a press meeting at the end of September during the policy rate announcement in Accra. A case of incest has been leveled against the National Democratic Congress’ Central Regional Communication Director, Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood. According to a report by the Daily Guide newspaper, the NDC executive allegedly had sex with his underage daughter, impregnating her in the process. The paper continued that Emmanuel Dawood had been having uncarnal knowledge with his daughter since 2019 when she was 15-years-old. He did not look after me,” the girl is reported to have said. My daughter has been in distress and has said she needs nothing but justice,” the mother is quoted to have said. Ghana are back to winning ways in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers after a 3-1 home win over Zimbabwe on Saturday. Ajax ace Mohammed Kudus, Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey and captain Andre Ayew scored for the Black Stars in the Group G matchday three fixture in Cape Coast, with The Warriors consolation coming from skipper Knowledge Musona. On the table, the West Africans, who lost 1-0 away to South Africa in their last match, sit one point adrift of Bafana Bafana, who beat Ethiopia 3-1 in the other group game on Saturday. Thorsten Owusu Gyimah, better known by his stage name Yaw Tog, has revealed that he was forced to sign a bond in school because his parents didn’t want him to skip classes in order to concentrate on his music career. The young bull who recently completed his secondary education at the Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS), said his headmaster had to force him to sign a bond of good conduct, promising never to miss school for his music career until he finished his last paper. Yaw Tog claimed in a recent interview on the grounds of his school that he didn’t have the freedom to do as he pleased even after achieving international recognition as a result of his schooling. He stated that his headmaster had to have him sign a bond in order to keep him from interfering with his studies. He said that the bond he signed forced him to miss roughly 50 concerts, which he claimed had a negative impact on his business. He who played at the Ghana Party In The Park in the United Kingdom while still studying for his final test, stated that he is now planning to release more hit songs and devote all of his resources and efforts to his music brand. I would like to urge potential presidential aspirants to emulate the tenacity, commitment and unwavering love of President Akufo-Addo for Ghana and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if they truly desire to lead NPP for 2024 general elections. Breaking the 8-year-cycle curse requires Presidential Aspirants who will not quit or undermine the collective efforts of the party, maybe through unjustifiable resignation as result of the inability to get the nod from the delegates of the Party. We have to fully remain committed to the Victory 2024 agenda whether your candidate win the Flagbearership or not. Now let's consider the political sufferings and batispm of President Akufo-Addo: 1. Nana Akufo-Addo as the 1st National Organizer of NPP and Campaign Manager to Prof. Adu Boahen was rejected by the party when attempting to be the Flagbearer of NPP in 1998. There is no denying the fact of the major and instrumental role he played in the formation of NPP from the Danquah-Busia Club. Yet Nana Akufo-Addo was never bitter and abandoned the party. He fully supported the Presidential candidate and the party for the victory in the 2000 general elections. 2. In 2007, when it was unquestionably obvious that Nana Akufo-Addo was going to lead the party for the 2008 general elections yet 16 other people contested him for the flagbearership position. He was bastardised by the supporters of the other aspirants thereby giving arsenals to the opposition to vilified him ahead of the 2008 general elections yet Nana Akufo-Addo rallied everyone for the elections to the extent of appointing a competitor's Presidential Aspirant to served as Director of Communications. After the 2008 elections, the appointed Director of Communications wrote: “Chasing the Elephant Into the Bush” which became a weapon for the NDC in 2012 general elections. 3. Ahead of the 2012 and 2016 general elections, some of the people who served in the first NPP government deserted Nana Akufo-Addo. It took the efforts of Akufo-Addo to recruit and nurture fresh young people for the task in the 2012 and 2016 general elections. Adding insult to injury, some of the old party gurus constantly attacked Nana Akufo-Addo in the media space and incite Ghanaians against the candidature of Nana Akufo-Addo. This should not remind us of anything but lessons we must learn. 4. In 2021 January, Nana Akufo-Addo was betrayed again by some NPP Members of Parliament by electing an opposition person as the Speaker of Parliament as against the choice of the party. Nana Akufo-Addo is the first President in the 4th Republican Constitution to work with a Speaker of Parliament who is from the other side of the political divide. 5. President Akufo-Addo committed his government to the protection of the funds of depositors through the Banking/Financial Sector clean-up exercise. A lot of public funds were pumped by President Akufo-Addo to save several banks from collapsing yet some Ghanaians were angry at Akufo-Addo for saving several banks from collapsing and protecting the funds of thousands of depositors. These Ghanaians vowed to campaign and vote against Akufo-Addo in the 2020 general elections for doing the right thing of saving banks/financial institutions and funds of depositors. 6. The decision of President Akufo-Addo to stop galamsey in order to prevent the Country's water bodies from being destroyed was greeted by anger and sadly some Ghanaians especially in the galamsey areas and communities vowed to campaign and vote against President Akufo-Addo in the 2020 general elections. It was quite surprising when some people decided to campaign and vote against President Akufo-Addo in the 2020 general elections simply because his Government has decided to protect the Country's water bodies as well as ensuring the sustainability of the environment and survival of the humans, plants and animals ecosystems. However, after the 2020 general elections, President Akufo-Addo never give up even though the Parliamentary Candidates of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) miserably lost their seats in the Constituencies where the activities of Galamsey were very predominant. President Akufo-Addo in his second term in office has still committed resources to the fight against galamsey and that is the hallmark of quality leadership. 7. Nana Akufo-Addo is the only President in the 4th Republican Constitution with the implementation of most policies and programmes such as free SHS, 1D1F, Digitalization, free TVET, Planting for Food and Jobs, 1 Constituency 1 Ambulance, NABCO, 1 Village 1 Dam etc. President Akufo-Addo has to his credit also social interventions such as free water, free electricity during the Covid-19 major period, yet some Ghanaians decided to vote against him and his Parliamentary candidates in the 2020 general elections. In spite of this, President Akufo-Addo is still focused on addressing the needs and challenges of Ghanaians by providing first-class governance to the good people of Ghana. Let's emulate the political struggles of President Akufo-Addo, stay united for Victory 2024.
