Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, known on stage as Medikal, has been reportedly arrested by the Ghana Police for allegedly brandishing a gun on social media. Medikal flashes newly acquired American pistol on social media Reports by Hitz FM say Medikal is currently in the grips of Police. Medikal, together with his wife, Fella Makafui, were at the Accra Regional Police Command charge office today. Medikal’s arrest comes after Pulse.com.gh reported last two weeks that he brandished a newly acquired American pistol on his Instagram page. The rapper was at the Accra Circuit Court earlier today to support his remanded “Godfather” Shatta Wale. Shatta Wale and two others; Nana Dope and Gangee were all denied bail in court today. Bishop Stephen Akwasi Appiah who gave the false prophecy, on the other hand, was denied bail by the court. He is being charged with causing fear and panic. He is also to reappear on October 25, 2021. The Accra Regional Criminal Investigation Department has also written to the manager of Accra Fm, the radio station whose platform the Bishop used for the prophecies, to release a copy of the recorded program. Shatta Wale, Nana Doe his manager, and two others were remanded by an Accra Circuit Court on Thursday, October 21, 2021, during their first appearance in court. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated his administration’s commitment to continue partnering with the private sector to improve sanitation in the country. He intimated that disposal of solid waste and establishment of waste treatment facilities required huge investment, stressing that government alone cannot shoulder that responsibility. President Akufo-Addo made the statement when he commissioned the second phase of the 20-million Euro Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP) yesterday at Adjen Kotoku in the Greater Accra Region. He commended, especially the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) for its “relentless” efforts to support government to make Ghana the cleanest country in Africa. The second phase of the ACARP, which adds 800-tons line to the existing 600-ton facility, will provide metropolitan municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) within Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) a viable and cost-effective alternative to dumpsites. It will also increase the plant’s capacity to bridge the existing gap of untreated solid waste within the GAMA. The Executive Chairman of Jospong Group of Companies, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, disclosed that the project was made possible with the support of their partners, Lubo Recycling Systems of The Netherlands. He disclosed that the expanded ultra-modern facility will add 1400 more tonnage to its existing capacity of 600 tonnes of solid waste treatment, adding that this will further bring the total plant capacity to 2000 tonnes. “Additional eight (8) equipment are being manufactured by Lubo Bollegraaf Group for the Integrated Recycling and Composting Plants (IRECOP) in Ho, Takoradi, Tamale, and Techiman among others,” he revealed. It will help meet the growing demand for organic compost for soil enhancement, and also provide sustainable material and energy recovery solutions to the high or increasing levels of recyclables in our Municipal Solid Waste processing, he further added. According to him, the newly expanded plant will have other new features including sorting, composting and plastic recycling to the existing structure. Among other benefits of the project, he said, were offering sustainable material and energy recovery solutions to the high or increasing levels of recyclables in municipal solid waste. The plant which started with a workforce of 150 will be adding an additional 200 more. Dr Siaw Agyepong, therefore used the opportunity to express appreciation to the Ministers of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Greater Accra Region, Henry Quartey, and Local Government and Rural Development Mr Dan Botwe He also commended his partners, Members of Parliament (MPs) in the various Parliamentary Select Committees under his scope of operations and Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) among others. The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), Dr. Kweku Afriyie has revealed that the need to address climate change is a global one despite it being an all-encompassing threat that is happening now, destroying livelihoods and costing lives. According to Dr. Afriyie, though Ghana is a small emitter of Green House Gases over the years, it is joining forces to together combat climate change and contribute to addressing the multitude of problems that comes with it. Speaking at a COP 26 press briefing in Accra on Thursday, the sector Minister said “Climate change currently is threatening the world’s poor on a huge scale. The most vulnerable will face water shortages. Changes to agricultural cycles will threaten food security across entire regions. Rising sea levels will displace communities in both rural and heavily urbanized environments” The Minister also mentioned that some efforts made by Ghana include the development and implementation of relevant national climate change policies and the signing of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Climate Agreement. Dr. Afriyie disclosed that Ghana in September 2016 submitted its Nationally Determined Contributions to the PA, involving thirty-one adaptation and mitigations actions to cover seven economic sectors. “The updated Nationally Determined Contribution cover 19 policy areas and translates into 47 mitigation and adaptation programs of action. There are 34 mitigation programs of action which are envisaged to generate absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions of 64 MtCO2e from 2021 to 2030” The Sector Minister told Journalists that Ghana requires between US$9.3 and US$15.5Billion of investments to implement the 47 nationally determined contribution measures from 2020 to 2030. He stressed that US$3.9Billion would be required to implement the 16 unconditional programs of action till 2030. “Ghana has submitted an interim nationally determined contribution to the UNFCCC while awaiting the updated NDC to undergo high-level political consideration and approval processes” The Sector Minister noted that as the United Kingdom (UK) hosts COP26 in Glasgow from 1-12 November 2021, it will afford Ghana, the opportunity to contribute to global discussions on climate change, showcase national efforts at mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change. He hinted that Ghana’s delegation will be led by President Akufo-Addo. Dr. Afriyie told Journalists that Ghana will be expecting the rule book on Article 6 will be concluded to enable the country to attract investments through the carbon markets. “The Ministry of Energy, Transport, Food and Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, Forestry Commission, Energy Commission, British High Commission, UNICEF, and UNDP have ensured that Ghana has procured a pavilion and office space” he revealed. On her part, the Charge d’affaires for the British High Commission to Ghana, Beth Cadman said “We are proud hosts of COP26, in partnership with Italy, the largest diplomatic gathering on UK soil” She revealed that the event is expecting over 30,000 delegates to visit Glasgow adding that its Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has even described it as a turning point for mankind. She noted that the UK has just announced its Net Zero Strategy, setting out how it will reach zero emissions by 2050. “We are sure those objectives will also resonate in Ghana - and it hopes that Ghana will be able to develop similar plans in the future” She again noted that the UK is playing its part to ensure that rich countries provide the finance that develop countries need to adapt to climate change. Madam Cadman praised Ghana for prioritizing its needs at the COP adding that the country’s voice is vital to spurring action. “The UK established a record for climate reduction commitments in June 2021, bypassing into law a commitment to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035. “This shows that the UK is willing to do what is needed to limit the world to 1.5 degrees of warming. It has helped to generate momentum, such as the recent commitment of China to halt overseas coal financing and in September, Turkey announced it will ratify the 2015 Parish Agreement” She, further, mentioned that the UK is very happy to have had such a positive relationship with Ghana in the run-up to COP26. She noted that COP26 is critical for Ghana adding that the country is under real and present threat from climate change. The Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu expressed his outfit’s willingness to continue to provide technical leadership on climate change in Ghana. He added that the EPA will avail itself to supporting the COP26 preparation process and beyond. “Note that climate change is one of the defining development issues of all time and is another pandemic in awaiting if the international community fail to act fast with ambition” He told Journalists that it is time the international community puts its best foot forward to make climate change count adding that COP26 is a fine opportunity to deliver hope. Dr. Kokofu noted that the EPA has been instrumental in preparing the Ghana team ahead of COP26 which led to a pre-COP meeting on Tuesday, October 20, 2021, in Accra. President Akufo-Addo rendered the apology following an interview he granted an Accra-based radio station on Thursday morning. President Akufo-Addo said "Let me confess, I made a mistake on the Cape Coast" He also added that even with the mistake, the country ought to have a rethink. "We cannot have a harbor at Takoradi and Elmina and have another one at Cape Coast" "But I have to apologize to the people of Cape Coast" President Akufo-Addo also stressed that Presidents are humans who are bound to make mistakes. The Vice President, Dr. Mahamadou Bawumia has revealed that Technology Giant, Google is set to allow Ghana to integrate its digital address system unto its mapping system by the end of this year. According to him, Ghana engaged with Google since lastear of which the country has now obtained the agreement. Speaking at the openeing ceremony of the YouthConnetk Africa Summit, he said "We have engaged google since last year and we have now obtain the agreement because they have to go through technical processes to evaluate our GPS digital system and so by the end of this year, goggle have agreed to allow us to integrate our digital address system into goggle maps. So people can use them here in Ghana” Dr. Bawumia also added that the Akufo-Addo administration is using technology to solve the many challenges facing the country. Sharing his thoughts on the theme: “Africa Beyond Aid: Positioning the Youth for the Post COVID Economic and AFCFTA Opportunities in Accra, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stressed that his government has also discovered that a lot of the youth do not have bank accounts adding that it has excluded them from the financial system. He said "We also discovered a lot of the youth don’t have a bank account and therefore excluded from the financial system which we have tackled it through the mobile money interoperability system making it possible for about 90 percent of the youth having bank accounts”, On her part, the Assistant Secretary General and Director – UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa underscored the importance for African governments to come up with youth based policies which will do away with poverty on the continent. “Poverty is on the increase in general, and that extreme poverty in particular is rising at alarming proportions. This is a trend that has been exacerbated by the Covid 19 pandemic – but one that nonetheless exposes the faulty lines in the development models that prioritized neither provision of services, inclusion, nor maximizingof Africa’s resources for Africa’s development.” “The spotlight on Covid-19 should usher in a new page that accelerates action on Africa’s Beyond Aid Agenda” she noted. The Ghana Police Service has hinted that it has arrested a dangerous armed robbery and murder suspect, Godstrong Tettey, at Adeiso in the Eastern Region. According to the Ghana Police, the arrest was made on Wednesday 20th October, 2021. The Ghana Police revealed that the suspect has been on its wanted list for alleged murder, car-snatching cases and violent landguard activities. Godstrong Tettey had become notorious when he was seen in a widely circulated video on social media, brandishing a pistol. Police intelligence led to his capture at Adeiso and items retrieved include two pump action guns, one locally manufactured pistol and one new foreign-manufactured pistol. The operation forms part of the Police Administrations’ resolve to weed out criminals from the society. The Ghana Police Service has also stressed that such intelligence-led preventive policing and strategic operations will continue. The Police Service, however, commended the public for the enhanced partnership in fighting crime. Ruweida Yakubu, the wife of former Black Stars player, Odartey Lamptey, has opened up on how she deals with the issues surrounding the latter and his ex-wife. According to her, as a woman in the middle of such a situation, it was not pleasant but she still tried to perform her duty as a wife. “I am a human being. I have feelings and when the whole divorce brouhaha started, I was also sad for him. I tried to encourage him and asked him to be patient, supporting him and helping him with prayers to help him out of his challenges,” she said. The wife, who is now into tennis, said in this whole brouhaha, she and her husband have been able to lay low and take things slowly. Speaking on her ordeal, she said people even say disgusting things on social media but she tries hard to face them. “The last time something came up and people were on social media making harsh commentaries, saying that my husband is too soft, was not man enough and urging him to go and attack his ex and lots of harsh words, I felt that was too much for him and even the kids. “I have had people attack me verbally and I remember one time in a market, a woman saw me and started hurling insults at me that I am the cause of the mess, but I didn’t talk. As a family, we are dealing with it on a low level,” she told TV3. Mr. Lamptey is now married to madam Yakubu. The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has filed a criminal complaint at the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) against Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale. The group filed a complaint against the musician for publishing false news. Popular Comedian and actor Benson Nana Yaw Oduro Boateng known as Funny Face has been referred to the Psychiatric Hospital for re-examination by the Kaneshie District Court. This was after he was charged with one count of threat of death by the Kaneshie District Court. Even though the charge was read to him in the court presided over by His Worship Kofi Oheneba-Kuffour, his plea was not taken because of his behavior. In court on Wednesday, October 20, Funny Face stirred drama when he told the court that, he had lawyers but told them not to come to court because he caused his own problems. Prosecution led by ASP Sylvester Asare told the court not to heed the plea of the accused person because they suspect he is unstable. The court after listening to the Prosecutor and the accused person, directed that the accused person be sent for a psychiatric re-examination. The case has been adjourned to November 10, 2021. The brief facts of the case as presented to the court by ASP Asare were that the accused, Benson Nana Yaw Oduro Boateng known as Funny Face is a Comedian, Actor and musician by profession who resides at Sector, millennium city, Kasoa. He said, the accused person was married to one Lizzy but divorced in 2017. According to him, in 2020, the accused person got engaged to one Vanessa and had twins with her. He explained that, in February 2021, Vanessa fled with the twins after they broke up to an unknown destination. The prosecutor said, on October 27, 2021, the accused person took to his Instagram page and threatened to kill his ex-wife Lizzy and girlfriend Vanessa that he was going to kill them and commit suicide. “Accused person in his caution statement blamed the action on depression and his failure to take his drugs given to him when he was sent to the psychiatric hospital for treatment. “Prosecution suspects the accused person is mentally unstable and pleading with this Honourable Court to give an order for the accused to be re-examined,” he told the court.
