The Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II is proposing a change of name of Greater Accra to the Ga-Adangbe Region. He told President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that, he [Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II] has already initiated the move for the name change and will need the help of the President for the name change. Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II said this when President Akufo-Addo called on him at the Ga Mantse Palace on day two of his tour of the Greater Accra Region on Friday (October 22, 2021). He also appealed to President Akufo-Addo to ensure that teachers who undergo training in the Ga-Adangbe language at the various colleges of education are posted in the Greater Accra area so that they can teach the language, which he said was losing grounds in terms of teaching in the region. Today, we want to celebrate a noble and dignified Police Officer, Chief Inspector Francis Mawuli Sosu as he draws the curtains to the end of his 39 years of service to Ghana. The journey of Chief Inspector Francis Mawuli Sosu, who is affectionately called FM by his colleagues, began some 39 years ago when he was enlisted into the Ghana Police Service on 1st March 1982. It was at the time, not the much sought-after road that it is today. Chief Inspector Sosu was posted to the Regional Police Headquarters, Ho, after passing out as a Constable. He was later transferred to the National Police Headquarters, Quartermaster Stores Accra, on May 6, 2002. By dint of hard work, he rose through the ranks steadily to become the Station Officer and subsequently a trainer for personnel posted to the Quarter Master Unit. From 2005 to 2006, he had the opportunity to serve in Darfur on the African Union Mission (AMISOM) where he held the position of Teamsite Administrative Officer and was recognized as and awarded the best Teamsite Administrative officer on October 14, 2006. Chief Inspector Francis Mawuli Sosu returned to Ghana after distinguished service in Darfur, to continue his work as the Station Officer at the Quarter Master Stores, Headquarters, from where he is finally retiring today. He is a man of dignity and gives respect to both his superiors and subordinates. Adorned with a beautiful smile and a soft voice, Chief Sosu is loved by all. Apart from work, he is known to spend time with his family; his lovely wife and two children. WhatsApp will stop working on some Android and iOS devices from November 1. The Facebook-owned messaging app keeps updating its software requirements regularly and shares it on its Help Centre. Starting from November 1, WhatsApp will only be compatible with devices running on Android OS 4.1 and above, iOS 10 and above, or phones running on KaiOS 2.5.1 or above, which include the JioPhone and JioPhone 2. If you wish to check the operating system version that your phone is running on, you can visit the ‘Settings’ on your device and tap ‘About Phone’ to find out. If you are using an older version of Android or iOS, you can update it to the latest version easily. But there are some devices that will not support any further updates and WhatsApp won’t be compatible with them. It is highly unlikely that you still own any of these devices since most of them are at least 10 years old. If you own any of these devices, it’s time you upgrade it to keep using WhatsApp. iPhone With Apple slated to release iOS 15, iPhones starting with iPhone 6s or newer will receive the latest version of iOS. iPhone 5 and newer can also be upgraded to iOS 10 and are compatible with WhatsApp’s current requirements. Older devices that won’t be able to use WhatsApp after two months will be iPhone 4s and older. President Akufo-Addo has launched the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ initiative in Accra. The initiative by Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), is to ensure all households and organizations clean and beautify their frontages to complement the government’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa. The initiative will also see to the training of some 3,000 civilians under the ‘City Responses Team’ and will be mandated to enforce the bye-laws to govern the initiative. The waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has been contracted to create refuse collection points in all the 29 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) of the Greater Accra Region. Launching the Clean Your Frontage Campaign at Independence Square on Friday, October 22, 2021, President Akufo-Addo said the initiative will change the mindset of Ghanaians toward the environment. “This campaign is a good step in achieving the vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa,” he said. He noted that over the years challenges with sanitation have had to do with logistics, enforcement of bye-laws, and attitudes of the citizenry. President Akufo-Addo commended stakeholders in the sanitation sector – especially the collaborating ministries, various political parties as well as the Greater Accra Parliamentary Select Committee and the contribution of Zoomlion. “I will do my possible best to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa” he added. While describing the ‘Clean Your Frontage’ initiative as very laudable, the Executive Chairman of Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, pledged the support of all private sector waste management players to the project’s success. He assured further that they will continue offering their support to the Greater Accra Regional Minister in his efforts to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa. He said this initiative will make Ghanaians more responsible for ensuring that their immediate surroundings are always clean. This, he said, will also offer service providers more space to take care of domestic waste collection at public places and for street cleaning. According to Dr. Siaw Agyepong, since the inception of Zoomlion – a subsidiary of JGC – in 2006, it has made tireless efforts to help improve the country’s sanitation. However, he pointed out that after several years of his company’s operations in the sanitation space, negative attitudes of citizens toward the environment and lack of enforcing sanitation bye-laws are two key challenges inhibiting a sustainably clean and healthy environment. “It is therefore very heartwarming that upon assumption of office the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr. Henry Quartey, launched the ‘Accra Must Work Campaign’ and the ‘Clean Accra Project’ by the immediate past Mayor of Accra and his colleagues to make Accra clean.” Zoomlion, he said, is also making relevant contributions to support the region’s minister’s quest to make Accra one of the cleanest capitals in Africa, “as well as the nation Ghana as a whole”. In this regard, he said, Zoomlion has been releasing logistics and equipment to support the ‘Accra Must Work’ campaign to achieve maximum impact, aside from the already deployed logistics for its regular operations. In addition to providing personnel, Zoomlion is providing about 85 compactors and 1,000 tricycles to support the campaign, stated the executive chairman of JGC. “It will interest you to know that the company has come out with a new tricycle model and system of operation that will unionize and assist the informal waste collection sector to contribute to the waste management processes in a more formal and organized manner, so as to improve waste collection in slums and poorly planned areas,” he disclosed. The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, explained that the exercise will train 3,500 youth as task forces under the City Response Team to help polish the Operation Clean Your Frontage agenda. To ensure the effectiveness of the campaign, he hinted that dustbins will be provided from Ayi Mensah down to Ridge Roundabout and other major roads within Accra to ensure that these towns are clean. He used the chance to call on all and sundry to get involved in the campaign by keeping their frontages and surroundings clean. In a solidarity message from the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Mr. Daniel Botwe said it is imperative that the 29 MMDAs in the region stand up to the task of ensuring the cleanliness of their frontages to give the national capital a new facelift that will be befitting of its status. Young Africans have called for more freedom and opportunities to propel the socio-economic growth of the continent as thousands of them took part in the 2021 Youth Connekt Africa summit held in Ghana’s capital, Accra. The annual convening event connects youth from across the continent and beyond with policy influencers, political and industry leaders among others on accelerating youth empowerment efforts in Africa. This is the first time the summit is being held outside of Rwanda, where it first started as the brainchild of President Paul Kagame. Youth Connekt Africa summit which has now grown bigger and has been adopted by the African Union is now considered the largest pan-African youth-oriented program that seeks relevant solutions for youth socio-economic development. Participants at the three-day event engaged in various sessions that focused on Africa beyond aid and post Covid-19 pandemic recovery strategy. They however want more freedom and opportunities as they demand active participation in political and policy decision-making processes across the continent and get them involved in finding solutions to the continent’s problem. One female participant told DW that “Honestly speaking young people are empowered, they just need the space to operate. They just need that opportunity to put up the little and even the more that they have. They just need that space to operate.” Another male participant was also quoted as saying that Africa’s growth led by young people “boils down to mindset change and the willingness of African leaders to have the young ones grow and stop giving contracts to people who are over age and they are not making way for the young ones to take their positions and even grow in it.” Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Bawumia told the delegates that Africa’s youth still struggle to secure jobs, something that requires serious attention. “The youth account for sixty percent of all of Africa’s unemployed. For those that manage to find work, they do not do so in a place that pays a good wage or develops their skills, or provides a measure of job security. No one needs to tell us that mass unemployment in Africa especially among her youth is a ticking time bomb,” Bawumia said. There have been several conversations around empowering young people to lead the innovation agenda of the continent at this summit. The Takoradi Divisional Police Command says it has arrested three suspects for faking a kidnap and demanding a ransom of Five-Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHc5,000) in the region. According to the police, the suapects include; Krah, aged 29; Susana Awortwe, aged 27 and Francis Eshun, aged 27. In a statement sighted by Thinknewsonline.com it said "Reports indicate that the suspect, Joana Krah conspired with the other two suspects; Susan Awortwe and Francis Eshun, to frign her kidnapping on Friday, October 22, 2021, after which a call was placed to her father in demand for the ransom" The statement further explained that when Joana became aware that her adopted father had reported to the Police and an extensive search had commenced to find her, she turned up to confess that it was a joke.
