Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration through its Twitter account is asking the over 1000 stranded Ghanaians in Ukraine to seek shelter in either their homes or places offered by the Ukrainian government amid the ongoing conflict. According to the Ministry, the government of Ghana is gravely concerned about their safety and security. In a tweet sighted by Thinknewsonline.com, it said "The Government of Ghana is gravely concerned about the security and safety of our over 1000 students and other Ghanaians in Ukraine and has asked them to shelter in place in their homes or in government places of shelter" The tweet further added that the government is engaging authorities, relevant diplomatic missions and honorary consul on further measures. "As we engage the authorities, our relevant diplomatic missions and our honorary consul on further measures" The tweet has received very backlash as some scores of twitter users are calling the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Minister as useless. US President Joe Biden condemned Russia's "unprovoked and unjustified attack by Russian military forces" in a statement Wednesday evening following explosions in Ukraine. The US and allies are planning on Thursday to trigger the "full scale" of the sanctions that have been discussed over the last several weeks in response to the attack, according to a senior Biden administration official. "President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering," Biden said. "Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way. The world will hold Russia accountable." The White House statement came in response to explosions across Ukraine, including in the capital of Kyiv. Shortly before the explosions began, Russian President Vladmir Putin announced a "special military operation" and called for Ukraine's "demilitarization" in televised remarks. An adviser for the interior minister of Ukraine, Anton Gerashchenko, said Russia's "invasion has begun" with "missile strikes on Kyiv," in an official WhatsApp group with journalists. In an address Thursday morning in Ukraine, Zelensky said he was introducing martial law across the country and urged Ukrainians to remain calm. "No panic. We are strong. We are ready for everything," he said. "We will win over everybody because we are Ukraine." Biden said that he planned to speak to his G-7 counterparts and would give a speech to the American people on Thursday. . He said he intended to announce "further consequences" that the US and its allies planned to impose on Russia over "this needless act of aggression against Ukraine and global peace and security." "We will also coordinate with our NATO Allies to ensure a strong, united response that deters any aggression against the Alliance," Biden said. While the administration official declined to lay out specifics, the US has planned to target Russia's two largest banks, as well as other financial firms, and has prepared to deploy export controls to cut off Russian access to critical Western technology for entire Russian economic sectors. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield spoke for a second time as the UN meeting was nearing an end, stating Putin had "delivered a message of war" while the Security Council was meeting. "At the exact time as we are gathered in the Council seeking peace, Putin delivered a message of war in total disdain for the responsibility of this council," Thomas-Greenfield said. Let history be a lesson to not be repeated.’ The 45-year-old former heavyweight champion also joined his older brother Vitali Klitschko, who is Mayor of Kyiv, in a video message calling for the world to stand with Ukraine. With Wladimir beside him, Mayor Vitali said: ‘I’m calling to all international partners to observe this tragedy that is happening nowadays in Ukraine and this senseless war which is not going to have any winners or losers. The strikes come after Ukraine’s border force confirmed a checkpoint between the Kyiv region and Belarus had been overrun by Russian forces. Boris Johnson has announced that the UK will send a “further package of military support to Ukraine” after Russia’s invasion. Speaking ahead of Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday he confirmed this will “include lethal aid” after Putin sent troops into the Donbas region earlier this week. "In light of the increasingly threatening behaviour from Russia, and in line with our previous support, the UK will shortly be providing a further package of military support to Ukraine," Johnson told MPs. "This will include lethal aid in the form of defensive weapons and non-lethal aid." The Prime Minister also said "even more" sanctions against Russia are coming when challenged to "unleash a full package" of measures by Labour leader Keir Starmer. Starmer insisted that it was now time to impose more sanctions, including a ban on trading in Russian sovereign debt and excluding Russia from financial mechanisms like the Switch payment system, because there had "already been an invasion". “There is clearly concern across the House that his strategy, I accept unintentionally, could send the wrong message,” he said. Johnson said there is still hope that Putin will "see sense" and that de-escalation is still possible. "But we are ready very rapidly to escalate our sanctions as I have set out," he added. Russia’s ground forces on Thursday crossed into Ukraine from several directions, Ukraine’s border guard service said, hours after President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a major offensive. Russia has launched an all-out invasion of Ukraine by land, air and sea, the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe since World War II and confirmation of the worst fears of the West. Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah has confirmed the shooting incident that occurred in court on Wednesday, February 23. A statement issued by Justice Cynthia Pamela A. Addo, Judicial Secretary on behalf of the Chief Justice said this is the first time such an incident has occurred hence has caused fear and panic. The statement indicated that investigations are underway into the incident. “This is the first time such an incident has occurred within the courts thus likely to cause fear and panic. However, the general public is informed that thorough investigations are underway while security measures are being put in place to avoid recurrence,” the statement said. A gunshot was accidentally fired in an Accra High Court on Wednesday, February 23. The situation brought proceedings at the Criminal Court 5 to an abrupt end. The shooting occurred from the weapon of a prison warden who was guarding a suspect, according to reports. The officer was badly injured and had been rushed to the court clinic for medical attention. Three persons have met their untimely death in their desperate attempt to outrun officials from the Forestry Commission after they were caught carting a truckload of woods from Sekyere Krobo in the Wassa East District of the Western Region on Wednesday, February 23. Ten others who were with the deceased also suffered various degrees of injury. Information available to Connect FM suggests that the forest around Sekyere Krobo has become a target for illegal chainsaw operators, destroying it with careless abandon. Due to the worrisome activities of the illegal chainsaw operators, the Forestry Commission has set up a task force that patrols the area in an effort to stop the illegality. Unfortunately, the illegal chainsaw operators have studied the patrol time and in their bid to outsmart the officers will normally do the loading and carting of the woods in the thick of the night, sometimes 3:00 am. On Wednesday, February 23, a group of young men who were carting a truckload of woods at about 3:00 am from Sekyere Krobo somehow received an alert that a patrol team is on to them. “So the driver decided to outrun the patrol team. So he was driving on top speed. But when we got to Mpintenso, there was this big pothole on the road. The driver could not dodge it and so we dumped hard into it. The truck overturned and spilled all of us together with the woods. We were 13 sitting on the pack of woods in the bucket. The packed woods fell on us. We cried for help and some residents came to our rescue. Unfortunately, Ben [Gasie], Yaw [Drodro], and [Yaw] Lapo could not make it,” one of the survivors narrated. The deceased are between 18 and 28 years.
