The Bolgatanga Central MP, Isaac Adongo, has rubbished arguments suggesting that the e-levy is the cure to Ghana’s economic challenges. Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Adongo said, “it is greed that has brought us here.” The MP’s comments came after President Akufo-Addo said passing the e-levy would be in the interest of the public. Mr. Adongo said the President has lost the moral right to make such a call because “he has not demonstrated commitment to protecting the public purse.” “How can e-levy stop the President from flying in chartered jets and wasting public funds… How does the e-levy stop Ken Ofori-Atta from using Databank to borrow for the state and collect fees on account of that?” Mr. Adongo feels a lack of prudence from the government remains Ghana’s main challenge. “If you have these people with this level of appetite for expenditure, how can GHS6.9 billion solve our problems?” “Ken must withdraw his company for us to have the confidence that we are all in the boat together but we cannot be tightening our belt and they loosing their belt,” he added. Mr. Adongo further said the government needed to be honest about the state of the economy. “The economy is already gone. If they want us to have a solution, there has to be a national consensus, and they must begin to understand that Ghana belongs to all of us and that they are at their wit’s end,” he said. About the e-levy The E-levy is a new tax measure introduced by the government in the 2022 Budget on basic transactions related to digital payments and electronic platform transactions. A charge of 1.75% will apply to electronic transactions that are more than GH¢100 on a daily basis. The approval of the e-levy by Parliament has been fraught with many challenges, with the minority kicking against it. The Appiatse Support Fund Committe has on Wednesday, 2nd March, 2022 received donations from the National Lottery Authority, (NLA), The West African Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Pertrolum (WAIMM) and Women In Mining. The Director of Operations for National Lottery Authority, Mr. George Gyamfi-Osew during their presentation, gave a cash amount of 100,000 Ghana cedis as their contribution towards the rebuilding of the Appiatse Community. He disclosed that aside their main mandate which is to deposit enough money into the Consolidated fund for National development they also have the mandate to raise revenue to help the less privileged and the destitute in society. "What has happened in Appiatse goes beyond less privileged or destitute in society, it looks like a war when there has been no war so we are happy to support such a good cause coming from our Good Cause Foundation" He opined that as an organisation that believes in developing and supporting people, a tragedy such as this, demands that they also step in to contribute the little they can to help. Mr. Gyamfi-Osew called on other institutions to join in with their contributions which will equip the Support Fund with "abundant funds" and also complement government's efforts to rebuild the community. As their contribution towards the reconstruction of the Appiatse community, the West African Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Pertrolum (WAIMM) presented a cheque of 90,000 Ghana Cedis to the Appiatse Support Fund Committee. The President of the Institute, Prof. Daniel Mireku-Gyimah who was accompanied by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Lawrence Omari- Mensah took the chance to herald their role in society in conjunction with the mining act. He said WAIMM will support the people of Appiatse and provide enough to bring smiles to the faces of the people even as they go through the long and painful journey of recovery. Mr. Mensah promised, "We are willing to provide every service we can both knowledge transfer and skill development while extending a token of friendship to the community" Women In Mining Ghana in their presentation made a donation worth 25,000 Ghana Cedis with 15,000 as relief items and 10,000 Ghana Cedis cheque. A book detailing the life journey of an accomplished woman to encourage and inspire people has been launched in Accra. The 203-book, titled Endurance & Grace Personified, by Madam Grace Amenyogbeli recounts her life experiences, trying moments, and how she was able to overcome those challenges. According to the author, Madam Amenyogbeli, who is an experienced administrator and had worked with both local and international organisations, the book recalls how she enjoyed her early years of marriage before problems started setting in. "Indeed, everybody has a life's story and so I decided to publish mine primarily to encourage somebody," she said. Book Launch Madam Amenyogbeli made the observation during the lunch of her maiden book—Endurance & Grace Personified—on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. She explained that the book has been carefully written to trumpet gratitude packaged with her soul to all those who contributed during her critical moments in her life's journey some of whom she christened "strategic helpers." "My dear ones, everybody needs a shoulder to lean on,” she intimated. Rationale "I gathered the courage to write such a detailed account of my life for public consumption because I considered it a sacrifice for humanity to extract some salient lessons which might guide some lives. …I believe the journey of life is not only shaped by one's own experiences, but those of others as well. Much as it is difficult, I thought it would be of no value either if I closed up. However, I was careful not to impose any on the reader. I respected the fact that people are different, with different aspirations and different perspective on issues," the author further said. With different perspectives, she noted that one might describe a half-filled cup with substance as half empty, while another will see it as half-full, leaving readers to construct their own lessons. Madam Amenyogbeli was hopeful that readers of her book will have something useful from her memoir to enrich their lives. That notwithstanding, she bemoaned her inability to express what she termed the "state of my being" anytime she found herself in distress. "I always encourage myself in the Lord like David did by singing a particular song from the deepest part of my soul and immediately experience some relief. I attempted to capture it somehow on page 58, the last paragraph though," she revealed. The author of Endurance & Grace Personified underscored the need for every woman to be strong and forge ahead with their heads lifted up in the midst of trouble. According to her, she has resolved to dedicate the proceeds from sale of the book to her foundation—Sena Aku Memorial Foundation, which she named after her daughter. The Chairman of the Foundation, Mr. Benjamin Anim, disclosed that the foundation was formed in 2012 in memory of Sena Anku to help educate and offer assistance to young professional women in the area of cancer, with particular emphasis on breast cancer. Sena was an accomplished International Executive MBA holder in Banking and Finance with Paris Graduate School of Management, Credit and Risk Management at Stanbic Bank Training School and indeed a hallmark of an achiever. However, she succumbed to cancer at age 28 after several attempts at treatment. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forestry Commission, John Allotey is calling on Ghanaians and foreigners nationals living in the country to partake in the upcoming tree planting exercise dubbed '2022 Green Ghana Day'. According to Mr. Allotey, planting trees will not only make the country greener but also have a positive impact on the environment. In an exclusive interview with Thinknewsonline.com in Accra, he said "2022, we expect Ghanaians to come out massively. You know Ghanaians love to support good things. This project is something that is progressing and we are aware of the impact on our environment on our livelihood. This has no political colouration" The CEO described the 2021 edition as great adding that the exercise drew people from all walks of life to partake in it. "It was not great because of the Forestry Commission but because, we had people from all walks of life getting involved right from the Presidency to the lowest person so it is not the Forestry Commission but the whole country getting together to plant trees and that was great" "It is also not about the number of trees were planted but rather different people were involved; the school children, elderly and all planted and that is the message, we want to send across" Mr. Allotey told Thinknewsonline.com that although his outfit had a successful tree planting in 2021, it was hit with some challenges. "The time of launching the program to the planting time was like two and half months so you realised that some of the needlings were not developed. This is time, we have enough time to prepare the seedlings" "It had to do with the planting that was done in the islands and median of the roads. They were not doing too well because we had not done the institutional arrangements to do with the parks and gardens" Mr. Allotey revealed that his outfit has managed to engage the services of parks and gardens extensively adding that the firm will be managing the growth of the trees on the median of the roads. The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has launched the Digitalized National Assay Laboratory in Accra. According to the Vice President, the Digitalized National Assay Laboratory which ties in with Government’s agenda is aimed at streamlining governance by cutting down on the human interface, and making processes digital and more efficient. Speaking at the launch, the Vice President said "In 2017, President Akufo-Addo, directed that Government identifies a way to independently verify gold exports in order to ensure that the country obtains revenue due it from its precious mineral resources. As a result, under the leadership of Kiston Akomeng Kissi, the Board Chairman of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company Limited (PMMC) and driven by the late Hon. Kwadjo Opare-Hammond (may his soul rest in peace), the then Managing Director of PMMC, stakeholder engagements begun towards the implementation of this directive" The Vice ollowing several engagements with the Ghana Chamber of Mines and the Association of Gold Exporters, now Chamber of Bullion Traders, Ghana, modalities for the smooth take-off of the National Assay Program were put in place. "I have, therefore, followed with keen interest the consistent efforts to improve the program to maximize its efficiency. I am informed that as part of measures to optimize revenue and ultimately maximize the benefits from our natural resources, the silver identified in the gold d’ore which is exported shall soon be quantified and the appropriate tax levied on and collected from same. Again, in 2021, under the leadership of Hon. Kissi, with support from the Sector Minister, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor and driven by the current Managing Director, Nana Akwasi Awuah, the National Assay Program was digitalized" he noted. The Veep mentioned that Digitization has now made it possible to generate assay certificates which have unique security features. These unique features, he stated, will make the certificates difficult to forge by gold scammers to facilitate their dubious elaborate schemes. "Digitization has also now made it possible to monitor in real time, gold exports passing through the National Assay Laboratory. Additionally, it has improved collation of timely data on gold export figures and revenues in order to aid national economic planning" "As are aware, Government is already transforming the governance of various sectors of Ghana’s economy through digitization. Government’s digitization drive is a key component of the overall economic strategy because the Fourth Industrial Revolution is upon us and Ghana must take advantage of it if we are not to be left behind. There is a growing body of empirical evidence that illustrates the capacity of digital technology to create jobs, significantly boost productivity, increase income and support wealth creation" "The digitalization drive of Government is spreading to cover many sectors of the national economy. One area where the Government has made significant inroads has been using digitalization to address the issue of efficient public service delivery and checking corruption" Dr. Bawumia mentioned that Government’s approach to improving the delivery of public services is to minimize human contact as much as possible. He stressed that government has embarked on an aggressive digitalization of the processes of service delivery across many public institutions. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am happy to indicate that the launch of the Digitalized National Assay Laboratory today is a major addition to the Government’s portfolio of digital initiatives already implemented. Digitalization of the Passport Office: Following digitization, passport applications are now online and there is no need for middlemen or for the payment of bribes to obtain a passport. The average turnaround time for the acquisition of passports has been significantly reduced and there is even now an additional option of delivery service" "Digitalization of the Ports: Most of the bottlenecks that caused delays, corruption, inefficiencies, frustration and loss of revenue to Government are being eliminated as a result of digitalization at our national ports. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA): With the digitalization of the driver licenses in 2019, the Authority experienced an increase in service delivery by 109% in 2020. As at August 2021, an additional 16% improvement in performance has been achieved" Speaking on motor insurance database, the Vice President told the gathering that the National Insurance Commission has, through the Motor Insurance Database, introduced a digitalized system to curb the menace of vehicles with fake motor insurance stickers plying our roads and endangering lives and property. On Registrar-General’s Department, he hinted that by digitalization, processes at the Department have currently been made simple, transparent, and efficient. "Births and Deaths Registry Digitalization: Processing of the registration of births and deaths have improved significantly. All SSNIT offices across Ghana have been networked and processes have been digitalized, improving its pension administration framework. Scholarship Secretariat Applications;The launch of the online portal is in line with Government’s vision to improve the efficiency of scholarship administration in the country. Dr. Bawumia indicated that the "Ghana.Gov” Platform, with its launch as a one-stop shop for easy access to government services, all government institutions are expected to be on the Ghana.Gov platform by the end of the year. He mentioned that the mobile Ghana.Gov App is also now available on Google Playstore and on Apple App Store. On integration of databases, he mentioned that the key to building a data-based economy is not only in generating data but more importantly the different sets of data must be integrated, synchronized and efficiently utilized. The Vice reminded the gathering that Ghana has the opportunity to integrate the databases that have been generated from the ongoing digitalization processes. "Government under the leadership of H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recognizes that our progress as a nation in the modern world is inextricably linked to digitalization and will therefore continue its adoption for enhanced service delivery. It is a critical path for our nation to remain competitive in the world of today and tomorrow. He pledged government's support to public or private institutions, which intends implementing digital initiatives for efficiency. On his part the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor said "We began with the Lands Commission, by fusing the different searches conducted by the various Divisions of the Commission into one composite search, and made it possible to conduct an online search, from the comfort of your home. Then in November, 2021, the Minerals Commission followed, with the abolition of paper-based applications, and moved all applications for mineral rights online. And early this year, we launched the Digitalised Property Mark Registration and Renewal Process, and the Ghana Electronic Wood Tracking System of the Forestry Commission; two digital platforms that allow loggers to register and renew their Property Marks online, and allows us to track wood from harvesting to its final disposal" The Minister explained that the Digitalised Assay Laboratory is part of the National Assay Programme his Ministry rolled out in 2017, to effectively monitor gold exports from both large and small scale mining. "We are doing all these, as part of measures to make the lands and natural resources sector of our country fit for purpose, for the benefit of Ghanaians. Article 257(6) of our national Constitution, vests all minerals in their natural state in the President of the Republic, “on behalf of, and in trust for the people of Ghana.” The exploitation and utilisation of our mineral resources must, therefore, inure to the benefit of the people of Ghana, the true owners of these minerals" "It is for this reason that, since 2017, we begun putting in place the building blocks to retain, here in Ghana, the full value of our natural resources. We have, therefore, committed to move away from export of raw materials, to value addition and industrialisation, for a prosperous economy. In 2018, we begun, under a Public – Private Partnership, the construction of a four hundred kilogramme (400kg) capacity gold refinery, which is now fully completed, and ready to start refining our gold. This refinery is timely, as the Bank of Ghana commences the purchase of gold domestically to shore up its reserves, and contribute to the retention of the value of our mineral resources" He revealed that working with the Ministry of Finance and other stakeholders, his Ministry has, also, initiated the processes of securing a London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Certification, to enable us easily export and trade our refined gold on the international market. "A joint Committee of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Finance, is working around the clock to ensure that we secure this certification in record time. To ramp up our efforts at promoting small scale mining, we have reduced the withholding tax rate for the sale of unprocessed gold by small scale miners from three percent (3%) to one point five percent (1.5%)" "Mr. Vice President, Ladies and Gentlemen, our quest to retain the full value of our mineral resources is not only limited to gold. The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), established by Act 976 of 2018, is working to develop an integrated aluminium industry in our country, from bauxite mining to aluminium production. Last year, the Corporation launched a Four Project Agenda, to expand the existing bauxite mine in Awaso, develop a new mine at Nyinahini-Mpassaso with a refinery, develop two new mines at Kyebi and Nyinahini, together with a refinery, and modernise and expand the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) to process alumina from the refineries" He disclosed that a strategic partner has already been engaged for the development of the Nyinahini mine with a refinery, and we are developing a Masterplan, which, when approved by Cabinet, will enable us position VALCO to make it ready to process alumina refined here in Ghana. Taking his turn, the Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Nana Akwasi Awuah said "Your Excellency, another unique feature of the digitalized assay laboratory is that, it now makes it possible to obtain in real time, data on gold exports" This, he explained, will aid in effective national economic planning. He stressed that since the commencement of the National Assay Program till date, PMMC has been able to assay a total Weighton gold of about 18million ounces at an estimated total value of USD$27billion. Nana Awuah added that, out of the USD$27billion, the ASM sector accounted for 6.6million ounces valued at USD$9.2billion representing about 40%, while the large scare sector accounted for 11.3million ounces at USD$17.9billion. President Akufo-Addo has revealed that Ghana's Forest Sector generated almost One Billion Ghana Cedis (GHc1,000,000,000.00) from export last year. According to President Akufo-Addo, Ghana's forest is one of the most important natural resources adding that it provides sources of livelihood for many as well as generate income. Speaking at the 2022 edition of Green Ghana Day at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), President Akufo-Addo said "Forest is one of the most important natural resources of our country, as it provides sources of livelihood for many and generates income for the nation. The forest sector generated almost One Billion Ghana Cedis (GHS1,000,000,000.00) from the export last year" The President also hinted that forests are very important to the fight against climate likewise and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. "With just eight years to achieve the Goals we set for ourselves in the Sustainable Development Goals, climate change continues to derail our efforts, by impacting the fundamentals required to the achieve the Goals,” the President observed. He bemoaned the wanton depletion of the world’s forests, especially in Africa, where we continue to experience an increase in net forest loss. The President noted that a greener future is necessary for the survival of our planet, and in accord with the duty of every citizen under article 41(k) of the Constitution, to protect and safeguard the environment. President Akufo-Addo said the 2022 edition of Green Ghana Day targets the planting of some twenty million (20,000,000) trees across the country. He called on all Ghanaians and residents of Ghana, to go out on June 10 to plant, encourage others to do same and commit to ensure that the trees planted reach maturity. The President expressed his hope that people will contribute in diverse ways to ensure that the exercise does not burden the public purse. The President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made the declarations, under the theme “Mobilising for a Greener Future.” On his part, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP, said "The country has lost over eight million hectares (8,000,000 ha) of forest since 1900, but managed to plant only one hundred and fifty-seven thousand three hundred hectares (157,300 ha) between 1963 and 2016" He said as a result of Government’s aggressive afforestation programme, four hundred and seventy-seven thousand, four hundred and eighty-five point five hectares (477, 485.5 ha) of forest was cultivated between 2017 and the third quarter of 2021. “Significant though this may be, it is not enough, compared to the over eight million hectares (8,000,000 ha) lost over the years,” the Minister said. He, therefore, called on people of all walks of life, to come together to build a Green Ghana. Mr. Jinapor, called for the support of all and sundry, to contribute to the programme, as the twenty million trees target, is very ambitious and will require a lot of resources. He added that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, intends to pilot the concept of carbon trading with Corporate Ghana, during this year’s edition of Green Ghana. The Green Ghana Day was instituted last year by Government, under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as part of an aggressive afforestation and reforestation agenda, to restore the lost forest cover of the country. The maiden edition of the Green Ghana Day was held on June 11, 2021, where the President led the entire nation to plant over seven million trees, exceeding the target of five million trees. A Russian attack on a television tower in Kyiv killed five and injured others, officials said. The Ukraine Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) said television channels would be down for a while after an explosion rocked the communications tower in the centre of the capital. Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the ministry, posted footage of the attack on social media. Pictures showed bodies at the site of the blast. The TV tower was shown still standing though parts of the metal structure appeared to have been torn off and blown several metres. Local reporter Illia Ponomarenko said the the city authorities had promised to fix the damage as soon as possible. The MIA said no staff were hurt in the attack. Mr Gerashchenko said the explosion hit a memorial site for the Babin Yar mass shootings, a Nazi massacre which killed more than 30,000 Jewish people over two days in 1941. News coming indicated that armed robbers have made away with the Toyota Landcruiser V8 being driven by the NDC Vice Chairman Chief Sofo Azorka. According to sources close to him, the vehicle with registration number GT 5533-17 was driven away at his private residence at Gbanyamni, in the Tamale Metropolis in the early hours of Tuesday by the robbers in what appears to be a co-coordinated and stage managed attack. The incident has been reported to the Police but Residents of Tamale have launched a manhunt for the robbers. Meanwhile, the family has issued a statement to set the records straight. The Freelance Journalist was arrested last week over an alleged filming of a National Security Officer and a court proceedings. The cause of his re-arrest is not known but deep throat sources say it is linked with his investigative activities. Deputy Energy Minister, Hon. Andrew Egyapa Mercer, ha stated that it is important for Ghana to consider several important factors in the global conversation about energy transition, lest the country risk sitting on stranded oil assets that are key to our development agenda. He made this call when he addressed a town hall engagement in Takoradi as part of the national conversation currently under way on the subject. Hon. Mercer, who is also the MP for Sekondi, stated that whilst Africa remains the lowest emitter of carbon globally, the effects of stringent and rigid transition policies towards clean energy will affect our oil and gas industries and ultimately our economies in several important, adverse ways. “The Ghanaian economy is no exception. The objectives of a National Energy Transition Plan should however take into consideration the peculiar circumstances of Ghana’s abundant natural resources and her development needs as articulated by President Akufo-Addo in Glasgow, Scotland during the COP26 conference earlier this year’, the Deputy Minister asserted. Whilst acknowledging the importance and effects of climate change, the Deputy Minister continued “it would be wholly unfair for the world to demand that Africa abandons the exploitation of our resources needed to finance her development and help us to cope better with the threat of climate change, at a time when many countries on the continent have just discovered them.” He added that Ghana’s transition plan should therefore seek to position the oil and gas industry to play a more significant role in the development of the country. This, he said, can be done through increased production of crude oil to generate more revenue and increased value addition to the economy through power generation and petrochemical industrialization, for instance. On Tuesday 22nd February 2022, the Vice President, H.E Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, launched the National Energy Transition Forum in Accra to set the ball rolling on a national conversation on energy transition. So far, the National Energy Transition Team has been to the Volta Regional capital Ho, and further engagements are planned for all the country’s regional capital, with the next event taking place at Kumasi’s Golden Tulip Hotel tomorrow 1st March 2022. Various dignitaries present at the Takoradi event included Awulae Angama Tu Agyan II, Omanhene of Dwira, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, Western Regional Minister and MP for Takoradi and Hon.
