The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor (MP) says the management of the lands and natural resources of the country will continue to be premised on high standards of transparency, integrity and candour. In line with this, the Minister urged players and captains of the industry to help government safeguard the natural resources for the benefit of the people, adding that the resources continues to be the property of the Ghanaian People and therefore "We have nothing to hide as a government" He maintained. The Minister said this when he appeared before the floor of Parliament to respond to some questions with regards to his Sector on Thursday, 3rd March 2022. The Hon. Minister in his responses touched on key areas such as the findings and recommendations of the Appiatse disaster, the Ministry’s efforts in ensuring the operationalisation of the community mining scheme, seedlings procured by the Ministry and planted in support of restoring Ghana's forest cover, among others. Responding to the findings of the Appiatse disaster, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor provided to the house 6 fundamental infractions of the Minerals and Mining regulations, 2012 (LI 2177) by the company at the center of the incident, Maxam company Limited. He said the most fundamental of the recommendations made is a 5 member committee set up by the Ministry to review the entire health and safety regime of the mining sector of the country. He also said in pursuant to the section 100(1) Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 Act 703 has since established a Ministeral Committe of Enquiry under the Chairmanship of Richard Professor Amankwah, Vice Chancellor of UMat and their report is to be submitted in the coming weeks. Speaking on the issue of Community Mining Scheme which was rolled out in 2019 as a substitute for illegal Small Scale Mining, Hon. Jinapor said 20 Community Mining Schemes have been commissioned in 14 Mining districts across the country as of the year 2020. In 2021, the Minister disclosed that the Ministry revamped the Community Mining Scheme with all legal and policy frameworks reformed and clarified to provide a clear pathway for responsible and sustainable small scale mining. He also declared that the Ministry through the Minerals Commission is investing in a mercury-free ore processing equipment known as "the Gold Katcha" adding that the Ministry has already procured one hundred (100) of these equipment which are being given out for Community Mining Scheme across the country. On the Forestry sector, the Minister said resalising the unsustainable nature of the industry, coupled with the need to preserve the forest cover, the Ministry imposed a ban on the harvesting and exporting of Rosewood in February 2017. He added that from January 2017 to January 2021, a total of 15 people have been arrested and prosecuted for engaging in illegal harvesting of Rosewood, detailing that 8 of this number were arrested in Lawra, 2 in Navrongo, 2 in Bole and Buipe, 2 in Nkwanta and Jasikan and 1 in Tamale who were all prosecuted, convicted with various punishments meted out on them. Hon. Jinapor was of the view that with forest reserves being one of the most vital resource contribuitung to the national economy and to the fight against climate change, the President Akufo-Addo led government has committed to embark on an aggressive afforestation programme to restore the nation's lost forest cover. " We are therefore committed to plant at least 20 million trees this year which will include planting on degraded forest lands" He called on the house to also join hands and help save the forest cover of the country. Responding to the questions posed by the minority leader on delays of land compensations, particularly on the bureaucratic nature of the Lands Commission, the Minister stressed that the biggest issue regarding land, has been the issue of rightful claimant to compensations. Government he said is determined to pay these compensations but rival claims makes it difficult and that is the major challenge. "However, we will adopt all methods to ensure that these compensations are paid". He said. The Minister also spoke about land reforms carried out at the Lands Commission saying that the current reforms such as the New Land Act, Act 1036, seeks to also resolve the matter of land related compensations among others. The Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Maria Elisa De Luna has affirmed the support of her office to facilitate partnership between the Coastal Development Authority and Brazilian investors in the Authority’s efforts to build four beach stadia in the four coastal regions namely Greater Accra, Central, Western and Western North Regions. The envoy gave the assurance when the Chief Executive Officer of CODA, Lawyer Jerry Ahmed Shaib called on her at her office in Accra on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. The visit by the CEO forms part of the Authority’s public-private-partnership drive aimed at mobilising investments to provide modern beach sports infrastructure, facilities and services at Ghana’s beaches. The dialogue also touched on the CODA Clean Beach Campaign, cassava production, and some planned events by the Embassy. “We are ready to learn from you especially in the areas of beach soccer and cassava production methods. We believe your support in terms of investments and knowledge-sharing can positively impact our clean beach campaign and transform the economic potential of our coastal communities through tourism and beach sports" “We intend to build 4 beach soccer stadia and we are seeking support in that direction; resources and know-how”, the CEO stated. Her Excellency De Luna expressed her excitement about the CEO’s visit and assured him of the cooperation and support of her office, adding that she is always delighted when meetings of such nature yield positive results. Roman Abramovich has put Chelsea up for sale. The Russian billionaire released a statement on the club’s official website saying that the decision was taken with the best interests of the club at heart. The statement also added that he “would not ask for any loans to be repaid” and proceeds will go to the victims of the war in Ukraine. 'Abramovich loves the club' - Tuchel's recent tribute to outgoing Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has released a statement saying he has taken the decision to sell Chelsea FC. The Russian billionaire ushered in a new era for Chelsea and the Premier League when he bought the club in 2003. But Abramovich’s ownership has come under scrutiny following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The 55-year-old handed the “stewardship” of Chelsea to the club’s charitably foundation trustees last week. “I would like to address the speculation in the media over the past few days in relation to my ownership of Chelsea FC,” began the statement. “As I have stated before, I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the Club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the Club, the fans, the employees, as well as the Club’s sponsors and partners. The statement also added that Abramovich would not ask for any loans to be repaid – in effect writing off £1.5 billion in debt – and that net proceeds of any sale would be donated to a charitable foundation that would be used to benefit “all victims of the war in Ukraine”. “The sale of the Club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process. I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and Club. The slump has wiped out $572 billion from the market value of 23 stocks, including Gazprom PJSC, Sberbank of Russia PJSC and Rosneft PJSC, according to Bloomberg calculations. Wednesday’s continuing selloff triggered a wave of volatility halts. Within the first four hours of trading, dealing was briefly paused at least 15 times for lender Sberbank, state-run gas giant Gazprom and retailer Magnit PJSC. Trading in VTB Bank PJSC was suspended last week following sanctions. The Dow Jones Russia GDR gauge, which tracks 11 of the largest Russian companies listed in London, fell as much as 81% Wednesday, taking a decline since Feb. 16 to 98%. Depositary receipts for Sberbank have slumped 99% this week, while Gazprom fell 98% and steel producer Severstal PJSC lost almost 100%. Rosneft Oil Co. tumbled 79% and Lukoil PJSC sank 99%. Europe is carving up Sberbank’s business in the region after sanctions sparked by President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine prompted a run on its local deposits. eanwhile, European energy companies are distancing themselves from Gazprom, with Shell Plc and Italy’s Eni SpA ending joint ventures. The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) with assistance of the Police has arrested some peddlers of unregistered medicines known as 'Nkoyo' and 'Nnompe Nnompe Tablets'. According to the FDA, the products which are not registered by the FDA are sold as herbal preparations and claim to treat pain and inflammatory diseases. In a statement signed its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Delese Darko, it said "Laboratory analysis has shown that each container has a steroid tablet and an inflammatory tablet. These unregistered drugs contain active ingredients classified as prescription only medicines in unknown qualities. These products may also contain other unknown substance" The FDA mentioned that the continuous use of these products without proper prescription and guidance can lead to serious adverse health effects. The Minister of Energy Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh inaugurated the newly constituted board of TOR yesterday at the refinery's premises. He tasked them to work as a team and cooperate with each other and management to be proactive and innovative in seeking strategic partnerships to ensure TOR’s viability. He stressed that, the new board should be tactical enough to ensure that there is a conducive working environment to improve upon the relationship between the board and management as well as unions. “It is in our collective interest as a nation for TOR to be fully operational especially at this time and more especially when we have our own discovery” he reiterated. In his response, Mr. David Kwame Tandoh Adomako chairman of the board agreed to all Dr. Prempeh said and assured him of their full commitment to manage the facility just as any private individual will manage his personal business and leave TOR better than they met it. Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is leading a delegation of senior officials from Ghana’s energy sector to attend EXPO 2020 underway in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Dubbed by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, lead organisers of Ghana’s participation in the EXPO as the ‘Energy Month’, March will be used to position Ghana’s energy sector favourably in the minds of investors and decision makers. The Ministry and its sector agencies at the EXPO will showcase Ghana’s energy potential in the upstream, downstream and renewable energy sectors with strong emphasis on the 2030 Petroleum Hub agenda, one of the important visions of His Excellency the President among other key areas. As part of a series of planned engagements to attract investor partners into Ghana’s energy sector, the Ministry will host an investment forum on Saturday 5th March, 2022 where sector agencies will use the opportunity to pitch for investment into their various sectors. The forum will be attended by Ghana’s Ambassador to the UAE, Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, the CEO of the GIPC and leading figures of the investor community in the UAE. There will also be one-on-one sessions between Ghana’s energy sector CEOs and prospective investors. The Ministry will also participate actively in the ‘Ghana Day’ on 8th March, 2022 where the President of the Republic, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to address a business forum organized by the GIPC in close partnership with the Ministry of Energy. The President is also expected to highlight strongly, the numerous opportunities in the energy sector as well as other areas of the economy. All these events are strategically geared towards making Ghana attractive to the investor community at the EXPO. Beyond these events, the Ministry has scheduled rotationally, the use of the Ghana pavilion by the sector agencies. “My sector agencies will provide deeper insights into the operations of their sectors. They will indeed demonstrate the limitless opportunities in the generation, transmission and distribution value chain of the power sector” Dr. Prempeh said at a strategic meeting. He continued “ They will also demonstrate Ghana’s hydrocarbon potential evident in acreages for exploration, farm-in opportunities as well as the rapid expansion of our gas market, among other important areas of the petroleum industry” On the theme “connecting minds, creating the future”, EXPO 2020 which started on 1st October, 2021 and ends on 31st March, 2022 is the first to be held in the Arab world, gathering about 200 country participants.
