At least five persons have been confirmed dead in a fatal accident on the Bunso stretch of the Accra to Kumasi Highway in Eastern Region. Seven others who sustained injuries have been admitted at the hospital. The accident occurred Monday April 4 at about 3:55am when the suspect driver now deceased was in charge of Toyota Hiace mini bus with Registration number AK 1145-21 with 13 persons onboard traveling from Kumasi towards Accra . Reports indicate that on reaching a section of the road after Akyem Asiakwa junction near Bunso, the driver veered off his lane and crashed the offside rear portion of DAF lowbird articulated truck with registration number GT 3799-16. Driver Abonomovi Promise, 40, with drivers mate loaded with water pumping machines were traveling from Tema towards Kumasi with three escort vehicles, two in front, and one behind. The impact forced the Toyota mini bus to crash at the roadside killing five persons including the driver instantly. Seven male occupants aboard the Toyota Hiace mini bus sustained injuries and were rushed to Hawa Memorial Savior hospital and admitted. The Public Rations Officer (PRO) of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh told Starr News Police Personnel quickly rushed to the scene to extricate the victims to the hospital and kept the dead bodies at Kibi government hospital morgue for identification, preservation and autopsy . An Accra Court has finally ruled that Former Black Stars Player, Odartey Lamptey can take possession of his East Legon mansion from his ex wife. According to the court, the Former Footballer can take possession of the property from April 5, 2022. It is emerging that Mr. Lamptey has been renting since 2014 after the wife sued to claim the house following their divorce. Odartey confirmed that he will be officially moving back to the house on April 5 despite the refusal of his ex wife to vacate the place after the ruling. Following the divorce, Lamptey parted away with his five bedroom house at Dome plus a sum of 400,000 cedis as alimony to the ex wife but Ms Gloria Lamptey insisted she wanted the East Legon House instead. The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor says the President Akufo-Addo led government is committed to creating a conducive environment for the mining sector to thrive. The Minister said this when the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E Ms. Kathleen Csaba paid her second official visit to him on Monday 4th April 2022 in Accra. Ghana's Mining sector, the Minister said "is one that is very robust and indeed we are happy to work together to create that conducive environment for the mining sector to flourish with a strong Canadian involvement ." Hon. Jinapor pointed out that the over-aching goal of the President Akufo-Addo led government is to make Ghana the Mining Hub of Africa, where all the various components of the Mining industry in Africa can be found, mainly from exploration, Mining, downstream services, financial services and other related Mining activities will be planted in Ghana. To achieve this, it will require that "We at this ministry will create a conducive environment for Private sector involvement and that will mean a whole gamut of measures are needed to attract private investments and that is exactly what we intend to do." On her part, the Canadian High Commissioner, H.E Ms. Kathleen Caaba said Ghana, is blessed with many natural resources as Canada is with lots of expertise and know-how, and she is looking forward to continuing to work closely with the Ministry in developing Ghana's vast resources together. The Chairman of the Appiatse Support Fund Committee, Rev. Dr. Joyce Aryee says the over GHc35 Million received as donations to the Appiatse Support Fund is not sufficient to rebuild the community. According to her, although it is not sufficient, she is however grateful to all contributors for their enormous contributions so far. Addressing Journalists in Accra on Monday, she said "This amount notwithstanding, we are far from reaching what we would call sufficient funds. This is because the extent of damage to the Appiatse Township cannot be over emphasized and this amount raised so far will not be adequate" Dr. Joyce Aryee made this declaration when the Appiatse Support Fund Committee held a Press Briefing on Monday, 4th April, 2022 to among others update the general public on funds received so far and to deliberate on how to develop concrete proposals for soliciting more funds to be able to support the project which is set to begin by end of April, 2022. She also started clearly that the monies collected does not include the 5 million dollar fine allotted to Maxam Company to pay into the fund, disclosing that Maxam is yet to pay that Fine through the Minerals Commission. She further opined that, for the purpose of utmost transparency, the committee will at an appropriate time, make available to the Press and the general public the list of Corporate Institutions and Patriotic Individuals who have donated both in cash and kind to the fund and captured in the Bank Statements of the Fund. The Chairman of the Support Fund Committee, Rev. Dr. Joyce Aryee also made a passionate appeal to all who are yet to donate, to do so and enable a fast and steady reconstruction of the town in order to ensure that the people of Appiatse, are relieved from the untold hardship and damage to their properties. He asked Ghanaians through the media to be patient while they put together an inventory to know how much will be needed, adding that the exact quotation of amount will also depend on the contractor who is awarded the contract to reconstruct the community. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has inaugurated twelve (12) joint venture production companies under the Defence Industries Holding Company Limited (DIHOC) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), with a call on the business community to venture more into such collaborations with the armed forces. “Interesting, and it is very important, these are all joint venture entities formed between private companies and the Ghana Armed Forces. Therefore, this development presents a beautiful synergy between the efficiencies availed by the private sector and the institutional discipline and diligence availed by the armed forces in driving the industrialisation strategy of the government,” he stressed. According to him, such collaborations between the private sector and the army will help to develop a diversity of production value-chain that will mutually benefit both the civilians and the military. The event also witnessed the commissioning of several construction equipment provided by the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) as its role in the joint venture company. The construction equipment will enable the various field engineers of the GAF to undertake various construction works. These include roads, buildings and to also manage and maintain the fleet of JGC. Dr. Bawumia made the call while speaking at the inauguration of 12 new joint venture companies under DIHOC, and the commissioning of construction ceremony on Monday, April 4, 2022, at the Burma, Accra. Among the 12 entities are DIHOC Footwear Division, DIHOC Primesec Ghana Ltd., Defence Electronic Technology Limited, DIHOC Blackswan International Ltd., DIHOC MacDan Logistics Solutions Ltd., 360 Defence Builders Ghana Ltd., DIHOC Energy West Ghana Limited, DIHOC Denzel Ghana Limited and others. He noted that though the GAF have had DIHOC, “this entity has not been leveraged significantly to catalyst the industrlisation of our country until now.” This state of affairs in the GAF, he indicated, were among the reasons the Akufo-Addo administration instituted the flagship programme One District One Factory in the clarion call for a Ghana Beyond Aid. He said the creation of such an industrial complex has the potential of creating 1,5000 direct jobs, hence described as “amazing” the over a billion dollars investment portfolio being provided by the private sector under the partnership. The vice president hinted that there were ongoing arrangements to increase the number of companies under the industrial complex including the development of a 20,000-acre land into a cattle ranch and other agro-businesses, among other businesses. He, therefore, assured the companies of the government’s support to ensure that they thrive to become the bedrock of a defence industrial complex that will not only serve the security and defence needs of Ghana and Africa but also countries across the world. While applauding the GAF for their continuous efforts to preserve Ghana’s territorial integrity and the general peace across, Dr. Bawumia pointed out that the current system of armaments acquisition through purchase agreements have been best with several challenges “The Ghana Armed Forces and all other security establishments in the country have depended mainly on the import of security hardware and equipment for their operations. Armaments such as armoured vehicles, weapons, ammunitions, communication systems are all procured from external entities, mostly through sale and purchase agreements. This structure of armaments acquisition through purchase agreements raises several challenges that continue to undermine the efficiency of the GAF,” he said. Additionally, he indicated that most of the foreign suppliers do not have a local logistics support in Ghana to help maintain these very expensive and sophiscated armaments. Consequently, the maintenance and support required for these defence and security assets’ effectiveness are not readily available. Consequently, Dr. Bawumia said the maintenance and logistical support for these assets usually come with huge costs to the government even in cases where these ammunitions are donations from other countries. Again, he said these challenges also shorten the life spans of these assets and reduce optimum functioning during use in some instances. “Also there is little skill transfer and no technology transfer in such sales and purchase arrangements with foreign suppliers,” the vice president bemoaned. Dr. Bawumia used the occasion to commission several construction equipment provided by the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC). He also performed a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a medical facility for the GAF. The Director of Legal, GAF, General Benjamin Amoah Boakye, said the GAF have had a very good relationship the JGC for the past years. The past 24 hours have been truly nostalgic. It’s the 3rd NUGS Congress in the past four years. Tinkaro-Gombilla found agreeable grounds to hand over their two-headed union to Isaac Jay Hyde and his fellow executives. History remembers them for succeeding at what many had failed to do, in almost a decade. It was to be the beginning of redemption for NUGS. And indeed it was. After serving for close to two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic, leadership of the union was handed down to Emmanuel Boakye Yiadom, Julius Kwame Anthony and the rest of their colleagues in 2021. The period after that has seen even a more significant boost in the relevance of the union to the average Ghanaian student. Though bumpy at some points, Emmanuel YB, Julius Anthony and the other incumbent executives have built a useful foundation for the union which is attracting people to NUGS and are now beginning to feel it matters to their student life. You can check on social media how people hail current executives of the union for standing up to one authority or the other. That’s very good progress, considering where the union was just some 5 years ago. As they say, it is good to show up when you are around but the real test of a leader is what happens in his absence. Will what s/he has built over the period be able to stand the test of time? Julius and YB and all leaders of what now looks clearly like a voyage into factions in the union should know that, if this union breaks again, they will be held for it. If the union gets tattered again, it will be in their name and they’ll forever be remembered as the ones who took the union back into its dark days. The dark days where NUGS was muted and blacklisted by credible media houses because of factionalism, the dark days where NUGS had no representation on statutory government boards and committees because it had two faces, the dark days when student activism was at its lowest and student voices were missing from government policy interventions and considerations. Both Kwesi Atuahene and Dennis Appiah Larbi who appear to be the new faces emerging must be weary of becoming the pawns which are used to destroy the new NUGS and drag it back into the abyss of worthlessness. The NUGS which was the pivot around the organization and evacuation of stranded Ghanaian students from Ukraine. The NUGS which was at the center of the admission of the 499 students refused entry into the Ghana School of Law. The NUGS which has rejuvenated the base of student groupings that government now sees it as a major stakeholder to engage in various means. I can go on and on with several instances that the new NUGS has made students smile for one reason or the other in just the past few months. In any case, both Julius and YB exemplify the reality that losing an election is not the end of a person’s life. In 2019, Emmanuel Boakye Yiadom lost the NUGS presidential race to Isaac Jay Hyde. As former Morning Show on University of Ghana’s Radio Univers, I remember interviewing a teary and utterly broken YB on the morning after the congress. His words ‘if this is how they choose to repay me after all that I have done, I leave them to God. I will not be discouraged. I wish him [Jay Hyde] all the best’. He clearly had issues with the process But he didn’t declare himself President just because of that. Much as I would have loved for him to challenge the results in a court of competent jurisdiction, he did not. And that was also okay. At the next Congress in 2021, YB was elected president. If you still don’t get the point, look to Julius Anthony. He lost the SRC presidential race in 2019 at University of Ghana. This was an election which had all credible polls tipping his ticket with Kwaku Asante as the winning ticket. But he lost. Today he is General Secretary of NUGS, representing an even larger congregation of students. I am not saying keep quiet when you disagree with the process. By all means challenge a fraudulent system, but don’t do that by committing another fraud. I really may not have to go into the details of this particular 2022 NUGS Congress at Ejisu, because it’s the same script with different characters. But whether it is declaring yourself winner before the process ends or it is hijacking the process so that all other voices won’t matter to the outcome, you have no respect and no means of making any real impact if the front breaks. That’s the most certain prediction anyone with even half a brain can make. So hasten slowly. Two heads are indeed better than one but there’s no NUGS if there are two heads on its neck. The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD) says it is impressed with operations at both the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP) and the Mudor Faecal Treatment Plant, formerly Lavender Hill, all in the Greater Accra Region. The sector Minister, Honourable Dan Kwaku Botwe, made the observation after a site tour of the two facilities owned by subsidiaries of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) on Friday, April 1, 2022. He was accompanied by chief directors of his ministry. And based on that satisfaction, the minister indicated that his technical team will follow-up with another visit. According to him, all these were being done to ensure that Ghanaians have value for money. "...so that when they [JGC] bring their management service agreement, we will, on behalf of the Government of Ghana, make sure that the people of Ghana have value for money," he assured. The tour follows a similar one Mr. Botwe made last week at the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant (KCARP) at Adagya in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, also owned by JGC. The Accra tour afforded the minister the chance to observe first-hand the operations of the two state-of-the-art waste management plants. It also formed part of the MLGDRD's monitoring role of ensuring that JGC was keeping to the terms of the management service agreement signed between the government and JGC. He said since 2012, the Government of Ghana has had a management service agreements with JGC’s compost and recycling plants in Kumasi and Accra. "...we have seen that they have improved upon what they are doing. We have all seen a new plant installed at ACARP. And the issue is that once they go by the tonnage, what they process and what is in the management service agreement, they review it as and when there is an increase in their capacity," he explained. Mr. Botwe used the opportunity to also call on the assemblies to be effective in the management of waste. He noted that though it was appropriate to sanction sanitation offenders, he added that it was also crucial for the bye-laws to be made easier for people to obey. Continuing, Hon. Botwe appealed for more transfer stations, particularly in Accra. Such a move, he said, will not only cut down the turnaround time for those using tricycles to collect and dump waste, but more importantly deter them from dumping waste along the roadside, especially in the night. At the Mudor Faecal Treatment Plant, which was the minister’s first port of call, the Head of Process Engineering, Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL), Ing. Eric Amofa Sarkodie, made a passionate appeal to residents in Accra to ensure that their sceptic tanks are free from solid materials. “At the faecal plant, are operations are on faecal sludge, but most often when the tanks come to dislodge the faecal sludge we find solid materials including pads, woods, old shoes and even aborted babies,” he bemoaned. This development, he disclosed, was costing his company some GHC25,0000 to waste management companies to collect these solid materials to the landfill sites, adding that the practice was helping them in anyway. Ing. Amofa Sarkodie later conducted the minister and his team around the faecal treatment plant. The General Manager of ACARP, Mr. Michael Padi Tuwor, who thanked Hon. The Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Decentralization (MLGRD), Dan Kwaku Botwe has admonished the various assemblies to make their by-laws on sanitation friendly to ensure a smooth implementation. According to him, making the bylaws friendly is the best way to make enforcing it easy for the purpose at which the bylaws are enacted will be achieved. The Minister who is also the MP for Okere was speaking to the media during his site visit to Zoomlion Ghana Limited's waste recycling sites and Sewage Waste treatment sites in Accra on Friday. He said "The laws are made for the people and there is a need for the assemblies to make them friendly which he says will make cleaning and deposure of the liquid and solid waste easy" He, therefore, expressed satisfaction in the work that was being done at the treatment sites by Jospong Group of Companies. The Minister stressed that the effort by Jospong will go a long way in helping clean and recycling of waste gather in the country. "Much as we might be sanctioning people who go against the law, we should also make it easier for it to be obeyed" He urged the Regional Ministers and Assemblies to make it easier for the people on even the tricycle to manufacture. "The Assemblies must get the people to buy into the idea ans get community" "I believe the citizens when well educated they will ensure their community is without filth" He mentioned that Jospong Group of Companies has improved on what it does. He commended the firm on the new plant installed. He stressed that once Jospong Group goes by the tonnage of what they process and what is in the management services, it will the form increase in its capacity. "The safety procedures and there is health regulations that they are expected to obey" "They have the liquid waste and the solid waste and we have a management service agreement for the faecal treatment plant and solid waste" "We are impressed with what we have seen and more of my technical men will be doing follow-ups" "The Assemblies have bye-laws and but they can make the citizens aware of their new law and adhere to it." On his part, the Head of Engineering at the Sewage System Ghana Limited under Jospong Group of Companies, ING Eric Amofa Sarkodie has expressed worry over the disposal of solid waste such as sanitary pads, shoes, diapers, etc into the toilet sewage system. The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor has called for the active and urgent involvement of the Ghanaian Youth in combating Climate Change and in other national discourse. This, the Minister believes will help shape and bring true meaning to the national conversation, especially at a time where nations are collectively working to find workable solutions to respond to Climate Change and other related issues of the national concern. Speaking at the maiden edition of the Young Professionals and Youth Coalitions Climate Change Summit, held in Accra on the theme "Confronting Our Individual and Collective Roles in Addressing the Climate Change Crisis" On Friday 1st April, 2022, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor said the climate crisis is reaching a tipping point, adding that the Science, data, and events, both at National and Global levels are clearly pointing to the devastating nature of the crisis. He maintained that without tackling Climate Change, "we cannot eradicate poverty, we cannot eliminate hunger, we cannot generate good health and well-being, we cannot build sustainable cities and communities, we cannot protect life below water, we, certainly cannot protect life on land". The Lands Minister, however urged Stakeholders to adopt innovative approaches to respond to Climate Change with a high sense of urgency, inclusiveness, and in ways that strengthen the resilience of respective ecosystems. "Our response must involve both individual and collective actions, and must be embraced by the Youth, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Political and Traditional leaders, Local Governments and Public and Private Sector actors " he said. At the National level, the Minister touched on some key Government interventions in tackling Climate Change such as the Green Ghana Project, which will see to the Planting of 20 Million trees this year, and the commitment to the Joint Framework of Action (JFA), signed with the Government of Cote d 'Ivoire, and thirty-six Cocoa and chocolate producing companies to halt deforestation and forest degradation due to Cocoa production, stressing that "we are implementing the Forest Investment Program (FIP) to address the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation in the high forest and traditional zones, to enhance Caborn stocks and improve the livelihoods of rural communities. Hon. Jinapor described the consciousness of young men and woman on the African continent as "at an all-time high" and commended the organizers of the Climate Change summit in Accra for the laudable initiative while urging participants, mainly the Youth, to think outside the box and proffer innovative solutions to tackle the Climate Change Challenge. "We must build on what we know, and develop the right tools and technologies to effectively communicate with our farmers, and deliver a low-carbon growth" he maintained. Mr. Andy Osei Oprah, President of the Young Professionals and Youth Coalition Programme (YPYC) in stating the purpose for the Youth Climate Summit expressed his joy in addressing the determined Youth, who are keen on taking charge of the environment for the good of humanity and posterity. Mr. Okrah assured that, despite Climate Change proving to be a real challenge to the attainment of lofty ideas and goals of sustainable development, "We are not hopeless, we are full of ideas and positive energies that we can unleash to arrest these threats to address the effects of Climate change in our communities, nations and continents" he maintained. The West Africa Senior Advisor for Climate Change and Natural Resources at the British High Commission in Ghana, Dr. Julian Wright who represented the High Commissioner, encouraged the Ghanaian Youth saying "Ghana is on the forefront on the climate challenge fight and the Youth must have a voice that leads to negotiations". He further congratulated Ghana for her involvement in the COP 26 last year, saying he is looking forward to Ghana's participation in COP 27 to be held in partnership with Egypt. Mr. Wright again acknowledged some efforts by Ghana to push the agenda of Climate change through campaigns of the Ghanaian Youth, just as the Youth of United Kingdom who have manged to take leadership role across all levels and on climate change due to consistent pressure from the youth campaigns domestically. Shandong Gold Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited has on Friday, 1st April, 2022 donated a hefty amount of USD$50,000 as their contribution towards the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Appiatse community. Speaking during the presentation, the Board Chairman of the Company, Mr. Zang Hongxun asserted that the management of Shandong Gold/Cardinal Mining Limited attach a lot of importance to the severity of the disaster and after several meetings, a decision was taken to make such donation to the Support Fund. He hoped that their donation will help with the rehabilitation of the community after the disaster, while extending their condolences to all the victims and families that were affected with the disaster. ''We hope that Appiaste community will be reconstructed as soon as possible so that all the people involved will get back to their feet and have a happy life again." The Board Chairman employed the opportunity to extend his appreciation to all parties who showed support to the development of the Shandong Gold Group project in Ghana, disclosing that the company is a year old in the country. He also hoped that the construction and development of the project, will soon be completed for the benefit and interest of the local communities and individuals around. The Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant (KCARP) at Adagya in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region has acquired permit from Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to involve its office for ecotourism administrations. This is in line with KCARP’s mission of advancing a superior and supportable climate for all. Ecotourism is responsible tourism that invests in and supports the protection of the environment and conservation of natural resources. KCARP is using this to promote cultural and environmental awareness. We are also using it as a tool to encourage positive experience for both visitors and hosts. Additionally, to boost employment and financial opportunities for the local people and to preserve the natural environment to ensure a clean, green and a healthy environment for all. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assented to the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) bill to officially make it a law. Beginning May 1, 2022, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) will start collecting the levy. President Akufo-Addo reportedly signed the bill into law on Thursday, March 31, 2022.
