President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke says he is confident the collaboration between his outfit, the Supreme Council for Arab-African Economy and the various state agencies will lead to significant investments. He also added he is considering building a University which will train doctors and nurses in the country. Level 100 students of the Atebubu College of education, in the Atebubu Amantin Municipality of the Bono East Region, who reported to the school for the semester, without plastic chairs, as prescribed by the Students Representative Council (SRC) have been sent home. The SRC had in a communique, on Wednesday, 25 May 2022, directed first-year students to come along with plastic chairs when reporting for the semester. The SRC’s directive was to help address the problem of inadequate furniture at the college. “Notwithstanding, the ceremonial chairs you were asked to buy, have called for a restructure of your registration into the various dormitories, that is, all the mattresses would be in the custody of the hall president to whom you are to submit your plastic chairs and receive your mattress number of which will be recorded against your name,” the SRC noted in the communique. The SRC, therefore refused level 100 students’ entry for reporting without their plastic chairs. A level 100 student, resident in Atebubu, in a bid to caution other students intending to report for the semester without the plastic chair, shared her experience. “I’m on an Okada en route to my house, I live here in Atebubu. The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) John Boadu has assured that the mistakes that were made which resulted in the party losing a number of seats in Parliament to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 elections have been corrected going into the next elections. Prior to the 2020 polls, the NPP comfortably controlled 169 seats as against the 106 controlled by the NDC. The NPP lost 37 seats in the last elections to now control 137 seats, the same number for the NDC and one independent lawmaker. Speaking during his campaign launch on Tuesday May 31, John Boadu said “It is true in 2020, yes we won the presidential but we lost great majority of our parliamentary seats. One thing that one must understand is that there are seats that are called borrowed seats. For instance, in 2016 we snatched 55 seats from the NDC. Out of these 55 seats 23 of them we lost the Presidential. “We won Parliamentary and lost presidential. Going into 2020, I knew it, some of the constituencies we were going to lose anyway because we won the Parliamentary with closed to 33 per cent. “In some cases, it is because the NDC parliamentary candudate or parliamentarians went independent against their own party so the votes split and we won. So some of these things, in doing the analysis, for some of us who have been working with these numbers, and we know why some of the seats are lost" “The intransigent and strong position that sometimes our own members take, particularly matters arising out of our Parliamentary primaries. The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) has told the public not to attribute thunderstorms in the recent rains to spiritualties. The GMA urged the public to rather take precautionary measures when raining. The GMA explained that injuries’ that occur during thunderstorm are due to meteorological conditions but in our part of the world, such occurrences are attributed to spiritualties. The Chief Forecaster at GMA, Felicity Ahafianyo, made the appeal while reacting to the thunder which struck and killed a 17-year-old male student of the Sokode Senior High School at Ho in the Volta Region. The incident which happened during heavy rains in the late hours of Monday, May 30, 2022, killed the victim named Emmanuel Dorli who was said to be in the company of two of his female colleague students. The two students who were also affected are currently in the Ho Teaching Hospital receiving treatments. Reports say the late Emmanuel hawks coconut by the roadside after school. Madam Ahafianyo told 3FM’s Sunrise hosted by Alfred Ocansey on Tuesday that “in our part of the world it is attributed to spirituality but in the US, it [thunder] kills about 50 people in a year so it is very possible in Ghana”. She added “There could be thunder which could kill in the coming rains in Ghana. Yes. It can happen. British High Commissioner to Ghana Harriet Thompson has clarified the motive behind her tweet on the arrest of social media activist Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor on Tuesday, May 17. She said her tweet was harmless and would not have gotten people onto the streets as suggested in a letter by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare Dr. Akuffo Dampare had questioned the UK High Commissioner over the tweet, noting that it is against the Vienna Convention of 1961. “What is more, we consider your tweet a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961 which enjoins diplomatic missions not to interfere in the internal affairs of their host countries. “Your Excellency, the fact that you use the phrase ‘arrested again’, we believe, must mean you were making reference to previous occasions Mr Barker-Vormawor was arrested for threatening the security of the state and recently for motor traffic offences.” The IGP took cognisance of precedents in Britain where some religious leaders were picked up for pronouncements considered threatening to the state. “This, we believe, your country did in its quest to safeguard the security of the state and ensure the sustenance of the peace the inhabitants enjoy.” But in an interview on GHOne Television on Tuesday, May 31, Harriet Thompson said her intention was not to spark any trouble. “My experience[s] of Ghana, are peace-loving nation where people do have the right to express themselves, where they do have the right to come and protest things that matter to them. “A tweet like that is not going to be the thing that will get people onto the streets, in my view. Residents Ho, the Volta Regional capital, where a 17-year-old boy was allegedly struck by lightning, have reportedly left the corpse in the open for fear of suffering spiritual consequences. It is believed that, until a ritual is performed to purify the scene where the incident happened as well as the corpse itself, anyone who dares approach the dead body may also be struck by thunder or suffer other spiritual consequences. When Citi News visited the scene on Tuesday, a day after the incident, the body was covered with some plantain leaves, with the aluminum basin, believed to contain the coconuts he was selling, lying next to him. His heartbroken mother, Rejoice Kwao, narrated that she was at work when she got a call and was told about her son’s death. "They have been selling coconut for some time now. But today I was at work when I received a call about lightning striking my son. I came here only to see the boy on the floor lifeless. My brother takes care of coconuts for people, so they pluck from him also. "But I don’t know what happened here. There has never been a problem in his selling. I’m still shocked and can’t understand this happening," the teary bereaved woman lamented. NBC is making a change in its Premier League broadcast booth. Arlo White is out. Peter Drury will exit CBS and take over the role when the league returns in August. The Daily Mailˆwas the first to report the change. Richard Deitsch of The Athletic wrote on Tuesday that he had confirmed the report, but noted that the network declined to comment further. NBC had made extensive use of Arlo White since he joined the network. In addition to being the lead voice of Premier League coverage, he also called soccer at the 2012, 2016, and 2021 Summer Olympics. Peter Drury is best known to American fans for his work with CBS. The network used him in its coverage of the Champions League. He has also been around the Premier League in recent seasons, calling the action for Amazon Prime’s coverage in the UK. Investing in the Premier Leagues turned out to be a wise move for NBC. The network won exclusive US media rights to England’s top soccer league ahead of the 2013-14 season. North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has raised concerns against the way and manner the Inspector General of Police reacted to the comments made by the British High Commission regarding the arrest of Convener of FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor. He described the IGP’s statement as highhanded, a statement that is full of raw and undiplomatic expressions. Speaking in interview with TV3’s Komla Adom on the mid day news, Tuesday May 31, Mr Ablakwa who is the Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, said “To be very sincere it is my view that this matter could have been handled much better. The IGP could have raised his concerns with the Minister respodnble for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration" “Those are the normal diplomatic channels , the Foreign Missions could have conveyed whatever concerns the Ghanaian has with the High Commissioner. If you look at the statement which has now been made public, it is very highhanded , very strong words, the use of very raw, undiplomatic language. It is as though the IGP is not speaking to a friendly country. “ For his part, a Governance Expert, Professor Baffuor Agyemang-Duah has observed that some foreign diplomats in Ghana interfere in the domestic affairs of Ghana too much. He described some of these interferences as unduly and unnecessary. The Former United Nations Senior Advisor was commenting on the concerns raised by the Inspector General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare against the comments made by the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson regarding the arrest of Convener of FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker Vormawor. The IGP described the comments by the British High Commissioner as uninformed and biased. In a tweet on Tuesday May 17, Harriet Thompson said regarding the arrest that, “Oliver Barker Vormawor, convener of #FixTheCountry movement, arrested again, I understand for a motoring offence on his way to court. I’ll be interested to see where this goes…”. The Volta Region Revenue Taskforce of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in a clampdown exercise has made more than GHC1.5 million to the Company. The money was accrued from clients in arrears and those engaged in illegal power theft through surcharges. The exercise, which begun early this year, in its catchment areas across Volta and Oti Regions took the operation to households, hostels, hotels, cold stores, pubs, restaurants and government institutions, who owed the company to comply with settlement of debts or power terminated. The task force has visited customers in Ho, Denu, Sogakope and Kpando Districts and are set to visit about 100 debtors to ensure they settle their debts. Mr Emmanuel Lumor, the Volta Regional General Manager of ECG, speaking to the media, said the directorates are replicating “the inauguration of the national taskforce by the Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to help the Company retrieve monies owed it by some customers and to curb the menace of illegal connection.” He said the Revenue Taskforce empowered by LI 2413, allows the Company to disconnect clients who refuse to pay their bills within 14 days after receiving the bill. He added that the taskforce has also served some institutions disconnection notices in accordance with LI 2413, giving them three days to settle their debt or face disconnection. The General Manager said two such tertiary institutions responded with dispatch to settle their indebtedness after receiving notices of disconnection and warned clients who remained adamant would be taken off the national grid, until they do the needful. He said the Company has intensified stakeholder engagements including announcements and radio education to sensitise customers on the need to pay their bills promptly to help ECG serve them better. Mr Lumor disclosed some illegalities uncovered during the ongoing exercise to include meter bypass, unauthorised and direct connections, and meter tampering. He bemoaned how illegal connections by some customers affected the financial strength of the Company, which hinders it from undertaking capital intensive projects that would inure to the benefit of customers. “As a Company, we have to pay power producers when we purchase power from them to distribute to our cherished customers, hence consuming power illegally prevents the Company from generating money to pay these key players on the electricity supply chain,” he said. According to Mr Lumor, illegal connection affects the distribution system by overloading transformers, which eventually leads to the breakdown of transformers and causes outages. He cautioned the public to do the right thing through prompt payment of bills and desist from illegal acts such as meter bypass since it is a criminal and dangerous act, which could cause fire outbreak and the loss of life through electrocution. Mr Lumor announced that the Company has the authority to prosecute persons engaged in such illegal acts within ECG network by an Executive Instrument (EI) 38 of the Appointment of Public Prosecution Instrument (2010). He called on the public in general to support the Company in its fight against illegal connection by reporting people who engaged in such acts to the nearest ECG office or call the national taskforce via telephone number 0551444011 and indicated that it comes with a financial reward. “There is a six per cent commission of any amount we recoup as an incentive for anyone who gave us reliable information to unearth any illegality,” he said. Ex-Ghana goalkeeper Razak Brimah believes he is better than all the shot-stoppers who have been invited for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. The 34-year-old made his national team debut in 2013 and was even Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2017 AFCON. However, he hasn’t played for the Black Stars since that tournament after falling out with Ghanaians over comments that were deemed offensive to the fans. Brimah was once again left out of Ghana’s latest squad to face Madagascar and the Central African Republic (CAR) in June. Black Stars coach Otto Addo preferred Jojo Wollacott, Lawrence Ati Zigi, Richard Ofori and Abdul Nurudeen to the veteran goalkeeper. Reacting to his latest omission, Brimah said he still has what it takes to play for the national team, insisting he is better than the current goalkeeping options. "With all due respect, I can do much better than them [the other goalkeepers,” Brimah said, as quoted by Ghanaweb. “I respect them a lot but in terms of quality? I should be part and I will play all the games with all due respect to my teammates and my colleague goalkeepers. “Those who follow me at my club side and know me from my time with the Black Stars and also understand football know that I'm 100% good.
