The Ghana Oil Company (GOIL) has supported the 2022 edition of the Green Ghana Project with an amount of GHc500,000. The donation was made by a GOIL delegation led by the Group CEO, Mr. Kwame Osei Prempeh to the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio who is also the Chairman of the National Green Ghana Planning Committee at the premise of the Ministry on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. Disclosing the rationale behind the donation, Mr. Prempeh said the company is ready to be part of anything that moves the nation forward and  government's reforestation programme, Green Ghana initiative is one of such that needs to be supported. "Our trade is selling fuel, and we know that fuel pollutes the environment so planting trees will help to absorb the carbon dioxide and make our oxygen cleaner so we can have a healthy life", he said . He stated that GOIL, as an indigenous Ghanaian business is not unaware of the huge benefit of the Green Ghana project to the sustainability of the environment. Rehashing the old saying that “when the last tree dies, the last man also dies”, Mr. Kwame Osei Prempeh hammered on the importance of tree planting and said his outfit deems necessary to support an exercise that in the long term will safeguard the environment and human lives. Receiving the dummy cheque on behalf of the National Planning Committee, Hon. Benito Owuso- Bio, made glorifying remarks about GOIL noting that the significant donation will support various activities that will be done to ensure the success of the 2022 editionof the Green Ghana Project. He disclosed that so far, 22.6 Million seedlings have been distributed and that effective monitoring and supervision will be done to keep track of the seedlings and ensure that they grow to serve the purpose for which they were planted. He remarked that the Ministry and various agencies have a daunting task seeing to the growth of the trees and he will, as the Chairman of the committee ensure that the positive reports being fed by his office with respect to the success of the project continues. Highlighting  the need for institutions in the oil and gas industry to support the project, GOIL he said, "is an oil company which sells fuel and the fuel which we have been told by the CEO is the best of quality in Ghana. Although it’s the best quality, it will still emit some carbon and that there is the need for GOIL to help off-set their carbon footprint”. Hon. Benito made further appeals to corporate institutions to contribute to the protection of the environment. Dr Antoinette Tsiboe- Darko, the Coordinator of the Fundraising committee of the Green Ghana Project expressed gratitude to GOIL Ghana and assured that the funds will be used for the intended purposes. The Ministry for Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has charged commercial banks in the country to contribute meaningfully to agriculture by making available credit facilities to farmers. According to the sector Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, it was worrying that commercial banks were reluctant in supporting farmers. “Ideally the banks are supposed to provide you (the farmers) with credit facilities to enable you expand production. But that has not been the case.” …To the extent that the President even held a meeting involving the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, myself and all the Managing Directors of the banks in the country at the Jubilee House. At the said meeting I spoke at length about the need for the banks to support the government in the agricultural sector,” he said. The Minister who was passionate about the issue indicated that in India, for instance, over the last 30 years, it is mandatory for banks to allocate a certain amount of their lending monies to agriculture. Dr. Akoto was addressing a durbar of poultry farmers at the Dormaa Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, as part of his working tour in the region. “Now what we need to do is to compel the banks to allocate their resources towards supporting agriculture in the country,” he strongly advocated. He stressed that when that is not done, agriculture which is the backbone of the Ghanaian economy will continue to suffer. He noted that his outfit was there to support farmers through various policies, adding that the “Ministry of Agriculture is not a banking institution.” In the wake of a looming global food shortage, Dr. Akoto said Ghana was fortunate to have food in abundance. However, he said the problem was rising food prices which he attributed to high transportation cost. He, therefore, assured farmers that the government was not relenting in its efforts to ameliorate their plights. On the issue of a laboratory in the region, the Minister assured that plans were far-advanced to build a laboratory stocked with medicines to take care of the poultry in the region. Earlier, a durbar was held at the Bono Regional Coordinating Council where a presentation was done by the Bono Regional Director of Agriculture, Dennis Abugri Amenga. He disclosed that there have been a boost in rice production this year, adding that the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) has contributed immensely towards this success story. The Ghana Police Service has promoted two officers, Inspector Azumah Komla Justice and No. 52543 G/L/CpL Felix Diameh for their position in effecting the arrest of No. 45638 G/Sgt Lotsu Agbeko, a Police officer stationed on the Formed Police Unit (FPU) in Accra. The police in a statement said "The above police officer was transporting the suspected Indian hemp from Have direction and failed to stop at Have police barrier when signalled by personnel on duty to do so. He attempted to escape but was given a hot chase by the personnel. On reaching a section of the road on Kpeve Mountain, he was involved in an accident and had a fracture on his left hand. 84 parcels of compressed dried leaves [were] found in his car boot." A Police Officer with number 45638 G/Sgt Lotsu Agbeko has been nabbed for allegedly carrying narcotic drugs suspected to be marijuana, commonly known as wee. The 36-year-old who was at stationed FPU, Tesano Accra, was driving his own Blue Black Toyota Corolla with registration number GC 1069 - 09 and carried a dried leave suspected to be Indian hemp. A Police Sergeant identified Lotsu Agbeko aged 36 working with the Form Police Unit (FPU) at Tesano has been involved in an accident. According to a Police situational report sighted by MyNewsGh.com, Sergeant Lotsu Agbeko was driving a Blue Black Toyota Corolla with registration number GC 1069 – 09 driving from Have in the Afadjato South District of the Volta Region. However, he refused to stop when the Police at the Have barrier signaled him to stop. He was given a hot chase by the Police at the barrier. On reaching a section of the road on Kpeve Mountain, he was involved in an accident and had a fracture on his left hand. He was rushed to the Peki Government Hospital where he is receiving treatment. After a search was conducted on his vehicle, the Police retrieved 84 parcels of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp from his car trunk. To help bridge the shortage of fertiliser in the country caused by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, local organic fertilizer producers have come together to form an association to scale up production of fertilizers to complement the government's efforts. Members of the new association--Organic Fertilizer Producers Association of Ghana (OFPAG)--will pool resources together to produce enough fertilizers to supply the country. The move was being championed by the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC). Speaking at its maiden meeting in Accra, Tuesday, June 14, 2022, the Executive Chairman of JGC, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, underscored the need for local producers of organic fertilizers to collaborate and work with a sense of urgency to address the current problem, especially in the wake of the global fertilizer shortage. He explained that the coming together of organic fertilizer producers will facilitate ideas sharing and allow them the space to produce adequate quality fertilizers to augment the supply needs of the country. "When we come together as an association, we will not only present a united front but we will be stronger with ideas which will enable us to contribute to resolve the fertilizer shortage in the country," he said. He recounted how JGC played an instrumental role in the country's efforts to tackle Covid. In a presentation on the need to form such an association, the Deputy Executive Director of Centre for Indigenous Knowledge of Organisational Development (CIKOD), Mr. Daniel Bannoka, pointed out that the Russia-Ukraine war had exposed the vulnerabilities in Ghana's agriculture. That, he said, was being manifested in the high agricultural inputs which was contributing to high food prices across the country. "We must be worried as a country because the severity of the situation is being felt everywhere in the country," he said. According to him, there was the need to take action now, to prevent food shortages in the country. Against this backdrop, Mr. Bannoka was happy that local organic fertilizer producers had resolved to form an association to intervene in the fertilizer shortage problem. "By coming together, you will have a big voice, benefit from unity in strength, and have a strong negotiating power," he spelt out. While enumerating some of the advantages of belonging to an association, he admonished them to try and weed out charlatans from the organic fertilizer space. He also called on the government to support the association by creating an enabling environment to enable it thrive. "The state can also waive taxes on machines that will be imported by members of the association," he urged. More importantly, he charged the association to regularly undertake good research and develop good extension content. A representative from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) encouraged the members to build up their capacities to be able to produce enough fertilizers to feed the nation. The Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Wamkele Mene, has addressed Heads and Chief Executive Officers of Regional Economic Communities (RECs) from across Africa on the implementation of the AfCFTA and its likely influence on future trade policies on the continent. Delivering an address to participants in Arusha, Tanzania on the occasion of the Second Coordination Meeting Of The heads/CEOs of RECs on the implementation of the AfCFTA, Mr. Mene observed that the implementation of AfCFTA will likely influence future trade policies of the RECs. In this regard, he said, effective collaboration between the RECs and the AfCFTA Secretariat was necessary to ensure that the AfCFTA outcomes were consistent with regional advancements in trade integration made thus far and the projections for the future. Therefore, he noted, the coordination meetings offer the RECs, Business Councils and AfCFTA Secretariat an opportunity to listen to one another, to better understand their areas of difference, and to work together to build consensus around common positions critical to their success at creating an African Economic Community. Mr. Mene reiterated that previous summits of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government have mandated the AfCFTA Secretariat, the African Union Commission, and the RECs to develop a Framework of Collaboration to enhance complementarity, synergies, and alignment of programmes and activities to facilitate the effective implementation of the AfCFTA. In his opinion, by agreeing on a workable framework which will strengthen the interdependence of RECs on the one hand and strengthen the cooperation between RECs and the AfCFTA Secretariat on the other hand, the RECs, Business Councils and the AfCFTA Secretariat will be taking steps critical to the success of the AfCFTA. He recounted that the Secretariat, and the RECs have already received instructions from the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union to take all necessary steps to ensure the effective implementation of the AfCFTA, including facilitating commercially meaningful flow of goods and services under the AfCFTA preferential regime, across the continent. According to him, "We were also instructed to develop a coordinated approach to the implementation of the AfCFTA Agreement, with the existing RECs as building blocks." Prior to the Arusha meeting of the Heads and CEOs of RECs, there had been the Senior Officials Meeting to continue the preparation of actionable strategies towards enhancing the effective implementation of the AfCFTA, drawing lessons from the implementation of RECs’ Free Trade Areas (FTAs) and Customs Unions. The Senior Officials also engaged with the European Union, with a view towards mobilizing resources for the implementation of the AfCFTA. The meeting with the EU, which was AfCFTA's second joint meeting for 2022, was of particular importance as the AfCFTA Secretariat and the RECs coordinate their efforts towards mobilizing resources for the effective implementation of the AfCFTA. According to Mr. Mene, "In between our first coordination meeting in Accra – Ghana in September 2021 and this current round of meetings, our Senior Officials have been able to convene – both formally and informally – on a number of issues, including on the EU Support and the AfDB’s Phase II Support to the Secretariat." The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio, who doubles as the National Chairman of the 2022 Green Ghana Planning Committee has disclosed that a total of 22,671,696 million seedlings have so far been distributed for the 2022 edition of the Green Ghana agenda, which well exceeds that initial 20 million seedling targeted. Addressing the media on behalf of the Sector Minister, Hon. Samuel, A. Jinapor during a press conference on the aftermath of the Green Ghana Day, on Monday, 13th June, 2022, the Deputy Minister called for an effective monitoring and supervision of the seedlings planted to fuel the success of the 2022 edition of government's aggressive afforestation and reforestation program. "We need to make conscious efforts to nurture the trees by watering them, protect them from destruction, prevent fires, weed under them until they grow to maturity" he said. The Deputy Lands Minister added that, the "survival rate this year will be more than the 85% survival rate last year. The Ministry has put in place a Monitoring and Assessment Team under the Chairmanship of Hon. Francis Manu-Adabor, who is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Forestry to undertake comprehensive field assessment of trees planted this year which includes other members of the Committee like myself and the CEO of the Forestry Commission." Owusu-Bio used the occasion to rebuff claims by some section of the media that the Green Ghana Day program was politicized and partisan, indicating that the Green Ghana Day was a national assignment and that the inclusiveness of Ghanaians with diverse backgrounds in the political and religious landscape such as the Former President of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama, Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, the National Chief Imam and high profile members of the Clergy gives this clear indication that it is for Ghana. In responding to a question posed by the media on the budget and expenditure of the Green Ghana Day, Hon. Benito Owusu disclosed that so far, GHC 6 Million cedis was disbursed to the Ministry for the Green Ghana Day, out of which the 22 Million tree seedlings were obtained, which also included publicity and other expenses in the lead up to the planting. He added that subsequently, a detailed report of the expenses will be made available to the public just like that of last year. The CEO of the Forestry Commission, Mr. John Allotey on his part, gave an indept presentation on the provisional results of the seedlings distributed and planted on the Green Ghana Day. Pertinent among things highlighted in his presentation were the individual targets assigned to Regions and the actual results achieved. He noted that among the 16 regions, the Ashanti, Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Eastern and the Greater Accra Regions exceeded their target while the Northern, North East and Oti Region are yet to meet their target due to low rainfall in these regions. He said, from the 50% target purported to be planted in the forest reserves, 40.2% have been planted and the other 50% for homes and other locations have seen a 59.8% work done, while reiterating that on the whole 22,671,696 seedlings have been distributed so far. "The national target was to plant 20 million seedlings but as we speak now, we have distributed 22,671,696 and even with this, the districts are still entering some of the figures and so we will update you as and when they come in" He disclosed He also gave an analysis on the performances of various districts in the regions saying that " although some districts are yet to meet their target, generally performances have been very impressive in the various districts" He mentioned the highest seedlings distributed per demand, naming Teak, Ofram, Cidrella, Acacia, and Mahogany as examples, adding that Fruits and Timber species as examples of the species most requested for. The CEO also welcomed the role of the media in helping to monitor the seedlings planted during Green Ghana Day and added that all information regarding Green Ghana is available at the District Level of Forestry Commission. He applauded some lead private plantation companies and churches who contributed to the success of the Project, outlining Global Green, Sanatex Ghana, Form Ghana, Sakam Savanna, The Pentecost Church, Catholic, Apostolic, Methodist and Assemblies to God as examples. The Minister for Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has re-affirmed that the government will continue to encourage farmers to use and apply organic fertilisers. This, he said, has become necessary because of the global shortage of inorganic fertliser and its attendant high prices. “The issue is to do with the shortage of organic fertiliser. We see that there is a switch because of the high prices of the inorganic fertiliser to organic liquid fertiliser which they [farmers] claim is not as effective as the NPK. But at least it is better than nothing!” Dr. Akoto averred. The Minister made the observation while briefing journalists at a maize farm at the Ghana Prison Service in Duayaw Nkwanta, Ahafo Region during his regional working tour on Monday, June 13, 2022. The six-day working tour which began in Ahafo will take the Minister to regions including Bono, Bono East, Ashanti and Eastern. As part of the trip, the Minister will undertake field tours to some project sites and farms and also use the opportunity to interact with farmers and acquaint himself with challenges confronting their activities. According to Dr. Akoto, he has been amazed so far by the cooperation of farmers regarding the use of organic fertilizers. “I was amazed. I thought it was going to take a year or two to persuade farmers to switch, but necessity is the mother of all inventions so they are really making do with the constraints of the fertilizer shortage.” …From what we have seen the weather has been good. Wherever we have been we have seen the maize tasselling very well at this time of the year, and they all admit that compared to last year they rainfall has been excellent,” he said. Earlier, Dr. Akoto paid courtesy call on the Omanhene of Goaso Traditional Council, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah. Receiving the Minister and his team, Nana Bosomprah expressed delight at the Minister’s visit to the region, adding that “as a cocoa farmer myself, I am very keen in agriculture.” He bemoaned the fact that rains were not falling as it was expected, attributing the development to human activities including indiscriminate cutting down of trees in the forests in the region. He appealed to the Minister to ensure that farmers have more supply of fertilisers to aid them in their farming activities. According to the Omanhene of Goaso, it was sad that farmers did not have any help in terms of pricing of their commodities, lamenting that the situation has led to buyers giving any prices. He, therefore called for the introduction of pricing for farm produce from the food basket regions to avoid cheating and exploitation of farmers. He said it was crucial for the government to change some of the existing laws to make agriculture more lucrative, especially to the youth. He also made a strong case for better offices for agriculture offices in the region. “Ghanaian farmers are improving in rice production and packaging and it is important that we take advantage of this to create laws to enhance patronage,” he said. He appealed to the government for machines to help in rice processing to enable famers produce more. Nana Bosomprah urged the military to do whatever is necessary to protect the remaining forest reserves in the region. .“We must also construct warehouses to store foods produce under the Plant for Food and Jobs to address any food shortage,” he indicated. Responding Dr. Akoto admitted that the high prices of food products on the markets were of a concern to the government. He assured that the government was working on bringing scales to support in the pricing of food products. Again, he disclosed that the government has imported machines from Brazil to help in rice production in the country, hence promised that 10 of the millers would be brought to the region to support rice farmers. Other places visited by the Minister included the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECoP) at Ahoduom Nkwanta in the Asunafo North. Municipality. He also visited and interacted with ginger farmers at Asutifi South. Mrs. Christiana Asumadu who acted as the Spokeseperson for the ginger farmer lamented the high cost of agricultural inputs. “There is also the issue of low farm yields due to the lack of ready markets to purchase their gingers after harvest,” she indicated. The Ghana Police Service says it has removed from office its Deputy Regional Police Commander and interdicted two others following Monday's disturbing incident which occurred at the Islamic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region. According to the Police, the three affected include; the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP/Mr. Kwasi Akomeh-Apraku, the Regional Operations Officer, DCOP/Mr George Ankomah and the Suame Divisional Police Commander, ACP/Mr. Alex Cudjoe Acquah. In a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs, Chief Superintendent of Police, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, it said "As a result, the Deputy Regional Commander, DCOP/Mr. Kwasi Akomeh-Apraku, who was acting as the Regional Commander has been removed from his position and has been interdicted. Two others, ACP/Mr George Ankomah, the Regional Operations Officer and ACP/Mr. Alex Cudjoe Acquah, the Suame Divisional Police Commander have also been interdicted to make way for a thorough investigation into the incident" The statement also mentioned that the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has also commenced a full-scale investigation into the conduct of the officers who were responsible for the Police response. It also noted that Police clinical psychologists have been deployed to visit the school to offer psychosocial support to the student body. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has assured students and Management of the Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi that he will look into the conduct of Police officers deployed for crowd control during their protest. About 25 students were hospitalised after Police allegedly opened tear gas on them while they were protesting frequent crashes of pedestrians in front of the School. Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, while addressing the students on Monday after the incident, said investigations will be conducted into the matter to ensure the necessary action is taken. “I also want to assure you that whatever happened in terms of the policing aspect of it, we are going to look into it and take all actions that need to be taken to ensure that at the end of the day, the right thing is done, professionalism is deepened in a manner that will not put anybody’s lives at risk because as Police, we are here to protect lives and property and if we cannot do that, we might have failed our duties and our mandates and it is something that we do not want to do,” he said. The IGP also noted that authorities will ensure speed ramps would be constructed in front of the school to reduce the incessant road accidents which precipitated the protest. “As soon as I touched base and went round and saw the dangers that you are exposed to, I made a couple of calls and urban roads and its leadership have accepted to quickly come around and ensure that the right thing is done to save your lives to live to your full potential" “We are going to monitor to see to its full accomplishment, so that each life will be protected,” he added. Dr George Akuffo Dampare, upon hearing the incident paid a visit to the Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi to get first-hand details of an alleged Police attack on some students of the Institution on Monday. The visit was part of investigations being conducted into the incident by the Police administration. “The Inspector-General of Police is proceeding to Kumasi for a first-hand assessment of the situation. The Police have commenced an investigation into the incident and further developments will be communicated,” the Police said in a statement. Over 20 students of Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi were rushed to the hospital on Monday following an alleged clash with the Police. Sources say the personnel were deployed to the School to maintain law and order. The victims were said to be part of a group of students who blocked the Abrepo Junction-Barekese road to protest pedestrian knockdowns involving students and teachers of the school. The angry students massed up on the road in protest, as they called for construction of speed rumps on that section of the road. In an interview with JoyNews few minutes after the incident, a Deputy Spokesperson of the Education Ministry, Eric Opoku Mensah, said efforts are underway to bring the situation under control. He added that the Regional Director of Education is following up with the matter to ensure all students admitted at the hospital are well catered for and safe. Even if that is done, that wouldn’t be an antidote to an accident occurring but again, we need to educate and advise our drivers who ply this road to be cautious when getting to a school junction,” he said. Ambulance Service The National Ambulance Service has pegged the number of victims admitted to hospital, at 25. Regional Director of the Service, Sommit Duut, says all the victims are responding to treatment. He, however, stressed that they have not treated any traumatic injury like that of gunshot wounds. The Food and Drugs Authority has revealed that management of the East Legon branch of Marwako Fast Food Limited have destroyed some food items under investigations in the controversial food-poisioning brouhaha. According to the FDA, the hampered food stuffs was done following an unapproved and unilateral decision of the management of Marwako. In a statement sighted by Thinknewsonline.com, it said "The process to establish the root cause of the contamination halls been unfortunately hampered by the unapproved and unilateral decision of the management of Marwako to destroy some of thee food items whilst the Investigation was in progress" It added that the FDA has applied the appropriate regulatory sanctions and is to also monitor the implementation of the corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) by the management of Marwako.
