Social media has been buzzing after a lady identified as Safina Diamond was arrested for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend in the neck and stomach multiple times. In a video that was shared on social media by blogger, E.ntamoty, he noted that the said boyfriend of the lady landed in Ghana weeks before his untimely death. The lady is reported to have said stabbing the boyfriend was an act of self-defence as she is currently being held at the Adenta Court Complex. “Young Ghanaian lady identified on Instagram as Safina Diamond arrested for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend who just came back from Canada weeks ago in the neck and stomach multiple times leading to his death. “According to the lady, her act was in self-defence. She’s currently at the Adenta Court Complex with her accomplice,” the blogger captioned on July 29, 2022. In the meantime, the Ghana Police has not released a report on the case. Two veteran Nigerian actors, Cynthia Okereke and Clemson Cornel, have reportedly been kidnapped after they both failed to show up at a movie shoot. According to popular Nigerian blogger, Lindaikeja, the news was announced by the Actors Guild Nigeria on July 29, 2022. The caption that accompanied the blogger’s devastating news read, “Actors Cynthia Okereke and Clemson Cornel were kidnapped. Both actors are suspected to have been kidnapped after they failed to return from a movie set in Ozalla Town in Enugu state. “The Actors Guild of Nigeria confirmed this development in a statement released this afternoon.” Director of Communications for Actors Guild Nigeria, Monalisa Chinda, is quoted to have confirmed the news via a statement, saying they received the news from families of the victims after they didn’t show up at their various homes. “The two members were suspected of having been kidnapped, which has increased fear amongst members about the safety of actors filming in the country. “Because of this sad development, the National President of the Guild, Ejezie Emeka Rollas, has instructed all Actors to avoid going to the outskirt of cities to film except full security cover is provided to ensure their safety,” the statement read. Ghanaian socialite and entertainment critic, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as Kwame A Plus, has graduated from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) with a second-class upper. In some pictures and videos that were shared on blogger, Nkonkonsa’s page, A Plus was captured suited in a dark blue attire with his robe and hat. Looking ready and happy to receive his certificate, the controversial social media commentator was spotted calmly seated with his classmates who were dressed in robes and hats on July 29, 2022. One of the several videos shared by the blogger saw A Plus remove his hat and walk majestically toward the podium to receive his certificate. He joins the tall list of celebrities who graduated after studying Public Relations and Governance at GIMPA. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has taken a trip to the constituency of Sarah Adwoa Safo, who he sacked barley 24 hours ago. The president was in the Dome Kwabenya constituency to cut the sod for the rehabilitation of the 23-kilometre Dome-Kitase Road project, a report by myjoyonline.com has said. While this might appear coincidental, there is no denying the widespread calls by some of Sarah Adwoa Safo’s constituents for her to be booted out of office as the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, while similar calls heighten for her seat to be declared vacant. All these have been due to the fact that the Member of Parliament has been away from post for close to a year. There were many others who indicated, after the president announced Adwoa Safo’s sacking, that the decision had been long overdue. It would be recalled that in the statement signed by Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications, Office of the President, that announced the sacking of the MP, it said that the president’s decision was according to Article 81(a) of the 1992 constitution. The statement added that Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister, Sanitation and Water Resources, will continue as the caretaker minister until a substantive Minister. “In accordance with article 81(a) of the Constitution, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has revoked the appointment of Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, as Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, with immediate effect. “The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, will continue to act as caretaker Minister for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, until such a time that President Akufo-Addo appoints a substantive Minister,” the statement from the Presidency concluded. Wa West Member of Parliament, Peter Lanchene Toobu, who is also a retired Police Officer has said the right personalities should be hired into the Police Service. This, in his view, will help minimize the problems within the service. Mr Toobu was reacting to the recent public altercation that ensued between two Police officers which was captured on tape, as well as the corruption report which put the Ghana Police Service Number 1 on the rankings. Regarding the altercation, he said “This open altercation between the the senior Police Officer and the Junior Police Officer is an embarrassment to the service, it has brought disrepute to the Police service. “If you have people who have energy and they do have intelligence yet they do not have integrity it is plosion to the organization, they will destroy the organization.” The Police announced that this matter is being investigated. With regards to the corruption report, he said “Hire the right people, let us train them right and let us ensure that when they are exiting, they exit with dignity But a part from that let us strengthen the Police Professional Standard Bureau.” The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, took an exception to a recent research on corruption. In a 14-pointer letter to the research institutions – the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) – Dr Dampare questioned the methodology used, describing the findings as “heavily challenged and corrupt”. “We assume that such a research is aimed at finding solutions for the country’s corruption-related problems,” he acknowledged. “The Service has long acknowledged that some of its personnel may be involved in some corrupt practices and we continue to implement measures to discourage such conduct. “It probably would have been helpful if you had engaged us to take on board what is being done by the Service and incorporated this into the findings.” Story by: Laud Nartey

Almost one million people in a suburb of Wuhan – China’s central city where the coronavirus was first recorded – have been placed under lockdown. Jiangxia District residents have been ordered to stay inside their homes or compounds for three days after four asymptomatic Covid cases were detected. China follows a “zero Covid” strategy, including mass testing, strict isolation rules and local lockdowns. This has resulted in far fewer deaths than in many other countries. But the strategy is facing growing opposition as people and businesses continue to face the strain of restrictions. In Wuhan, a city of 12 million people, regular testing uncovered two asymptomatic cases two days ago. Two more cases were found through contact tracing, and shortly after the lockdown order was issued. Wuhan became known around the world in early 2020 as the first place scientists detected the new coronavirus – and the first city to be put under harsh restrictive measures. At the time, the wider world was shocked by the strict lockdown, but many cities and countries were soon forced to impose their own similar measures. Later, China became known as a Covid success story, with restrictions lifted much earlier than in many other countries. But that has changed again, with China pursuing a “zero Covid” strategy resulting in frequent local lockdowns, rather than trying to live with the virus as in most other countries. Last month, Shanghai – China’s giant financial capital with nearly 25 million residents – finally emerged from a strict two-month lockdown, though residents are adapting to a “new normal” of frequent mass testing. A rising number of Chinese companies and factory production lines are maintaining a closed-loop system in order to follow the goal of completely eliminating Covid. In order to keep parts of the economy open, employees have been told to live temporarily in their workplaces to minimise contact between work and home. Earlier this week, scientists said there was “compelling evidence” that Wuhan’s Huanan seafood and wildlife market was at the centre of the Covid outbreak. Two peer-reviewed studies re-examined information from the initial outbreak in the city. One of the studies shows that the earliest known cases were clustered around that market. The other uses genetic information to track the timing of the outbreak. It suggests there were two variants introduced into humans in November or early December 2019. Together, the researchers said this evidence suggests that the virus was present in live mammals that were sold at Huanan market in late 2019. They said it was transmitted to people who were working or shopping there in two separate “spill-over events”, where a human contracted the virus from an animal. One of the researchers involved, virologist Prof David Robertson from the University of Glasgow, told BBC News that he hoped the studies would “correct the false record that the virus came from a lab”. Hottons revealed that since his episode aired on TV, he has turned into a celebrity with its pros and cons. He disclosed that the downside of his new status included changing his usual commute. He said he could no longer take tro-tro as people placed him on a pedestal. “In a way, it has helped me because everything has a positive and negative side. The negative aspect is that I made an appearance on TV. In Ghana, when they see you on TV, they see you as a celebrity. In my neighborhood, it’s like I can’t really live my normal lifestyle. Now i can’t take tro-tro again. It’s either Uber or a taxi. The negative side is it comes with some kind of pressure.” He also mentioned that people make monetary demands on social media. “People just saw you on TV. Some people will DM you on social media to help them solve their problems (money). But we are regular people,” he said. Hottons, an aspiring musician, hopes to leverage his newfound fame to push his music and career to success. “One funny thing is I almost gave up on music. Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, has said he will not, in a rush, give a ruling on the recommendations made by the Privileges Committee of Parliament on the three New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament who were interrogated by the Committee for absenting themselves from Parliament without permission. He has therefore deferred his decision until resumption of sitting from break as Parliament rises today July 28, TV3’s Parliamentary Correspondent Komla Kluste reported. Addressing the House on Thursday July 28, Mr Bagbin said he needed time to produce a reasoned written ruling on the matter. “Honourable Members, I have consulted the old lady, the old lady has given me an advise and I think that advise is correct. The issue raised by the Majority Leader is both of substantive and procedural law. “I need time to submit to this house a reasoned, written ruling. I cannot in a haste of today, give you the ruling. In the circumstance, I will urge this House for us to call it a day.” Three New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament – Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, Henry Quartey Ayawaso Central and Sarah Adwoa Safo MP for Dome-Kwabenya were hauled before the Privilege’s Committee for absenting themselves from Parliament without permission. The Committee met Ken Agyapong and Henry Quartey however, could not meet Adwoa Safo because she was out of the jurisdiction. In its conclusion, the Committee, by a majority decision, decided that “Hon Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Hon Henry Quartey admitted having absented themselves for more than the fifteen Sittings threshold. However, the explanations given by Hon Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Hon Henry Quartey for being absent were found reasonable. With regards to Hon Sarah Adwoa Safo, in spite of all the efforts made to invite her to attend upon the Committee, the Hon Member did not appear before the Committee to provide the reasons for her absence from the House without written permission for more than the fifteen Sittings threshold. “By the provisions of Article 97 (1) (c) of the 1992 Constitution, the onus is on Hon Sarah Adwoa Safo to provide a reasonable explanation to the Privileges Committee why she shall not vacate her Seat, for having absented herself for forty-two (42) Sittings, during the period under consideration. “The Minority Members on the Committee concede that reasonable efforts were made to get Hon Sarah Adwoa Safo to appear before the Committee, however, the Minority Members are of the view that, the lack of response of Hon Sarah Adwoa Safo to the numerous invitations of the Committee should be reported to the House without any conclusions. “The above notwithstanding, the Majority, was of the view that, Hon Sarah Adwoa Safo failed to take advantage of the numerous opportunities and facilities offered her to provide reasonable explanation to the Committee with regard to her absence without leave. “Therefore, pursuant to Article 97 (1) (c) of the 1992 Constitution and the Court of Appeal decision in the case of Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare v the Attorney General & 3 Ors, the Dome-Kwabenya should be declared vacant.” Story by: Laud Nartey
