The Glorious Word Ministry International has replied to the Office of the National Chief Imam after it described its leader and Senior Pastor, Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah as a ‘charlatan on the pulpit’. The description is contained in a release from the Office of the National Chief Imam dated January 4 while rubbishing claims that National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Usman Nuhu Sharubutu consults Rev. Owusu Bempah to look into his destiny for him. Today, the Glorious Word Ministry International has stressed that it takes serious exception to the description of its General Overseer in the release from the Office of the National Chief Imam. "We wish to put on record, that as a church we take serious exceptions to the description of our General Overseer as a "Charlatan on the pulpit" among other distasteful words. We revere and hold our General Overseer in high esteem as much as we love and respect his Eminence the National Chief Imam,” the release by the Church said. It further explained that contrary to the distasteful words used in describing Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah, he is a genuine Man of God with an unblemished international reputation and a track record of immense positive contribution to the Christian faith in Ghana and beyond. The Church to set the records straight explained that Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah did not at any time claim that the Chief Imam visits or consults him to look into his destiny. It adds that the publication of Ghanaweb was clearly actuated by malice, a desire for profit, sensationalism, and calculated to disrupt the peaceful and cordial relationship between the Chief Imam and Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah. "Finally, we take this opportunity to urge his Eminence the National Chief Imam to disregard the falsehoods peddled about Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu Bempah in the interest of fostering brotherly co-existence, harmony, and peace,” the release by Glorious Word Ministry International concluded. The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor MP, says his Ministry will ensure the full implemention of the formal communique arising out of the maiden edition of the National Lands Conference (NLC) 2022, which took place in Accra last year. Addessing the NLC Committee members during the presentation of the commnuique on Thursday 5th January, 2023, the Minister remarked that considering the caliber of participants at the conference, who were from very relevant institutions related to lands, he believes  the Communique is important, and will therefore study and fully implement its contents. This communique follows the President's directive for the National Lands Conference Committee to come up with recommendations that will help build a Land administration system that is fit for purpose. The Minister pointed out that "coming after the passage of the New Land Act 2022, (Act 1036),  and the sensitisation that has come about from the Land Act, I believe putting the Land Act and this communique together, will go a great deal in helping us construct an effective Land administration system in our country which is anchored on integrity and fit for purpose". The sector Minister stressed that "We cannot have the kind of National economic development we seek as a people without a land administration system which is fit for purpose because the fulcrum around which the economic activities revolve is Land and therefore the administration of land in any country is known to build economic development". In his submission, the Minister thanked the NLC Committee which is Co-chaired by his Deputy Minister responsible for Lands and Forestry, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio together with Mr. Maxwell Adu-Nsarfoa, the Technical Director for Lands at the Ministry for their tireless efforts in ensuring the communique is delivered. He commended the Lands Commission for taking steps in the right direction which has already improved the country’s Lands administration system and which he noted can bring about the kind of economic development the President is looking forward to. He however noted that the country has not reached a satisfactory situation yet and there is a lot more to be done but has no doubt that the outcomes of the Lands Conference will assist in the collective effort at building an effective land administration system. He urged the Lands Commission and the NLC Committee to ensure that the conference of this sort is held periodically, adding that if possible, a framework should be put in place to foster continuous engagement to complement the evolving nature of land administration. The Co-Chair of the NLC Committee and Deputy Minister for Lands and Forestry Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio on behalf of his members stated the outcomes of the sessions which formed the basis of the Communique. He said it touches on Improving Security of Land Tenure, Improving Survey, Mapping, Spatial Planning, and Development, Holding of Biennial National Land Conference, Human Settlement development, Restoration of Lands Degraded through Illegal Mining, Capacity Development, Land Related SDGs and Support of Development Partners. Others include Review of the National Land Policy of 1999, Targeted Engagement with Traditional Authorities and Support for the Operationalization of the Multi-Stakeholder Platform. Hon. Benito hoped that the Ministry finds the content of the communique worthy of implementation in respect of policies on land management and land governance in Ghana. The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor (MP) has paid special tributes to the Ghana Armed Forces for its unalloyed support for the Ministry in tne execution of its projects and initiatives aimed at protecting the environment. Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor relayed the admiration of the Ministry and government for the works by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF ) when he paid courtesy call on the Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama on Thursday, January 5, 2022. Hon. Jinapor noted that the Ministry enjoyed tremendous support from the Ghana Armed Forces in the implementation of projects such as the Green Ghana, among others. In the area of illegal mining, the Minister observed that the Ghana Armed Forces have played a frontal role in the battle and that the strides made wouldn’t have been possible without the diligent and selfless work of the Military. He, however, indicated that 2023 presents an opportunity for his outfit as well as the Military to collaborate closely and step up the fight to stamp out illegal Mining activities. He assured of the readiness of the Ministry to deepen its collaboration with the Military to not only fight illegal mining but also deal with issues in the Land and Forestry space. The Chief of Defense Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama noted that the frequent engagement initiated by the Ministry with the Armed Forces is an indicative of the premium and appreciation the Ministry places on its relationship with the Army. Twelve others including the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Champion Divine Clinic, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, and two police officers have been hauled before a High Court in Kumasi for contempt of court. The CEO and other Respondents despite a court order restraining parties in a matter of a civil suit number FAL 84/17, from taking any action on a disputed storey building at Adum in Kumasi went ahead making a transfer, renovate, etc against the Court's ruling dated 11th April 2022. According to a document available to the reporter, with all these illegalities by the CEO of Champion Divine Clinic and his cohorts, one police officer named 'ADEPA' is alleged to have constantly threatened, harassed and intimidated tenants occupying the disputed property. A motion of notice filed by an applicant Nana Gyapaa Ameyaw II, the Bepoahene and Nifahene of Agona Traditional, before the same Court by Nana Obiri Boahen, Esq, counsel for and on behalf of the Applicant herein; praying to the Court to commit the Respondents to the prison for their gross disrespect for law and order, more especially the orders of the High Court. Nana Obiri Boahen, explains that the conduct of Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, two police officers and nine others expose the administration of justice to public ridicule, and not only that but also undermines and scandalizes the Court which the Respondents must be penalised severely for their action. According to him, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong who is the 1st Respondent not being the owner of the property in dispute cannot make any valid transfer of the same to the other defendant for monetary consideration. Lawyer Obiri Boahen stated "the purported transfer was made without the consent, concurrence, authority, etc of the actual owner(s) of H/No OTB 105, Adum." The Applicants' lawyer is therefore of a strong conviction that: "following the above disposition, it is crystal clear that the defendants/respondents have no legal or equitable title in law which needs the protection from this Honourable Court." The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP, says the reconstruction of the Appiatse community in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Assembly is on schedule, and the first phase, which consists of the construction of the core community, would be completed before the end of the year. This was disclosed on Wednesday, 4th January, 2023, after the Minister led a delegation from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Committee to inspect the progress of work in the community. The Appiatse community was razed down on Thursday, 20th January, 2022, when a truck carrying explosives to a mining site exploded in the community. About thirteen (13) people are reported to have died from the incident, with several others sustaining different degrees of injuries. A Government delegation, led by the Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mamamudu Bawumia, visited the community shortly after the incident, and committed to settle the medical bills of all the injured. The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, following investigations into the matter, imposed a fine of Six Million US Dollars (US$6,000,000.00) on Maxxam Ghana Limited, the company responsible for the transportation of the explosives. A Health and Safety Committee, chaired by the Vice Chancellor of George Paa Grant University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Prof. Richard Amankwah, was also established to review the health and safety standards in the mining industry, which led to some reforms in the industry. Government, also, promised to reconstruct the Appiatse community into a modern, green and sustainable community as a model for rural development. An Appiatse Support Fund was thus established to, among others, support the reconstruction of the community, while temporary accommodation was provided for the victims of the incident. As the first anniversary of the incident approaches, the Minister visited the community to inspect the progress of work and assure members of the community of Government’s continuous support. Briefing the Minister and the Delegation, the Project Architect, Mr. Walter Semordzi, said the first phase of the project consists of the construction of one hundred of twenty-four (124) housing units made up of two to seven bedroom houses, a school block with sanitary facilities, and the construction of roads within the community. He said so far, one hundred and six (106) out of the one hundred twenty-four (124) housing units are under construction and are at different stages of completion. A kindergarten and six-unit classroom block are also under construction, while the Department of Urban Roads have commenced work on the construction of the roads in the community. He said the first phase of the project is about thirty percent (30%) complete, and its on schedule to be completed within time. Speaking to the media after the inspection, Mr. Jinapor expressed satisfaction with the progress of the work. He said the preoccupation of any responsible Government, following such tragic incident, was to provide emergency relief to support victims, investigate the matter and apply the necessary sanctions, and reconstruct the community to give the victims the dignity of life they deserve. He said Government has since been committed to this process, and the victims have been provided with temporary accommodation while the reconstruction is ongoing. Mr. Jinapor said Government’s commitment is to complete the first phase of the project, and move the victims back to the community before the end of year. He said social amenities required for a decent living, such as electricity and portable water, will be provided for the community as well. He assured of Government’s commitment to develop the community in accordance with the master plan, which include other facilities such as market and parks. He called on the general public to continue to donate to the Appiatse Support Fund to raise enough money to expedite the reconstruction of the project. The Divisional Chief of Bepo, Nana Atta Kojo Brembi, thanked the Minister and Government for the support given them since the unfortunate incident. He said the condition of most of the victims would have been miserable without Government support. He lauded the decision of Government to reconstruct the community and pledged their continuous support to Government to complete the reconstruction. He also pleaded with Government to continue to support some of the victims who can no longer work due to the degree of injury sustained. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has underscored the need for Ghana to make a systematic and conscious effort towards self-sufficiency. According to him, developing Ghana’s self-sufficiency and its food security was one major challenge. However, he bemoaned the fact that a lot of money was spent on importing, especially foodstuffs, into the country. “We spend a lot of our money importing foodstuffs into Ghana, and it has been going on for too long. And I think now is the time that we are going to have to make this systematic effort to be self-sufficient and depend on ourselves for things that we eat,” he said. President Akufo-Addo made the statement when he received a delegation of investors from Thailand, led by the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and the Honorary Consul of Ghana in Thailand, Dr. Sicha Singsomboon, on Friday, December 30, 2022, at the Jubilee House, the seat of government. The delegation, who comprised some twenty (20) investors, were in Ghana to cement a Ghana-Thailand Rice Project being spearheaded by the JGC, and to also explore other possibilities of investing in Ghana’s agriculture sector. The President expressed excitement at the partnership and collaboration between Ghana and Thailand in the rice sector. “Countries like yours [Thailand] and others have done it. And if you have done it, others can also follow and emulate your example. And I am excited by the idea of getting into bed with people who are known to have succeeded,” he expressed. In learning from Thailand, President Akufo-Addo was upbeat that Ghana will be moving towards a system of agricultural inputs that will reduce its dependence on agricultural chemicals imported from countries such as Russia and Ukraine. “…and now we are going to be dealing with organic fertilisers, which is better for our soil, better for our pockets and generally as environmentally friendly and conducive than what we have been using up till today,” he noted. “And if we are able to develop that here in Ghana, it will mean that we would not have to worry ourselves importing inorganic fertilisers from Ukraine and Russia so too much and be dependent on others,” he said. He, therefore, tasked the Thai investors to endeavour to have some concrete understandings and arrangements with the various stakeholders in Ghana’s rice sector and agriculture industry in general. He explained that this would bring forth a roadmap on how the two countries will grow and develop this relationship. “But it is something that will be extremely beneficial to our country. We want to be able to work very closely with you to achieve our common goals. You have your new market to develop, and we also have our development that makes sense for our future. So let’s hold hands and do something profitable for you and for us,” President Akufo-Addo stressed. Earlier, the delegation paid courtesy visits to the Ministers of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta; Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey; Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, and; Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen. As part of efforts to make Ghana an exporter of rice, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has appealed to investors in Thailand to come and invest in Ghana’s rice sector. He said Ghana has huge potential for rice production which is evident in its favourable climatic conditions, availability of arable lands and an open society with a vibrant democracy. Dr. Afriyie Akoto made the appeal when a delegation of investors from Thailand, led by the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and the Honorary Consul of Ghana in Thailand, Dr. Sicha Singsomboon, paid a courtesy call on him at the ministry on Friday, December 30, 2022. He said Ghana can boast of about 40,000 hectares of land readily available to support large scale rice production, hence encouraged the Thai investors to take advantage of it and invest in the sector. In addition, he assured the delegation of the government of Ghana’s support for investors in the rice industry. “Our rice production is seasonal, and, therefore, we want action targeted at planting rice in April, May June, assuring that “we will make sure that land is made available to you,” he asserted. He said it was his ministry’s target to make Ghana self-sufficient in rice production, which has seen some significant gains. However, he added that more needed to be done to bridge the deficit. On this score, Dr. Afriyie Akoto charged the Thai delegation to bring an action programme to his ministry for consideration. He asserted that the intervention by the private sector in the rice industry was very crucial, noting that it will help in the government’s vision of commercialising the commodity. The Jospong Group of Companies’ (JGC) decision to invest in the rice sector has been hailed as a ‘great booster’ towards the government’s vision of ensuring that Ghana becomes a net exporter of rice. According to the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, this decision by JGC was not only ‘timely’ but more importantly, illustrates the genius of a Ghanaian entrepreneur, “and we commend Dr. Siaw Agyepong for that.” “We will back this decision with the various government inter-ministerial financial support in a pragmatic way so that we can encourage more people to take this position that you have taken,” he gave a firm assurance. Mr. Ofori-Atta made the observation when a delegation of investors from Thailand, led by the Executive Chairman of the JGC, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and the Honorary Consul of Ghana in Thailand, Dr. Sicha Singsomboon, paid a courtesy visit to the Finance Minister on Friday, December 30, 2022. The association and collaboration between JGC and Thailand rice industry, he continued, was in the right direction, adding that it should trigger transformation of Ghana’s rice sector. “We shall become exporters of rice and not importers within the period of three years and that is a commitment,” the finance minister optimistically expressed. Furthermore, he entreated the partners in the Ghana-Thailand rice project to ensure that the collaboration advances production, intensive research, and the knowledge that Thailand brings. “It should also provide value addition and market linkages and self-sustained models,” he added. To this end, Mr. Ofori-Atta assured the project of government’s strong support to ensure its success. “We are resolute and determined to catalyse the operations of businesses such as Jospong Group of Companies to propel the economic transformation and growth of our country,” he underscored. In the firm view of the finance minister, it was so criminal that for Ghana to have so much arable lands, water, and favourable weather conditions, yet continue to import over two billion dollars worth of rice. “Since 2017, we’ve spent over a million dollars importing rice. What’s more embarrassing, is that a country like Ukraine exports about 74 million tons of grains despite the current conflict, and you wonder why Ghana and Africa have fallen asleep,” he lamented. He, therefore, pointed out that this trend must be curtailed, indicating that this was not the legacy the Akufo-Addo-led government would want to leave. “So let’s continue to promote the private sector leadership and ensure that this becomes a thing of the past.” He stressed that the Ghana Cares Obaatanpa programme is one key initiative by the government to mitigate the current economic challenges bedveilling the country. It’s the vision of President Akufo-Addo to use a well-capitalised development bank to push such initiatives, he noted. In a brief remark, the Executive Chairman of the JGC, Dr. Siaw Agyepong, said venturing into rice production needed skills and the technical knowledge to increase yields, thus the need to woo investors with the right experience and mechanical assets into Ghana. From the ministry of finance, the Thai delegation called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, where the latter assured them of her ministry’s full support to ensure the successful implementation of the project. She was particularly excited to hear the delegation of Thai investors have plans to set up an organic fertiliser plant in Ghana. The Honorary Consul of Ghana in Thailand, Dr. Sicha Singsomboon, has given a firm assurance that her country was ready to support Ghana in its quest to commercialise rice production. She said Thailand’s support for Ghana in rice production will come in the form of transfer of technology, seed development, packaging to increasing yields. She gave the assurance on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at a reception dinner organised by the Jospong Group of Companies, for a delegation of investors from Thailand. The dinner was aimed at welcoming the Thailand delegation for the commencement of the Ghana-Thailand rice collaboration project. According to Dr. Sicha Singsomboom, it will be her joy to see Ghana upscale her rice production, intimating that Ghana has the potential in that regard. She said not only will the collaboration between the two countries lead to increase in rice production, but also will provide Ghanaians involved in agriculture some technical know-how. The Advisor to the Honorary Consul, Thailand and Project Director, Dr. Vinnie Kumsomboon, said as part of the project, some Ghanaian agriculture students would be sponsored to Thailand to learn Thailand’s way of growing rice to enhance production. Earlier, in a welcome address, the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, stressed that the partnership was a dream come true. He allayed fears of market players, saying that “Jospong is not going to re-invent the wheel but rather to augment rice production in Ghana." Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that by the middle of June, there would be restrictions on the importation of fruit juice, poultry, rice amongst others. He noted that this was also highlighted in the 2023 budget statement by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta. "And so we at Jospong took up the challenge. As an entrepreneur, what we look out for is solving problems so we visited rice farms, rice mills, seed development centres, rice research centres, technical institutions and the Thailand Exim Bank who has promised to offer a whopping $160 million to support the project,” he disclosed. He said the trip gave birth to the Asia-Africa Cooperation Company in Thailand, which led in the signing of a memorandum of understanding to ensure that wherever possible in Ghana, rice should be produced provided water is available. “The idea of Jospong in the rice sector is not to compete but to support the production of rice in the country," he affirmed. According to him, teams have been formed who have toured all the 16 regions of Ghana to ascertain the form of technical know-how to transfer. Present at the event was the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, Yaw Frimpong Addo, who pledged his ministry's readiness to support in every form necessary to realise the Ghana-Thailand rice project. The Ghana Police Service says it has instituted 27th December every year as Prophecy Communication Compliance Day. The day, according to the Service, is to remind all to practice their faith within the confines of the law to ensure a safe, secure environment, free of anxiety generated from predictions of impending harm, danger, or death. This was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Chief Superintendent Grace Ansah-Akrofi as a reminder to all, especially faith-based organisations that the law on the communication of prophecies is still in force. The law the statement reiterated prohibits the public communication of doomsday prophecies, particularly of deaths and harm and similar ones with the potential to lead to the breakdown of law and order. “A year ago today, December 27, 2021, the Ghana Police Service drew the attention of the general public, especially members of the religious community to the law regarding the communication of prophecies and urged compliance to the law to ensure continuous security and law and order in the country,” the statement read in part. The Management of Ghana Water Company Limited, Accra West Region says there will be a shut down of the Weija Water Treatment in order to carry out an emergency repairs works. According to the GWCL, the exercise which is scheduled for Wednesday, December 28 will start from 9am to 5 pm. The GWCL added that the the emergency repair works will lead to an interruption in water supply. It is emerging that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has requested for a shut down of the Weija Water Treatment Plant to enable them carry out emergency repair works on the underground cable feeding the Treatment Plant. The area to be affected include; Kasoa, Nyanyano, Tuba, Amanfrom, Bortianor, Weija, Tetegu, Gbawe, Mallam, Dansoman, Mamprobi and Korle-Bu. Others areas are Mataheko, Awudome Estates, Kwashiman, Awoshie, Tesano, Abeka, North Kaneshie, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Dakuman, Sowutuom, Santamaria, and adjoining communities.
