Leadership of the largest opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is taking all legitimate and legal steps to pave way for the Presidential and Parliamentary primaries scheduled for May 13. The party’s General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey made these known in a release sighted by Thinknewsonline.com. He said "The National Democratic Congress (NDC), further to a court action on the part of one of the presidential aspirants, wishes to assure presidential, parliamentary aspirants as well as members, supporters, and sympathizers, that the party is taking all legitimate and legal steps to pave way for the presidential and parliamentary primaries on Saturday, May 13, 2023" He urged party members and people of Ghana to remain calm as it is through its legal team, workinv to resolve the temporary challenge. It will be recalled that Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, one of the three presidential aspirants, on Tuesday filed a suit against the party seeking to injunct the primaries. "While urging calm among our rank and file, we wish to assure that the party as at April 20th, 2023 had made available the full Delegates List to all presidential candidates in line with our commitment stated in our guidelines that, this Primary Document, would be furnished to all presidential candidates" The party says it is therefore confident that, the temporary challenge will be quickly overcome to pave way for the holding of the primaries on schedule. The depths the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have plumbed and still they continue to drag themselves lower is hilarious to say the least. Justifiably, the NDC have long since abandoned even the slightest pretence of trying to look better, nor speak anything remotely truthful. Their sole goal is to appease their cult leader, John Mahama and lie all they can while they can. Sadly, for the NDC, one of their own, Dr Kwabena Duffuor isn't playing with his presidential bid. Duffuor has formally injuncted the NDC presidential primaries slated for Saturday, 13th May, 2023. The charges against the NDC as alleged by Dr Kwabena Duffuor includes the inability of the party to compile accurate voter's register for the elections. Dr Kwabena Duffuor is also accusing the NDC leadership of siding with Mahama to desecrate the integrity of the party's internal election process. This is incredible. Isn't it? Mahama is out there promising to come back and govern compassionately with integrity, and accountability. And yet he's supervising corruption and rigging machinery regarding the NDC's intra-party elections? How can these NDC people run a country if they can't analyse, compile and put together a solid election data and their own internal collation system? Is the inaccuracies, the impersonation and the bloted register of the NDC's own intra-party elections that Dr Duffuor is accusing them of, a dress rehearsal for election 2024? Is this what the NDC is planning for election 2024? First, it it was their inability to collate their own election results and now the compilation of a mere party register has exposed their incompetence. What exactly is the Mahama NDC planning to offer Ghanaians? In fact, I have never doubted the NDC's incompetence, and their insistence on not following the rules of engagement regarding their own elections really jumps at me. It also shows a fundamental disdain for the concept of accountability. If the NDC as a political organisation can do this to themselves in their intra-party elections, do they expect the Electoral Commission(EC) to be fair to them in the run up to election 2024? Can the NDC accuse the EC of electoral malfeasance and corruptible conduct when the party is trapped in the same scheme in its own backyard all in an attempt to give Mahama an undue advantage over other candidates? What is the point of intra-party politics and leadership if they can't even publicly correct the record when they are wrong? When you think about it, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The malaise and the incompetence goes deeper – to the absence of a purpose beyond clearing up the mess they have found themselves in. If the Mahama NDC has a vision of what to achieve in government, its fulfilment lies across a slurry pit filled with the incompetence in handling their internal elections. Quite frankly, the NDC have no answers to anything which benefits society. What they have are prompts from paid agitators on how to harness the necessary lying propaganda so that the self-serving mendacious egos of Mahama and friends are voted for by the duped and the deluded. The Greek philosopher Plato once said that worse than an absence of direction is the loss of any sense of direction. That is exactly the crisis that the NDC has found itself in. They have no sense of direction and desperately trying to stay relevant by engaging in theatrics. It’s time we got rid of these shysters permanently. President Akufo-Addo says the protection and preservation of Ghana's natural resources requires an all-hands-on-deck approach. The President made these remarks while speaking at a Natural Resources Stakeholders Dialogue held in Accra. Addressing a gathering, President Akufo-Addo said "Fellow Ghanaians, I do not say these to shirk the responsibility of Government, but to emphasise that the protection and preservation of our natural resources requires all-hands-on-deck approach" He noted that these resources have the potential to transform Ghana and indeed the continent. "As many of you may be aware, for several years, the extractive sector has been the largest tax base of our country, apart from providing thousands of employment to several young men and women" "The truth, however, is that, over the years, we have not benefited, optimally, from these resources, due to our overdependence on the export of raw products. There is no gainsaying that the real value of the natural resources sector lies in value addition" "The global aluminium industry, for example, from bauxite mining, through alumina smelting and aluminium production, is estimated to be in excess of One Hundred and Eighty Billion US Dollars (US$180,000,000,000.00). But raw bauxite accounts for only seven point six six percent (7.6%) of this market, while the remaining ninety-two point three four percent (92.4%) is generated from processed bauxite" "This is not different from gold, iron ore, manganese, diamond, cobalt, or lithium. Indeed, currently, African countries involved in the production of lithium are said to be making just about ten percent (10%) of the entire value chain of the electric battery industry" He also revealed that his Government has prioritised local content and local participation, as well as value addition in the natural resources sector to ensure that it derive optimal benefits from these God-given resources. "Through the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), established in 2018, we are working to ensure value addition to our bauxite resources, through refining, smelting, aluminium production, as well as production of other downstream aluminium products" "I have been briefed that the Four Project Agenda of GIADEC, which I launched in 2021, is progressing steadily, with Project 2, 3 and 4 approved by Cabinet and are at different stages of implementation. Project one is still under negotiations, and will soon be put before Cabinet" Presidebt Akufo-Addo further mentioned that the implementation of the Four Project Agenda is expected to optimise production in the upstream industry, and spur production and job creation in the downstream sector. With an estimated bauxite resource base of over nine hundred million metric tonnes (900,000,000Mt), he was hopeful that the sector can serve as an anchor for industrialisation if it continues to pursue value-added policies. "We are doing the same with our iron ore resources, through the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC), initiated in 2019. With global automotive giants such as, Toyota, Nissan, Volkswagen, Suzuki and Sinotruck, all established here in our country, developing an integrated iron and steel industry, along with an integrated aluminium industry, is not just desirable, but necessary for the development we yearn for" "By section 28 of the GIADEC law, and section 30 of the GIISDEC law, the Minister for Mines is empowered to make Regulations to ensure that no bauxite or iron ore in their raw state are exported out of the country after five years of the coming into force of these laws. With the policies and other measures we are putting in place, we intend to invoke these provisions of our laws, and very soon, bauxite and iron ore will not be exported in their raw state from the country. We will ensure that the highest value of these minerals are retained in our country" "We cannot forget lithium and the other green minerals, which have been described as the minerals of the future, due to their importance to the green energy transition. Fortunately, for us, we have discovered lithium in commercial quantities, and occurrences of cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, zinc and chromium in parts of our country" "We cannot do with these minerals, what we have done with our gold resources over the years. I am happy to learn that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is finalising a policy document for the exploitation, utilisation and management of these crucial minerals for the consideration of Cabinet in the few weeks ahead of us" President Akufo-Addo assured the gathering that his government will do whatever it takes to ensure that the exploitation and utilisation of these green minerals are done in an environmentally-sound manner, and in a way that ensures optimal benefit to the people of Ghana. "We have, through a Public Private Partnership, established a Four Hundred Kilogrammes per day capacity refinery, to refine the gold we produce. Work is progressing steadily on securing a London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Certification to be able to easily trade our refined gold on the international market" "Today, I open this dialogue not to discuss just illegal small scale mining, instead, the broader consequential issue of how we exploit utilise and manage the natural resources of our nation, and particularly, I should say, what has been described as the Green Minerals, the minerals of the future, in order to harness these resources for our sustainable collective good" President Akufo-Addo reminded tye gathering that the importance of natural resources to humankind cannot be overemphasised. "Our everyday lives, depend, one way or the other, on our natural resources. Today, most of the things we use, from electricity to smart phones to the vehicles we drive, are derived from our natural resources" He hinted that the lives and livelihoods of millions of its citizens depend on these natural resources. "Undoubtedly, our continent is blessed with a lot of natural resources. After centuries of exploitation, Africa still holds some thirty percent (30%) of the world’s mineral reserves, and even higher proportions of gold, diamond, bauxite and manganese. But the contribution of these resources to our socio-economic development has been somewhat awful. With all these resources, we should have been the richest continent in the world. The irony, however, is that African remains the poorest continent on the planet" "Recent data from the World Bank shows that some sixty percent (60%) of the world's extreme poor live in sub-Saharan Africa, with most resource-rich countries on our continent being among the poorest in the world, including countries that hold huge deposits of iron ore, diamonds, bauxite and the largest rutile reserves in the world; the largest producer of cobalt, second largest producer of industrial diamonds, and fifth largest producer of copper; as well as the world’s largest reserves of bauxite" "Worst of all, many of the areas where these resources are found appear to be among the most deprived areas in the world. In our country for example, Obuasi, which, for years, hosted the richest gold mine in the world, remains largely underdeveloped. The story is no different from other areas such as Tarkwa, Prestea, Wassa, and Bibiani, which have for centuries been the attraction for adventurers and fortune seekers" On his part, the Managing Director of Graphic Communications Group Limited, Ato Afful said "This centre of planet earth, is endowed with an abundance of natural resources; including arable lands, forests, water bodies, minerals etc. However, these resources are in the main finite and require proactive measures to nurture and protect them for our collective good today, and importantly, the next generation; living and unborn, as our forbears graciously did for us" He noted that the natural resources, and associated extractive industries, have been critical in the national revenue base, and instrumental to national progress likewise development over the years. He stressed that Ghana is noted for its abundant natural resources, which include gold, diamonds, bauxite, manganese, lithium ore, and until recently, abundant hardwood timber" The MD of GCGL noted that the mining sector has played an important part in the country's economic development, supplying jobs to people and revenue to government to support other initiatives. "However, the excessive, unrestrained, unbridled and unrepentant extraction and use of natural resources has resulted in irreparable damage, in some instances, to our environment and other disasters" "Illegal mining, in particular, has had a negative impact on the environment, with associated impact on deforestation, excessive water pollution, and the destruction of natural habitats, fauna and flora" "Illegal mining, a function of poor land usage, costs the government money and eventually harms the country's economic progress and international brand reputation. The impact of illegal mining, or “Galamsey”, as has become known in our local parlance, on our environment and public health, is enormous and cannot be overlooked for much longer" "Much has been said. A lot has been done, and achieved. We need to filter and distill the thoughts put forth into concrete implementation plans through a multi-stakeholder and national action plan that we can measure and evaluate over a defined period. This is a collective responsibility. Under the mandate of government, and the rule of law" "Your Excellency, as a progressive nation and well-meaning people, we can not, will not and shall not ignore the evolving menace of unregulated and uncoordinated illegal mining, and indiscriminate land acquisition and use" Stressing on some primary considerations, Mr. Afful said "ecure a more sustainable future, we must approach natural resource management more holistically. This will entail balancing economic progress, environmental conservation, and social welfare with our revenues, and growth/developmental aspirations. We must collaborate to develop novel solutions that support sustainable production and consumption trends" "Ensure that mining and other land use activities, are carried out in a responsible and sustainable manner that considers the preservation of the environment as well as the well-being of our people" "Promote sustainable growth and protect the environment; we the people, must collaborate with government, civic society, and all commercial interests in our extraction and use of natural resources" Mr. Afful charged the gathering to commit to taking action, learning from what has been done over time, and make a difference for the environment, communities, and future. Taking his turn, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor touted the Akufo-Addo administration for reviving some mines in the country. "Through the intervention of President Akufo-Addo, the Obuasi Mine was brought back to life in 2019" "The Bibiani mine which had been dormant for some seven years was also revived last year" He stressed that these measures have contributed immensely to Ghana's gold output and growth of the national economy. He noted that gold accounts for more 40% of Ghana's total receipt. "Today gold alone accounts for more than 40% of our total national receipt but we are not relaxing" "Mr. President, Hon. Ministers, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, while it is the responsibility of Government, through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, to regulate and manage the utilisation of these resources, we understand the important role other stakeholders play in the discharge of this mandate. The woman behind the viral 'Father Bernard' video, has finally explained the reasons behind her actions. Madam Comfort Baaba Basiwa Jackson has revealed that the late Priest was all she had. Speaking an interview with an Accra-based online portal, she said "Late Father Bernard was God sent and he took care of me and my late father before his demise" "He has helped me in many ways and he was all I had" "After my father died, Father Bernard did not give up on me and still took care of me" She further explained that Late Father Bernard prayed for me most times and also helped her go through a heart break. The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has rendered an apology to the good people of Ghana following the recent intermittent power supply. According to GRIDCO, the challenge was as a result of generational challenge which was out of its control Head of Corporate  Communications, GRIDCo, Dzifa Bampoh said "The situation was a result of a generational challenge that is out of the control of GRIDCo" "Sincerely, we apologize for the erratic power supply that many Ghanaians may have suffered for the last couple of days.” She further explained that GRIDCo is a transmitter and not a generator. She stressed that GRIDCo has a view of what the generation is like adding that, it s the generation coming from its power plants whether they are hydro, thermal even solar. “Unfortunately, there has been a shortfall in generation capacity, meaning we have not been able to generate as much power as Ghanaians demand. “That is out of the control of GRIDCo and it is partly because we don’t have enough gas coming in to power some of these plants." Information reaching Thinknewsonline.com indicates that some ten children have drowned when a boat carrying them from school capsized. The unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday at Faana in the Weija Gbawe Municipality, Accra. It is emerging that the incident occurred around 5pm Some residents alleged that the boat which was carrying the children capsized as a result of the spillage of the Weija Dam. The Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has revealed that his Ministry, through the Access to Information (ATI) Division, and in consultation with the RTI Commission, is working to operationalise an Online Records Management System (ORMS) to enable applicants to apply for information online. This, he said, will also aid information officers in keeping accurate records, and increase efficiency. Addressing Journalists in Accra on Wednesday, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said "This unique platform, which has been developed in accordance with Section 18 of the RTI Act, 2019, will not only digitize the application and processing of RTI requests but will also transform records management across public institutions in the country" He noted that the Draft Legislative Instrument for the RTI ACT is currently undergoing stakeholder consultation and will be laid when Parliament resumes. "The RTIC and the ATI Division will embark on continuous public sensitisation campaigns in the medium to long term" Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah noted that stringent efforts must be made to fully populate the rest of the information units across public institutions with ATI Division staff. The sector Minister further cited limited cooperation from public institutions likewise resource and logistics constraints as challenges.. On general comments, he stressed that the access to information requests have increased over the three years of implementation of the Act "Despite this significant increase in the number of requests, rejected requests remain low. ATID provides the technical support to public institutions to enable them fulfill their obligations in granting access to information. When institutions take advantage of this, they avoid any compliant issues. The RTIC is fully backed by law to sanctions institutions that do not comply. Additionally it has prosecutorial powers from the AG to prosecute offenders under the Act" He hinted that the effective usage of the RTI Act will further strengthen Ghana's democracy. The Ministry says it is acknowledging the support and contribution of various stakeholders, particularly UNESCO Ghana, in ensuring the smooth take-off of this important public policy. The ECOWAS Commission has held a regional capacity building workshop for experts in member states on solar off-grid. The capacity workshop was held on May 9 at the MJ Grand Hotel, Accra. In his welcome addresss Ing. Aliu Achema, Standards Organization of Nigeria said "The step ROGEAP has taken clashed with understanding and readiness to ensure that the understanding of this standards be communicated to our member states is a great feet and we must try as representatives of our countries, we take these message back" "I want us to look at the enormous work required of us. We are representing millions of country members and it is upon us to take the message so that when we go back, we can share" "Awareness is critical and capacity building is also important because one cannot create awareness from a vacuum, you must have the knowledge" Taking his turn, Energy Policy Officer, Hyacinth Elayo hinted that issues of standards are very critical hence all need to ensure that there is a better understanding of the message shared at the capacity building workshop. He added that the ECOWAS Region is not a place for sub-standard equipment and products rather, it gives solar a bad name likewise the people involved. "In 2013, the ECOWAS Head of States dotted ambitions and policies for renewable energy, energy efficiency and the goal is to have universal access by 2030" He however described the ambitions as a daunting task stretching that ECOWAS was over a little over 50%. He added that the universal access can be achieved through quick connected solutions. He reminded the gathering that off-grid technologies have a major role to play especially for people in the rural areas Mr. Hyacinth Elayo charged the ECOWAS Commission to intensify efforts to ensure massive deployments. On his part, Scientific Officer, Ghana Standards Authority, Francis Mensah Appaloo said "Standards are very important for every country when we enforce standards and labels on products, it helps boost the confidence of the people" He added that standards create good playgrounds for businesses to compete fairly and creates awards for members to identify which products are sub standards and also acceptable. He added that standards boost confidence on consumers since they have not wasted their monies on products and services they want to enjoy. ROGEAP Coordinator, Elhadji Sylla who read on behalf of ECOWAS Commission said "The Project is framed in the ECOWAS Program on Access to Sustainable Electricity Services (EPASES), directly contributing to the goals of the ECOWAS Regional Renewable Energy Policy (EREP) with a target to provide universal access to electricity to the region by 2030" He hinted that the project covers ECOWAS REGION and Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic and Mauritania. ECOWAS Commission is the Technical Implementing Agency and Banque Ouest Africaine de Développement (BOAD) acts as the Financial Intermediary Agency. To improve the access to electricity in the Region and Sahel Countries, the project will identify policy barriers affecting the growth of the stand-alone solar market, create awareness among the government policy makers on the benefit of removing such policy barriers, and provide targeted support to remove barriers in challenging markets. It will also help the countries adopt the Common External Tariffs (CETs) to facilitate cross-border trade of standalone solar products. "Develop a regional quality assurance framework to facilitate supply of eligible stand-alone solar products across the 19 project countries" "Build human capital and increase entrepreneurial activity by providing training to develop adequate and required skills through a structured entrepreneurship development facility, which will ensure reliable service to the beneficiaries and create employment opportunities at the local level" The Regional Capacity Building Workshop aims to enforce capacities on the two standards related to solar PV off-grid products up 350 Wp (IEC TS 62257-9-8:2020 and IEC TS 62257-9-5:2018 – first one concern products and the second concerns testing methods of the products). During this next three day, the experts will cover technical and administrative aspects. "General and specific aspect on the two standards, conformity assessment on solar off grid system, market surveillance and enforcement and enforcement, application of standards, communication, and monitoring and evaluation activities relating to the products, solar PV off-grid system up to 350 watts, and their testing methods in the laboratory" The organisers expresed gratitude to the World Bank, Clean Technology Fund and the Government of the Netherlands as the sponsor of ROGEAP as well the trainers and to ECREEE. Kickboxing is changing the face of sport in Ghana and beyond as it offers numerous golden opportunities to people with high interest in making good name for themselves and their country. The sport in many ways has taken children from the street, from becoming drug addicts and dangerous to the society of which Ghana is off no exception. In recent past, Kickboxing has seen massive growth with several championship and seminars held for it Federation with the vision of developing the sport. In Ghana, it is known as the International Kickboxing Federation-PKB with its headquarters situated in the Capital, Accra. Ahmed Ibrahim is the President of International Kickboxing Federation- Ghana. The young fighter first made appearance in the ring in September 17, 2011 in a global championship held in Togo and has since moved away from an amateur to a professional kickboxer and won glory for Ghana. Darku, engaged in the 2012 Championship in Nigeria before appearing in the 2016 tournament in Ivory Coast, four years later. In March, 30 2019 he made the squad for the Nigeria championship where he did not disappoint but won a medal for IKF Pkb. Selom won his last fight in Lome, Togo where he was awarded a medal. Famous Alfred Emmanuel Adjartey Adjartey popularly known as ‘Kila’ in the ring has likewise shown character with his extraordinary talent, Weight 65kg, he has fight record of 14-0-0(12 KO).
