The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) is on a manhunt for some four fraudsters alleged to be involved in sim swap fraud. According to EOCO, in early part of 2022, it received intelligence that there was a syndicate of fraudsters targeting the local banks in the country and stealing funds from their customers’ accounts. in a communique issued by EOCO, it said "The modus operandi of the fraudsters is via fraudulent swap of the mobile numbers of the customers of the banks" "This fraudulent swap causes the customers mobile numbers to be inactive whiles the same numbers are activated on the fraudsters’ sim cards enabling them to access and control the customers’ bank account and steal funds in the account" EOCO added that another modus operandi of these fraudsters is to act as Bank officials and social engineer customers to divulge their phone numbers, password, pin code and One Time Password (OTP). It added that after having access to the information, these fraudsters take over the mobile banking application of the customers’ thereby enabling them to fraudulently withdraw funds from the accounts. In April 2022, EOCO in collaboration with Ghana Association of Bankers and the Ghana Police Service identified and arrested some of the perpetrators, who were mostly based in Assin Fosu. Amongst those arrested, two (2) have been convicted at the High Court and are serving their sentence at Nsawam Prison. "Others identified to be part of the syndicate are still at large, thus Derrick Obeng aka Chilling, Nicholas Gyekye aka Payges, Ezekiel Otoo and Frederick Anzi Quainoo, alias Kakra" The above perpetrators are estimated to have stolen a total of over GH¢2,000,000.00 from the accounts of various customers of the banks. The Black Princesses gave their WAFU B U20 Cup of Nations tournament preparation a huge boost after thrahsing Niger 11-0 in a friendly on Wednesday morning. A hat-trick from Stella Nyamekye and braces from Faiza Seidu and Mafia Nyame as well as strikes from Tracy Twum, Helen Alormenu and Mary Amponsah ensured free-scoring Ghana secured a huge win. The Black Princesses got off to a great start after Maafia Nyame opened the scoring just four minutes into the game before Helen Alormenu doubled the lead eight minutes later. Stella Nyamekye increased the tally two minutes later - her first of three goals on the day - before Nyame sealed her brace in the 17th minute. Nyameke made matters worse for Niger after scoring he second in the 24th minute to make it 5-0. Faiza Seidu then scored a brace to add to Alormenu's strike as the Black Princes went into the break leading 8-0. A high-powered delegation from the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Hunan Sub-council on May 16 paid a courtesy on the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor(MP). The visit was to engage the Ministry on avenues the two countries can deepen their bilateral relations and ramp up economic and trade ties to the mutual benefit of citizens of both countries. Speaking during the visit, the Minister, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor disclosed that Ghana’s relationship with China is a great and mutually beneficial one which has gained noteworthy recognition in areas of economic trade, mineral and mining investments, education and social development. “There is a strong people-to-people relationship between Ghana and China. There are a lot of Ghanaian citizens who travel to China for all kinds of businesses and there are Chinese citizens who travel to Ghana for all kinds of businesses”, he said. The delegation from the Hunan sub-council made a presentation to the Minister and other officials of the Ministry on the various aspects of the country in which they seek to collaborate with Ghana on. The key sectors which were highlighted in the presentation include mining, healthcare, industrial growth among other things. The leader of the delegation, Zhou Shengqiao, Deputy Inspector, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Hunan Sub-Council through the presentation also outlined various means in which they can collaborate with the Ministry for the responsible and sustainable harnessing and exploitation of the country’s Natural Resources. The Minister noted with satisfaction the detailed presentation offered by the Chinese delegation to partner the Ministry in the area of natural resources exploitation and added that his outfit through the Chief Director will hold further engagement with the council. Hajia4Real was arrested abroad. US Attorney, Damian Williams said "Thanks to the efforts of our law enforcement partners, Montrage was arrested abroad and has been brought to the United States to face justice" The US Attorney also noted that as alleged, Hajia4Real was a member of a criminal conspiracy that specifically targeted older Americans through romance scams. Former President John Dramani Mahama has said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win the 2024 general elections. The newly-elected flagbearer of the NDC said the governing party must start preparing its handover notes and be prepared to render accountability for their stewardships. Delivering a formal acceptance speech after his victory in the presidential primaries of the NDC on Saturday May 13, Mr Mahama said “they must start preparing their handover notes and get ready to account to the people for their stewardship.” He added “Ours will be a progressive government that provides equal opportunities for decent and sustainable livelihoods. “By working together with Ghanaians we shall turn Ghana’s hopeless and gloom today into a better and brighter tomorrow.” He further commended the Electoral Commission (EC) for successfully supervising and conducting the presidential and parliamentary primaries of the NDC. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, left Ghana on Sunday, 14th May 2023, to lead the Ghanaian delegation for a State Visit to the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, at the invitation of its President, His Excellency Umaru Sissoco Embalo, Chairperson of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS. The purpose of the visit is to deepen further the already strong relations that exist between the two countries, as well as explore other areas of co-operation to their mutual benefit. Whilst in Guinea-Bissau, the President will hold bilateral talks with President Embalo; he will receive the Amilcar Cabral Medal, the highest national honour of Guinea-Bissau; deliver a lecture at the Law Faculty of the University of Amilcar Cabral; and interact with the contingent of Ghanaian soldiers stationed in Bissau, who are part of the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission The President was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Seven people have been confirmed dead after an illegal mining pit in which they worked caved in on them at Korle Teye (Takorso site) in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region. About 17 others remain trapped under debris as time runs out, with locals helping with rescue efforts doing so with anything they could lay hands on. According to Adom News correspondent Akwasi Dwamena, who visited the site and saw the uncoordinated rescue efforts, only two of the trapped miners had been rescued alive, albeit with injuries, while the lifeless bodies of the seven had been laid out in the open, covered only with bushes. Sista Afia took to her social media page to make the post.
