The climate crisis the President noted is affecting health, livelihoods, security and our future, and remains the major obstacle to sustainable development. And anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions continue to be the major driver of this crisis. His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo however assured that Government remains fully committed to protecting the environment and the people of Ghana and also contribute to global efforts to halt climate change. "Government will, therefore, continue to explore all avenues to enhance our forest cover through afforestation and reforestation programmes and protect our natural resources through community-based management and conservation initiatives" "We recognise that this global crisis requires collective, ambitious, and meaningful efforts from all countries. We have, therefore, committed, under our enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by some 64 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030, and enhance our resilience and adaptation to climate change, by improving early warning systems, promoting climate-smart agriculture, restoring degraded lands, and protecting coastal zones" the President stressed. The Asantehene, His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Friday, 9th June 2023 demonstrated his unwavering belief in government’s reforestation program by performing the official tree planting exercise for the third consecutive time. The Asantehene who is a Chief patron of the flagship Green Ghana project has consistently demonstrated his devotion to the laudable and life-saving project and reaffirmed his belief by kicking off the third edition of the project in the Ashanti Region. Joined by dignitaries such as the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Forestry, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio, Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Simon Osei Mensah, mayor of Kumasi, Samuel Pyne among a host of others, the highly revered King, planted the first tree of the 2023 edition at Royal Golf Course in Kumasi. Before planting his third ceremonial tree in three years, His Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II inspected the two he planted in 2021 and 2022 to ensure that they are developing well. The Asantehene who was impressed with the growth of the trees, indicated his excitement and commended the government for the project which is aimed at restoring Ghana’s forest cover, helping in the beautification of the country and creating economic value through the growth of cash crops. In a short address after planting his tree, His Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged Ghanaians to go all out and support the project as it benefits will be enjoyed by all. On his part, the Deputy Minister of Lands in charge of Forestry, commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the consistent show ‘commitment and selflessness’ to the Green Ghana project. “I wish to express my profound gratitude to His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for honoring our invitation to lead Asanteman to plant trees as part of the activities of Green Ghana Day. “Your Royal Majesty, when we also called on you to launch the 2023 Edition of the Green Ghana Day a few weeks ago you graciously accepted the invitation to despite your busy schedules and we are very grateful for your selflessness and commitment to ensure the protection and sustainable management of our natural resources,” he said. Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio appealed to the general public and institutions to make examples of Otumfuo’s dedication by coming out in their numbers to plant the trees. Stressing on the target of 10 million trees for the 2023 edition, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio indicated that seedlings having been made at various designated place and that the government will continue its aggressive drive towards the restoration of the country’s forest. “Your Royal Majesty, this year, the President of the Republic has set the national target to 10 million trees. This means, we expect to plant at least 10 million trees on this day and Asanteman has always risen to the challenge and this year will not be an exception. “The need to plant trees is very clear to us and we don’t have any option than to embark on an aggressive afforestation/reforestation drive to restore our lost vegetative cover and contribute to the global fight against climate change,” he said. Owusu-Bio also entreated the public to recognize that the tree planting exercise is not a one-day activity but a process which must lead to the full growth of the seedling. “As we plant the trees today, let us make conscious efforts to nurture and grow them to maturity. In many circumstances, what we plant are neglected and not catered for and this is the reason why the target has been reduced to nurture what has already been planted to ensure a higher survival rate,” he said. We also enjoy medicinal, nutritional and other benefits from it. We should all join it,”, he said. The Green Ghana Day was introduced in 2021, by H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo as part of an aggressive national afforestation/reforestation programme to restore the lost forest cover of Ghana and to contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change. Togbega Gabusu VII, Overlord of GBI traditional area has commended government for its initiative to plant 10 million trees as target for the 2023 Green Ghana Day. The Green Ghana initiative seeks to enhance national awareness on the necessity for collective action towards restoration of degraded landscape in the country and inculcate in youth the value of planting and nurturing trees and their associated benefits. Speaking at the ceremonial planting the Overlord of GBI an absolute support of the people of GBI to give it the necessary support as traditional authorities. It is therefore imperative for us that we ensure a sustainable management of our forest resources and fine solutions to mitigate all actions that are destroying our forest and trees. The chief described tree planting as a religious assignment and a social responsibility which every individual must engage in. “Every religious person knows the reward he stands to gain from God due to the benefit it will give to all living things in the world. It is also a social responsibility because it is through our own activities which lead to the depletion of the forest we have in the country,” the Overlord added. He said this on  Friday, 9 June, 2023 when officials from the ministry joined him and his elders during the event of the Green Ghana Day at Kitipa Stadium. He stated that depletion of our forest reserves is largely caused by human activities such as inappropriate farming activities, charcoal and Bush burning, timber logging.” He stressed that if the activities are not checked, it will continue to cause the depletion of Ghana’s forest reserves. He also commended the ministry and government as a whole for their timely intervention to plant more trees since it will go a long way to address deforestation in the forest areas of the country. On his part, the Principal planing Officer, Mr Frank  Adigbo who led a delegation to represent the Ministry encouraged the people of GBI to fully partake in the tree planting exercise which aims at restoring Ghana’s forest reserves and making Ghana green. He appealed to them not to just plant but also nurture for the trees to enhance the purpose of planting  10 million trees a reality. Benito Owusu-Bio has on Wednesday, 7th June, 2023 joined the Rotary Club to Launch a project dubbed, One Rotarian One Tree initiative under the district 9102 Green Project. Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor (MP) has called for broader collective efforts in the fight against global warming, adding that government has already taken some integral steps in that regard. Delivering the Key Note address at the 43rd Management Week Celebration of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, the Minister described climate change as posing a fundamental threat to human existence and development. “The climate crisis remains one of the most fundamental threats to our development, our survival, and the sustenance of planet Earth. Indeed, with less than 7 years to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), climate change has been identified as the most significant impediment to the realization of these goals, trapping millions of people into poverty," he noted. Hon. Jinapor highlighted Africa's position as the most susceptible to the impact of climate change, requiring an all-hands-on-deck approach to dealing with this phenomenon. "The impact of this looming disaster is already being felt across the globe in extreme weather conditions that produce hurricanes, cyclones, sea-level rise, flooding, drought, and irregular rainfall patterns, among others." "Unfortunately, here in Africa, due to the agrarian nature of our economy and our known adaptation capacities, we are more susceptible to these impacts. Thus, even though we contribute the least to this climate crisis, estimated at 4%, we bear the brunt of these adverse consequences”, he added Whiles emphasizing the impact of climate change, he reiterated the need for people of all backgrounds to join the climate fight. Giving an update on the state of affairs at the school, Prof. Bawole reported on some milestones chalked by the school, including the signing of a contract for the construction of a computer laboratory for the school, as well as the recent indictment of an 18-year-old former student of UGBS as a chartered accountant. He, however, appealed to the government to come to the aid of the school with more support to enhance teaching and learning and also help produce quality of graduate. The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor has called for a collective effort to effectively and efficiently manage the Land Borders of the country as Africa marks Africa Border Day. "Let us continue to work towards effective and efficient border management, and not make our borders barriers that divide us, but bridges that connect us and promote peace, security, and development for our nations and our continent" Delivering a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, 7th June, 2023 in commemoration of the thirteenth (13th) African Border Day, the Minister said "an efficient and effective border management is sine qua non to our noble and historic quest to provide a secured continent to enable us unleash prosperity for the long-suffering peoples of Africa" "Particularly, given that, for us here in Africa, our border lines were drawn without our consent and involvement, and without regard to our cultural, traditional and political heritage, boundary issues will remain key to our security, and peaceful coexistence" he stressed. Giving a brief background on the reason for the celebration of the day, Hon. Jinapor said the African Border Day was adopted by African Ministers in charge of Border Issues, at their second Meeting held in 2010, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to promote the importance of the African Union Border Programme (AUBP) to peace, regional, and continental integration. The African Day he said is also used to celebrate the progress Africa has made, individually as member states of the African Union, and collectively as a continent, in securing and managing boundaries of the various countries, and to forge a common path for dealing with the challenges that still lie ahead. The Minister opined that this year’s African Border Day celebration is a very significant one as it calls on all of Africa to reflect on the importance of the borders to national and regional security, stability, and sustainable development. The Minister also noted that boundaries are not just physical barriers that separate countries; they are complex systems that require effective management, coordination, and cooperation among all stakeholders. "As a continent, our efforts at promoting peace, stability, and prosperity along borders, continue to be hindered by several challenges, such as transnational organised crime, terrorism, violent extremism, smuggling and irregular migration." " It was to deal with these challenges, accelerate work on cross-border cooperation and peaceful resolution of border disputes, as well as promote efficient and effective integrated border management, that the African Union Convention on Cross-Border Cooperation (also known as the Niamey Convention), was adopted in 2014" he continued. Hon. Jinapor therefore appreciated the efforts of the Members of Parliament for their cooperation which saw to the swift ratification of the African Union Convention on Cross-Border Cooperation in the First Meeting of Third Session of this Parliament. Political Science Professor Ransford Yaw Gyampo has admonished the Special Prosecutor to tread cautiously, particularly when he is not independent after all. “The Special Prosecutor must therefore tone down on his youthful exuberance and must not be rushing to please anybody because, the office is not independent after all, from the control of politicians,” Prof Gyampo wrote on Thursday, June 8. The write-up follows the arrest and subsequent granting of bail of former Environment Minister Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). According to Prof Frimpong-Boateng, he found it strange when he honoured an invitation by the Office only to be told he was under arrest. Prof Gyampo believes the approach by the OSP is wrong as the venerable professor cannot be arrested when he had honoured the invitation extended to him. “Indeed he can be invited to assist in investigations but he cannot be arrested without being charged,” the Political Scientist wrote. “It is disrespectful and an unnecessary show of power as well as harassment to Prof Frimpong Boateng. “I am not a lawyer and I don’t want to be one but I know that Prof Frimpong Boateng could have simply been invited. If he failed to honor the invitation, then the arrest could kick in.” Prof Gyampo recalled how the first advocates of constitutional review wanted an independent prosecutor “and never a Special Prosecutor who would walk in the shadows of a partisan Attorney-General”.
