The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Lawyer Kwame Asuah Takyi has admonished officers of the Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service to let discipline be their guiding principles in their career. The CGI said this during a durbar he held with Officers and Men of the Eastern Regional Command  on the sideline of activities planned for the celebration of the 67th Independence anniversary in Koforidua. The CGI was welcomed by the Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI) Faisal Disu to the Command Headquarters, who extolled the great leadership style of the CGI which has led to the transformation of the GIS and called on him to assist the Command renovate a duty post they have established in Donkorkrom in the Affram Plains. The CGI commended the RC and called for more of such duty post to be established across the country to bring Immigration services to the door post of the citizens. He also praised the Government for the massive retooling of the Ghana Immigration Service and intimated that “in the history of the GIS no government has ever invested in the GIS than this current government  of HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.” There has been unprecedented increase in recruitment into the Service more than quadrupling the manpower base, supply of specialized vehicles for border patrols, expansion in both residential and office accommodation among others. He further informed the durbar of Government’s decision for the GIS to begin to deploy its Officers to some selected Ghana Missions abroad as Consular Officers which directive he said will be implemented very soon. Mr Asuah Takyi admonished his Officers to justify such massive support from Government by working very hard to safeguard Ghana’s borders and also contribute in strengthening internal security. The Ministry of Health (MoH) has cautioned the general public to do away with statement-making rounds in some media outlets in relation to recruiting general nursing applicants. According to the Ministry, such statements are untrue and ought to be ignored. In a statement signed by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry, it said “It has come to the notice of the Ministry of Health (MoH) that there is a public announcement dated 10th March, 2024 in the mass media (print, electronic and new) about recruitment of general nurses by the Ministry" “We wish to state categorically that the Ministry did not make the public announcement in reference and should, therefore, be ignored" “The general public is entreated to take note that the Ministry does not charge any fees for the recruitment and posting of health workers,” the statement added. The statement advised prospective applicants to refrain from making any payments to “individuals or groups” regarding the recruitment notice. The mother of the late Deputy Finance Minister and Ejisu MP, Dr John Kumah, is demanding an autopsy to settle the cause of his death. Allegations of poisoning have been rife since the late legislator fell ill and subsequently died on Thursday, March 7, 2024. Though the allegations of poisoning have been widespread, there has been no confirmation by any expert, family or any known associate of the late MP. Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on March 8 however, mother of the late MP who could not hold back her tears, said that Dr Kumah's death has brought the family so much pain. She demanded that an autopsy be performed to verify if indeed the rumours that he was poisoned were true. She wondered why anyone would wish such an end for her son, and stressed, amid wailing, that the family's backbone has been destroyed. The grieving mother repeatedly pointed to the suspicion of poisoning, and said the life of an otherwise determined young man, a youthful parliamentarian with a bright future, has been wasted in his prime. Some residents of Ejisu eulogised the late MP, saying that despite serving the country and Ejisu for less than four years, he has had a remarkable impact on the constituency. They noted that he treated every individual with personal attention, showed respect to everyone, and his outstanding works made it seem he has been around for many more years. They proclaimed his kindness and benevolent nature, relating to everyone as his mother, father, or as a sibling. Dr John Kumah, passed away aged 45 years on March 7, after a short illness. He left behind a legacy as a devoted family man, being survived by his wife, Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, and six children. Veteran actress, Grace Omaboe, affectionately called Maame Dokono, fears passing away in the same manner as the late actor Prince Yawson, also known as Waakye. The actor’s death broke her, making her fear how her death would be. “I was so devastated and didn’t know what to do. So, maybe my death will be like that,” she said. The Ghana movie industry was hit with the sad news of the passing of veteran actor Prince Yawson, popularly known as Waakye, on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, after being rushed to the 37 Military Hospital the previous night. A few days following the actor’s death, Maame Dokono revealed in an interview the cause of Waakye’s death. She said Waakye was taken to Ridge Hospital, but due to the lack of hospital beds, he was moved to the 37 Military Hospital. This, according to her, happened a week later, after they all attended a colleague’s 70th birthday party, and he looked healthy. Sharing fond memories of the characters behind the popular 'Obra' TV series, Maame Dokono, as she was called, wishes all actors, most especially Waakye and Richard Kwame Agyeman, popularly known as Odompo, would come back. The remains of the late CEO of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe, and his wife Doreen Chizoba, along with their son Chizzy, were laid to rest on Saturday, March 9, in a private mausoleum at Wigwe University in Isiokpo, Rivers State. Mourners gathered at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Isiokpo for a funeral service, followed by a burial at the family’s private tomb around 2:45 pm. The atmosphere was filled with sorrow as the caskets were lowered into the ground. The Wigwe family tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash near the California-Nevada border in the United States on February 9, 2024. Their remains arrived in Nigeria on Friday, March 8, 2024, and were transported to Port Harcourt International Airport from the US. Accompanied by a large motorcade, the remains left the airport around 1:33 pm and were taken directly to the family compound in Omueke, Isiokpo. Numerous dignitaries attended the funeral service. The passing of Wigwe and his family is a significant loss. He was a visionary leader who guided Access Bank to become a leading global financial institution. Ningo Prampram lawmaker Samuel Nartey George has said that personally, he doesn’t care if the sponsors of the anti-bay bill are punished for the passage. However, he added that if any such move is taken by countries affected by the bill, he will personally fight the business interests of that country in Ghana. Speaking on the Hot Issues on TV3 Sunday March 10, he said “I speak for myself, I don’t care. [But] if any country leads a sanction on the speaker or myself or the sponsors of the bill, I will wage a campaign in this country against all their business interests, don’t underestimate the power of the forces of Ghanaians when we say we will shut down those businesses.” His comments were after a Renowned economist Mr Kwame Pianim has appealed to the United States of America and other countries that are against the anti-gay bill, passed by Ghana’s Parliament to rather direct their anger towards the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin and all the Members of Parliament who supported the bill and got it passed. Mr Pianim explained that the bill is not a referendum that was passed by the entire country hence sanctions should not be meted out to the entire country. Speaking on the Business Focus with TV3’s Paa Kwesi Asare on Tuesday, March 5, he said “my appeal to the US  and the other countries who feel very strongly about lgbtq rights as human rights is that they should not use the instrument of sanctioning the whole country, they should put sanctions on the Speaker of Parliament, those who moved the bill and the 275 of the MPs, put sanction on them and leave the Ghana economy alone. “This is not a referendum that has been passed by the people of Ghana, we are already suffering, so don’t add any sanctions to it, sanction the people who are doing this and if these people make our problems worse, all of us Ghanaians should consider seriously,  this 8th parliament of the fourth republic, the administration none of them should receive  their gratia.” Mr Pianim further indicated that the statement that was issued by the Finance Ministry warning of the dreadful implication of the anti-lgbtqi bill came too late. In his view, the Ministry should have sent this caution to Parliament the moment discussions on the bill commenced in the House. The Ministry of Finance on Monday, March 4 pointed out dreadful implications of the president assenting to the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill. In a brief on the implications of assenting to the Bill by President Akufo-Addo, the Ministry of Finance said the country stands to lose huge financial support from the Bretton Woods institutions. “In total, Ghana is likely to lose US$3.8 billion in World Bank Financing over the next five to six years. For 2024, Ghana will lose US$600 million budget support and US$250 million for the Financial Stability Fund. This will negatively impact Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and exchange rate stability as these inflows are expected to shore up the country’s reserve position,” part of the brief cited by 3news.com reads. The Ministry of Finance provided the details as follows: The expected US$300 million financing from the First Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (Budget Support) which is currently pending Parliamentary approval might not be disbursed by the Bank when it is approved by Parliament; On-going negotiations on the second Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (DPO) for budget support amounting to US$300 million may be suspended; On-going negotiations for US$250 million to support the Ghana Financial Stability Fund may be suspended; Disbursement of undisbursed amounts totaling US$2.1 billion for ongoing projects will be suspended; and Preparation of pipeline projects and declaration of effectiveness for two projects totaling US$900million may be suspended. The Ministry cautioned that, “The potential loss of these financial resources will create a financing gap in the 2024 budget that the government must address through additional domestic revenue mobilisation and a significant reduction in expenditure.  Failing this, Government’s ability to achieve the targets in the 2024 Budget will be undermined and the IMF-ECF Programme is likely to be derailed.” Parliament on February 28 passed the Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill. But Mr Pianim said “I think that if this document is really true it shows how incompetent our administration is.  it is really shambolic. Where was the Ministry of Finance when this bill was being discussed? “Normally, when a bill is being discussed in Parliament, bills come from the government, the cabinet minister will take the document to parliament, convince his colleagues that he wants to pass this Act, and then it goes to Parliament. “The Ministry of Finance should have sent this document to the cabinet and to the president and to the relevant committees of Parliament that were discussing it to say these are the financial implications of this bill. “That is how it is done and then if the president is up to task and he is doing his job then the president will hold the breakfast meeting, invite Parliamentary leaders and say this is where the national interest is, this is the geopolitical implications of this bill and therefore think twice before you move ahead. Ghanaian musician and entertainment pundit Kwame Asare Obeng, known as A Plus, has added his voice to Ghana's anti-LGBTQ+ bill. He said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will not assent to the controversial anti-LGBTQI bill because of Ghana's dependence on foreign aid which he said is a major obstacle to achieving true independence. A-Plus emphasised that Ghana's dependence on financial assistance from developed nations undermines its sovereignty adding that until Ghana develops strong domestic policies, the Western countries will maintain their influence and control over the nation. "Akufo-Addo cannot assent to the bill due to Ghana's dependence on foreign aid. Without financial support from the international community, Ghana struggles to achieve true independence," he stated. A Plus added: "Whether Ghana likes it or not, the anti-LGBTQ+ bill would not be passed. We are bound to accept Western culture as long as we remain dependent on foreign aid." This legislation passed in Parliament on February 28, 2024, criminalizes LGBTQ activities and prohibits their promotion, advocacy, and funding. Those found guilty could face a jail term of 6 months to 3 years, while promoters and sponsors of the act may incur a 3 to 5-year jail sentence. In the wake of growing concerns from the diplomatic community and international organizations regarding the anti-LGBT+ bill, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo sought to allay fears while reaffirming Ghana's commitment to human rights. He assured the international community that Ghana has no intentions of regressing on its commitment to human rights, despite the passage of the controversial bill. The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Caucus of Constituency Chairmen has called on the Ghana Police Service and National Security to arrest individuals who have publicly claimed they know about the death of John Kumah, former Deputy Finance Minister, to assist in investigations. In a statement dated Monday, March 11, and signed by its secretary, Abraham Kofi Oduro-Kyeremateng, the Caucus stated, amongst other things, that the claims by certain individuals in the media space have “come far ahead of an official autopsy report from the medical team.” Hence, the Caucus considers the actions “criminal allegations,” which must be investigated by the security agencies. “First of all, we think these are criminal allegations and the Ghana Police Command and National Security must seek proof of the alleged poisoning immediately. “Individuals and groups who have publicly claimed to know anything about the death of Hon. John Ampontuah Kumah must be arrested to assist the Police in their investigation into these claims which have come far ahead of an official autopsy report from the medical team,” the statement added. Adwenpa Band – an 11-piece Ghanaian afro pop, funk, highlife, reggae, pop, afro jazz band is set to capture live band lovers with the release of their ‘Enko Enja Me’ album. The album which beautifully encapsulates the journey of Ghana’s Highlife music will be officially launched in July, at the Alliance Francaise, near Airport City. The team will also inaugurate the band on the same day. It will be a night of good music, an eclectic display of talent, performances from other top artistes in the industry, including Epixode, Trigmatic, among others. The leader of Adwenpa Band, Daniel Antwi, promises that the night will be a celebration of Ghana’s rich musical heritage, showcasing the vibrancy and talent of Adwenpa Band.
