Fire has gutted some parts of the Madina market. According to sources, the fire started at about 9pm on Wednesday night. About 50 shops were affected by the fire. The Madina division of the Ghana Fire Service were said to have rushed to the scene and helped quenching the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. No casualities were recorded. Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Gbande has made serious allegations concerning the disappearance of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) in Ghana. The Executive Director of the Africa Center for Health Policy Research and Analysis, Dr. Thomas Anaba, has disclosed that the locked-up medical supplies donated by the Global Fund have led to a surge in tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS cases. The supplies which include antiretroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS patients and mosquito nets for pregnant women have been held at the Tema Port since July 2023 over import duties. Global Fund suspended further shipments of essential medical supplies due to the delays in clearing these goods. Dr. Anaba told Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM that a major widespread of tuberculosis, malaria, and AIDS looms in comparison to last year’s figures. “There is an increase in the cases of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS from last year’s figure, and the complications of people dying from AIDS has also increased. Women getting malaria during pregnancy has increased because of this.” He suggested that Ghana should communicate the quantity of supplies needed ahead of time to the Global Fund and make budgetary allocations for clearance to avert future delays. “Ghana has the statistics of how many people get tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS every year and this can be planned with a top-up percentage of 10 percent and then we can budget for how much of these drugs that we need and then we contact Global Fund on how much they can give us ahead of time and then we budget for money to clear the drugs.” Credit: Citinewsroom

The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has refuted claims of a supposed takeover by Sentuo Oil Refinery, following allegations of a meeting to discuss the sale of the national refinery to the Chinese-owned private oil refinery. ASEPA’s Executive Director, Mensah Thompson in a statement on Monday, April 8, alleged that there was a meeting between TOR management and Sentuo Oil Refinery Ltd to discuss the sale of the national refinery. But TOR in a statement on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, emphasized that no talks have taken place regarding the sale and no ceremony has been planned to mark Sentuo’s acquisition of TOR. TOR explained that Sentuo currently pays them to store some of its crude oil in the refinery’s storage tanks and when Sentuo is ready to refine the crude oil, TOR pumps it back to Sentuo. Popular Ghanaian comedian, Funny Face, has been granted bail after being remanded into police custody following a tragic accident. The Kasoa District Court granted him bail in the sum of GHC120,000 with two sureties on Tuesday, April 9. The incident occurred on Sunday, March 24, 2024, when Funny Face was involved in an accident on the Kasoa-Nyanyano Kakraba highway at the Kakraba Junction. The comedian allegedly knocked down three pedestrians crossing the road, causing severe injuries. Additionally, he crashed into two motorcycles, resulting in injuries to the riders. Initially, Funny Face was refused bail and remanded for two weeks. However, following further proceedings, he has now been granted bail. Currently, two of the victims are undergoing treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, while the remaining two are being cared for at the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa. Funny Face is expected to reappear in court in four weeks as investigations into the accident continue. The granting of bail allows him temporary freedom pending the outcome of the legal process.
