A 30-year-old taxi driver named Akwasi Yeboah, who operated in Kasoa Akweley, Awutu Senya East, Central Region, has met his untimely death after checking into a hotel with his side chic. The incident occurred after he left his wife and child at home. Reports indicate that after several sexual encounters, Yeboah collapsed and died. Before the incident, Yeboah had informed his fellow taxi drivers that his side chic had finally agreed to his advances, and he intended to have a good time with her. On Tuesday, a group of protesters gathered at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra to express their opposition to the sale of a 60% stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel. The protest, dubbed “Hands Off Our Hotels,” was spearheaded by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu. The hotels involved in the controversial sale include Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Resort, and Trust Lodge Hotel. Organised Labour and other stakeholders have joined Ablakwa in questioning the transparency and fairness of the process that selected Rock City Hotel as the buyer. Mr. Ablakwa has raised concerns over a potential conflict of interest, given that Rock City Hotel is owned by Bryan Acheampong, the current Minister of Food and Agriculture. In response, Acheampong has denied any wrongdoing, distancing himself from the daily operations of Rock City Hotel. He emphasized his role as a non-executive director, stating, “There is a difference between Bryan Acheampong and Rock City. I own the company, but I do not make daily decisions for it.” SSNIT has defended its decision, stating that the sale followed an International Competitive Tendering (ICT) process as per the Public Procurement Act, and was aimed at raising capital and improving management of the hotels. This strategic move, SSNIT claims, began in 2018. During the protest march, which began at Labadi Beach Hotel and proceeded to the Jubilee House, the seat of government, demonstrators carried placards with messages such as “Hands Off Our Hotels,” “Bryan, Don’t Be a Thief,” and “Pensioners Deserve Better.” The protesters argue that profitable state assets, like the Labadi Beach Hotel and Ridge Royal Hotel, should not be sold, especially without the consent of the workers. Mr. Ablakwa called on President Akufo-Addo to intervene and stop the sale. He warned that if the president does not respond favorably, the demonstrations would spread to other regions, including the Central Region, where hotels like Ridge Royal and Elmina Resort are located. “We may go to the Central Region where very iconic hotels like Ridge Royal and Elmina Resort are, and then remember that Busua Lodge and Trust Lodge are under attack,” Ablakwa said. In his presentation, Mr. Allotey provided a comprehensive overview of the provisional seedling distribution results, highlighting that the Ashanti Region exceeded its target by 199%, distributing 4,170,552 seedlings, well above the initial target of 2,100,000. Additionally, 13 other regions successfully exceeded their targets, demonstrating a nationwide commitment to environmental conservation. Mr. Allotey acknowledged that two regions faced challenges in meeting their targets, but emphasized the Forestry Commission's dedication to supporting these regions to achieve their goals. The Ministry of Health has announced the successful acquisition of funds necessary to clear essential Global Fund commodities currently held at the Tema Port, including crucial tuberculosis (TB) medication. This significant development promises to enhance the availability of vital medical supplies across Ghana. The Ministry disclosed that it received a total of 283 containers of various health commodities through the Global Fund, detailed as follows: Mosquito Nets (ITNs): 272 containers, Pharmaceuticals (ARVs, HIV RDTs, and ACTs): 2 containers, TB Medication: 1 container and Medical Devices and Equipment (TB cartridges): 8 containers. The total number of containers stands at 283. To facilitate the clearance process, the Ministry, with support from the Ministry of Finance, initially secured auction chits for 219 containers, leaving 64 containers pending clearance due to outstanding third-party charges totaling GHC 7,429,694.39. In a concerted effort to address this challenge, the Ministry of Health requested additional support from the Ministry of Finance. This request was met with a positive response, resulting in the allocation of GHC 7,429,694.39. These funds are earmarked for the payment of demurrage fees, enabling the clearance of the remaining 64 containers, which include the essential TB medication, additional mosquito nets, and associated third-party charges. The Ministry of Health has assured the public that with these funds now secured, all outstanding containers will be cleared by the end of June 2024. Over 30 students of Ajumako Afransi Technical and Vocational Institute in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region have been hospitalized for suspected food poisoning. The victims not long after eating Waakye and stew during launch time on Tuesday June 10, 2024, started experiencing serious stomach pains and running tummy accompanied by vomiting. The school authorities rushed them to the Ajumako Baah Hospital and Ajumako District Government Hospital for treatment. Some of the parents after hearing the news, rushed to the hospital and the school to find out what was happening to their children. According to Kasapa News' Yaw Boagyan, other students who have reported sick Wednesday morning, June 12 have also been taken to the hospital for treatment. Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu has slipped and fallen over at an official event to mark 25 years of democracy in the country. The president, 72, fell as he climbed the steps on a vehicle which was supposed to take him around Eagle Square in the capital, Abuja. He had to be helped to get back to his feet. One of his aides described it as a "mild misstep" and said the president had been able to continue with the rest of the programme. "He immediately went on with the ceremonial rounds. No issues,” wrote presidential aide Dada Olusegun on X. Mr Tinubu’s closest challenger during last year’s election, Atiku Abubakar, expressed his sympathy. “I sincerely sympathise with President Bola Tinubu over this unfortunate incident as he was set to review the parade on Democracy Day. I do hope that all is well with him,” he wrote on X.
