REMEMBERING GREAT HEROS: Late Atta Mills Turns 76 Today (Pictures + Videos)

Ghana is in a solemn mood as its citizens have remembered and marked the 76th Birthday of Late Former President Prof. John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills.


The Late Professor Atta-Mills was born July 21, 1944 at Tarkwa.


He was a legal scholar and a politician who served as a president for the Republic of Ghana.


His government was the 3rd under the 4th Regime in the history of Ghana .

Late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills was named as the Majority Leader after serving in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th Parliament and once the Second Deputy Speaker.


Atta Mills was a fortunate person in his field of work as he was elevated in the position of Vice President for Former President Jerry John Rawlings from 1997 to 2001 after the demise of Kow Nkensen Arkaah, then Running Mate.


He stood unsuccessful in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections as the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He was inaugurated on 7 January 2009 having defeated the ruling party’s candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 election by a narrow margin 50.23-49.77 % in the Ghana’s history.

He was again selected as a party’s candidate in the 2012 presidential election; however he died five (5) months before the election was held.

John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills died in July 24,2012 at the age of 68yrs although today marks his 76th birthday.

In the history of Ghana , he was the first and only Ghanaian head of state to die in office.

Ghana has indeed lost a great person and he will never be forgotten due to his charisma and personality.


He was affectionately called the “Asomdwoe Hene”



It was under his watch that Former President John Mahama was unveiled and nurtured as a leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
