The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson has appealed to some fisherfolks and residents at Osu in the Greater Accra Region to own up so they can be monitored if they have eaten some of the fishes which were reported to have been washed ashore over the weekend.
Addressing Journalists and some fisherfolks in Accra, she said "I want to use this opportunity to plead with community if any one has taken some of the fish, and has used it should own up so that we can monitor you so that we can notice any problems"
She added that although some fisherfolks sometimes do catch fishes at the shore, the ones which made it way over the weekend was not meant to be consumed.
Madam Koomson said "I am here this afternoon because of the information we heard this past weekend. We heard that some fishes have been found at the shore dead which is not usual. That is not how we collect fish from the sea as we all know. We were all scared because we wanted to know what caused that kind of situation at the sea. I called the Fisheries Commission's Officer, FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to come and find out what the problem is."
On her part, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Delese Darko said "As the Minister has said, we are pleading with persons who have eaten the fish to show up so we can monitor.
She charged the market women not to sell the fish to the people in the market adding that it can be detrimental to their health.
Chief Fisherman of the area, Nii Djanladja VI appealed to the Ministry to do all it can to ensure that fisherfolks return to the sea as soon as possible.
