President Nana Akufo-Addo has called upon journalists to leverage their platforms to amplify awareness of critical global issues, with a primary focus on climate change.
Addressing the 3rd African Media Convention in Accra on Friday, the President emphasized the vital role the media plays in educating the public and mobilizing collective action to combat environmental challenges.
“Climate change poses an existential threat to our planet and our way of life. It is here that the media’s role becomes even more critical. The media has the platform and the power to focus the world’s attention on the urgency of this issue,” President Akufo-Addo stated.
He highlighted the media’s capacity to give a voice to those most affected by climate change, particularly in marginalized communities often neglected in global discussions.
By spotlighting these voices, the media can drive a more inclusive and comprehensive dialogue on environmental sustainability.
The President urged journalists not only to report on climate change but also to integrate sustainable practices within their own industry.
This includes efforts such as reducing carbon footprints, promoting recycling, and utilizing sustainable energy sources.
“Environmental sustainability should be at the heart of media practice,” he stressed.
Moreover, President Akufo-Addo addressed the emerging challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI).
He voiced concerns over AI’s potential negative impacts and advocated for a collaborative approach between governments and media organizations to regulate this rapidly evolving technology.
“The potential adverse effects of artificial intelligence must be managed through joint efforts to ensure responsible and ethical use,” he added.
In his speech, President Akufo-Addo also underscored the essential role of a free and independent media in maintaining democratic societies.
He highlighted the responsibility of journalists to uphold accuracy and dignity in their reporting, ensuring that their work contributes to informed and respectful public discourse.
"The media’s influence extends beyond informing the public; it shapes public opinion and can lead societal change. Therefore, media freedom and journalistic integrity are paramount to fostering a healthy democracy,” the President remarked.
The convention in Accra gathered media professionals from across Africa, providing a platform to discuss the continent’s most pressing issues and the media’s role in addressing them.
President Akufo-Addo’s call to action resonated with attendees, reinforcing the importance of media responsibility in driving awareness and action on climate change.
As climate change continues to threaten global ecosystems and livelihoods, the President’s message serves as a timely reminder of the crucial role that media can play in advocating for sustainable practices and policies.
By harnessing their reach and influence, journalists can significantly contribute to the fight against climate change and help secure a sustainable future for all.
