The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the deaths of seven illegal miners following a violent clash with soldiers on duty at the AngloGold Ashanti Mines in Obuasi. The incident occurred late on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at approximately 11:00 PM, when a group of around 60 illegal miners breached the mine’s security fence and attempted to access the Deep Decline area. In a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations, the GAF explained that the miners, armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, gas cylinders, and other tools, opened fire on the military personnel when confronted. “The troops returned fire in self-defence. The shootout led to the death of seven illegal miners and one seriously injured. The remaining illegal miners bolted away,” the statement said. The GAF revealed that a soldier sustained injuries after being hit by pellets from a pump-action gun but has since been treated. Six pump-action BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene. The Director General of Public Relations, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, reiterated that military personnel on authorised duty are empowered to use lethal force when necessary to protect lives and property. “The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to reiterate its caution to all and sundry that military personnel on authorised duty have the right to defend themselves, innocent civilians, and property, including the use of lethal force, if necessary to preserve life. GAF urges all illegal miners to stay away from mining concessions and desist from engaging troops in shootouts since the consequences of such actions could be fatal,” the statement added. The AngloGold Ashanti Mines in Obuasi, a longstanding target for illegal miners, has faced numerous operational challenges and safety concerns due to these incursions. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has unveiled a new Management Committee for the senior national football team, the Black Stars. The committee will be led by Dr Randy Abbey, a member of the GFA Executive Council, who will spearhead engagement with the government and other key stakeholders. He will be supported by Stephen Appiah, a former Black Stars captain, who takes on the role of Vice-Chairman, focusing on player relations. Please, treat this fake appointment letter with the contempt it deserves,” the statement emphasized. The Greater Accra Muslim Community has honored the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, with a special Jummah prayer session at his official residence. The sacred gathering sought divine wisdom and blessings for the Ga Mantse and his sub-chiefs as they continue to lead the Ga State. Clad in symbolic white attire, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II warmly welcomed the Muslim delegation and joined them in observing the holy prayers. The session included Khutbatul Quran prayers led by Abdul Ganiyu Inyass, the Imam of Tijjaniyyah Gbawe Gonse. In the new appointment, Kwame Governs Agbodza (MP) has been assigned the role of Minister of Roads and Highway. Eric Opoku (MP) has been stationed at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey (MP) will oversee the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP) takes up the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts. Emelia Arthur (MP) will hold the affairs at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture. George Opare-Addo has been directed by President Mahama to steer the affairs of the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment. Haruna Iddrisu (MP) takes charge at the Ministry of Education. "I apologize for not being able to respond to the numerous WhatsApp calls on my phone and that of my husband at this time. Currently, he is stable, and we remain hopeful for the best. The music world is mourning the loss of Teddy Osei, founding member of the iconic Afro-rock band Osibisa and a legendary Ghanaian saxophonist. Late Osei passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at the age of 88, as confirmed by Bessa Simons, President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA). Born in Kumasi, Osei's journey into music began in his childhood, where his fascination with instruments was nurtured. As a college student in Sekondi, he discovered his talent for the saxophone, initially picking it up out of necessity when another band member failed to attend rehearsals. His passion for music grew, leading him to form his first band, The Comets, after working briefly as a building inspector. The Comets, a semi-professional band inspired by the Highlife genre, gained popularity in Ghana, recording with Philips West Africa and performing on a local radio show. However, Osei’s ambition took him to London in 1962, where he received a government grant to study music and drama. This chapter of his life was cut short in 1966 following the overthrow of President Kwame Nkrumah, which led to the termination of his scholarship. Undeterred, Osei continued his musical pursuits, forming the group Cat’s Paw, which gained a following in Switzerland. Alongside his brother Mac Tontoh and fellow musician Sol Amarfio, he laid the groundwork for what would become Osibisa in 1969. Osibisa, known for its unique fusion of African rhythms and Western rock, rose to international prominence in the 1970s, earning a place in music history as one of the first African bands to achieve global acclaim. . Though the band’s popularity waned in later decades, it continued to perform, with Osei at its heart, inspiring audiences worldwide. Teddy Osei’s life and career were a testament to perseverance, creativity, and the power of music to transcend borders. His contribution to African music and his role in introducing the world to Highlife and Afro-rock will remain an enduring legacy. He is survived by his family, bandmates, and a world of fans who will forever cherish his remarkable contribution to music. Details of his funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
