  • MPs Don't Construct Roads; 'Masa' My Party Is Not In Government What Do You Expect Me To Do?— NDC MP

The NDC Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo Constituency, Ebenezer Okletey-Teye Larbi, has said construction of roads is not part of his work as a lawmaker. According to him, his government is not in power and there is little he can do about issue of poor road networks in his constituency. He was responding to questions in a telephone interview about the poor road network in Akuse, a community in his constituency. “My brother the point is that it is also a concern to me so the fact is that the roads have not been done. So I don’t think there is anything I can tell you. I am not in government and I can only talk about it. You know MPs cannot construct roads,” he told Freelance Journalist Amos Ekow Coffie. When asked what effort he is putting in to ensure to address the poor road networks, Mr Larbi stated that the issue has been put before Parliament but nothing has been done about it. “MPs cannot construct roads. Lobby who? I say lobby who? It has been there already. You go to Parliament and find out if it is not there. I have spoken about it. I have asked questions about it. It is there and the Minister has come to promise and so that’s the extent to which I can go. What do you expect me to do?" he stated. The MP continued, “Masa, when you come to Lower Manya it is not only Akuse that has road problems, we have road problems all over, so sometimes you people should educate the people the more. Let the people know. My whole life as an MP, I can’t use my money to construct it, so push more like what, look the work of an MP is to bring it to the attention of the ministry. You can ask for monies to be released to be done but can’t come and hold the MP. You people should educate our people to appreciate what we are doing so that they don’t put unnecessary pressure on us, no MP can construct roads.” Residents on September 21, 2021 in a communal labour exercise to mark Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, lamented the challenges they go through in plying the bad roads. The situation, they claim, drive potential investors. “We decided to have a communal labour because of our roads. The road is very bad when it rains people cannot come out, from here to Okwenya, cars have to ply the roads for about an hour or 30minutes before reaching Okwenya, so we are appealing to the government to come to our aid and do the roads for us because Akuse is an old town, we have to do the roads so that, the town will be good for us so we are appealing to the government to come to our aid,” a resident told this reporter. Akuse is home to one of the oldest hospitals in Ghana, the Akuse Government Hospital, the Akuse Prisons, and the Kpong Dam. Its indigences are predominantly small and medium scale business owners and farmers. It has a population of about 1,500 and serves as the major link which connects Asutuare and other surrounding communities. Credit: Modern Ghana

  • HIV Scare Hits Ashongman Kwabenya As Disease Is Said To Be Spreading Like Wild Bush Fire

There is massive fear and concern among residents of Ashongman Estate in the Kwabenya Municipality of Ga East in Accra over the spread of HIV AIDS among residents especially among young men and women. Some of the young men and women who spoke to MyNewsGh.com under strict condition of anonymity say the disease is spreading like unhindered bush fire among the young folks of the area some of whom have reported to health facilities and taking medications for it. Majority of them are however said to have gone to be tested and are positive but are not taking any medication and are probably spreading it through promiscuous activities at pubs and restaurants and clubs in and around Ashongman, Kwabenya, Pokuase and Dome areaa. The Ashongman area has become a notorious vicinity for internet and spiritual fraudsters popularly known as Sakawa boys while various locations such as the Musuku round about have become hotspots for prostitutes at night, residents familiar with the development told MyNewsGh.com. While no linkage has been established between LGBTQI and news of the HIV spread in the areas, this news is coming only a few months after a four-bedroom house located at Jasmine Street at Ashongman Estate was found to be used as a centre to promote Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) in Accra. It contained a front desk, a conference room and some office equipment, such as photocopiers, cabinets, a projector and a flip chart to support LGBTQI. The Kwabenya traditional council moved to close down the office as the landlord ejected the tenants with police intervention. Source: MyNewsGh.com

  • Takoradi: "My Wife Was Pregnant" – Husband of Missing But Found Woman Insists

Michael Simmons, the husband of Josephine Panyin Mensah, the pregnant woman who allegedly went missing in Takoradi, has spoken out after his wife was found in Axim in the Western Region. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Michael Simmons said he was yet to speak to his wife, who is under police guard. “But her mother has been able to ask her a few things,” Michael noted. He recounted that on the day she went missing, Josephine’s mother received a call from persons suspected to be behind his wife’s disappearance. Josephine was handed the phone by the suspected kidnappers, but all that she could do was cry to her mother. Since Josephine was found near a Kingdom Hall building in Axim, there has been speculation that her pregnancy was a hoax, following a claim by the Western Regional Minister that a preliminary report shows she was not pregnant. But her husband has refuted these claims. “She had been pregnant for nine months. The problem is when she was going to the hospital, I wasn’t going with her. She was going alone,” he said. Because Michael worked at night, he said he had sent his wife to her mother’s place because she was almost due to deliver. Police are however yet to provide details on the incident. Josephine is currently receiving medical care at the Axim Government Hospital. She was reported missing after she left home on Thursday dawn, September 16, for a walk but did not return. • “We Want A Pension System Where Employers Will Comply And Avoid Payment Of Needless Penalties"-SSNIT

The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Director-General, Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang has hinted that its outfit will ensure that it has a pension system where a majority of employers will voluntarily comply and avoid payment of needless penalties. According to Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang, payment of penalties are a huge cost to businesses and impairs organizational reputation. Speaking at the Annual Business Forum For Forty Under 40, he said “So this morning, if there is one message I’d like to strongly emphasize, then it is for you, as young employers and people of repute, to pay the social security contributions on time or ensure your employers pay on time, that is, by the 14th of the succeeding month” READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/breaking-news-legon-cities-beef-up-technical-team-with-the-appointment-of-maxwell-konadu He charged Organisations to avoid the temptation of paying only for their workers because it is compulsory and leaving one’s name off the contribution report. The Director-General urged the distinguished nominees of the Forty under 40 Awards, to see the social security premiums they pay as a contribution to the future financial wellbeing of their workers and not necessarily a response to demands by the law. He noted that it helps in enhancing employee commitment and loyalty. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/knust-suspends-src-elections-following-katanga-and-conti-clash-video “You have a responsibility first towards yourselves as workers and as employers” he mentioned. “As I’ve said before, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Scheme and the monies in there are for Members. This means Members have the right to information and to question how the scheme is run. We can only answer these questions without fear if we are transparent. Transparency will mean full disclosure on our part, bringing Members up to speed on our operations and their contributions and how we are discharging our obligations as stipulated by law. And all of this must be served on a platter of world-class service delivery” Explaining further, Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang noted that the Pensions Act establishes a three-tier pension scheme where the first and second tiers are compulsory and are funded by both employers and workers. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/ejura-gunshot-survivor-has-lost-one-leg-after-amputation-at-kath “As an operator of the First Tier Scheme, our primary objective is to provide a retirement benefit to workers during old age or in the event of permanent invalidity once they meet the qualifying criteria. We pay these pensions, be it Old Age or Invalidity, throughout the lifetime of the pensioner. For non-Ghanaian workers in the country, they are paid a one-time lump sum which is a refund of their contributions plus interest when they are permanently leaving the country. We can only be able to meet our obligations to workers or pensioners if you fulfill yours as employers and Members of the Scheme.” Stressing on the obligations of the employer, he revealed that as employers, they must register their businesses and every worker they engage with the social security scheme within 30 days of commencing operations. He noted that beyond registering, the employer has to pay contributions for every employee, whether permanent or temporary. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/facemask-coda-boss-urges-police-to-enforce-laws “The total compulsory contributions that is made to SSNIT and the second tier fund managers is 18.5% of the worker’s basic salary. And so, at the end of every month, you are required as employers, to deduct 5.5% of your workers’ salaries and top it up with 13% (based on those same salaries) making 18.5%. Part of this, that is, 13.5% is remitted to SSNIT not later than the 14th day of the ensuing month. So, for September contributions, you have up to 14th October to pay. Late payment attracts interest or penalty. The 5% is paid to a second-tier fund manager of your choice” he said. Touching on handling employer non-compliance, he said “Distinguished nominees, it is our desire that no employer defaults in the discharge of their social security obligations. When you violate any of these provisions, the Trust is compelled to take legal action against you because as I said, the law places an obligation on us to pay benefits to workers or their dependents. And as of the end of August 2021, we had spent over 2.13 billion (2,127,593,594.67) paying benefits” He stated that exercising the option of prosecution is however the last resort because SSNIT understands that businesses go through hard times. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/empire-star-bryshere-gray-sentenced-to-jail-in-domestic-violence-case “We are also not eager to take legal action because we believe that the enormous benefits the Scheme offer Members should motivate you and all employers to contribute voluntarily. What I mean is that the thought of contributing only 13.5% of your salaries, so you, as well as your workers or colleagues, can receive up to 60% of the average of your three best years’ salaries when you retire should encourage you to be regular with your contribution payments. And by the way, your pension will be paid with annual increment throughout your lifetime as a pensioner” “Friends, if age 60 seems like too long a time to wait to claim a benefit, consider a situation where you or your worker has been declared invalid and incapable of engaging any in income-generating activity. Old age may be far, but permanent invalidity may be minutes away. With just 12 months of contributions within the past 36 months, you will be guaranteed an Invalidity Pension for life or until you recover. And by the way, there are several people of your age who are receiving monthly Invalidity Pension from SSNIT. Indeed, there are 1,497 Invalid Pensioners on the pension payroll and just last month (August 2021), we paid over 1.65 million cedis (GHS1,655, 234.00)” In spite of these benefits, as at the end of August 2021, SSNIT had to initiate court cases against 13, 278 employers for various offenses including failure to register their establishments and workers and failure to submit contribution reports. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/we-suspect-arson-targeted-at-destruction-and-concealment-of-material-evidence-at-tano-south-ndc He mentioned that most of the cases were related to failure to pay contributions and associated penalties. “These employers, aside from being compelled to pay the contributions that may be owed, risk being fined up to a maximum 30,000 Ghana Cedis or a prison term not exceeding five years or to both. This should tell you the premium that is placed on securing the future of workers in Ghana” He described the court actions as a drain on both employers and the Trust. READ ALSO: https://www.thinknewsonline.com/post/relationship-15-reasons-why-every-girl-needs-a-guy-bestfriend “I want to assure you that we shall continue to explore various options to create platforms that facilitate easy payment of workers’ contributions. • "I’m Thankful For Opportunity To Serve" – Outgoing Ga East MCE

The Ga East Municipal Chief Executive, Janet Tulasi Mensah says she is appreciative of the opportunity to serve as MCE for the area as she exits office. According to her, she hoped to be retained as MCE in the announced list of President Akufo-Addo’s Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly (MMDCE) nominees, but that was not meant to be as another person, Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, was nominated. “Many, including myself, had hoped that I would be given another opportunity to serve as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA), Abokobi. However, the President made a different choice all in the hope of further developing the municipality,” Janet Mensah noted. She said while in office, she ensured that the municipality saw significant developments, but some challenges still exist, and she is hopeful that the next occupant of the office will address them and make the municipality an enviable one. “Under my tenure of office, a lot was achieved, and I am very proud of our collective efforts in this direction. However, the Municipality faces challenges in some areas of the economy, especially the roads sector, which though we achieved remarkable success, we still have more to do. As I exit, I still have the fervent hope that the Municipality would see more development and truly become the “Enviable Municipality” among its peers in Ghana and beyond.” While thanking President Akufo-Addo for the opportunity to serve since 2017, she expressed appreciation with all assembly members, and stakeholders within the municipality who assisted her throughout the time she was in service as MCE. • "Our Leaders Sold Us Out With Poor Pay Rise Negotiation" - TUC Splinter Group

A splinter group of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Coalition Against Leadership of the Trades Union Congress and Organized Labour, says the leadership of the TUC failed to represent their interest in negotiations with the government over salary increment for the years 2021 and 2022. Executive Secretary for the Coalition, Azubila Salam Emmanuel in an interview on Eyewitness News said they believe that the TUC, led by Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah and the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) led by Isaac Bampoe Addo failed to take into account the rising cost of living in the country before agreeing with the government on their salaries. “Our leaders, Dr. Yaw Baah and Bampoe Addo of CLOGSAG who were signatories to the 4% salary increase for 2021 and 7% of 2022 without knowing the financial projections of next year yet went ahead to accept that percentage are sell-outs. They sold out Ghanaian public sector workers and this is the reason why all government workers across all sectors came together to demonstrate massively in Tamale,” he said. Leaders of organized labour in July 2021 announced a base pay rise agreed with government for public sector workers including teachers, health workers and civil servants. Among other justifications, the TUC said the percentage increase in salaries was accepted on condition that there will be no public sector redundancies or employment freeze. But according to Azubila Salam Emmanuel, the justifications of the TUC leadership for accepting the salary increment are untenable. “All the reasons they are giving doesn’t tally and doesn’t make sense to anybody who wants to scrutinize the reasons for accepting the 4%. Everything is clear that these people went to negotiate for their own pocket and not for the majority of workers who are contributing union fees to them every month. They negotiated for this even without consulting their own union at the regional level not to even talk about the district level… We don’t see them as democratic leaders who are running our union,” he added. The group’s demonstration in Tamale on Tuesday attracted hundreds of government workers across all sectors. Credit: Citinewsroom
