Award-winning musician Charles Nii Armah Mensah popularly generally known as Shatta Wale yesterday was arrested by the Ghana Police for faking his gunshot assault. It might be remembered {that a} day after his birthday, information circulated on social media that the musician has been shot by some unknown gunmen at East Legon. The information was shared by Shatta Wale’s PA generally known as Nana Dope on Snapchat including that Shatta was receiving remedy at a hospital. A number of hours later, it emerged that the act by Shatta Wale and his guys was only a publicity stunt. This angered individuals who known as for his speedy arrest because the act was in opposition to the regulation. Shatta Wale clapped again and defined his motive for pulling such a stunt saying he was doing that to attract consideration to the truth that nobody criticised the Prophet who made a doom prophecy in opposition to him. Ghana's Ministry of Energy has replied the National Democratic Congress (NDC) saying Ex-pump prices have not increased by 7% as purported. According to the Energy Ministry, aside from Total Energies, no other OMC has taken such decision. In a release sighted by Thinknewsonline.com, and issued by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Kwasi Obeng-Fosu, it said "As of today, Total Energies is the only OMC that has revised its price upwards from GHS6.52 per litre to GHS6.80 per litre; that is a 4.29% increase. Other OMCs are yet to announce their prices for the new window" He added that he is confident competition will even force the increase further down to a level below 3%." Furthermore, the implementation of the price deregulation policy in July 2015, the responsibility of setting ex-pump prices lies with the various Bulk Import, Distribution and Export Companies (BIDECs) and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). He added that as a result, changes in prices at the pumps almost every two weeks are not dictated by government but are a direct response to changes of prices of petroleum products on the world market and the strength of the Ghana Cedi (GHS) against the US Dollar (USD), as well as the keen competition amongst the various players competing to sell their products to the motoring public. "Areas of the price build-up of petroleum products controlled by Government is in the form of the taxes and levies imposed on these products. It is important to note that the sum of the taxes on petrol in January 2009 was only 28 pesewas per litre and rose to about 146 pesewas per litre by December 2016. This represents a 426% increase in the taxes and levies. From January 2017 to date the sum of taxes has increased by only 30% from 146 pesewas to 190 pesewas per litre" "Prior to assumption of power by this government the Special Petroleum Tax (SPT) was an ad valorem tax of 17.5% on the ex-depot price of petroleum products. The rate was reduced by Government to 15% in March 2017 and was further converted to a specific tax of 46 pesewas in February 2018. At today’s price of GHS6.52 per litre, the SPT would have been about 83 pesewas per litre, if not for the earlier interventions made by government. This shows that the current Government envisaged the hardships of Ghanaians and took proactive steps to reduce the burden accordingly" He stressed that government has on several occasions between December 2017 and February 2020 intervened in the pricing of petroleum products by either reducing or completely removing the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levies (PSRLs) in the price build-up to cushion consumers from the impact of rising prices of products on the world market. These interventions have cost government about GHS510 million in revenue loss over that period. He again mentioned that, the price of fuel is also influenced by the exchange rate. "The exchange rate saw rapid depreciation of about 237% between January 2009 and December 2016 when it moved from around GHS1.22/USD to GHS4.10/USD. From January 2017 to date, the exchange rate has moved from GHS4.1/USD in January 2017 to around GHS6.2/USD representing a depreciation of just about 51%" HEe argued that under the current Government, it has depreciated at a slow rate and in recent times, almost remained stable when most currencies were trending downwards moving from around today; this is about 51% depreciation. Mr. Obeng-Fosu hinted tha the price of petroleum products on the world market is something government has no control over and it is not Government that dictates the prices of fuel at the pumps in Ghana as it did before July 2015. He stated that it is worthy to note that the price of petrol on the world market in December 2016 was about $504 per metric tonne. This, he believes, has increased by about 55% to around $783 per metric tonne adding that if prices on the world market were at the levels they were in December 2016, the price of petrol for example would have been about GHS5.49 per litre. "The ex-pump price of petrol saw a cumulative increase of about 357% between January 2009 and December 2016 (from GHS0.82/Lt to GHS3.75/Lt). Energy Minister, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has asked decision and policy makers in Africa’s energy sector to harness the natural gas resource in their various countries for the benefit of their people. Dr. Prempeh made this call when he joined other Energy Ministers on the continent virtually for the launch of a policy brief on natural gas in the African Energy landscape on Monday under the auspices of the African Energy Commission. He said the use of natural gas presents a significant opportunity for Africa to bridge the poverty gap by leveraging on its abundance on the continent, as well as its low cost and efficiency relative to other fossil sources. He also indicated that Ghana’s Gas Master Plan recognises the power sector as the most important sector to channel our natural gas resources as currently over 70 % of our fuel requirement for power generation is met by natural gas. “As the world moves towards creating universal access to electricity as well as transitioning from carbon-intensive energy sources to low carbon sources, natural gas presents itself as the fuel of choice. In Ghana for example, investments made between 2019 and 2020 alone will contribute to CO2 emission reductions of about 11,000,000 metric tons in the next decade” he said. He continued, “Recognising the fact that natural gas is instrumental to the growth of the Ghanaian economy as well as those our sister countries, Ghana is positioning itself to be the hub of natural gas supply in the West African Sub-Region” “Our Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal located in Tema, has the potential to supply up to 400 MMscfd of gas, which is enough to meet our domestic requirement as well supply to other neighbouring countries in the sub-region” he further stressed. The natural gas in the African Energy Landscape is the first-in-series of policy briefs that will be produced this year to shed light on the energy situation of Africa, using data collected by AFREC from the AU Member States. The National Pension Regulatory Authority (NPRA), under the auspices of the Ministries of Employment and Labour Relations and Ministry of Finance says it is set to launch its first-ever National Pensions Awareness Week. According to NPRA, the launch which is scheduled for tomorrow will be announced by the Minister for Employment and Labour Relation, Ignagious Bafour Awuah at the Koforidua Jubilee Park in the Eastern Region. The maiden Pension Awareness Week celebration and will be a week-long programme will be under the theme, "Total Participation in Pensions to ensure Retirement Income Security," The event is expected to provide the platform to engage stakeholders on the development of pensions to invigorate a nationwide awareness on pensions. In a release sighted by Thinknewsonline.com, the NPRA has outlined specific venues for the various activities "Launch will come off at Koforidua, sensitisation of Cocoa Farmers will also be held in Sunyani whiles an Informal Sector Forum will take place in Kumasi, Prempeh Assembly Hall" Others include; a Public Lecture at UEW, Winneba, a visit to Traditional and Religious Leaders at the Accra & Zonal Offices, Markets Activation at Ho, Commissioning of Tema office in Tema and media activities across Ghana. The other activities to mark the week include visits by Management to Private Institutions such as Driver Unions, Beauticians Association of Ghana, Traditional Councils, Christian Councils across the country. The Authority will also use the occasion to engage the media to drum home pension matters and make known the activities of the NPRA to the general public. There would also be programmes at the markets, communities and workplaces to sensitise workers: public lectures, stakeholder engagements and quiz programme for students. The National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), under the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766), has been implementing the contributory Three-Tier Pension Scheme since January 2010. The Authority is the sole regulator of the pension industry in the Republic of Ghana. This is done through effective policy direction to secure retirement income for the retired and the aged in Ghana. As part of its mandate, the Authority has been actively engaged in education and sensitization on all pension-related matters in the country for the past ten years. The data available indicate that the pension coverage in the country is still low. Despite the enormous efforts by the Authority to whip up the interest among the Ghanaian working populace, especially those in the informal sector, to register on pension schemes, the Authority believes there is more to be done to raise the awareness on pensions in the country. It is estimated that about eighty-five percent (85%) of the working population in the country is found in the informal sector. The need for these workers to be on pension schemes has been a primary concern to the Authority. This needs to be done to reduce poverty and other old age and retirement challenges ahead of the Ghanaian worker within the coming years. The situation appears worrying primarily due to Ghana's aging review. More and more older people find themselves in a difficult financial situation when they reach retirement age because of a lack of sufficient savings and as housing costs and medical expenses rise. Many people in the informal sector reaching retirement age do not have any of the pensions schemes that some workers in the formal sector have and often have not put enough money into savings. The Authority has therefore embarked on a strategy to engage workers in the informal sector to whip their interest and also encourage them to understand and appreciate the urgent need to register for a pension scheme to ensure retirement income security for all Ghanaians. Activities during the week will also help in bridging the knowledge gap among some key stakeholders and, in the long run, improve participation in pensions and retirement planning. The Ghana Police Service has announced via Twitter that it has arrested the President of the Shatta Movement, Charles Nii Armah Mensah known in showbiz as Shattawale. It will be recalled that news broke of the Artiste being shot by gunmen at East Legon a community in Accra few days ago. However, it emerged that the said news was fake. The sad but fake news generated lots of mixed reactions on social media. The Ghana Police Service has also confirmed that it has arrested two in connection to the spreading of fake information about the alleged shooting of Shattawale. More to follow.... The Police have today, 19th October, 2021, arrested Kojo Owusu Koranteng, also known as Nana Dope and Eric Venator, alias Gangee, for allegedly spreading false information with the intention to cause fear and panic. The arrest of the suspects is in response to the alleged circulation of false claims on the alleged gunshot attack on Shatta Wale. Preliminary investigations by the Police reveal the widely reported gunshot attack on Shatta Wale yesterday Monday, 18th October, 2021 was a hoax. Shatta Wale and one other person popularly referred to as ‘Deportee’ are currently being pursued for their possible involvement and knowledge of the circulation of false information with the intention to cause fear and panic. No one will be spared if Police investigations point to their possible criminal culpability in this matter. We want to caution any individual or group to desist from making false claims and engaging in acts, capable of disturbing the peace of the country because the law will come after you. The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has inspected work Central Oil Mills Limited, a wholly Ghanaian owned agro-processing company located at Jukwa Mfuom/Asamanso in the Hemang Lower Denkyira District of Central Region, which specialises in oil palm development and palm oil processing, and is operating under Government’s 1-District-1-Factory initiative. President Akufo-Addo visited the factory, on Tuesday, 19th October 2020, on day 2 of his 2-day tour of the Central Region. As part of Government’s Industrial Transformation Agenda, Central Oil Mills, established in 2010, was identified as one of the potentially viable but distressed companies. To this end, an organisational audit was conducted by a team of technical consultants from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, who recommended the company to the Ghana EXIM Bank for support under the One District One Factory (1D1F) programme. Ghana Exim Bank, on 21st November 2018, approved a Medium-Term Loan Facility of GH¢12 million for Central Oil Mills Limited to undertake three main activities: These are the rehabilitation and expansion of an existing primary crude palm oil processing factory at Jukwa-Mfoum, the establishment of a brand new secondary (value-addition) oil palm processing factory at Jukwa-Asamanso, with capacity to process vegetables (Canned and bottled products), and the expansion and development of oil palm plantation. The Bank subsequently approved a supplementary loan of GH¢2 million for the project, thus bringing the total loan approved for the project to GHS14 Million. The new factory at Asamanso and the expansion work at Mfuom are about 95% and 90% completed respectively, and are both expected to be fully completed by 30th November 2021. The project involves the expansion of an existing oil palm mill with an initial capacity of 2,400 metric tonnes of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) per annum into a bigger mill with a minimum capacity of 12,000 metric tonnes of FFB per annum on a single shift, with capacity to do double shifts. With a yield of 20%, this will produce 2,400 metric tonnes of palm oil per annum which could be processed into secondary canned and bottled products. In addition, through the revitalisation process, the company has increased its storage capacity from 30 metric tonnes to 150 metric tonnes. The company has rehabilitated it existing oil palm plantation and has initiated the process to expand its plantation by 200 acres per annum over five years. This is being supported by the acquisition of new trucks, and farm implements to support cultivation and transportation. The company also has existing nucleus farms at Jukwa Mfuom and its environs and also about 50 out-grower individuals. The project is expected to create a minimum of 200 direct jobs from its current skeletal workforce of 30 persons when fully operational. More than 500 indirect jobs will be created within two years at both factory sites and from the plantation. Buyers from South Africa, Italy, Netherlands and Nigeria are already in discussions with the company for export of finished products, thus opportunity to generate foreign exchange for the country. The Ablekuma Central Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with the Ministry of National Security has held an inter-party dialogue committee (IPDC) meeting for members of the various political parties and other stakeholders. According to the NCCE, the meeting is aimed at reigniting dialogue among political parties and other stakeholders on the collective responsibility of ensuring peaceful co-existence as a cornerstone of nation building. Addressing the gathering, Chairperson of the NCCE, Josephine Nkrumah who was the special guest of honour, said “The social cohesion and unity we need in this country is not just mere words. If you can see the deprecations of what occurred in an African country. A country that was known to be peaceful just saw a little trigger and everything messed. It will take decades to try and resort normalcy” “To the dead, we cannot bring them back but to those alive, they have to live with the horror of war. Those who have to live with the mental anguish, maimed and perhaps may never be useful to work, those are the things you will never even want to wish for your enemies” she added. Speaking on being united as one people with a common vision, Madam Nkrumah reminded the gathering that the state is bound to carry out certain interventions which will build national unity. She stressed that the state through football among other national activities does not only bring people together to achieve a common purpose but also builds a national cohesion with does not leave the state to act in a vacuum. “The state needs the co-operation of all of us. So, what do we do to also contribute to national peace? At NCCE, one of the mandates of the citizens is to live at peace with one another wherever you are” Madam Josephine Nkrumah paid a tribute to the Late leader of the Western Togoland Secessionist group, Papavi who passed away few days ago. “The important thing is that, as human beings, because, we live and work together, we will not always agree. As a human being, we will disagree but the important thing is how, we co-exist in peace, respect each other’s differences, views and still live together” she added. The Chairperson reminded the gathering that the beauty of every country lies in the diversity of the people living in it. Madam Nkrumah also noted that the country stands a chance of a collective gains when there is peace and stability as the two were part of the few things inherited from predecessors. “Without peace, we cannot have political stability, democracy we say we enjoy. Peace is a necessary requisite for our own economic well-being. When there is no peace, can we go to work or enjoy our trade? She advised the parents and youths not to fall for the ‘cheap talks’ of violent extremists adding that they have nothing good to offer. She stressed that availing oneself to violent extremists will not only destroy the individual but the entire community. “Studies suggests that over 70% of people who have converted to violent extremisms have had a negative encounter with security agencies” She used the occasion urged Ghanaians to stick to the wearing of the nose mask to avoid the spread of the covid-19 virus. Sharing his thoughts on the need for peace among the various political parties and stakeholders, the Mamprobi Station Officer, Chief Inspector Joseph Yeboah underscored the need for the populace to do away with the activities of vigilantes and their notorious activities in the society. “Vigilantism is when some groups of people are put together to intimidate others especially people from the opposite political party” “Anybody who forms a vigilante group in the country and being caught by the Act 999, will be sentence to 10 or 15 years” He also warned land guards who go about intimidating people to desist from such acts or face the wrath of the law when arrested. The Chief Inspector commended the people leaving in the Ablekuma Central for exhibiting good behaviours. On her part, the Regional Director, Greater Accra Region of NCCE, Lucille Hewlett Annan “After the violence happened at the Ayawaso West, the Vigilantism law was passed so that it will curb violence and the law says that no one whether, individual, association, political party can form a vigilante group” She also mentioned that there are currently no vigilante groups in the country. “If you form a vigilante group and you are caught, you will spend a closer to 10 or 15 years in jail. If you also join since you didn’t form it or you sponsor them. The vigilante law is like an octopus, wherever, you pass, it will arrest you” Madam Annan reminded the gathering that no organization will employ person(s) who served jail terms. She also ceased the opportunity to educate the stakeholders on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). She stressed that although the ADR helps in resolving issues, it is not avenue for settling criminal activities. “ADRs are very important because it saves people from spending much at the court. Petty issues can be resolved at the ADR but issues such as murder and rape cannot be dealt with at the level of the ADR” She appealed to the gathering to report to the police any activities of people they suspect in their environments. She stressed that without reporting such people, those deviants will end up nurturing more youths to partake in their unacceptable behaviours. Madam Lucille Annan reminded the gathering to always seek permission from the police before blocking major roads in their communities. She stressed that without a police permit, it is unappropriated for people to take the laws into their hands and do what they like. The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has revealed that it has arrested Ghanaian comedian, Benson Nana Yaw Benson Oduro Boateng known in showbiz as Funny Face for allegedly threatening certain individuals. According to the Ghana Police, tye suspect made the threats on social media. It is emerging that Funny Face was picked up on Monday, 18th October, 2021 at 10:14 pm. The Police further hinted that due to the history of the suspect, it shall submit Funny Face to the court for an order for psychiatric examination, to determine the next line of investigative action. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's position as Manchester United boss looks precarious after a run of terrible results. The Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come under a lot of criticism recently following a poor run of results and, if reports are to be believed, he will have an ex-Premier League winning manager breathing down his neck in Antonio Conte. Solskjaer impressed last season with a second-placed Premier League finish, alongside an agonising defeat in the Europa League final against Villarreal. The signings United made this summer were set to improve on that standing and pundits and fans alike expected Solskjaer's men to finally challenge for silverware across all competitions. But having scraped through the Champions League so far, being knocked out of the League Cup and looking miles off the pace in the Premier League, the Norwegian has come under a lot of fire from many stakeholders. And according to Calciomercato, United chiefs have started to hold Solskjaer's future in doubt after continuous poor results - meaning Antonio Conte could come in. Conte famously won the league with Chelsea in 2017 with an incredible 93 points, seven ahead of second-placed Tottenham and an astonishing 24 points ahead of Manchester United in sixth. His 3-4-3 style of football took the Premier League by storm, with Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Willian linking up to bring a fifth Premier League title to Stamford Bridge. And with the Italian winning the Serie A title last season with Inter Milan, he is a manager in hot demand in terms of being able to win silverware - with the report by Calciomercato claiming that a move could be done with talks 'gathering pace'. The Lecce-born manager, who won the Serie A three times with Juventus too, would inherit a squad similar to the one he took over at Chelsea. And with the report claiming a deal could be done soon whilst United remain in and around the top of the Premier League, talks could move fast to oust Solskjaer from the hot seat. The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi is calling on the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-NPP government to as a matter of urgency scrap the Special Petroleum Tax (SPT). According to Sammy Gyamfi, it is untenable for the government to do so. Addressing Journalists on Monday, he said "Scrap the Special Petroleum Tax (SPT) of 46 pesewas on a liter of diesel and petrol. It will be recalled that the SPT was introduced by the erstwhile NDC/Mahama administration sometime in 2016 when crude oil export price fell far below the government’s budgetary projections. The objective was to shore up the government’s revenue for development purposes. "But given the fact that crude oil export price has increased from below $40 to above $80 per barrel currently, far above the government’s budgetary projection of $54.75 per barrel, it is untenable for government to still maintain the SPT on the price of petroleum products now, and same should be scrapped immediately. This is particularly so, when government’s revenue from the oil sector for the second quarter of this year 2021, went up by almost 60%, equivalent to US$89.1 million, as compared to oil revenue for the same period in the previous year" Mr. Gyamfi also tasked the Akufo-Addo administration to also scrap the newly introduced taxes on fuel products such as the Energy Sector Levies of 20 pesewas on a liter of diesel and petrol. Touching on the new sanitation levy (“Borla” tax) of 10 pesewas on a liter of diesel and petrol, the NDC's National Communication Officer described the action by the NPP government as totally needless and useless. The NDC, however, says it is challenging the government to ensure that the new increase of 18 pesewas on a kilogram of LPG to also be scrapped. "And finally, we wish to call on the government to consider the review of other existing taxes on fuel products in line with proposals submitted to the Ministry of Finance and Energy by the Chamber Of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) and other stakeholders in the downstream petroleum sector" Sammy Gyamfi stressed that the demands are not borne out of cheap politics or partisanship. "We wish to remind President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia to respect and uphold the sanctity of their political pact with the Ghanaian electorate. The Ghanaian people did not bargain for this level of a tax burden on the prices of petroleum products in the 2020 December 7 Polls. Governance at all times must be about the advancement of the collective good and not the narrow interest of a select few. This government has become too removed from the stark realities of the Ghanaian people and it is about time they got back on track" The NDC hinted that should government heed their advice, the prices of diesel and petrol will reduce drastically. "This will stabilize the ever-rising prices of general goods and services and go a long way to ameliorate the plight of suffering Ghanaians. But should government fail to heed our wise counsel as they always do, prices of general goods and services will continue to soar, hardships in the country will continue to worsen to gargantuan levels and all of us, irrespective of our political affiliations, except the few privileged ones in government, will continue to suffer." "As you do know, the last quarter of the year usually presents an opportunity for many to turn around their economic fortunes as we prepare for the yuletide. I have chosen to write to you and not address Mr. Commey directly on his comments, because of his close proximity to you and the role he plays for you at the Presidency, hence the probability that he was speaking your mind. He intimated in his statement among other things, that you Mr. Akufo Addo have said you will only hand over power to an NPP Presidential Candidate and that you are not handing over power to an NDC government. First of all, I want to believe Mr. Lord Commey was not speaking your mind even though he was representing you at the said NPP Conference, if that is not the case, then it will be imperative to as a matter of urgency and in the interest of the integrity of the Presidency, that you deny in no uncertain terms the comments of Mr. Lord Commey. Having said that, it is evident that the tantrums of Lord Commey is symptomatic of the fear of defeat borne out of the blatant failure of your government and the maladministration of same, which has brought in its wake unbearable economic misery and has further threatened the security and stability of our democracy, as has been the case in the sub-region. His comment is yet again, another typical example of political intentions that precipitated recent coup d’tats in some neighboring countries. Mr. President, with the events of Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections, the 2020 election violence, and it's attendant fatalities still fresh on our minds, you will be deceiving yourself to think that we shall take such comments lightly. Therefore, let it be known to you Mr. Akufo Addo and your assigns including Mr. Lord Commey that absolutely no amount of violence, cowardice induced tough talk, systemic manipulation, or political aggression will save the NPP and any remnants of your bunch of clueless incompetent appointees from defeat in 2024. And never again will the use of electoral violence, dictatorial aggression, election manipulation, and political bloodshed by your government go unresisted, unresponded, and unanswered. We dare you to try, Mr. Akufo Addo. We dare you! Indeed, if you are not aware, let me share with you the stark reality of your Presidency today. The reality is that you have lost grip of the government, you have lost touch with the oath you took and the people you took the oath on their behalf. Mr. President, your government has outlived its usefulness and does not even deserve a day in government. And be informed that the NDC is energized more than ever to deliver power in 2024, no matter what it takes or costs, even at the peril of our lives. Victory 2024 shall be a non-negotiable Do or Die affair for us as a party. We are ready to confront and neutralize any form of aggression, and whiles at it, be reminded that we have been better at it, at least history provides enough evidence. We can't fail the suffering masses of our country and our generation of young people. Finally, Mr. President, let me assure you once again for emphasis, with certainty and without any shred of equivocation, that power shall change in 2024 and when it does you shall hand over to an NDC government with despatch without delay or hindrance and with your eyes widely open.
