A Senior Officer of the Vector Control Unit, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Abel Djangmah, has reiterated the need to continuously intensify the ongoing monthly disinfection operation at the country’s airports. According to him, this has become necessary, especially in the wake of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 pandemic, which spreads fast, and the fact that a lot of people (both Ghanaians and foreigners) travelled into the country for the Yuletide. Mr Djangbah made the call while speaking to the media during this month’s disinfection exercise at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on Monday night (January 17, 2022). He said for the past year, Zoomlion has been disinfecting the country’s airports every month, explaining that “we do that because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and that just a little about two weeks ago, we were at Kotoka to embark on same all as part of efforts to fight the virus.” However, he indicated that one key challenge with the Covid fight was the unstable nature of the virus. This development, he stressed, was making the control measures by scientists a little challenging. “Therefore, we cannot relent on our efforts in the previous exercises that we have done. We have to continue applying all the necessary measures until it is finally declared that Covid-19 is no more in the country,” Mr Djangbah urged. In addition to the airports disinfection, the senior officer of the Vector Control Unit of Zoomlion said it was equally imperative that Ghanaians also obey the other Covid safety protocols. He said these were wearing of nose mask, regular washing of hands with soap, use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers and practising social distancing as well. “So, all these measures together will help mother Ghana defeat Covid-19,” he said. On the question of effectiveness of the disinfection exercise, Mr Djangbah said the product being used by his outfit was very potent enough to fight the virus. “…and in particular, it works on surfaces very well. So it kills viruses on surfaces instantly when applied. These are products that are not produced here but imported from Germany and other places.” …So they have been tested and proven to be efficacious, and they have worked in several countries,” he said. Further, he explained that anytime a disinfection operation was carried out by his company, it was followed by an evaluation exercise. “Evaluation is not done in a day. It takes time so you cannot just stand here and say that what I have done is effective or not. Even with the vaccine, it could be seen that though people have taken the jabs, they were still being entreated to observe the other Covid protocols,” he noted. For scientific tasks, he said after the work is done, there was still the need to evaluate and monitor to be able to come out with good evidence to point out that it has been effective. “So our main aim is not just about being effective today, but then the disinfection is a measure put in place that must be carried out periodically so that the day that the government of Ghana will say Covid-19 is no more in the country, you and I can heave a sigh of relief and say that yes we have defeated Covid together,” Mr Djangbah stated. He used the chance to remind Ghanaians, and in particular travellers coming into the country, to strictly and continuously adhere to the Covid protocols. Information reaching Thinknewsonline.com indicates that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has withdrawn military personnel attached to the office of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin. According to sources, the military personnel were 'without proper procedure' hence their withdrawal. In an official letter signed by the Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, NP Andoh, it said "It is humbly request that the personnel are withdrawn with effect from 14th January, 2022" The statement further added that efforts are being made to regularise attachment. Residents of Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District woke up this morning to a very disturbing news of the death of a trader at one of its markets. According to sources, the trader who is yet to be identified was found dead beside his wares. Due to limited space in the central market, some traders have inculcated the habit of sleeping inside the market every Thursday night in order to secure a selling space on Friday. The Nkrankwanta District Police Commander together with the Assembly member for the area, Honorable KBY helped in picking up the dead body for further investigation. It’s however unclear about what actually killed the man. However, some of his colleagues said the deceased sells to feed his family. The Greater Accra Regional Communication Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has described the attack on a presenter and guests at Radio Ada few days as disgusting. According to the Regional Communication Bureau, it takes serious exception to the incident of vandalism. In a statement signed by its Regional Communication Officer, Jerry Johnson, it said "It is taking a notorious dimension under this government to have Media Houses suffer one abuse or the other for being critical of the government. This indeed cannot be acceptable in any civilized democratic society, and Ghana cannot be an exception" He added that it is an irony to have such barbarism being exhibited under a government that touts the credentials of democracy, of which media freedom is a critical component. "The event at Radio Ada cannot be separated from other preceding incidents in which President Akufo Addo's Pastor, Rev. Owusu Bempah with men believed to be National Security Operatives viciously and violently attacked the offices of Radio XYZ and Power FM without any locus. We cannot gloss over the harassment of one of Ghana's seasoned journalists, Manasseh Azure Awuni, who was hounded out of this country for being critical of the NPP government" "Again, it is on record that, on the 1st of January, 2021 a Citi FM journalist, Umaru Sanda Amadu was embarrassed in public by a police patrol team under the guise of searching for weapons in his car. The arrest and molestation of two other Citi FM Journalists, Caleb Kudah and Zoe Abu-Baidoo on the 11th May 2021 by the National Security Operatives for reporting a story exposing a possible case of financial loss to the state cannot be lost on us" The statement further stressed that owing to these inhuman treatment to suppress media freedom by state institutions, the government of the NPP has a huge responsibility to act swiftly to deflate possible accusations in the act of intimidation exhibited at Radio Ada on the said date. For a people who have only recently been bitten by a snake, it is surprising that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) do not tremble at the sight of a worm. If Fomena 2020 has any lessons for political parties, I thought it should be to ensure that there is one rule for all; that party officers at constituency, regional or national do not play favourites. For their information, many people noticed that at the party’s recent National Annual Delegates Conference in Kumasi, the President waited for his Vice-President for upwards of 30 minutes as the latter was paraded through the streets of Kumasi by some Ashanti Region NPP MPs? Didn’t it (or did it) have anything to do with the aspiration of Dr Bawumia to be the party’s flag bearer? All of this should be no big deal, all things being equal. Unfortunately, all things are not equal. President Akufo-Addo may have meant well in putting brakes on his appointees’ speed to announce their presidential ambitions. One person who is rumoured to be a casualty of the President’s fiat is Mr Joe Ghartey, immediate past Railway Development Minister. If his presidential ambitions did cost him his job in Akufo-Addo’s second term, so be it. But why not Bawumia and to some extent, why not Alan Kyeremateng, whose interest in the 2024 presidency was unveiled by the President himself during a visit to Manhyia? Christianity and Islam both preach fairness. Rotarians teach us that before taking any step or making any statement, we should ask ourselves: “Is it fair to all?” Today, some people may be feeling invincible but that is when the wise will remember that the big timber that felled seemingly invincible giants almost always began as a speck. Remember Fomena 2020! Perhaps, I am wailing louder than the bereaved. I got this impression when I spoke with Joe Ghartey on phone earlier in the week. Not a word of criticism against NPP’s chessboard machinations. He refused to “declare” his flagbearership ambition but he didn’t need to do that. I came away convinced that Essikado, where he has been MP for five terms, the Western Region, from where he traces his matrilineal ancestry and Central Region, specifically Winneba, where his father hails from, will have a son of the soil on the ballot paper at NPP’s presidential primary next year. He is not Ashanti and does not claim Ashanti as a World Bank but I know that his daughter has married into Ashanti royalty. Unflappable, as he has always looked, he did not wince when I reminded him that Bawumia and Alan seemed “unbeatable”; nonetheless, he had an announcement for everybody in the party: “Anybody who thinks it is a done deal for Bawumia or Alan is fooling himself”. Assess I attempted to assess Joe Ghartey? I haven’t seen an accusing finger pointing at him for corrupting himself in his many years as the longest serving Attorney General of Ghana and his four years as Minister for Railway Development. To accusation that he could not complete the railway development programme in four years, he says: “Today’s railways are built with the technology of airlines. It costs a minimum of US$5 million to lay only one kilometre of rail tracks. In Ghana, we are doing 3,000 kilometres! Negotiating US$15 billion with investors is a painstaking process, especially investors who insist on putting their nationals in key positions at the expense of Ghanaians”. Nonetheless, he says the records are there for all to see. “Under me, we took the first critical steps. I succeeded in changing the country’s rail lines from narrow to standard gauge”. His critics complain that Joe Ghartey is too straight; that he will not bend. To this, he replied, “President or no President, I want to be able to look Ghanaians in the eyes, like Prophet Samuel in the Christian Bible and say, I didn’t use Ghana’s money on myself. “But what is Presidency all about? Why don’t we aim to build a nation where no one needs a godfather to survive? To be straight is to ensure that people without godfathers are given the chance to get a job, to eat and to survive?” There goes Joe Ghartey. In law, he is an impregnable fort. He was one of NPP’s legal brains that wrote the 1993 Stolen Verdict. He recalls: “At a time when there were no computers, my wife and I looked for a typist to type the entire document. A group calling itself the concerned NPP supporters in Central Region has called on the leadership of the party to shun what they call selective justice. According to them, the hypocrisy in the party would affect the NPP in the 2024 elections, if nothing is done about the situation. At a press conference in Cape Coast, the Spokesperson for the group, Samuel Yaw Adjeibi- Kesse, said if everyone in the party is not given an equal opportunity, the NPP would suffer the consequences in 2024. According to him, a number of grassroots members are being side-lined and are not treated fairly in the party. “We are here for all the grassroots members of the party, who have suffered one form of unfavourable discrimination or the other. We are all card-bearing members of the New Patriotic Party who are extremely disturbed by recent developments in our party. We have come together to express our concern about the current animal farm kind of leadership some National and regional executives of the party have demonstrated, which, if not checked immediately, can affect our chances of winning the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections”, Mr. Adjeibi-Kesse lamented. He indicated that “the General Secretary of our party, Mr. John Boadu, released certain rules to regulate the conduct of the upcoming internal elections of the party, relative to the behavior and conduct of the would-be aspirants and their supporters, with particular emphasis on the presidential primary, and violators of the rules were to be dealt with in accordance with the party's disciplinary procedures.” Samuel Yaw Adjeibi-Kesse continued that “a number of high–ranking members of the party have openly violated the rules and regulations by declaring their support for the Vice President, Dr. Alhaji Mamoud Bawumia, who has left nobody in doubt of his ambition to become the party's presidential candidate.” “Prominent among these party officials who have blatantly violated the party's rules and regulations are as follows: Deputy General Secretary of the party, Mr. Obiri Boahen, the Northern Regional executives led by Chairman Samba, the first Vice Regional Chairman of Ashanti, Mr. Kwabena Nsenkyire, the Member of Parliament for Karaga, Hon. Amin Anta, the Member of Parliament for Tolon, Hon. Habib Iddrisu, and Hon. Farouk Mahama, MP for Yendi.” He further stated that even though the actions of the officials and senior members of the party clearly violate the party's code of conduct, none of these blatant violators has been called to order by the National Executives of the party. But “in an animal-farm selective justice fashion, when supporters of other aspirants, particularly Alan Kyerematen, a founding member of the party, try to stand their ground and protect their own, they are either immediately rounded up by security agencies or subjected to acts of intimidation and senseless suspension”. The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural resources, in charge of Lands and Forestry, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio ( MP) has announced that government through the Ministry will henceforth approach the combat against illegal logging and Chainsaw operations in the same measure as galamsey is being dealt with. Hon. Owusu-Bio told the media when he led a team on a fact finding Mission on Thursday, 13th January, 2022 to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of claims of illegal mining and logging ongoing in some forest reserves in Sefwi Wiawso of the Western North Region. Hon. Benito accompanied by officers and Board Members of the Forestry Commission and the Sefwi Wiawso Omanhene, visited a number of these reserves in Tanoso Shen, Asanti Nkae and Kokooso to see for himself the extent of illegalities in the area. On arrival to some three illegal sawmill set ups close to the forest reserves and owned by the operators, the Deputy Minister ordered for the immediate demolishing of the structures and seizure of all movable equipments at the grounds. He bemoned that having witnessed the gravity of the illegal logging and Chainsaw operations, he believes that they cannot solve such a canker in just one visit and gave the assurance that his outfit and the Board will make arrangements to visit the region again to ensure that they alay the fears of the Forestry officials and send out a stern warning to the operators. He said " We are going to put together strategies and we will be back again and this time it will not be only to Sefwi but to Ahafo and all the other places where these illegal loggers hide, we will burn all these if we have to, just to ensure that we bring their operations to the bearest minimum" Speaking to the media, the Member of Parliament for Atwima-Nwabiagya North constituency, Hon. Owusu-Bio applauded the officials expecially the Youth In Afforestation team for their efforts and support to the Commission so far. He further disclosed that Government has given the clearance to employ more officials to help in the fight and soon they will have more forest guards and rangers to join the combat. He also sent out an advise to Forestry officials in the area and farm owners to guard and prevent the reserves from wildfires in this dry season. " We are in the dry season and therefore we must beware of Bush fires. To the farmers, be sure not to set fires whatsoever because they can turn into bigger fires putting our reserves in danger." The District Manager of the Sefwi Wiawso Forestry Commission, Mr. Raymond Obeng Boamah, on his part disclosed that there are three main illegal activities happening in the reserves, " and they include illegal logging, illegal Chainsawing, and illegal farming is also prevalent here.". He explained that the illegal operators are dangerous, armed to the teeth and operate with impunity. "These guys who operate in the reserves are armed with all sort of weapons, being guns, machetes and all other means that they use to perpetuate their crime." " Anytime our officals confiscated any of their machines, they go to the extent of beating them up and kidnapping them to use as ransom to get back their equipments" He added. Mr. Obeng said their activities is really degrading the forest reserves and if something is not done immediately, it will soon deplete the entire reserve. He also mentioned that their pressing request is for safety and pleaded with the Board and Deputy Minister to bring in the assistance of the police and the military and also beef up their guards and rangers. The manager again disclosed that there has recently been a struggle among these illegal operators which led to the death of one of the illegal loggers whose name and Identity is not known. Due to the bloodshed around the reserves, the Omanhene who was on the trip ordered for a purification rights to be performed before the team entered the reserve for the inspections.
