A Former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ghana, Rt. Rev'd Prof. Emmanuel Martey has described allegations that he has stopped commenting on national issues as untrue. He said he is still vocal but he has adopted a different approach in communicating on issues going on in the country. Delivering a public lecture at the 140th anniversary of the Ascension congregation in Koforidua, Rev. Martey said he still speaks on national issues, but only through text messages. “Rev. Prof Martey is still speaking but has changed the style. Those I need to communicate with them I communicate. Sometimes through text messages and a lot of things have happened because of my intervention. So I’m still speaking" “You know the revelations, practice and procedure of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the spirit of our constitution is that the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has only one representative to speak on behalf of the church and that person is the moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana not past moderators, but serving moderator" “And for me, my understanding of leadership is that, especially the church’s setting leadership is like a relay race when the baton is given to you, you run as fast as you could and when you get to the next person, you hand over the baton and stop running. If you hand over the baton and you continue running, anyone who does that is mad,” Martey said. Rev. Martey was very vocal about economic and governance challenges during the John Dramani Mahama administration. However, since President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won in 2016, he has been silent. Anita De Soso, a member of the NDC called out Reverend Martey for his hypocrisy in 2020. According to her, Prof. Emmanuel Martey is a hypocrite because, under the erstwhile John Mahama administration, he consistently attacked his personality and tagged his leadership with corruption but has kept quiet under the crippling administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. "I'm disappointed in Very Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey for saying pastors and Christians should stay away from Politics. In 2016 Prof. Martey was always insulting and attacking former President Mahama, what has changed now? Residents within the Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions should prepare for another downpour tonight. This is according to the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet). Highlighting the towns, the Agency mentioned Cape Coast, Accra, Akyem Oda, Ho and Takoradi, among others. The Agency also forecast that thunderstorms will accompany the rain. As such, it advised residents within the listed places to take precautions. Touching on the weather for the afternoon, GMet said there will be periods of sunshine. Meanwhile, it has been a wet morning in parts of the capital. According to the Agency, the morning rains will affect Aflao, Bolgatanga, Nalerigu and Wa. Again, GMet has predicted more torrential rains in the Greater Accra Region. The Agency explained that it is because the peak of the rainy season is approaching. Already, Accra has recorded two flooding incidents in four days. Following hours of rain, parts of Accra and other urban centres in the Greater Accra Region, including North Kaneshie, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and Kasoa in the Central Region, were flooded. The phenomenon obstructed traffic flow on some major roads in the capital. Ghanaians took to Twitter to share videos of flooded areas after Saturday and Monday’s rain. The Privileges Committee of Parliament will later today, May 26, 2022, begin sittings in relation to the matter of absentee MPs in the house. The Speaker made a referral to the Committee after it emerged that 3 MPs had absented themselves for more than the 15 days acceptable threshold without permission. The Committee has two weeks to present a report to the House. The MPs concerned are Ayawaso Central MP, Henry Quartey, Dome Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, and MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong. The Ranking Member on the Privileges Committee, Kweku Rickets Hagan said the hearings will not be held in public. “We are going to hear all of them out before we put the report together. The report will be comprehensive. The sittings, however, will not be made public.” A former Member of Parliament for Kumbumgu Constituency, Ras Mubarak, petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to deal with the matter of absenteeism in the House. He cited Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo; Henry Quartey, the MP for Ayawaso Central, and Ebenezer Kojo Kum, the MP for Ahanta West and Ken Ohene Agyapong, MP for Assin Central as MPs who he said had flouted provisions of Article 97(1)(c) of the Constitution and Parliament’s Standing Order 16(1) which frowns on Members absenting themselves for 15 sitting days without permission from the Speaker. Per Article 97(1)(c) of the 1992 Constitution, a Member of Parliament shall vacate his seat “if he is absent, without the permission in writing of the Speaker, and he is unable to offer a reasonable explanation to the Parliamentary Committee on Privileges from fifteen sittings of a meeting of Parliament during any period that Parliament has been summoned to meet and continues to meet.” Story by: Edna Agnes Boakye

The Appiatse Support Fund has received donations from the Accra Mining Network (AMN) and Political Zone, a Canadian Voluntary Organisation as their contributions towards the reconstruction of the Appiatse community. A donation of GHC6,000 was made on behalf of the Accra Mining Network by the General Secretary Madam Ellen Korley at a brief event on Wednesday, 25th May, 2022. Presenting the donation, Madam Ellen Korley said they deem it a noble act to give and so upon hearing the explosion incident at Appiatse, they took it upon themselves as a Network of professionals to contribute a token to support the people of Appiatse. Mr. Justice Amekudi, the Organising Secretary of the AMN also added his voice and suggested to the Support Committe that just as the committe is volunteering to solicit funds, a communique should  be sent out to various mining institute to solicit volunteers for the reconstruction project. Mr. Hopeson Adorye, the leader of the delegation from Political Zone presented an amount of GHC5,000 as their widow's mite towards the rebuilding and rehabilitation of the Appiatse Community. In a remark before the presentation, Mr. Adorye said their donation is a complication of contributions from people from all walks of life on Facebook who were informed about the incident through their lead Volunteer, Mr. Felix Appiah Korang, a political commentator based in Canada. He added that "our contribution may be small, but I believe that the quantum does not really matter, what matters is the hearts it comes from and these people who gave were really touched to give." Receiving the donation, the Chairman of the Committee, Rev. Dr. Joyce Aryee noted the suggestion from the AMN team and assured that she will ensure the implementation team takes it up to help reduce cost of construction. She disclosed that the Fund has been able to raise about 40million cedis, however the amount is not enough to reconstruct the entire community saying "we wouldn't want to start and not complete, that will not be diligent of us and so we will continue to solicit for the funds until we have enough" She also mentioned that latest by June this year, the Committee will put out new strategies to solicit more funds for the Reconstruction Implementation Committe to start their work. She also called on Ghanaians and others in the diaspora to give generously saying " just as our tagline suggests, Obiaa ntua bi and when we say Obiaa, we mean Obiaa so regardless of who you are or how much you can give, we are always ready to receive it for this worthy cause" Mrs. Antoinette Tsiboe-Darko, a member of the committee also gave a heart appreciation to the donor companies saying "it's been a while we received donations so for us to receive two in a day, gives us hope to keep on working. The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Benito Owusu-Bio has sent a strong warning to some 270 forest wildlife guards to use the weapons provided them for its intended purposes only and not engage in any criminal activities. According to him, the forest wildlife guards should use the weapons to protect the forest, wild animals and themselves. Speaking at the passing out ceremony for some 270 forest wildlife guards in Accra, he said "Use your weapons for the very reason for which they were given to you and that is to protect the forest, wild animals and yourselves and not for any criminal activity" The Deputy Minister also charged the forest wildlife guards to also make good use of the training and discipline they have acquired. Benito Owusu-Bio reminded them that although it is challenging task, he is confident that with regular training, the guards will be able to overcome any obstacle(s). Thinknewsonline.com has gathered that the 270 forest guards from the wildlife division of the Forestry Commission of Ghana underwent an 18 day military training at the Asutsuare Military Training Camp. The trainees went through some physical training activities such as weapon handling, dismantling and reassembling of guns, target shooting and Tae-Kwan-Do training defence among others. Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio expressed his appreciation on behalf of the Sector Minister, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor and the Forestry Commission for training the guards to such a high level of discipline and physical strength. In other developments, the Deputy Minister also called on all to support in the tree planting exercise slated for June 10, 2022. He stressed that about twenty million (20,000,000) tree seedlings will be planted on that day across the country. He appealed to the public to partake in this year's exercise. The Coastal Development Authority (CODA) under the $1 million per constituency has commissioned four (4) school projects in three (3) constituencies in the Central Region to augment the educational projects being constructed by the government. The projects commissioned include a 2-unit kindergarten block with ancillary facilities at Edukrom in the Agona West constituency; a 6-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Osedzi in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam constituency; a 3-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Breku in the Assin North constituency; 3-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities in the Assin North constituency. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CODA, Lawyer Jerry Ahmed Shaib in his speech explained that the projects are being funded under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP). He further disclosed that there are several educational projects being constructed within the Coastal Development zone and would be commissioned soon. He advised parents to ensure that they invest in their children’s education since that is the only way to empower them for a better future. According to him, most developed countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea, have come this far, in terms of development, due to their committed efforts in investing in the education sector. The German Government is cautioning the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to keep up its vigilance and increase monitoring at the various borders of the country. The caution comes at the back of the recent terrorist attacks happening in neighbouring West African countries. Speaking at the handing over ceremony at the premises of the headquarters of the Ghana Immigration Service in Accra on Wednesday, the Deputy Head of Missions at the German Embassy, Hans-Helge Sander (MBA) said "Keep up its vigilance and increase the monitoring of the borders. We all know that not all border crossings are official border crossings" "And with the situation developing as it is, I think vigilance and surveillance of the borders are two of the very crucial efforts to have a full picture of what is really happening in order to keep Ghana, the safe place that it is" He also added that it is important that the Document Fraud and Expertise Centre of the Ghana Immigration Service be equipped with logistics to help boost their day-to-day activities. The Ga Mantse, Boni Nii Tackie Adama Latse Il is calling on government to rescind its decision by immediately withdrawing E.I. 144 to protect the ecological integrity of the capital's (Achimota) forest. According to the Ga Mantse, the Achimota Forest Reserve is the only major existing greenbelt left for Accra and its environs, adding that such a decision will affect the ecological integrity of the Forest and its protection of the water bodies and its natural environment. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has denied reports suggesting the detection of monkeypox in the Western Region. A social media post had alleged that the country had recorded its first case of monkeypox in the region. The GHS has thus asked Ghanaians to disregard such reports. Over 200 cases of moneypox have been detected worldwide. The cases are fast spreading across non-endemic areas including Europe and America. Monkeypox is caused by a larger group of viruses known as the Orthopoxviruses Smallpox. Vaccinations against smallpox provide protection against monkeypox, however mass vaccinations against Smallpox were discontinued in 1980 after the WHO said it had been eradicated. As part of efforts to address the shortage of agro-chemicals, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has announced that the government was proactively working with local fertiliser producers to produce quality organic fertilisers on a large scale for farmers across the country. According to the sector Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, organic agriculture has taken a huge premium on the international market, adding that the mass production of quality organic fertiliser will make Ghana less dependent on inorganic fertiliser. Dr. Afriyie Akoto was briefing journalists following a stakeholder meeting with local fertiliser producers on the production and promotion of quality organic fertilisers domestically in Accra on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. He attributed the ‘acute shortage’ of agro-chemicals generally, and fertilisers in particular, to the war between Russia and Ukraine, amid the international sanctions on Russia. These developments, he said, were breaking the supply chain of fertiliser and making global trading very difficult which Ghana was no exception. “In a catastrophic situation, you have to be able to adapt and come out stronger. So we feel that we need to encourage the production of quality organic fertiliser domestically,” he averred. He noted that from January to May this year, there has been a sharp drop of the amount of fertilisers distributed to farmers in this country, and lamented that “that was nothing to write home about. However, Dr. Afriyie Akoto believed that in the wake of the challenge above, a significant amount of organic fertiliser production was possible in the country. “We will have a close collaboration with local producers of organic fertilisers to see how we maximise your businesses to help us bridge the fertiliser gap, if not completely, at least we make the effort to bridge a higher percentage of the fertiliser requirement,” he assured. He urged the local organic ferrliser producers to avail themselves of the opportunities presented by the government to boost production to meet the fertiliser need of the farming population. “We are prepared to work with you with our extension officers. We have the capacity in teaching the farmers on how to adopt and apply these organic fertilisers. And given the opportunity out there, I believe you can supply more,” he confidently said. He also encouraged the local producers to convince their foreign partners to come and set up fertiliser plants in the country. Furthermore, Dr. Afriyie Akoto indicated that Ghana was abound with loads of raw materials for fertilisation which included garbage and fauna. He applauded the efforts of particularly Zoomlion Ghana Limited for investing hugely in using waste to produce organic fertilisers. The demand for fertiliser in Ghana, he said, was about 600,000 metric tonnes. “And so far this year, we haven't even done a 100,000 metric tonnes. So we are way way off,” he bemoaned. …We are actively searching for solutions to ensure that farmers are supplied with the right chemicals,” he said. According to the minister, the essence of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) is basically to grow farm productivity, especially on smallholder farms. “And I believe we have been very successful with this programme in the last 5 years that I have been in charge of the ministry by targeting fertiliser and improved seeds for distribution to farmers,” he said. He said the Russia-Ukraine war which has put asunder the global supply chain of fertiliser was “severely restricting” the PFJ programme and depriving more farmers of the benefit of modern technology of seed and fertiliser. He said for the last three-four years, his outfit has had a “good extension” service, adding that this has led to a high subsidy by the government on fertiliser. “At the peak of 2020, we had 1.6 million farmers on the programme which is only less than half of our farming population in Ghana. But it has had an impact in spite of all the attempts by our adversaries to put some dent on the achievements that this government has made in agriculture. The Managing Director of Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), Mr. Michael Padi Tuwor, who was present and spoke to the media on the sidelines of the meeting, described the engagement with the minister as “very fruitful.” He indicated that as an investor he now has a clear understanding of the market, calling for more of such stakeholder engagements with MoFA. Responding to the question of whether there was unhealthy competition amongst the industry players, he said: “We must always expect competition, and it must be a healthy one for the common good of the country.” Again on the issue of fake products on the market, Mr Tuwor suggested that there should be a baseline or standard by which products must be required to meet before sent onto the market. “When this is done it will help check imitations or fake products on the market,” he advised. To this end, he encouraged stakeholders in the industry to work together to produce to meet the national fertiliser need of 600,000 metric tonnes. A Regional Workshop on the validation of the Ecowas Draft Petroleum Code opened in Accra on Wednesday morning at the Mensvic Grand Hotel. This Workshop comes on the back of ECOWAS' initiative to provide the region with a regional petroleum code. This regional Code will enable Member States to attract more investments, ensure healthy competition between stakeholders within the same country and between the States of the region and promote the integrated and dynamic development of the oil sector in our community. Opening the workshop on behalf of Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Deputy Director, Downstream at the Ministry of Energy, Mr Ali Nuhu Abaka said Petroleum exploitation activities are the subjects of particular attention in terms of regulations. Apart from production sharing contracts, which are the most widely used in the region, the Petroleum Code is the fundamental piece of legislation for the promotion, exploration and production of hydrocarbons. He further indicated that these reforms have contributed to increased investment in the sector with the allocation of fourteen (14) oil blocks in our sedimentary basins, and have led to several hydrocarbon discoveries in recent years. These include: Afina-1X, Akoma-1X, Eban-1X and Nyankom-1X discoveries. “As you know, Ghana is not the only hydrocarbon producing country in the region. Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger also produce oil and very soon Senegal, which has discovered large quantities of natural gas in its sedimentary basin. Our region will therefore play a major role in the global energy context in the coming years. In order to capitalize on this opportunity, we must strengthen regional cooperation and promote a regional market for hydrocarbons” he said Mr. Abaka reiterated that the Code, which is intended to be innovative, will integrate thorny issues such as transparency, environmental protection, increased government revenues, the development of populations living in production areas, and the creation of added value throughout the value chain. The next three days will see Experts from the Ministries in charge of hydrocarbons in ECOWAS Member States, representatives of national companies and agencies in charge of hydrocarbons as well as key stakeholders contributing to producing a comprehensive code for the growth and advancement of respective petroleum industries in the sub-region. The Minister for National Security, Albert Kan Dapaah says he is confident that the various security agencies in the country will clamp down on activities of terrorists if they try to attack Ghana. The Minister made these pronouncements after he paid a courtesy call on the National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu at his Palace in Accra on Tuesday. The courtesy call was to officially inform the National Chief Imam about the newly launched ‘See something, say something’ campaign which is aimed at creating an awareness for Ghanaians to be on the lookout for terrorists or their deadly attacks in the country. Speaking at the Palace of the National Chief Imam, the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah said “This morning, we have found it important to organize an event to update the citizens about the security situation in the country. Specifically with respect to the threat we feel as a nation. Some terrorists who are operating in our neighbouring countries in the West African Region” “The terrorist threat in the region has been going on for a number of years. We have always been aware that, it is a threat that can hit us in our country. As a result of that and for many years, we have been organizing ourselves to ensure that we will be able to prevent any attack. I am confident that the terrorists will not be able to subdue the country’s security forces in its own territory" “But in recent times, some of their activities in Burkina and especially Togo has given calls for concern. He also revealed that the terrorists have attacked neighbouring Ivory Coast, Benin and Burkina Faso. He hinted that Ghana and Togo were the only countries that had not been attacked until the terrorists penetrate into Tog, causing lots of troubles. “In the work that we do, we do not allow ourselves to be overtaken by fear and panic. This is because, we have full confidence in our security and intelligence agencies” “But because of the way the terrorists operate, they will be able to spring a surprise at any time and it is for this reasons that we decided to call a message to all Ghanaians that there is this possibility and there is this threat” “In providing security for our country and ensuring the safety of all people in our country, we need the security agencies. But security must necessarily be a whole of society approach” “Security cannot be limited to government alone, the individual must also help to fight for security for him/herself.” “So today, we have appealed to Ghanaians that there is this possibility, the security agencies are working hard on it but we want everybody to be part of the process of protecting this country” The Minister noted that the efficiency of the security and intelligence agencies very much depends upon the information and intelligence received from the general public. “We want people to volunteer information” The National Security Minister appealed to Ghanaians to support all the security agencies to make the awareness campaign, a fruitful one. He pledged his support and assured the National Security Minister that he will relay the information to the subjects across the country. He stressed that he will ensure no one goes under the disguise of Islam to commit any deviant behaviour in the country.
