President Akufo-Addo has said that the late former president John Evans Atta Mills, whom he describes as his contemporary, friend and “the man from Ekumfi Otuam”, will not be forgotten by the government and people of Ghana, having died in 2012 while serving in office as president of Ghana. Addressing guests at the tenth-anniversary memorial thanksgiving service for the late former president, as well as the unveiling of Mills’s tombstone and recommissioning of Asomdwee Park, where his mortal remains are buried" President Akufo-Addo said Professor Atta Mills deserves every honour that the nation can possibly bestow on him. “We were contemporaries in the University of Ghana; members of the same hall, the premier hall of the university – the hall of gentlemen, Legon Hall,” President Akufo-Addo said. “We played in the same university football team and, as fate would have it, we ended up belonging to and leading different political organisations" “We contested the presidency in 2008 and even though some will say it does not count, I won the first round and he won the second round, the round that really mattered." “I was looking forward to the third round in 2012 when the Almighty called him home on 24 July 2012,” Akufo-Addo said. Deterioration and rehabilitation Concerning Asomdwee Park, President Akufo-Addo noted that some time after becoming president, he became aware of “the sad state of Asomdwee Park and in 2020”, he “received a request from the late president’s energetic communications director, Koku Anyidoho, who runs the institute named after the president, for the assistance of government for the rehabilitation of the facility”. “I agreed and subsequently, I instructed the Coastal Development Authority to undertake a thorough rehabilitation of the park with close collaboration of the institute. It was not right that the park had been allowed to deteriorate considerably over the years since his burial in 2012,” President Akufo-Addo said. “I am happy that it was under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, allegedly his fiercest critic, that Asomdwee Park has been elevated to a status befitting the final resting place of a president of the Republic of Ghana,” he added. NDC divisions On divisions in the National Democratic Congress concerning the construction of a befitting resting place for the former head of state, President Akufo-Addo said he rehabilitated Asomdwee Park with the sole intention of honouring the memory of Atta Mills and nothing else. “I did so with that objective solely in mind, and not to exploit or take advantage of any so-called division in the political party to which he belonged. “Those alleged divisions are not of my making and do not in any way inure to my benefit,” President Akufo-Addo said. Allegations of desecration President Akufo-Addo remarked that there have “been unfortunate allegations levelled against the government about the supposed desecration of the tomb of the late president in the process of rehabilitating the park”. “Nothing could be further from the truth, and it is good to note that these false, malicious statements have been firmly dispelled and debunked by the Coastal Development Authority through the agency of its chief executive officer, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, in a public statement under his hand,” Akufo-Addo declared. The homily In his sermon, on the scriptural foundation of Revelation 7:9-17 (KJV), the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, the Most Reverend Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo, urged Ghanaians to emulate the life example and virtues of the late president, such as his incorruptibility, love of God and pursuit of peace. Most Reverend Boafo said that every Ghanaian, no matter where he or she finds himself or herself on the social scale, must endeavour to live a life keeping in mind what will be said about them after their death. Gratitude The founder and chief executive of the Atta Mills Institute (AMI), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, recalled his relationship with the late former president in a solemn speech. Anyidoho said that he made a personal pledge to the late president never to forget him in life and in death, and it is that pledge which motivates him in his quest to establish a lasting legacy in memory of John Evans Atta Mills. “The God I serve hates ingratitude, so God forbid that I show ingratitude. Your Excellency, Mr President of the Republic, I, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, say thank you for making Ghana proud via the construction of Asomdwee Park. “The credit goes to you and nobody shall share nor take that glory from you,” Anyidoho said. CODA mission accomplished The chief executive officer of the Coastal Development Authority (CODA), Jerry Ahmed Shaib, told guests that two years ago President Akufo-Addo tasked CODA to carry out, on behalf of the people of Ghana, a fitting renovation of Asomdwee Park, where the mortal remains of the late John Evans Atta Mills lie. He said that, following the president’s directive, work started in July 2020. “I am pleased to report that work has been completed as we hand over the project today,” Shaib said. “The completion of Project 446 (Asomdwee Park) [marks] approximately 60% of the 741 projects being executed by the Coastal Development Authority since 2020, with the remaining 40% at various stages of completion,” Shaib announced. The man, Atta Mills John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills was born on Friday 21 July 1944 in Tarkwa. After his basic education in Prestea Huni Valley and Komenda, he entered Achimota Secondary School, where he had all his second-cycle education from Form One to Upper Sixth. John Evans Atta Mills studied law at the University of Ghana (LLB 1967), the London School of Economics and Political Science (LLM 1968) and the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), completing his PhD dissertation on taxation and economic development in 1971. While studying for his PhD at SOAS, he was also a Fulbright Scholar at the prestigious Stanford University in the United States of America. On his return to Ghana, he taught law at the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, where he remained for 25 years. It is on the record that he was the person who introduced the study of tax law at the Faculty of Law. He also taught commercial law at the School of Administration of the University of Ghana. He served further as a lecturer at the Ghana School of Law (Makola) and Ghana Institute of Taxation, as well as other institutions of higher learning. Professor Atta Mills also sat on a number of boards and committees, occasionally acted as a visiting professor in the United States, Netherlands, Canada and other countries, and published extensively on law and taxation. He eventually left full-time academia (but retained a number of teaching engagements) to begin a distinguished public service career when he was appointed as acting commissioner of Ghana’s Internal Revenue Service in 1988, eventually becoming the substantive commissioner in 1993. Still in the arena of public service, Professor Atta Mills, consummate sportsman and sports administrator that he was, held sports-related positions at various points, such as acting director of the National Sports Council, vice-chairman of the Ghana Olympic Committee, acting chairman of the board of directors of Accra Hearts of Oak, vice-chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association, and chairman of the Black Stars management committee. In 1996 John Evans Atta Mills was chosen by President Jerry John Rawlings to be his running mate on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Victory by the NDC in that year’s election allowed Professor Mills to take office on Tuesday 7 January 1997 as the second vice-president of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. In the build-up to the 2000 general election, Vice-President Mills emerged as the flagbearer for the NDC but the scales tipped in favour of the New Patriotic Party’s John Agyekum Kufuor, who became the second president of the Fourth Republic on 7 January 2001. After a second try in 2004, he contested again in the December 2008 election and this time victory smiled on him. John Evans Atta Mills was duly sworn in as the third president of the Fourth Republic of Ghana on Wednesday 7 January 2009. He was also the first ever former vice-president to have moved up to the highest office in the land, president of the Republic of Ghana. On, Saturday 7 July 2011 the NDC re-elected President Atta Mills to be the party’s candidate in the 2012 presidential election. However, as fate would have it, he passed on to glory on Tuesday 24 July 2012, a little less than five months before the elections were held. Professor Atta Mills loved God and manifested this love in many ways. Most memorably, as president of the Republic of Ghana, he launched a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving which took place at the Independence Square in Accra each year between 2009 and 2012. For the record, during his time in office, he was the only Fulbright Scholar anywhere in the world to have been elected president of any country. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed that 34 persons have contracted the new monkeypox virus in Ghana. According to the Health Service, the monkey pox as at 15th July have reached the new 34 confirmed cases with no death recorded at of the same date. The World Health Organization on Saturday declared the international monkeypox outbreak a global emergency, a decision that underscores concerns about rapidly spreading infections sparked by the virus. Speaking during the Information Ministry's Meet the Press Series, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye stressed that, the virus which has mainly affected male has the Greater Accra Region as the region with most affected cases. He stressed that, the GHS has intensify its education and contact tracing to ensure that the virus is brought down as he urged Ghanaians to quickly report any symptoms as soon as possible. On the issue of Marburg virus, Dr Kumah Aboagye noted that, the confirmed cases still stand at 1 with 2 other recorded yet to be confirmed as they are under testing. He added that, they are enhancing the contact tracing exercise to ensure that, the virus is curtailed. The Director-General added that the Marburg virus is more dangerous than ebola. He stressed that although Marburg Virus is similar to Ebola, it is more dangerous than ebola. "Marburg Virus kills faster than Ebola" he added. The Director-General also cautioned the public to avoid over crowded places. On implementation of several interventions with focus on three regions ; Ashanti, Savannah and Western, he noted that a cumulative list of 118 contacts in 3 districts in the 3 regions were identified "Ashanti- 50; Savannah- 48 and Western- 20. 19 of the contacts were Health Community Workers (HCW) ; 99 were close family members or household/community contacts" "All contacts have completed the mandatory 21-day follow-up as of the 21st of July 2022". Dr. Kuma-Aboagye revealed that one close contact reported symptoms after the maximum incubation period Tested positive together with his close contact (yet to be corroborated by IPD). He noted that the individual died on 21st July 2022. The Director-General also said "Currently, 40 additional contacts have been identified in the Savannah Region and are being followed up 11 of the 40 contacts are Health Care Workers. Daily monitoring of temperature and general health and wellbeing being undertaken by healthcare staff in the affected district" On the total covid-19 vaccine doses administered, he said, "As May 31, health persons had recorded 15,496,852; on June 30, it stood at 17,409,005 and on July 20, we are at 18,396,070" Ghana is currently facing three public health emergencies; Covid-19, Monkeypox and Marburg Virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. The decision was announced Saturday morning after WHO convened its second emergency committee on the issue on Thursday. Monkeypox spreading in 'cluster events,' but vaccines can help stop it, local health officials say. "I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Saturday morning. Tedros said while the committee was unable to reach a consensus, he came to the decision after considering the five elements required on deciding whether an outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. He added that while he was declaring monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern, "For the moment this is an outbreak that's concentrated among men who have sex with men, especially those who have multiple partners, that means that this is an outbreak that can be stopped with the right strategies in the right right groups." WHO initially stopped short of declaring the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern after its first emergency committee meeting on June 23. At the time, Tedros said the emergency committee advised that at the moment, "the event does not constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern" but acknowledged the "evolving health threat" that WHO would be following extremely closely. In series of tweets sighted by Thinknewsonline.com, the users reminded the Ministers of how he and his fellow colleagues in the NPP jabbed Former President Mahama and the NDC, calling them, liars, thieves and corrupt. Mirpuri tweeted "In April 2019, Wontumi told Ashh FM Mahama's father, the then Agric Minister in Nkrumah's administration, a very corrupt man who mishandled state money and stated that Mahama followed in his footsteps to become a thief. Did he have evidence to accuse the ex-President? Hypocrisy?" Lawyer and Former Aide to Former President Mahama, Joyce Bawah also tweeted "When you screamed on all platforms calling a sitting President all sorts of names, it was ok then! Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, sometimes all I really want to say: what is good for the goose is also good for the gander, but then again to what end! Learn to take criticism!" Reacting to various tweets, another user, N.B.A replied "I suggest the President's lawyers press charges against him. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will on July 24, mark the 10th anniversary of the passing of the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills at the Asomdwee Park in Accra. According to the NDC, the celebration which marks the beginning of a year long series of activities, will be heralded by a wreath laying ceremony and a church service in honor of the great leader. In a communique signed by the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, he said "This event will be followed by a Commemorative public lecture under the theme: The Man John Evans Atta Mills – Ten Years On, to be held on Tuesday 26th July, 2022 at Accra International Conference Center at 2pm" The release added that the dress code for both events is the 10th anniversary cloth or any white dress. On July 20, the Executive Director of Economic and Organised Crime Office, Maame Tiwaa Addo-Danquah opened a course on the operationalization of the Asset Recovery and Management Standard Operating Procedure and Leadership with sponsorship from GIZ Governance for Inclusive Development Programme co-funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO). The Deputy Executive Director of Operations, Nana Antwi at the opening ceremony mentioned that since EOCO has been chosen out of all the law enforcement agencies to be the hub for Asset Recovery and Management, it beholds on EOCO to build capacity of its officers make this additional responsibility a realty. The representative of GIZ, Mr. Sampson Kwakwa thanked the Executive Director for the opportunity to sponsor the development of a policy, implementation strategy and Standard Operating Procedure on Asset Recovery and Management. He further noted that the reason the world loses so much money when it comes to crime is as a result of law enforcement agencies’ inability to manage assets that become the subject of investigations. He was particularly excited that all key stakeholders were represented and contributed their expertise to the development of the three documents. He encouraged Management of the Office to ensure that the document becomes a living one which would stand the test of time. He wished all participants well on the training. The grave of the late President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills has dominated the headlines lately following the verbal exchanges between his family and Koku Anyidoho regarding the renovation of the grave ahead of his 10th-anniversary celebration. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the founder of the Atta Mills Institute, Koku Anyidoho, was accused of tampering with the grave of the late President at Asomdwe Park, Accra by Mr. Samuel Atta Mills, the late President's junior brother. Mr. Mills alleged that the Coastal Development Authority (CODA) and Mr. Koku Anyidoho desecrated the tomb of the late President. He further described the action as a breach of culture. Mr. Anyidoho, who has responded to the allegations on several occasions, added in an interview with Accra-based Adom TV on July 23, monitored by Modernghana News, that President Mills was a national asset. He said the former president’s death was mourned by the whole nation and not just his family alone. “All I'm saying is a certain president died, and we all mourned as a nation... On the day of his burial, it was the Ghana flag used to cover his casket. We played a national anthem and gave him a befitting burial as a commander in chief of the armed forces,” he stated. He stressed, "And even in the Bible when high priest Eli died, it was Samuel who succeeded him, not his sons (Hophni and Phinehas). I'm also Samuel. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is confident that Chief Justice, Justice Kwasi Anim Yeboah, is likely to go down in history as the worst Chief Justice of Ghana since the inception of the 4th Republic. According to the NDC, his reign as Chief Justice has been characterized by unimaginable administrative abuses. Addressing Journalists in Accra on Friday, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said "These abuses are thrown into sharp relief when the conduct of the current Chief Justice is measured against the professionalism and conduct of former Chief Justices." "We recall in particular the words of Chief Justice Kwasi Apaloo at his send-off ceremony that: The one great quality I would wish to see in my colleagues is courage that is to say they should be in a position to defend to the death positions they believe to be right" "I charge you to keep or help keep the flag of the judiciary flying and may the profession as a whole provide leadership and best counsel on these professional matters which we have all held in trust for the benefit of generations yet unborn". The General Secretaryadded that it would appear that the wise counsel of Chief Justice Apaloo has no resonance with the current Chief Justice, who has failed to show leadership and to keep the flag of the judiciary flying by abusing his power to empanel the courts. "It has been our understanding that the setting up of divisions of the High Court in Accra such as the Criminal Division, Land Division, the Human Rights Division, and the Commercial Division were all meant to ensure that these specialized courts deal with matters that directly fall within their competence and jurisdictions" Mr. Nketia stressed that these courts started very beautifully and many were those who hailed the establishment of it. He noted that incidentally, in recent times these beautiful arrangements appear to have been thrown into a state of utter confusion where Ghanaians could now witness even land cases being sent to commercial courts, clear-cut commercial court cases being sent to the human rights court and criminal cases sent to the judges at the Land Division. "Sometimes the assignment of cases to particular judges is done in a manner that makes one wonder what is the motivation for the case assignment" "Recently, the case involving Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson was originally assigned to Justice Solomon Oppong Twumasi only for the judge to announce in open court that the Chief Justice had reassigned the case to another judge in another division of the High Court" "Another worrying phenomenon is the appointment of Court of Appeal Judges to preside over High Court Cases, For us these appointments are a damper and go a long way to demotivate our judges at the High Court" "By these appointments, is the Chief Justice saying that the said cases could not have any competent Justice of the High Court as currently constituted to deal with them or it is more the case that the Chief Justice has a cadet of justices who are specially deployed to do the bidding of his political masters? Without mincing words, we state that we see the appointments of Court of Appeal justices to preside over these cases as worrying" The NDC says it is saddened by and gravely concerned about the phenomenon of unreasoned judgments, lack of fidelity to the record of cases. It added that it is also worried about the unpardonable factual errors that have become commonplace in judgments of the apex court as well as glaring administrative abuses by the Chief Justice. "We were particularly shocked by the palpable blunders committed by the apex court in the election petition judgment. In a case of such magnitude, we expected excellence, professionalism, attention-to-detail and meticulousness from our Supreme Court" "Instead, what the people of Ghana obtained from the court were these unpardonable blunders, which have the potential to affect people's confidence in the administration of justice" The NDC, therefore, calls on the Judicial Council to institute an internal inquiry to ascertain the reasons for these blunders and appropriate recommendations made to the Chief Justice. It added that the institution will forestall their recurrence until appropriate legislation, such as a Judicial Proceedings Bill, is passed by Parliament to regulate the writing of judgments by the various courts. The NDC stressed that it will also petition Parliament for the Judiciary Committee of the House to conduct a public inquiry into the reasons for the blunders committed by the Supreme Court in the 2020 Presidential Election Petition and other cases with the view to proposing appropriate remedial legislation. A forty-five (45) man delegation led by the Commandant of the Nigerian Naval War College, Rear Admiral Akinwande on Tuesday 19th July, 2022 paid a working visit to the Economic and Organised Crime Office in Accra. The delegation was met by the Executive Director of EOCO, COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah. She welcomed the members of the delegation and thanked them for their visit. The Commandant of the College expressed how glad they were to visit EOCO. He expressed his appreciation for the reception accorded them by COP Addo-Danquah and her Deputies. He said the purpose of the visit to Ghana was opportune especially because of the roles played by the two countries in the sub-region with respect to piracy and maritime crimes. He added that considering the role of EOCO in the fight against organised crimes it was the right institution to visit and interact with. Mr. Leo Antony Siamah Esq. made a presentation to the delegation foccusing on the history, objects and mandate of EOCO. Mr. Abu Issah Esq, Head of Legal in addition took the Naval Officers through the confiscation of Assets as well as Assets recovery. He mentioned that EOCO has a very effective collaboration with other agencies in Ghana and the sub region. He highlighted the existing MOU with the EFCC of Nigeria. The Deputy Executive Director in charge of Operations, Nana Antwi of EOCO mentioned that there is always effective collaboration between EOCO and other agencies when a request from those agencies falls within the mandate of EOCO. On 15th July, the office of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) ended a three week refresher training for its officers in Accra. It was the second in a series of its in-house training for its Officers for the year 2022. Participants for the training were drawn from different Units and Regional Offices. The tailor made training dubbed CONCEPT OF INVESTIGATIONS, was to empower officers on new standards of proceedings in investigations and build their capacity in the fight against economic and organised crime. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Deputy Executive Director, Intel and Monitoring, Ms. Aba J Opoku, urged the beneficiary officers to apply the knowledge they have gained during the period of training to their work at their various stations. Executive Director, COP Maame Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, in her speech stated that she was keen on providing tailor made training for Officers because they require special training in order to be well equipped to work and achieve maximum productivity. She assured the Officers of the inclusion of a health talk in subsequent training programs to help them better manage the stress they face in their daily work. She also thanked the Officers for availing themselves to be taught and reiterated the need for them to apply and share the knowledge and skills they acquired when they go back to their various stations. The Founder and Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, together with some prominent members of his family, on Thursday (July 21, 2022) called on former President John Agyekum Kufuor. The visit, which came off at the Peduase residence of former President Kufuor at Aburi in the Eastern Region, was to officially extend an invitation to him for the funeral and burial of the late father of Dr. Siaw Agyepong—Opanyin Samuel Kwame Agyepong. Obomeng Aduana Abusuapanyin Barima Osei Berko, who led the delegation of bereaved family members of Dr. Siaw Agyepong, thanked former President Kufuor for sympathising with them during the one week observation of Opanyin Agyepong. “Not long ago, we respectfully came to inform His Excellency about the passing of our father—Opanyin Samuel Agyepong. But in spite of your busy schedule, you delegated somebody to represent you at the one week ceremony of our late father. We are truly grateful to you, Your Excellency,” he expressed. He said the family met after the one week observation to agree on the date for the burial and funeral of Opanyin Agyepong. “And so we are here to formally inform you of the funeral arrangements, and also officially invite you to the funeral ceremony,” the leader of the delegation said. According to Abusuapanyin Osei Berko, the funeral of the late father of Dr. Siaw Agyepong will be held on Saturday (September 10, 2022) at the forecourt of the State House, Accra. “And in the afternoon on the same day the family will accompany the mortal remains of Opanyin Agyepong to Kwahu for interment,” stating that the funeral will then continue at the forecourt of the State House from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm,” he noted. He continued that on Sunday, September 11, 2022, a thanksgiving service will be held in memory of Opanyin Agyepong at the Teshie Nungua Estate branch of the Church of Pentecost, adding that “this was where the late Opanyin Agyepong attended church while he was alive.” “That same Sunday, after church we will continue with the funeral at his residence at Teshie Nungua Estates,” Abusuapanyin Osei Berko informed former President Kufuor. On his part, former President Kufuor thanked the delegation for the respect accorded him especially by the chiefs of Obo and family members of Dr. Siaw Agyepong. He commended Dr. Siaw Agyepong for his relentless contributions towards the progress of Ghana, stressing that his name has become a household name amongst children, youth and aged of this country. Former President Kufuor said by dint of hard work, Dr. Siaw Agyepong’s services have reached other African countries. He assured the delegation that God willing on 10th September, the date for the funeral, he will try and attend to commiserate with the family of Dr. Siaw Agyepong.
