The original World Cup trophy arrived at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Saturday, September 3 for a two-day tour. Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku, and other officials were at the airport to receive the trophy. David Trezeguet, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, is leading the trophy tour of Ghana and appeared ecstatic when he arrived on Saturday morning. For the first time, the trophy is travelling to all 32 nations that have qualified for the tournament, with Ghana serving as the current stop. The tour will conclude in Doha, Qatar, just days before the start of the World Cup on November 20, 2022. Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba has accused the government of deception regarding the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) programme. He said the trainees were made to believe that they would be given permanent jobs after enrolling in the programme but that has not been the case. This is a mark of deception, he said on the New Day show with Johnnie Hughes on TV3 Friday, September 2. Mr Amaliba asked the government to pay the arrears and also apologize to the trainees for the delay in paying them. “Pay them for the eleven months arrears and an the end of the day apologise to them,” he said. A Deputy Communications Officer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kamal Deem Abdullai also said NABCO have the right to demand what is due them as far as their arrears are concerned. In his view, even if they are even owed one month, they have the right to demand for the payment. “I am putting myself in the shoes and I empathize with them, they have the right to demand that the government pays them and government must do the needful,” he also said on the New Day show. “Where I have a problem is that, even if the NABCO trainees are owed one month, they have the right to demand what is due them,” he stressed. He further indicated that the government had good intention for introducing the programme. “They should also understand that it was for good intention that the government of the NPP brought the NABCO initiative,” Kamal said. The initiative came to an end on Thursday, September 1, 2022. This was announced earlier by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta. Presenting the 2022 budget statement to Parliament on July 25, Mr Ofori-Atta said “Mr. Speaker, our iconic Nation Builder’s Corps (NaBCo) programme, which was initially to run for three years and extended for an additional year, will be completed by 1st September 2022. The programme which engaged a 100,000 young graduates has prepared thousands of them for the world of work. So far we have invested approximately GH¢2.2 billion,” the Finance Minister told Parliament. Mr Ofori-Atta added that “As they exit, the current cohort on the programme are encouraged to take advantage of the YouStart initiative and other existing programmes in our drive to build an entrepreneurial nation.” Kamal Deen further indicated that the government has no apology to render for ending the programme. “Let us come and apologize sincerely to them for the non payment of the salaries but government owes no one apology for ending the programme,” he said. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo left Ghana on Saturday, September 3 at the invitation of Ban Ki-Moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the Board of Global Centre of Adaption (GCA), to participate in the African Adaptation Summit to be held on Monday, September 5 at the GCA Headquarters in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The Summit is expected to garner further support and resources for the region’s flagship Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP). The programme is realizing the vision of the Africa Adaptation Initiative by mobilizing $25 billion of investments by 2025 for climate adaptation in food security, resilient infrastructure, adaptation jobs and climate finance. At the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, His Excellency Mark Tutte, President Akufo-Addo will from Tuesday, September 6 undertake a working visit to, amongst others, hold bilateral discussions with his Dutch counterpart, aimed at strengthening the ties of co-operation that exist between the two countries. The Police have arrested 42 suspects during the Ashiaman to the World concert held on 3rd September, 2022 at the Saka Saka park in Ashiaman in the Greater Accra Region. The suspects who are being held for various offences, attacked some of the funs with toy guns, cutlasses, knives, scissors and other offensive weapons at different locations towards the end of the concert. Items retrieved from them include 2 Toy pistols, 10 mobile phones, 5 cutlasses, 5 jack knives, 3 Pairs of scissors, 1 wig and a tablet. Information reaching Thinknewsonline.com indicates that fire has gutted the private residence of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor. According to sources, only one room was burnt. The Ghana National Fire Service upon tip-off rushed to the Adjiringanor residence and managed to quench the fire. Management of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), is cautioning residents living in the five Northern Regions, Northern parts of the Oti Region and the Afram Plains of the Eastern Region to move to higher grounds or safe havens to avoid disasters following the spillage of the Bagre and Kompienga Dams in Burkina Faso. According to NADMO, the consequences of the spillage downstream in Ghana is the possible overflow of the banks of the White and Black Volta. In a statement sighted by Thinknewsonline.com, it said "The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) will like to inform the general public especially those living in the five Northern Regions, Northern parts of the Oti Region, The Afram Plains of the Eastern Region to take note that the Authorities of Burkina Faso-SONABEL, Managers of the Bagre and Kompienga Dams, have yesterday 1 st September, 2022 at 9:00am, opened the valves of the Bagre Dam and thus have begun the spillage of excess water in the dam in order to save the dam. The Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare has revealed that women in policing are impacting significantly on law enforcement practices in diverse ways across the country. According to the Chief of Staff, the encouraging momentum towards creating a more balanced public safety service is fueled in part by a growing appreciation of certain unique and cherished qualities that women often bring to law enforcement. Speaking at the 70th Anniversary Climax Parade of Women Policing In Ghana in Accra, she said "One critical area where women in law enforcement can make a difference is in addressing violence against women and sex crimes" Quoting a study conducted by the University of Zurich, Madam Osei- Opare revealed that as female representation increases among officers in an area, violent crimes against women in that area reduces, and female related domestic violence cases become more frequently reported. "The study further asserts that women are relatively less likely to use excessive force in solving crimes. They also help to improve Police-Community relations, and possess superior problem-solving skills. They are very skillful in intelligence gathering and its management and are perceived by communities as being more honest and compassionate" She added that in recognition of the significant role played by women and the importance of their participation in peace operation, United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1325 (2000) and 2214 (2015) has called for the doubling of the number of uniformed women. "Pursuant to this, the Police Division has undertaken several measures that have resulted in significant increase in the deployment of women Police officers in field missions" "Women Police officers also play a critical role in promoting peace and security by playing crucial role in operations, monitoring and reporting of violations, addressing impunity, and promoting accountability leading to enhanced rule of law, recovery and reconciliation" The Chief of Staff also, mentioned that the Police Administration has developed a new Client Service Delivery Strategy aimed at enhancing service delivery and improving Police-Community relations guided by the core values of integrity, civility, professionalism, respect for Human Rights, transparency and accountability, and responsiveness and partnership. The pull-out method, also known as the withdrawal method, is a way to go. Although not reliable, it’s a better option than taking no precautions. It’s also an option for couples who are open to the possibility of pregnancy. As the name implies, in pulling out, one partner takes his penis out of the other partner’s vagina before he ejaculates. By doing this, fewer sperm travel through the vagina and cervix. The male partner can then deposit the sperm anywhere else. Although this may sound easy, it does require control and timing. If the male partner can’t feel that he’s about to ejaculate or if he’s too caught up in the moment, he might not pull out in time. Whether pulling out is a legitimate form of birth control is the topic of extensive debate. However, it does lower the likelihood of pregnancy to some extent. If you want to avoid getting pregnant and catching an STI, the safest option would be using a condom and pulling out simultaneously. How to pull out correctly For the pull-out method to work correctly, it has to be done right every time you have intercourse. Before the male partner orgasms, he should pull his penis from the female partner’s vagina and ejaculate elsewhere. This is essential, as even a small amount of semen can lead to pregnancy. Here are some tips for how to pull out correctly: Use a spermicide cream, gel, or foam to kill the sperm before they can swim toward the uterus. Place the spermicide deep in the vagina, close to the cervix. Follow the instructions to make sure spermicide is applied properly before sex. Keep track of your fertile days using an ovulation calendar. During these days, it’s best to use something besides the pull-out method to avoid pregnancy. Ovulation calendars can also help you to get to know your body by detecting physical and emotional patterns. Before intercourse, have your partner pee to clear out any sperm. After your partner ejaculates, make sure there’s no semen on your upper thighs or groin. Sperm on these areas of your body may migrate inside your vagina. Does pulling out work? How effective is the pull-out method when done correctly? For the pull-out method to be effective, both partners should keep sperm away from the vulva and vagina every time they have sex. Pull-out method statistics show that out of 100 women who use the pull-out method perfectly, four will get pregnant. In general, 27 women whose partners pull out get pregnant out of 100. (To compare, roughly 15 out of 100 couples who use condoms get pregnant.) Couples who don’t use any birth control method have an 85-percent chance of pregnancy. In general, the pull-out method is unreliable, and health care providers consider it ineffective compared to other options. If you are on birth control, do you have to pull out? Birth control pills protect against unwanted pregnancy. These pills can be up to 99.9 percent effective when taken correctly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mini pills and combination pills have seven-percent failure rates with typical use. This means that seven out of 100 women will get pregnant while using birth control pills. Although birth control pills are statistically more effective than pulling out, there’s no harm in using both. However, birth control pills and the pull-out method can’t prevent the spread of STIs. Benefits of the withdrawal method There are several benefits of the withdrawal birth control method, which include: It is free and available at all times. When you use the pull-out method, you and your partner don’t have to spend money or prepare anything before having intercourse. Anyone can use it at any place and at any time. Although most people need some practice to get it right, pulling out is always available when needed. It also might be an option if you forgot to buy a condom or left your birth control pills at home. It has no side effects. Unlike some prescribed birth control options, pulling out involves no nausea, vomiting, or increased appetite. It makes other forms of birth control more effective. When combined with a condom or birth control pills, the pull-out method can decrease the chance of an unplanned pregnancy. Risks and disadvantages of the pull-out method Of course, the pull-out method does come with some disadvantages too: It’s not effective. Other birth control methods can be more effective (e.g., birth control pills and IUDs). It requires practice. Men often have trouble pulling out when they’re close to climaxing. It’s tricky to do correctly. Many couples can get caught up in the moment and fail to pull out in time. Men, especially if they’re younger or inexperienced, can lack the self-control needed to pull out at the height of sexual pleasure. It can only prevent pregnancy, not protect against STIs. Three officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at the headquarters in Accra, who had resigned were still on the payroll by the Comptroller General. The situation resulted in the payment of unearned salary of GH¢99,843.64 to the said officers. This is contrary to Regulations 88 of the Public Financial Management Regulations, 2019 (L.I. 2378). The disclosure was contained in the 2021 Auditor-General’s report. The former immigration officers who continued to draw salaries from the service are: The A-G recommended that the Comptroller-General should recover the amount of GH¢99,843.64 from the officers involved. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has admonished students to resort to “negotiations and dialogue” rather than to violence, which results in destruction of property. “I am not quite sure who benefits from that,” he wondered. “I can’t see that anybody benefits from that kind of behaviour.” President Akufo-Addo gave this admonition at the Jubilee House, where newly elected leaders of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) called on him. The leaders were at the Presidency to introduce themselves to the President and also to thank him for some of the pro-students policies implemented by his government. Addressing the student-leaders, President Akufo-Addo bemoaned the recent use of violence by some students in expressing their grievances, saying it is “distressing” “It’s distressing to wake up or to hear that students activities which ought to be, normally, without violence end up in halls fighting each other and destroying properties.” He, therefore, called for dialogue where “everybody puts their card fully on the table” President Akufo-Addo commended NUGS for helping “to find solutions to the problem and not have to resort to violence”.
