A 2-month-old baby boy’s arm has been amputated to save his life after his father broke the toddler’s arm because he was disturbing his sleep. According to pulse.ng, the Nigerian man identified as Confidence Amatobi is currently on the run after committing the heartless crime. It is reported that the suspect fled his home after breaking his little son’s arm, and calls are being made for his arrest to answer for the crime. The baby was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, Imo State capital, where the affected hand was amputated. Uka Ukachi, the Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Imo State, who visited the infant and her mother at Ward 13, FMC, Owerri, called on public-spirited individuals to come to their rescue. "The man is on the run. The boy’s hand has been amputated. He is at the FMC, Owerri. We want the father to answer for his crime. We demand his arrest. The kid needs justice,” Ukachi stated. The NHRC boss gave an assurance of the commission’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of the innocent toddler who has been subjected to unwarranted pain, and her heartbroken mother. He also entreated well-meaning individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the poor baby and his mother. Chiefs and Residents of Beppo, a mining community in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region have assured of their resounding and unflinching support to the fight against illegal mining following an extensive and fruitful engagement with the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker. The assurance which was conveyed by the Tufuhene, Nana Bretuo II follows a dispassionate call made on them by the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Mines, Hon. George Mireku Duker. In an address during a Stakeholders Sensitization Engagement against illegal Mining event on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, Hon. Mireku Duker evoked the sense of communism and nationalism in the traditional authorities and residents against galamsey. Making reference to the destruction of the community’s river by galamsey operations which is a tributary of thr Ankobra River, Hon. Mireku Duker protested that the larger community must not bear the brunt of the greedy few and thus want the residents to rise up against illegal mining. He sensitized them on the harmful effects of galamsey and appealed to them to declare zero tolerance for illegal mining. Hon. Duker explained to the community that the 1992 constitution has empowered them to arrest all persons whose actions are detrimental to the community and the country and that time has come for the community to arrest illegal miners whose actions are causing irreparable damage to the environment. He therefore called the chiefs and residents to action whiles pleading with them to ensure an immediate end to all forms of illegal mining activities. The Tarkwa Nsuaem MP clarified that the Akufo-Addo government is not against small-scale mining but wants to purge the sector of harmful practices in view of the employment opportunities it provides to Ghanaians. He said government has a number of alternative livelihood sources available to persons who opt out of illegal mining. “Because of greed, we are destroying our country and our future. It’s a shame. It’s a shame that some of our chiefs have sat aloof for our river here to get destroyed. It's sad and shameful. Because of gold, we are destroying the river that feeds into the Ankobra. We must all be responsible" “Large-scale mining companies in Ghana employ about 30,000 people but small-scale employ about one million Ghanaians so I’m completely against banning small-scale mining. My government is also against banning small-scale mining. What is important is that we mine responsibly and protect it so that it helps us and does not kill us" “If our chiefs and the general public agree to resist any form of illegal mining, there is no way anyone can do it. Our constitution permits citizen arrests. You don’t have to be a police officer to arrest someone who is doing something harmful to the country. We all have to come together and agree that irresponsible small-scale mining must stop now. Let’s all do this for our community and the country,” he said. The Chief Inspector of Mines at the Minerals Commission, Mr. Kofi Adjei educated the public on the dire consequences of illegal mining. Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Lands and Forestry, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio has on Wednesday, 26th October, 2022 commissioned 70 Yamaha cross-country motorbikes to be distributed for forest range supervisors and forest guards in the various forest districts in Ghana. The motorbikes, procured by the Forestry Commission are to support the transportation needs of the guards and also to monitor illegal activities in the deep parts of the forest reserves. The Deputy Minister indicated that forest guards are faced with challenges everyday and it has become necessary that they are given all the logistics needed to help their patrols in the forest reserves. He continued saying "we don't have the full compliment of Staff to mann all the forest reserves and so the few there must be assisted as much as possible for them to do their best" He further lauded the Commission for procuring the motorbikes from their internally generated funds while charging them to use the bikes for its intended purposes and also ensure regular maintenance. Mr. Sulemana Nyadia, a Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Forestry Commission receiving the keys to the bikes, expressed the Commission's gratitude to the Deputy Minister for commissioning the motorbikes while noting that the logistics received will go a long way to support their operations. He asserted that the traditional Forestry work is faced with new challenges such as illegal mining and illegal logging and the tools recieved has come timely to ease their work. In furtherance, the show put so many smiles and joy in the hearts of the audience, with the help of the melodious symphonies performed at the concert. Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor has on Tuesday, 25th October, 2022 courted the support of the leadership of the Ghana Christian Council to help government halt the illegal mining menace in the country. Describing the engagement with the Council as a productive, impactful and useful one, Hon. Jinapor said the meeting with the Christian leaders is in line with the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s quest to mobilize a broad-based national support for the ongoing fight against illegal mining. He said the overarching outcome is the Council agreeing to work together with government to address the illegal mining situation. "We need strong and authoritative voices to be able to transform the hearts and minds of the Ghanaian people,” he stated. The Finance Ministry has denied reports that its Sector Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, has resigned from his position. It follows reports from some traditional media and social media outlets that the Minister has resigned. This action was said to have taken place after a meeting with President Akufo-Addo. About 80 Members of Parliament from the majority side yesterday October 25, 2022, demanded the resignation of Mr. Ofori-Atta, saying, he has failed to live up to expectations for worsening the economic situation in the country. But persons close to the minister and some senior officials at the Finance Ministry have told Joy Business that the reports are untrue. They argue “the public should disregard rumors of the resignation of Ken Ofori-Atta”. "It is Ofori-Atta’s diligence and credibility that has engendered so much goodwill towards Ghana by our bilateral partners; and caused the IMF to fast-track our Programme negotiations. Indeed we are on course, working round the clock, and have spent all of today [October 25, 2022] at Jubilee House, engaging various stakeholders on our economic recovery”, they pointed out. “We are in this together and we will surely overcome. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced a ban on nationals from twenty (20) African countries seeking to visit Dubai. The countries are Ghana, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Cameroon, Nigeria, Liberia, Burundi, Republic of Guinea, Gambia, Togo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Benin, Ivory Coast, Congo, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Comoros and Uganda. This banned was because many who arrive on visit visas end up overstaying in the country illegally. They work in the country without legalizing their stay. This is not the first time Ghana and other African countries have been barred from traveling to Dubai. Travelers would have to wait until further notice when the ban has been finally released. Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo are prepared to part ways following a recent fallout between the player and manager Erik ten Hag. However, the method of the 37-year-old’s Old Trafford exit remains up in the air. 90min understands that as it stands, and despite Ronaldo leaving the substitutes’ bench before the full-time whistle during United’s win over Tottenham last week, both parties are prepared to wait out the remaining three weeks of domestic football prior to the World Cup before firm decisions are made. United play two Europa League games against Sheriff and Real Sociedad, three Premier League matches against West Ham, Aston Villa, and Fulham, and a League Cup tie – also against Villa – before Ronaldo is set to travel to Qatar with the Portugal national team in mid-November. United have a number of other first-team players who are expected to take part in the tournament. It’s expected that Ronaldo will return to the United fold – if it’s agreed with Ten Hag following the fallout – and play a squad role before the tournament begins, though the pair are expected to meet at Carrington to plan out Ronaldo’s involvement – or lack thereof – in the coming weeks. Ronaldo is United’s highest earner but is out of contract at the end of this season, and it’s nigh-on certain that he will depart the club at some point in 2023. United would consider releasing the player on a free transfer ahead of the January transfer window but this isn’t seen as an ideal option, as it would come at the great expense even if the departure was mutually agreed. United are also already short in front, and losing Ronaldo would leave them with limited options in that department. 94-year-old, Amou Haji was believed to skip bath times for more than half a century died on Sunday, local media reported. Although Amou Haji was not his real name, it is emerging that it was given to him by the villagers. According to a local official, Haji was extremely scared of falling sick thus, he avoided taking a bath. IRNA further reported that it was just a few months that the villagers took him for a bath in a nearby washroom.
