A delegation from Wongpanit Pathong Company Limited, a leading Thailand and global waste management company, has called on the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah, in Accra. The meeting, which came off on Friday, February 24, 2023, was facilitated by the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), led by its Executive Chairman, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong. The Wongpanit delegation, led by their President, Dr Somthai Wongcharden, briefed the Minister on the company's operations. According to Dr Wongcharden, Wongapanit focuses mainly on recyclable materials, but added that “right now we are also developing through non-recyclable waste from the municipal solid waste, so we also work on landfills.” “We collect waste from various households and then transfer them to our recycle facilities,” he said. He pointed out that a key success factor of the company was first to think of the needs of the market, then “we tailor our products and services to meet the demands of the market.” Dr Wongcharden, who spoke through an interpreter, noted further that they were into urban mining of waste, saying that the company mines waste from the cities. “We work as a private company but we have also connections with the government of Thailand,” he admitted. Furthermore, the President of Wongpanit Pathong Co., Ltd., disclosed that his company manages hazardous waste that were recyclable such as car batteries, electronic waste (e-waste) among others. “We are also into recycling of car batteries, used car recycling. We also work with Mercedes Benz Thailand to destroy damaged cars,” he said. He revealed that Wongpanit Pathong Co., Ltd., has 2,334 branches across Thailand, adding that the company has branches in Cambodia and the United States of America and other parts of the world. The branches in the United States, he said, were doing very well. The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah, warmly welcomed the Wongpanit delegation, and expressed joy at the Thai investors’ interest in Ghana. “I must say that you are with the right person and the right company (making reference to Dr Siaw Agyepong and his Jospong Group of Companies),” she told the delegation. She commended the Jospong Group of Companies for its growth in the recycling space. “But I am sure you [Wongpanit Pathong] are older and bigger as a company so the mutual working together will be highly profitable,” she positively stated. In the light of the above, the minister challenged the Jospong Group of Companies and other interested private companies to explore the possibility of investing in the recycling of used vehicles. “It will be very interesting for the Jospong Group of Companies and other interested private companies to explore investing in the space of recycling of used vehicles,” she urged. She underscored that this was a new area which holds prospects for companies and investors, stating that it is interesting to learn that the Thai waste management company was into recycling of used cars. “We have a lot of damaged cars sitting in the police stations; a lot of used tyres gather mosquitoes, especially during the rainy season, and this is a very interesting area,” she said. Mrs Dapaah seized the chance to appeal to both foreign and local investors to come and invest in Ghana’s waste management space, underscoring that Ghana produces about 7 million tons of waste a year of which about 64% is organic. She averred that the collaboration between the government and the private sector was yielding “huge results.” “…and I must say that we are on the right path,” she admitted. One of such major collaborations, she said, was the construction of recycle plants in all the 16 regions of the country" “And as I speak we have 2 of 3 liquid waste management companies that are also ready. One has been commissioned and we have 2 more coming up,” Mrs Dapaah said. These waste management facilities, she said, were made possible through the government’s collaboration with the JGC. Mrs Dapaah re-affirmed the government’s policy of teaming up with the private sector to spur the country’s growth, insisting that “without the private sector we will not succeed.” Later in the day the delegation toured some of the facilities of the JGC within the Greater Accra Region. These were JA Plant Pool, Sewerage Systems Ghana Ltd., Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECoP). Presidenrmt Akufo-Addo is expected to deliver the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on March 8, 2023. This is in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution which stipulates that the President shall at the beginning of each session of Parliament and before the dissolution of Parliament deliver a message on the State of the Nation to Parliament. The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, mentioned this when he presented the Business Statement for the week ending March 3, 2023. The State of the Nation Address is expected to amongst others highlight government’s key policy objectives and deliverables for the year ahead as well as the achievements of the government and challenges faced. The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin announcing the rescheduled date of the presentation in Parliament said, “The day of the SONA, initially the Business Committee announced 28th February 2023, after that I, in particular, saw that the 28th February was not a suitable day”. “So I personally got in touch through the Majority Leader, Ose Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu with H.E the President, and after an extensive discussion, it was shifted to the date to 8th March. It was for a good reason that his Excellency, the President finally agreed to the 8th March. We both had to agree to sacrifice some other assignments to do the SONA on the 8th of March,” he said. According to the NDC, the four persons who have picked up the forms are Former President John Dramani Mahama, former Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, former Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu and businessman, Ernest Kwaku Krobea. Asdressing Journalists, Chairman of the Election Committee and Director of Communications of the NDC, Kakra Essamuah said "The flagbearer hopefuls are expected to fill out the forms and return them to the National Democratic Congress headquarters between March 20-22, 2023" He also disclosed the party, opened nominations for presidential and parliamentary primaries from February 22-24. Mr. Essamuah also revealed that picking up of forms for aspiring parliamentary candidates will end at 12 midnight of February 24. The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) has a national dialogue with some key stakeholders on the fight against violent extremism and terrorism. The event which came off at the Alisa Hotel, saw the various stakeholders taking turns to share key factors which contribute to violent extremism and terrorism as well as ways to curbing the menace. Spokesperson of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu revealed that Ghana has not prepared enough to deal with violent extremism and terrorism. He stressed that until the country becomes united, it can never deal with the worrying menace. Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu charged the NCCE to intensify its education on violence stressing that will help rescind the ideas of persons who are willing to offer themselves to terrorist groups to be used for dangerous missions. On her part, Deputy Programme Head/Conflict Management Programme at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Afua Lamptey told the gathering that about one billion weapons are in the hands of persons living in the world. Expressing worry, she revealed that most of the weapons are in the hands of persons noted for deviant behaviours. She stressed that although worrying, she is confident that a united front will help prevent and contain violent extremism from entering Ghana. Madam Lamptey added that Ghana is surrounded by country who are suffering from the activities of terrorists. She hinted that the various security agencies have to beef up in order to contain and prevent violent extremism from penetrative into the Northernmost border communities in Ghana. Taking his turn, Director, NCCRM, Col. Joseph K. Merdiemah assured that the various security agencies have intensified measures at safeguarding the country. Executive Secretary, Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose commended the NCCE for organic the national dialogue. He added that the Christian Council through evangelism has been preaching against violence. He was optimistic that the course will yield a good result. Team Leader, COGINTA- Ghana, Rev. Fr. Clement Aapengnuo expressed worry over how violence has destroyed some countries. He pleaded with the youths not to avail themselves to these terrorists. Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD), University of Ghana, Dr. Afua Yakohene noted that the prevention and containing of violence was a shared responsibility. Director, National Counter Terrorism and Fusion Centre of Ministry of National Security, Col. Tim Ba- Taa-Banah (Ph.D), entreated the general public to make good use of the 'see something, say something' campaign. He added that further education will help the public share relevant information to the security agencies. Head of EU Delegation to Ghana, Ambassador Irchad Razaaly thanked the NCCE for its continuous partnership and was confident that views shared will help prevent and contain violent extremism and terrorism in the Northernmost border communities in Ghana. Former Black Stars player, Charles Taylor has hit hard at the Ghana Football (GFA) followings its plan to retire the number (7) jersey in honour of late Christian Atsu. According to Charles Taylor, the plan is needless. Speaking on an Accra-based television, he said "Retiring Black Stars Jersey number 7 in honour of Atsu is needless!" He added that even Maradona’s shirt is not retired. "When was the last time he Atsu was invited to the National team?" He suggested the building of a monument in honour of the player. GHOne TV Presenter, Serwaa Amihere is unhappy over some teachers who have been setting up their students for ridicule on social media. The On-Air personality has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to curb what is becoming a growing practice on social media. Serwaa Amihere recounts how some teachers post funny videos of their students online. "Recently, there is a practice where some teachers in schools in Ghana, record an interaction between their pupils and put it on social media for likes and engagements," she said. She emphasises that "if such videos were highlighting the challenges these school children go through to access education and seek help for them, I wouldn't have a problem However, these videos make mockery of these kids who either struggle to express themselves in English or other areas". In a series of tweets, Serwaa Amihere has called on the GES to put in measures to stop the practice as she states that it goes a long way to affect the confidence of students. "I entreat the Ministry of Education and GES to end this practice by some teachers because it is not right and can destroy the confidence of the kids," she said. "The digital footprints such videos will leave will go a long way to hurt some of these kids and we need to come together with a common voice to end this Let us protect our kids," she concluded. For the third time, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Ms Sophia Kudjordji, has been honoured with a Global Women Leader Award 2023. The GWLA 2023 was presented to Ms Kudjordji in Mumbai, India together with 84 women from 15 countries who were also acknowledged. The recipients were from countries including India Laos Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Oman, Ghana. The rest were Qatar, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Maldives, Mauritius, South Africa, Bangladesh and UAE. In total, 85 women were recognised for their contributions in society in areas of communication, sports, Academia, NGO, Government business and military. This year’s (2023) GWLA marked the 10th anniversary of the global women’s awards. At the event, the WWLC also recognised the strategic and influential role of women leaders in the development of the modern economy, technology, and administrative methodologies, aimed at advancing governance and business organisations. It also identified and celebrated outstanding leadership and achievements demonstrated by women leaders that are reflected by distinct innovations and initiatives. Furthermore, the GWLA encouraged various private and public sectors to promote women leaders, support women empowerment to activate and accelerate the role of working women in institutions through various initiatives. The Government of Ghana through the newly established National Alternative Employment and Livelihood programme ( NAELP) has reclaimed over 1000 hectares of land from illegal miners in the Western North. Dr Carol Louise Donkor, National Coordinator of the Programme visited some of the areas being taken care of by Dredge Masters, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC). The company has successfully reclaimed 450 hectares of land from illegal miners (popularly known as Galamseyer) in the Western North. Dr Donkor reiterated that The NAELP is aimed at alleviating the hardships of people adversely affected by the activities of illegal miners, and also as part of the government’s efforts to sanitise the mining space. The programme also includes a community mining scheme which presents a module for small scale mining in the country. She said the project will create jobs for over two thousand youths in the affected area through the replantation of the lands. It was against this backdrop that Dredge Masters was contracted by the government in 2021 to help reclaim 414 hectares of galamsey lands in Asawinso A & B, Sefwi, Mepasem and Antobia all in the Western North Region. Speaking to the media, the Project Manager for Dredge Masters, Ing. Bernard Asumeng Adjei Saw, said the project was 90% complete. He disclosed that the company was awarded a contract to reclaim 414 hectares of illegal mining lands. “But as it stands now, we have even exceeded the total hectares that we needed to reclaim. We have now done about 450 hectares of in total." According to him, the land reclamation was part of other components of the project, stating that after that, his company will be moving to phase two of the project which is replanting trees on the reclaimed lands. Ing Asumeng Saw commended the government for its efforts to reclaim lands damaged by illegal miners. “The government of Ghana has done a very good work. It has invested hugely to ensure that this damaged lands by Galamseyers are reclaimed and put to more productive use,” he expressed. He, therefore, appealed to the chiefs in the Western North to support the government in ensuring that illegal miners do not return to these reclaimed lands. While pointing out some challenges militating against the project, the Site Manager of Dredge Masters, Gilbert Atima, asked that the various communities within the reclaimed lands be involved in the tree-planting phase of the project. For his part, a Technical Officer for NALEP, Daniel Fordjour Agyemang, indicated that his outfit has a plan in place which will see the involvement of all stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the economic tress that will be planted on the lands. “In no time we will roll all this out for the community to benefit,” he assured. The Chairman of the Small Scale Miners in Juaboso, King George, said the programme has been beneficial to miners in the region. The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) says it will sell oil to Oil Marketing Company (OMC) with more than 45 outlets under the Gold for Oil Program. According to the NPA, the ultimate aim of the government in introducing the program is to ensure that fuel is affordable. Speaking at the meet the press series on Wednesday, the Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Mustapha Hamid said he had a number of calls asking him why first consignment of the oil could not reflect in prices at the pumps. “Now what happened was that of course the 40,000 metric tons is not enough to cause a significant change in the prices. But even so, one of the highest buyers in the gold for oil product in the first consignment was Goil" "Goil’s prices were brought down to about 70 pesewas. Other OMC’s that also bought some consignment of gold for oil gave us a reduction of about 10-20 pesewas that is still not significant though" "So, this time, NPA’s gold for oil team which is led by the deputy chief executive Fred Okudzeto, Sheila Addo, the policy coordinator and there is Abass Tashiti, they’ve come up with a brilliant idea with this second consignment of gold for oil that has come" "We are going to sell to OMC’s with not less than 45 outlets. There are 150 oil marketing companies. If you are selling to all the 150 companies you will not realize the impact,” Mr. Hamid stated. He further said “But if you are selling to the people with the highest number of outlets, then its effect will be felt across the country in terms of the price reduction" "So, this time we are monitoring to ensure that we are selling only to OMCs with the highest presence in terms of number and also the spread of outlets across the country.
