Stella Wilson Agyapong, the wife of famous politician and presidential hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong incurred his wrath in her attempt to shield a supposedly corrupt health worker who exploited a woman at a government hospital. On the account of the Assin Central Member of Parliament, a woman he had met at a public place walked up to him to narrate how a corrupt nurse was pocketing money at a hospital in Ghana. "A woman I meet detailed how a nurse who was attending to her friend's daughter wrote a wrong receipt for her and how she took her on for writing a receipt of GH¢40 when she had paid GH¢250 at the hospital...my wife who was there with me and knowing me very well urged the woman not to mention the name of the hospital to me, that is why I say she's corrupt. I would have easily called out the hospital in today's interview in Kumasi," he disclosed on Sompa TV. The MP who called his wife corrupt also announced that he will be quick to sack her if she carries the same attitude during his time as president of Ghana. "She is corrupt, she used to be very principle when she returned to Ghana from the United States...do you know why my wife is corrupt?...how do you change the nation with this. You want to be First Lady, I will sack you without hesitation with this attitude...was that her attitude when she living abroad?" he quizzed. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BUI PowerAuthority, Samuel Kofi Dzamesi has handed over a renovated 6-unit classroom block to the District Chief Executive of the Banda District at a ceremony held at the Bongase Primary School. The renovation of the classroom block was done in response to a request made by the assemblyman Hon. Peter Dongi and opinion leaders of Bongase through the DCE's office. The project was awarded to a local contractor, Mr. Solomon Mensah of Duapa Construction Limited at a cost of Two Hundred and Fifty thousand Ghana cedis (GHS250,000). In his remarks, the CEO, Hon. Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi highlighted how keen the Authority is, through its Corporate Social Responsibility, in improving the lives of the people in the area and within the district especially in education. He commended the DCE for his relentless effort in ensuring the progress of these communities. He assured all gathered of the continuous support of the Authority, especially in the education of the people whilst encouraging the students to concentrate on their studies. The immediate past Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afri­yie Akoto, will today, deliver a public lecture at the University of Profession­al Studies, Accra (UPSA), on “The future of the economy of Ghana”. The event will see the former agriculture minister share insights into building the agricultural sector into bedrock for financing the development of other sectors of the Ghanaian economy. At an encounter with select­ed group of editors and senior journalists in Accra, on Saturday, Dr Akoto said the potential in the agricultural sector was huge, believing that the sector had the prospect to turn around the for­tunes of Ghana and permanently eliminate the syndrome of going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) whenever there was distress in the economy. Dr Akoto who has set his eyes on the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but is yet to officially declare his intention to contest, noted that at the core of his vision for Ghana when given the nod to lead the party and subsequently becomes the President of the Republic, was the prioritisation of public resources for the agricultural sector. He added, “Look at what our farmers have done with the Planting for Food and Jobs by providing them subsidies – seed and fertiliser? And it is not all the farmers. In 2018, I conducted an agricultural census to count the number of farmers in Ghana which has never been done for 38 years. We came up with 3.1 million professional farmers in this country. Planting for Food and Jobs by 2021 had benefitted 1.7 million professional farmers, which is half of the farmers’ pop­ulation and even with half, look at what has happened to Ghana’s agriculture.“ In 2021, agriculture had the highest growth in the 4th Republic, 8.4 per cent. In the eye of the storm of COVID-19 in the year 2020, when all countries were down, Ghana’s agricultural sector growth was 7.4 per cent. The Planting for Food and Jobs was working and kept Ghana going. "The Ghanaian farmer is a resource sitting and waiting to be exploited and for me, the future of this country is to give incen­tives to these farmers for them to produce the surpluses and foreign exchanges to finance our indus­trial development; our education, our hospitals, health and infra­structure and all those things. We can do it,” he said. The public lecture today, he noted, would shed more light on the success story of the Planting for Food and Jobs and other initiatives executed as political head of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Bui Power Authority, Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi has charged health practitioners and residents of Bui to maintain and keep the newly commissioned Bui CHPS Compound in good shape and condition. He made these remarks while commissioning and handing over a newly constructed Bui CHPS Compound to the community. Speaking at the ceremony, he said "As a community, there is a need for a culture of maintenance and the need to keep this facility in good condition. The lack of maintenance will curtail any assistance being provided by the Authority" "I am happy to inform the gathering, of the Authorities commitment to its responsibility to the well-being of the community and help will always be considered when and if possible" Hon. Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi also spoke about a collaboration between the Authority, Sunyani University and Berlin University for training and exchange programs for Engineering Students. The programs, he explained are estimated at a cost of one million euros (€1,000,000), adding that it will go a long way to train more engineers who can be absorbed into the Authority. He further added that, he has so much confidence in Ghanaians to man and even build more of such dams which is the aim of the collaboration. The quarters’ was built to alleviate the struggles that health workers faced when posted to the Bui CHPS Compound built by the Authority. On his part, Chief of Bui, Nana Kwadwo Owuo II thanked the Authority for its contribution to the total development of the area and the district at large. He was particularly happy that the long-time headache of finding accommodation for health workers posted to his community, has been made less severe by the Authority. He acknowledged the impact the staff quarters for the nurses will have on their overall service delivery. The Ghana Police Service says it has arrested some six persons in connection with the murder of the slain young soldier, Sheriff Imoro at Ashaiman weeks ago. According to the police, the six will be made to appear before court on Monday, March 13, 2023. It will be recalled that late Sheriff Imoro was murdered by some unknown men on March 4 at Taifa Ashaiman, a community in the Greater Accra Region. The unfortunate incident triggered the military to storm the area and discipline the people for the act. In all over one hundred and seventy-five (175) young men were arrested in the process. Ghanaian Actor cum politician, John Dumelo has clapped back at his colleague, Fred Nuamah saying he will lose the NDC primaries at the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency. According to John Dumelo, Fred Nuamah has stabbed in him in the stab following his interest to contest for parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NDC in the constituency. Actor cum Politician, John Dumelo said "This is a stab in the back and he will lose the primaries. I know that for a fact" "If you speak to people and the delegates, they say they want John back so I don't know why Fred is running" "Does he think politics is a joke? Head of Pediatrics and Child Health at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Professor Alhassan Abdul Mumin says five (5) persons have died following suspected measles infections in the region. According to him, the deaths were recorded from November 2022 to March 2023. In an interview with an Accra-based television station, he said "The only reason we still call them suspected cases is that we do not have the laboratory results up to now. We have five cases we admitted with suspected measles. The suspected measles have all the features that you will document for a child or a patient that has measles,” he said He disclosed that noted that “there are still cases that are pending since November last year that we do not have the results back from the testing laboratory.” “So actually, we do have mortality even if they are not confirmed because laboratory results are not available,” he added.   His assertion is contrary to Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu’s claim that no death related to Measles has been recorded. “It is important to correct the erroneous impression that there have been deaths from Measles in Ghana recently. For the avoidance of doubt, there have been no deaths from the recently recorded spike in Measles cases. Indeed there have been no deaths since 2003, though we have recorded cases annually,” the Health Minister assured in a press briefing on Tuesday. But the Head of Pediatrics and Child Health at the Tamale Teaching Hospital insists that some children have died from the disease. According to him, this is not the first time he has seen cases of Measles.. He said in 2013, there was a mini outbreak of measles at Tamale in his 12 years of service and he helped to manage the situation. “I have been in Tamale for the last 12 years … so I know what a case of Measles looks like from the features that they present with and the case definition leaves nothing for ambiguity. So when you see a suspected case of Measles, you are only waiting to get the laboratory confirmation and you can now say that this is a confirmed case of Measles,” he explained. According to the Ghana Police, it was able to arrest the key suspects after a week of sustained intelligence-led operation. The Ghana Police Service took to its ßocial media handle to break the news. Two drivers who ply their trade at Oforikrom, a community in the Ashanti Region have returned a missing GHc200,000 they found in their car to the owner. According to the drivers, since the money did not belong to them, they did not see the need to keep it. In an interview with an Ashanti Regional television station, the drivers said "We had some passengers board our bus from Maase heading towards Oforikrom but on our way, we realised that there were only three passengers left so we pleaded with them and got them another bus" "After they left, we saw a bag at the back seat. We got closer, opened and saw the money. We were contemplating on sending it to the police station but since I do not trust the police, I said no but my brother said, he knew the officer because he was his church member" They added that the owner reported the case to the police of which, the money was handed over to him. A Former Military man and Security Expert, Dr. Ishmael Norman has defended the conduct of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in the wake of the swoop in Ashaiman that led to brutalities being meted out to some citizens. The March 7 swoop as the GAF calls it was to fish for the killers of a young soldier, Trooper Sherrif Imoro, the army said in a statement dispelling claims that the swoop was to avenge the death. In an interview on Metro TV (March 9) Dr. Norman said the army could have gone beyond the threshold that they meted out during the swoop given the gravity of the reason they undertook the mission. “The Ghana Armed Forces conducted itself very well given the circumstances; things could have gotten out of control. I think a lot of the youth in Ghana sometimes do not respect men and women in uniform.“ "I think once in a while, the Ghana Army has the right to flex its muscle and beat up a few people for them to know that the Ghana army is not there for decoration and that if you mess with it, it will mess with you,” he stated. He advanced that in the particular instance, “the perpetrators is not the army, so, what happened was that they didn’t go far enough, they should have gone a little bit further and thrash out more people.” He described the Army as the “last bastion of security and must at all cost be respected.” On the subject of innocent people being caught in the swoop, he responded: “There is always collateral damage and citizens of Ghana must be more circumspect, take precaution and self-control when dealing with all members of the security agencies,” he stressed. The March 7 military swoop Dozens of military officers stormed Ashaiman in the operation that saw some soldiers entering the town in trucks, with an armoured car plus a helicopter hovering over the town. The exercise is said to be in response to the gruesome murder of a young soldier, Trooper Sherrif Imoro, by some unidentified persons on Saturday, March 4, 2023. Videos of the invasion shared across social media show various forms of assault being meted on residents by the rampaging officers who subjected some of the residents to severe beatings. In a statement released in the early hours of March 8, the Ghana Armed Forces admitted authorizing the swoop which led to the arrest of 184 persons, as well as the seizure of suspected illegal drugs. In the said statement, they also acknowledged excesses may have resulted in the swoop but failed to apologize for or commit to conduct a probe on same. The Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has urged Ghanaians to accord security officers the needed respect to prevent unnecessary confrontations. His comment comes on the back of the invasion of Ashaiman by some soldiers after the killing of a young military officer. The soldiers brutalised several residents in the hope of finding the killers of their colleague. “I will appeal to the people of Ghana to be respectful of people in uniform, it will help all of us. I will not say anything else until we, the committee members, have gone on Thursday to the place and ascertained things for ourselves.” The Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament has also revealed that the committee together with the Ministry of Defence and the Military High Command will pay a visit to the Ashaiman community on Thursday, March 16. Speaking to journalists, the Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee, Kennedy Agyepong said the visit will inform the committee of its next line of action. Meanwhile, a pressure group – Ashaiman Lives Matter – has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately set up a committee to probe brutalities meted out to residents of Ashaiman by some soldiers. The group made up of former MP, Alfred Agbesi and current MP Ernest Norgbey in a statement condemned the invasion of Ashaiman by some soldiers who brutalised and arrested over 150 people. The invasion followed the death of a young soldier who was stabbed to death by some unknown assailants in the community. “We are currently in a constant state of fear for our dear lives because the soldiers told the residents that it is a Month’s Operation and they have instructions from above to put the fear of God in them to avenge the murder of the fallen soldier. “Ladies and Gentlemen of the press we the people of Ashaiman condemn the beastly acts of the Ghana Armed Forces, and we also call for President of the Republic of Ghana His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo Danquah, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces to do same and render an unqualified apology to the Good People of Ashaiman for the criminal acts of his troops.
