Ghanaian actress and activist, Yvonne Nelson, has expressed regret over a photo she took with President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo following his victory in the 2016 elections. Nelson who was the convener of the “Dumsor Must Stop” vigil in 2015 to protest the energy crisis and corruption revealed in her memoir that she had hoped that President Akufo-Addo would bring about positive change and tackle corruption. However, she now believes that his administration’s actions have been a monumental disappointment for Ghana. Yvonne Nelson recalled that in 2016, the change in power brought hope to Ghanaians, as President Akufo-Addo was perceived as “incorruptible” and a potential antidote to the pervasive issue of corruption. “He was said to be incorruptible, and Ghanaians thought he was going to be the antidote to mass stealing at the highest level, which is euphemized as corruption. Unfortunately for Ghana and those who trusted in him, he has turned out to be a monumental disappointment whose government’s unbridled borrowing, corruption, and reckless spending plunged the nation into economic dumsor,” she shared in the memoir. A flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Eric Sakyi Nketiah, has accused leadership of the party of unfairly denying him the opportunity to pick forms to contest this year’s presidential primaries. He has, therefore, voluntarily withdrawn from the race. “My withdrawal from the 2023 NPP Presidential Primaries is also a very difficult decision in view of the prospects, excitement, support and empowerment that greeted my intention to run,” he stated in a press release dated Tuesday, June 20, 2023. “The difficulty, notwithstanding, I have had to end my run in the 2023 NPP Presidential Primaries under very difficult and painful circumstances.” He complained: “I wish to put on record publicly, for the first time, that for three consecutive days and at a crucial stage in the process, I was unfairly denied the opportunity to pick the nomination forms.” He said not even two petitions to the General Secretary and the Chairman of the Council of Elders could yield a favourable outcome. He said the concerns raised by other aspirants about free and fair elections must taken very seriously in order not to “leave behind a sour taste in the mouths of party members and the Ghanaian people”. “We must not allow simple free and fair elections to become a scarce commodity in the NPP at a time the Ghanaian people are looking up to the ruling party to provide the leadership that would build a resilient and less dependent economy through sustained and viable agriculture, support for businesses, proper management of corruption, support for domestic affairs and a productive educational system.” So far, 11 persons have picked forms and some are already returning their forms ahead of vetting. The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Isaac Adongo, has dared Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for a debate on the economy, indicating that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful has contributed nothing in his six years in office. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP said the Vice President has moved from talking about the economy to singing the song of digitalization, whose building blocks were laid by the NDC government. “We built the biggest capacity data center to ensure that the Ghana.gov project which was to computerize government service had a place for data safety and for data storage,” he told journalists on Wednesday, June 21 at Parliament. “Without these infrastructure, you can only dream about digitalization, Dr. Bawumia,” he directed his statement to the Vice President, who is on a campaign tour in the Greater Accra Region. The Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament, subsequently, challenged the Vice President to an open debate on the economy. “Now economy has whipped you, you’ve moved to Yahoo and say you are doing digitalisation. He should tell us his track record in building infrastructure for digitalization.” The NDC lawmaker said the days when Dr. Bawumia’s track record was not known, and he was given the benefit of the doubt, are long gone. “He has a record and anytime he is ready wake me up from sleep. He can choose his own venue, he can choose his own moderator. Renowned investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas has disclosed that he will soon release a documentary that will shake the foundation of Ghana. The documentary, according to Anas, would be released before the 2024 elections and would be an investigative piece on some politicians in the country. The journalist, who made these remarks in an interview on DW Africa, added that he has not released any piece on Ghana for a couple of months now because of the work that is going into the upcoming exposé. “The work that I am doing now might be the last before we get into the elections. But already the signs are very clear and I can tell you that the foundation would be shaken once again. “There are a couple of international ones that are about to be released. But this one talking to you as a Ghanaian, I mean the foundation of Ghana would be shaken,” he said. He added that he’s being thorough with the upcoming documentary so that it can have an effect just like the last one which led to the removal of the former Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen. Anas Aremeyaw Anas has recently been drawing criticisms from a section of the public following the loss of the defamation lawsuit he filed against the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has expressed his dissatisfaction at the rate at which politicians and government officials steal money from government coffers and bring it to the church to offer it to God as an offering. He has therefore described such an attitude as a sin and therefore must be stopped. According to him, who ever involves him or herself in a sin, can not think well and make good decisions, adding that the sins we commit in the country hampers the growth of the nation. He has also charged Ghanaians to stop relying solely on politicians and individuals before doing something for themselves in life. The Presbyterian Moderator made this call when he joined the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Sefwi Presbytery to celebrate their ten (10) years anniversary at Sefwi Bekwai on Sunday, June 18. Delivering his sermon to the congregation under the Theme: "Christ In You, The Hope Of Glory", Prof Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante noted that no one can move forward in life if the person depends solely on an individual or depends on someone for survival. "Yes, it's true every one needs someone to hold his or her hand to move forward but that doesn't mean you should always depend on the person all the time," he told the Congregation. He urged Ghanaians especially Christians to do something with their hands, start something small and with faith, determination and hard work backed by prayers God will enlarge their coast. He said over reliance on the president, politicians for work will keep some lives of Ghanaians at stand still. He charged politicians to stop spoon feeding Ghanaians all in the name of votes but rather teach them how to fish, show them the way they can strive to make a living since giving Ghc50 and Ghc100 here and there to party supporters all in the name for votes breeds corruption, one of the sins which is killing the country.
