Board Chairman of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) Company Limited, Ekow Hackman has described the transformation undergone by BOST over the past three years as truly remarkable. He made these remarks while speaking at the 2nd Annual General Meeting organised by BOST in Accra. Speaking at the event, Board Chairman of BOST, Mr. Ekow Hackman said "The transformation that BOST has undergone over the past three years is truly remarkable. The company has been turned from a heavily indebted one to a highly profitable one. In 2022 BOST increased its net profit by 112 percent to GHS 342 million from GHS 161 million in 2021." "This performance should be viewed in the context of a miserable run of losses which had been recorded for more than a decade until 2021" He noted that the Board expects the declaration of profits by BOST should become an annual tradition to be celebrated by all and sundry. "Central to our transformation has been the restoration of our business model, which involves the effective utilization of our strategically located fuel depots connected by a network of pipelines and barges. The revival of these assets has enabled us to deliver fuel products securely and cost-effectively to consumers across the country" "Through the dedicated efforts of our management and workforce, we have increased significantly the revenue generating assets of the company to 97 percent from a trough of 34 percent in 2017." He stressed that BOST is committed to ensuring that 100 percent of its assets are generating revenue by the end of 2023. He explained that the increase in the BOST Margin from 7 pesewas to 9 pesewas in December 2022 provided it with the necessary resources to repair and maintain facilities, many of which are situated in areas where the private sector is absent. He noted that Business and Economic Environment 2022 was a challenging year for the international and domestic economy, with severe price shocks emanating from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine compounding the lingering effects of the dislocation of supply chains caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. "As a result, Ghana’s Real GDP growth slowed to 3.3 percent in 2022, down from 5.4 percent in 2021. A “flight to safety”, triggered by the above events, saw a strengthening of the US Dollar and a concomitant weakening of emerging market currencies" He disclosed that the Cedi depreciated by 54.2 percent against the US Dollar in 2022 compared to a depreciation of 4.1 percent in 2021, with inflation at the end of 2022 recorded at 54.1 percent as compared to 12.6 percent at the end of 2021. "The downstream oil sector in Ghana experienced a contraction, with consumption of petroleum products falling by 8.7 percent, according to the NPA" Touching in the Financial and Operational Performance, he said "I am pleased to announce that BOST achieved a net profit after tax of GHS 342,494,604 compared to GHS 160,718,361 in the previous year, an increase of 112 percent" He hinted that BOST’s operating income also increased by 69 percent from GHS 254,291,419 in 2021 to GHS 428,923,102 in 2022. "This was on the back of a 77 percent increase in revenue from GHS 1.121 billion in 2021, to GHS 3.019 billion in 2022. Revenue from fuel product sales saw an increase of 387 percent in 2022 compared to 2021. Revenue from gasoline sales increased by 224 percent, from GHS 340,633,871 to GHS 1,103,299,371, whilst gasoil sales increased by 352 percent, from GHS331,063,261 to GHS 1,495,912,905" He stressed that this positive trading performance could be attributed to improved financing arrangements, more effective customer engagement and retention initiatives as well as the prudent management of trading risks" Taking his turn, Director-General of SIGA, Ambassador Edward Boateng said "Indeed, GDP growth is estimated to have slowed to 3.2% in 2022, down from 5.4% in 2021. As you are aware, the banking sector vulnerabilities increased due to the cedi depreciation and the impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP) which was concluded in February 2023. He noted that despite all these challenges, BOST has demonstrated resilience and commitment to delivering its mandate and ensuring that the shareholder receives value from the investment. Reflecting on the past year, the Director-General stressed that it was gratifying to note the significant progress made by BOST. "During the 2021 Annual General Meeting, I was impressed by the remarkable turnaround of the company when BOST reported a profit of GHS160,718,361. After reviewing BOST’s 2022 audited accounts, and noticing the profit of GHS342,494,604 after tax, my confidence in the potential of State-Owned Enterprises was increased" He lauded the Board, Management and staff for transitioning BOST from negative equity position of GHS248,190,799 in 2021 to a positive position of GHS86,466,542. "While acknowledging the existing fiscal and infrastructural challenges, we believe that BOST is on the right path for further operational and financial growth. By fostering innovative thinking, perseverance, and teamwork among all stakeholders, we can achieve even more" On his part, Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh noted that BOST has transitioned from a negative equity position of (GHS 248,190,799) in 2021 to a positive equity position of GHS 86,466,542 in 2022. It is very noteworthy that after making a profit of GHS161 million in 2021, the company has significantly increased its profit to GHS 342 million in 2022, an impressive growth of 112%! "It is worth noting that the BOST Margin saw an upward revision from 7 to 9 pesewas per litre in 2022, facilitating the commissioning and initiation of major works. These include the Commissioning and operationalization of the Tema-Akosombo-Petroleum Pipeline, Completion of the Kumasi Rehabilitation Project, Repair and commissioning of tanks at Accra Plains Depot (APD), Construction of Bulk Road Vehicles (BRVs) park at Accra Plains Depot, Completion of Tema-Kumasi Pipeline Front End Engineering Design (FEED). He further noted that these transformations have led to improved operational efficiency and has set the company on a trajectory for growth. "I am aware that in pursuit of maintaining this positive trajectory, the management of the company has sought a debt-equity swap, which is currently awaiting approval from the Ministry of Finance. He revealed that government was fully aware of these tactics aimed at derailing the company, and wish to assure that it is are fully behind the noble efforts to consolidate the gains that have been made. Touching on fuel security, the Energy Minister said "Government is committed to equipping BOST with the necessary resources to fulfil its mandate fully. We are actively considering different modalities for achieving this goal" Dr. Opoku Prempeh revealed that BOST has been at the centre of the Gold for Oil policy, which seeks to provide fuel to Ghanaians at competitive prices by reducing dependence on forex for import of petroleum products. We believe that there are significant gains that can be achieved through the collaboration between BOST and TOR. An effectively functioning TOR will complement BOST’s efforts by refining products and delivering them for storage and distribution, thereby alleviating the burden of high prices for Ghanaian petroleum consumers. A Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Regina Abanga has been arraigned at the Circuit Court in Accra and slapped with 116 counts of stealing totaling GHc287,775.47. Abanga, 44, is said to have manipulated Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and succeeded in stealing the said sim belonging to the Unit Head of the bank. She has pleaded not guilty to all the 116 counts of stealing and has been granted bail in the sum of GHc250k. In addition to the bail sum, the court presided over by Her Honour Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie, said she should produce three sureties, one of whom should be justified with a landed property worth GHC125k. She is also to report to the police every Wednesday until further notice while the case has been adjourned to September 5. Brief facts Per the brief facts of the case presented to the court by DSP Evans Kesse, were that, the Complainant, Irene Aka Antwi is a staff of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) Head Office. The Complainant is also said to be the Unit Head Officer, E-Business Operation at the bank whilst the accused, Regina Abanga is a Secretary with the Ministry of Energy, Ministries-Accra. DSP Kesse told the court that, the Accused holds an account with the (ADB), Ridge Branch. The Prosecutor said, between November, 2022 and June 2023, the accused person manipulated some ADB ATM machines across the Accra metropolis and succeeded in withdrawing a total amount of GH287,775.47 belonging to the Bank. He said, on June 15, 2023, one Solomon Inkoom of ADB Labone Branch detected about the unusual ATM withdrawals by accused. DSP Kesse said, the witness informed the complainant who then reported to the ADB’s risk team. Accused A.T.M card was subsequently blocked to prevent her from further withdrawals. The Prosecutor said, on June 16, 2023 at about 5.00pm, accused went to ADB Ridge Branch, Accra to withdraw money from the ATM machine but the card was captured. The Prosecutor said, the accused then went to the banking hall to report the incident to Management only to be arrested by the Bank’s Risk team and handed over to the Ministries Police. He said, during investigations, Accused admitted the offence and indicated further that she used some of the stolen money to acquire a Toyota Vito with registration number GE-3545 -21 and also to finance a three storey building which has reached a 5-cause level. Leaders of the Anglican Church of Tanzania have encouraged President Samia Suluhu Hassan to continue working diligently, regardless of the many criticisms directed at her. The Primate of the Anglican Church of Tanzania, Rev. Maimbo Mndolwa, expressed these sentiments yesterday during the inauguration of the church’s Economic Centre building in Dodoma. “Just as I believe the President is being met with ‘hammers’ of criticism, truly, at the end of the day, we are the ones that use the roads, board aeroplanes, and use the ships as well,” he said. He also directed words of encouragement to fellow clergymen and the Bishop of the Central Tanganyika Diocese in Dodoma, Reverend Dr Dickson Chilongani, for his management and completion of the Sh8 billion building. “Where work is steadfast, doubts are necessary, but victory will arise when we stand with God,” he said. The launched building comprises commercial spaces, a conference hall with a capacity of accommodating 300 people at once, and a parking area for 34 cars on the lower level and 15 cars on the upper level. It is also equipped with modern fire suppression systems, facilities for people with special needs, elevators, and soundproofing equipment in the conference hall to avoid disruption for other users of the building. On her part, President Hassan remarked that the government recognises the contribution of religious institutions in fostering spiritual growth, building a nation of righteous and God-fearing people, and aiding in citizen services. “Religious institutions are an important partner for the government,” she said. The President said the recently launched building owned by the Anglican Church of Tanzania will help grow the church’s economic activities as well as contribute to economic and social progress in the Dodoma region as a whole. The President encouraged the church to promote moral values and condemn wrongdoing. She urged the education of both the youth and the adults who misuse the church for unethical purposes, urging the faithful to address this issue. The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has taken a swipe at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over his suggestion to rename the University of Ghana after one of the ‘Big Six’, J. B. Danquah. Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV on Monday, August 16, 2023, the MP said that it is unfortunate that the president is content with unnecessarily renaming facilities built by other presidents. He added that President Akufo-Addo would go down in history as the only president who added nothing to Ghana’s university infrastructure, which he should be worried about. “… we have had enough of President Akufo-Addo just renaming. He should try and build something. Look, in this 4th Republic, he's going down in history as the only president who cannot lay claim to the public university that he has built. Isn't he worried about that? “President Rawlings won a hunger prize, and dedicated all of it to the establishment of UDS. President Kufour elevated the Tarkwa campus to a full-fleshed university... Professor Mills said that look, it is not right that we have some regions in this country without public universities. Let's give every region that doesn't have a public university, one. And the University of Energy and Natural Resources was born; the University of Health and Allied Sciences was born. “President Mahama, University of Environmental and Sustainable Development, I was with him when he secured the funding and cut the sword for what is now called the Somanya University. So, President Akufo-Addo where is yours? You are not ashamed that all you do is go about renaming other people's universities,” the MP said. President Akufo-Addo further remarked that the legacy of Joseph Boakye Danquah might even warrant consideration for naming the University of Ghana after him, given the historical significance of his contributions. Some scores of students at the University of Ghana have advised President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to focus on his job instead of renaming the institution after J.B. Danquah. According to the students, there is the need for more infrastructural facilities at the University of Ghana that will expand their scope and help deal with any accommodation issues. These institutions they say, can be named after J.B. Danquah to help solve the accommodation crisis the institution is grappling with. In an interview with GhanaWeb TV on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, some of the students said; “As a citizen, I would say this [renaming of UG] is the least of our worries. There are a lot of pertinent issues moving around our neck as a country like the economy that needs much more attention from his [Akufo-Addo] outfit. I think the best thing for him is to put up a structure, maybe a university in their homeland in the Eastern region and name it after J.B. Danquah. My message to the president is that the name; University of Ghana will remain today, tomorrow, and forever,” one student; Rashad told GhanaWeb TV. “Personally I don’t think that it [renaming UG] is an ideal thing that we should be doing at this particular moment. The reason why I am saying this is that the name and the respect of this particular institution is in the name itself. The University of Ghana has been the University we’ve all known across the world because of the ‘Ghana’ that is attached to it. "So I think the moment we remove 'Ghana' from there and add an individual’s name to it irrespective of the contribution that the person has done to the university or even the country as a whole, I think is going to reduce that kind of respect and the mileage that the University has,” another student, Collins, told Ghanaweb TV. A female student raised concern about the monetary cost involved with regard to branding its equipment if President Akufo-Addo goes ahead to rename the University of Ghana after J.B. Danquah. “Renaming a whole premier University after J.B. Danquah is going to cause a lot of impacts. As we all know, the university is thriving with its name, [University of Ghana] so changing it is going to cause a lot of loss to the university, especially with the branding of buses, logo, and everything which is going to bring a lot of cost to the University. So I don’t really buy the idea that the University’s name should be changed,” Elizabeth Ocansey said. “What we need is not renaming but facilities that will help the University. Even a lot of the lecturers are complaining that their conditions of service are not good. The Energy Commission has organized the Northern and Southern Zonal Competitions of Senior High Schools Renewable Energy Challenge (SHS RE Challenge) in Kumasi. The fourth edition of the SHS RE Challenge, on the theme, "Mechanized Small-Scale Agriculture Using Renewable Energy Technologies’ saw 125 schools from 16 regions competing for the finals to be held in the Greater Accra Region on 17th October 2023. Addressing the gathering at the Southern Zonal Competition of the Challenge on Monday, August 14, 2023, the Chief Executive of Officer of Bui Power Authority (BPA), Hon. Samuel Kofi Ahiave Dzamesi represented by Mr. Wisdom Ahiataku-Togobo, Director, Renewable, BPA said, " BPA is a leading institution in renewable energy in the West African sub-region ". According to Hon. Dzamesi, BPA in addition to its Hydro-Solar- Hybridization operations, is collaborating with a private company using simple renewable energy technologies to establish a seven thousand (7,000) hectares sugar plantation within the Bui enclave, which when completed will be the largest in the west African sub-region. Recognizing that Cashew is a major cash crop in Bono, Savannah and the Northern parts of Ghana, Bui Power Authority is partnering with another private company to construct a cashew processing plant. He stressed that renewable energy technologies will be deployed to process and add value to the cashew for export. The Authority is also collaborating with the Berlin Technical University, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, and the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani to provide the practical knowhow as was done in Germany to build the needed capacity through Professional Education for Renewable Energies in Ghana (ProREG) program. BPA says it will take a leading role by availing its RE facilities for lecturers and students pursuing programs in renewable energy for academic research and development purposes. The Southern Zonal Competition saw Sogakofe Secondary School, emerging as winner with 87.7%, followed by Yaa Asantewaa Girls' SHS with 81% and Mfantsiman Girls' SHS with 77.8%.
