The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has disclosed that road crashes for the first two months of January and February 2024 saw a slight increase. The Director-General of the NRSA, Ing. David Osafo Adonteng, at the launch of the 2024 Road Safety Easter Campaign, disclosed that 2,260 road crashes were reported involving 3,910 vehicles, with 369 fatalities, 2,552 injuries and 381 pedestrian knockdowns in the first two months of 2024. For the same period last year, 2,249 cases were recorded involving 3,857 vehicles. 330 persons were killed, while 2,502 persons were injured and 382 pedestrian knockdowns were also recorded. “This is an increase of 0.49% for crashes, 1.37% for vehicles involved and 2.0% for persons injured. Notably, persons killed/fatalities increased by 11.82%, all compared to the first two months in 2023,” Ing. David Osafo Adonteng added. News coming in indicates that Former Spokesperson for the New Force Movement, Shalimar Abbiusi has hinted that she will be suing Ghana at the international ECOWAS court for human rights violations and injustice. The Former Spokesperson took to X, formerly Twitter to make the announcement. She tweeted “I can finally share the news that I will be taking the state of Ghana to international ECOWAS court for the violation of my human rights and the injustice I have suffered. Thanks to @fx_sosu [Francis-Xavier Sosu] and @thenewforcegh for fighting this battle with me.” “Whatever happened will not break me or silence me, it inspired me to help others and bring attention to these injustices" She stressed that the attempt to sue Ghana is not out of pain or revenge. "This bold step I’m taking is not out of pain or revenge but rather out of love for humanity and for the love of people who became victims in similar circumstances.” It will be recalled that the The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) arrested and later deported Ms. Shalimar on a charge of illegal entry in December 2023. The European Union (EU) has donated some motorbikes, bed camps, radio communication devices, microscope cameras to Ghana Immigration Service (GIS). According to the EU, with this contribution, and forseen trainings and practical exercises, it aims to reinforce GIS in its efforts to secure Ghana’s borders. Speaking at the brief presentation, EU Ambassador, H.E. Irchad Razaaly said “Motorbikes and bed camps will improve GIS mobility, allowing more effective patrols in remote border areas, and rapid response to incidents. Radio Communication Devices will facilitate coordination, enabling faster response times, and enhancing operational efficiency. Microscope cameras will allow for detailed inspections and forensic analysis” He added that the delivery of the equipment falls under a (EUR 5M) on Strengthening Border Security, funded by the European Union, and implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). “In an interconnected world, strengthening border management is essential to our collective security. The security situation in the Sahel region poses concrete risks to Ghana, Gulf of Guinea, and even to Europe” “Let me clear. Today’s delivery is only a small step in a much larger story. It is the latest illustration of a deepening partnership between the European Union and Ghana in the field of security and defence, at a time when West Africa is facing rising challenges. In a surprising twist during proceedings at the Sefwi Wiawso Court, ten individuals who were called to stand before Judge Magistrate Eric Baah Boateng turned to six. The court learned from prosecutor George Asante Doi that the four Chinese nationals had tragically perished while in police custody. The ten individuals, consisting of six Ghanaians and four Chinese nationals, had been apprehended by the Forestry Commission several months earlier for engaging in illegal mining activities. They had since been remanded in police custody, awaiting further legal action. However, the absence of the Chinese defendants prompted inquiries from the judge. In response to the judge’s queries, the prosecutor revealed the grim news of the four Chinese nationals’ deaths. Judge Magistrate Eric Baah Boateng has demanded tangible evidence confirming the demise of the Chinese nationals at the next court session. The cause and circumstances surrounding their deaths remain undisclosed, prompting a deeper investigation. The sudden loss of the four Chinese nationals has raised concerns about the conditions of their detention and the accountability of the authorities involved. Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim has said that Ghana’s economy grew by 2.9% in 2023, from the 3.8% recorded in 2022. The Services sector contracted by -1.2%, he added. Commenting on this development, an economist Dr Theo Acheampong asked on his X platform whether this is a further sign of relative macro-stabilisation. “Further signs of relative macro-stabilisation? — Ghana’s economy expanded at its fastest pace in more than a year after the industry sector exited four straight quarters of contraction. “Gross domestic product grew 3.8% in the three months through December from a year earlier, compared with a revised 2.2% in the prior quarter. Mam Yandey Joof, who is standing trial over the death of  Benett Agyekum Adomah alias Kikibee, has been discharged by the Madina District Court. Joof, a hotelier and girlfriend of the deceased and owner of Kikibee Restaurant, was discharged by the court following the advice of the Office of the Attorney General. Prosecution told the court that “the advice from the Attorney General is ready and we have been asked to discharge the accused person.” Joof in a state of disbelief said “aww” and wiped her tears. The court presided over by Susana Nyarkotey said in accordance with the advice from the Attorney General dated February 8, 2024, the accused is hereby discharged. “They found no fault with you,” the Magistrate said. Mam Yandey Joof, who is on GH¢200,000 bail, wept uncontrollably as her relatives whisked her away into a waiting vehicle. Joof was facing a charge of murder following the death of her boyfriend, Kikibee, the owner of Kikibee restaurant. Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has disclosed that the next NDC government will set up a US$50 million financial technology (fintech) transformative fund to support innovative start-ups in Ghana’s fintech sector. The former president voiced confidence in the fintech sector’s ability to create economic growth and financial inclusion in Ghana, promising to invest extensively in the industry if he is elected in the December 7 elections. “We did it for the pharmaceutical industry. We gave them US$10 million to scale up and put up new production lines, and that enabled them to start exporting their drugs to our neighbouring countries for the first time. “So, when I say we will do it for the fintech industry, I mean it,” the former president said during a roundtable discussion with leaders in the country’s fintech ecosystem in Accra. “The next NDC government will promote and nurture innovation hubs through public and private partnerships to harness technology to address Ghana’s development challenges and working with partners, we shall establish a US$50 million fintech transformative growth fund to address the teething financial needs of Ghanaian-owned fintech,” the former president stated. According to Mahama, fintech innovators will be mentored to be technology entrepreneurs, allowing them to develop businesses based on their discoveries, attract investments, and generate jobs. John Mahama further added that a “separate body” would be formed to oversee the money, assuring respect to criteria of transparency, justice, and equitable chances based on merit. Mahama also promised that the future NDC administration would speed up efforts to close the country’s alarming gender gap in financial inclusion. He expressed concerns about the ongoing growth of the gender gap, despite progress in increasing financial inclusion. “This trend is unacceptable and needs urgent attention if we are to put Ghana on the path of sustained and inclusive development considering that women form almost 51 percent of the population and own about 44 percent of micro and small and medium enterprises in Ghana,” he said. The NDC 2024 presidential candidate made the assurances while interacting with the Ghana Fintech and Payment Association. Martin Kwame Awagah, President of the Association, said the sector presents a great chance for the government to move beyond traditional banking infrastructure and deliver accessible financial services to all citizens. Popular Ghanaian highlife musician Mr. George Darko has passed on. The burger highlife pioneer died on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, according to Hitz FM presenter Andy Dosty. Andy Dosty, who made the announcement on his ‘DayBreakHitz’ show said, “News reaching us indicates that Nana Ampem Darko, popularly known as George Darko, has passed on.” According to close sources, the late George Darko before his death, was a regular patient at the Palliative Ward of the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital. Until his death, he had been on admission for the past 3 months and was pronounced dead in the early hours of Wednesday, March 20, 2024. His family has since moved the remains of the late music legend to the Orthopedic Hospital, Mampong-Akuapem for preservation. The late George Darko was popular in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and his songs are some of the most timeless and enduring highlife tracks in Ghanaian music circles. Notable among his songs are; ‘Akoo Te brofo’, ‘Prempremsiwaa’, ‘Moni Palava’, and many others. He doubled as a guitarist, vocalist, composer, and songwriter. He sold the 'Burger Highlife' genre across the world, particularly in Germany. In 2012, he staged a concert to celebrate 30 years of the genre. The emergence of ‘Burger Highlife’ Burger Highlife years ago was a whole subculture with its fashion and way of life. The genre through the years found a perfect home in ‘Highlife’ being the universal genre. Through the likes of George Darko, Lee Duodu, and Charles Amoah, the genre has grown over the years, with a huge following. Veteran Nollywood actor, Amaechi Muonagor has called on Nigerians to assist him financially to carry out a kidney transplant in India. In a video circulating on social media, the popular actor was seen laying on a bed, pleading for help. His Nollywood colleague Kingsley Orji, who was seated next to him, made an appeal on his behalf. Orji revealed that Amaechi Muonagor left the teaching hospital some days ago due to financial constraints. He stated that the illness had affected his speech and urged fans and well-wishers to contribute for a transplant surgery. “It has not been easy. He has been in this condition for months now. He wants to go for a kidney transplant. What we want is for you to help us for him to travel to India,” Orji said. “He just came back from the ICU in Nnewi teaching hospital a couple of days ago. He was responding to treatment but not very well. “We decided to bring him home because there was no money but it is not advisable. He barely talks well. Please, he needs your help.” Recall in November 2023, Amaechi Muonagor had cried out for help after revealing that he was battling paralysis which has affected half of his first leg. His words: “I’m sick, this thing that is called stroke caught up with me, and from there they rushed me to the hospital. The first hospital they rushed me to was in Nnewi, where I spent some two months and I was referred to Teaching Hospital Nnewi and here I am. “I was on a movie set with Emeka Ani, Patience Ozokwo, Rita Edochie, and Ebele Okaro. I was about to enter my car when I was struck with this problem and since then it has been getting worse. Right now, I can’t move, I can’t walk on my own. Half of my left leg is paralyzed, my left hand is not movable, so it is a problem for me. “I’m calling on well spirited individuals to come to my assistance, to see how they can help me. In three days, Ridge Hospital may face disconnection from the national grid if it fails to settle a GH¢42m power consumption debt accumulated over a year, as warned by the National Taskforce of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). This caution was outlined in a demand notice served to the hospital during a visit by ECG officials, who are conducting a nationwide revenue mobilization exercise to recover unpaid bills from customers, including State-owned Enterprises (SOEs). It said "You are required to make full payment of the above amount from the date of this notice, preferably between the hours of 8.00 a. m and 4:00 pm at any ECG office. ECG disconnection exercise "Failure on your part to honour this request after three-working days of delivery will result in disconnection of electricity supply to your premises without further notice and legal action would be initiated against you." Nevertheless, the hospital's administration convened a meeting with the power distributor to explain that the responsibility for settling bills of this nature rested with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health, rather than the hospital itself. Earlier, the ECG said it will disconnect electricity supply to 91 hospitals nationwide due to unpaid debts totaling GH¢261 million. Prominent hospitals, such as Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the 37 Military Hospital, Ridge Hospital in the Greater Accra region, Komfo Anokye and Manhyia Government Hospitals in the Ashanti region, Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta region, and Kibi Government Hospital in the Eastern region, are among those facing the risk of disconnection. The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that no fatalities were recorded following the emergency landing of its Air Force Helicopter with registration number GHF 696 at Bonsukrom near Agona Nkwanta in the Western Region. According to the Ghana Armed Forces, all passengers on board have been accounted for. In a statement signed by its Director General, Public Relations, Brigadier General, E. Aggrey-Quarshie, he said "All passengers on board have been accounted for and there were no fatalities. However, they have been evacuated and are currently undergoing routing medical checkup. The statement further noted that the Ghana Air Force Helicopter with registration number GHF 696 at about 12:30 hours on Tuesday made an emergency landing within the general areas of Bonsukrom near Agona Nkwanta in the Western Region. Brigadier General, E. Aggrey-Quarshie explained that the helicopter had on board Twenty-one (21) passengers made up of staff of the Ghana National Gas Company and aircrew were conducting routine offshore powerline inspection of the Atuabo Gas Plant when the incident occurred.
