‘Welfare of our officers, soldiers and defence civilian staff remains a top priority’ — Dr. Ato Forson

The Government of Ghana has taken another step towards improving living conditions for personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) with the commissioning of the newly completed Butler Barracks at Burma Camp.

The new residential complex, designed to accommodate more than 2,000 military personnel, is expected to ease the persistent accommodation challenges confronting the Armed Forces.

The facility is already housing officers and soldiers relocated from El-Wak Barracks as part of a comprehensive redevelopment initiative to replace outdated military housing with modern residential facilities.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Acting Minister for Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, said providing decent accommodation for military personnel remains a key priority of government because it directly impacts their effectiveness and well-being.

“The welfare of our officers, soldiers and defence civilian staff remains a top priority. Modern accommodation goes beyond providing shelter; it promotes dignity, boosts morale, enhances operational readiness and prepares our Armed Forces to meet the demands of today’s security environment,” Dr. Ato Forson stated.

He said government would continue to channel resources into upgrading military infrastructure, stressing that improved housing, healthcare services, logistics and professional training are essential to building a resilient and efficient Armed Forces.

The commissioning of Butler Barracks forms part of a wider military modernisation programme aimed at addressing the long-standing shortage of official accommodation that has forced many service personnel and their families to seek housing outside military installations over the years.

The relocation of personnel from El-Wak Barracks was carried out under a carefully coordinated operation involving the movement of troops, military vehicles, equipment and other logistics to ensure a smooth transition.

Beyond Butler Barracks, government is also undertaking major redevelopment works at the Central Ordnance Depot, where new accommodation blocks, administrative offices, warehouses, schools and recreational facilities are under construction to improve operational efficiency and personnel welfare.

Other housing projects are progressing at Burma Camp, El-Wak Barracks and the GAF Post Office enclave, where additional residential units are being developed to further reduce the accommodation deficit within the Armed Forces.

Military authorities believe the replacement of ageing barracks with modern residential facilities will not only improve the quality of life of service personnel and their families but also strengthen the operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The commissioning of Butler Barracks therefore reflects government’s broader commitment to equipping the military with modern infrastructure while placing the welfare of its personnel at the centre of national security development.
