James Agbey, a staunch operative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a stern warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its key figures, cautioning them against any attempts to disrupt the upcoming 2024 general elections.
His comments were directed particularly at Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, following remarks made by Acheampong at a political rally in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituency.
At the rally, Acheampong asserted that the NPP would "do whatever it takes to win the elections" and claimed that the party’s spiritual backing from pastors, imams, and traditionalists made it an unstoppable force in Ghanaian politics.
He further stated, "Burn the sea if you don’t understand, we’ll win and continue with our good works," suggesting that the NPP is determined to retain power by any means necessary.
In response, Agbey condemned Acheampong’s comments as part of a broader pattern of threats from NPP leaders aimed at intimidating voters and undermining the democratic process.
"This latest threat from Bryan Acheampong is coming on the back of similar statements from Wontumi and other leading members of the NPP," Agbey said, referencing Bernard Antwi Bosiako, commonly known as Wontumi, who has also made provocative remarks about the NPP’s intentions for the 2024 elections.
Mr. Agbey accused the NPP of planning to use violence and electoral malpractice to cling to power, citing past incidents like the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence as evidence of the party’s willingness to destabilize the country to achieve its goals.
"The NPP is not preparing for elections; rather, the party is actively planning to scheme itself into power in 2024 using violent uprising as a replacement for peaceful polls," Agbey asserted.
He further emphasized the readiness of the NDC to confront any such attempts, invoking the party’s roots in the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) and the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), which were led by the late Jerry John Rawlings.
"We have more braver men in the party of Rawlings than the NPP can actually boast of,"
Mr. Agbey declared, making it clear that the NDC will not tolerate any actions that threaten Ghana’s democracy.
Mr. Agbey’s statement also served as a rallying call to NDC supporters and Ghanaians at large, assuring them that the party is fully committed to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
"We won’t allow the NPP to threaten the entire country in an attempt to wreck our democracy and throw the nation into chaos," he vowed.
The NDC operative concluded his statement by reaffirming the party’s resolve to ensure a peaceful, fair, and transparent election.
"We will remain focused on jealously protecting our democracy on December 7th," Agbey said, adding that while the NDC prefers to win through the ballot box, it is prepared to meet any challenge posed by the NPP’s tactics.
As the 2024 elections approach, tensions between Ghana’s two major political parties continue to escalate, with both sides making bold declarations about their intentions and strategies.
Mr. Agbey’s warning is a clear indication that the NDC is prepared for a fierce contest and will not back down in the face of perceived threats from the NPP.
