The Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) has announced its decision to embark on a nationwide strike, effective Friday, September 27, 2024.
This action comes in response to the government’s persistent failure to honour obligations under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and its refusal to implement revised allowances for senior members of public universities.
In a strongly worded statement, TUSAAG expressed its deep frustration with the government's disregard for agreements reached in July 2024.
These agreements, following a directive from the Ministry of Finance in May 2024, promised the revision of allowances for senior university members.
However, the continued inaction has left TUSAAG with no choice but to withdraw services across all technical universities in Ghana.
“This declaration follows our earlier communication to the government (Ref. No TTD/8/9/241), outlining our intent to initiate industrial action due to the government’s refusal to fulfil its commitments,” the statement read.
TUSAAG highlighted that the government's actions have not only violated the rights of its members but also revealed systemic discrimination.
"The government has unfairly favoured other unions in public universities by paying common allowances while excluding TUSAAG," the Association stated.
The Association stressed that it can no longer tolerate working under conditions that undermine fairness and equity.
"Effective tomorrow, we will withdraw all services until our demands are met," TUSAAG declared, signaling a major disruption in the operations of technical universities across the nation.
As the strike looms, many fear its potential impact on the education sector, with students, faculty, and administrators likely to feel the immediate effects of the walkout.
This nationwide strike is expected to intensify calls for the government to address the long-standing issues surrounding university administration and staff welfare.
