The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has announced a 15% increase in transport fares, effective Monday, July 22.
This decision, driven by the rising cost of fuel, was communicated by David Agboado, the association's Public Relations Officer, in an interview with Citi FM on Wednesday, July 17.
Mr. Agboado expressed deep concerns about the financial strain the escalating fuel prices are placing on drivers.
"We cannot continue to absorb the escalating fuel prices, which are significantly impacting our earnings," he stated.
The fare increase, he emphasized, is a necessary measure to ensure the sustainability of operations amidst these rising costs.
“We will be increasing transport fares on Monday. The reason is that fuel prices have gone high. All that we use in our vehicles has gone high,” Mr. Agboado explained.
He further clarified that the decision was made independently of the Transport Ministry, stating, “We don’t need to sit with the Transport Ministry before we increase our transport fares.”
The fare hike reflects the ongoing economic pressures faced by the transport sector, as fuel prices continue to climb, affecting the cost of vehicle maintenance and operations.
This move is aimed at mitigating the adverse effects on drivers' earnings and ensuring the continued viability of their services.
Passengers are advised to prepare for the increased transport costs starting next Monday.
